title

MaranoFan, i had two questions regarding this article and the associated blurb.

  • i am a bit surprised that the blurb mentions that the song "all about that bass" had "reached number one in 58 countries". to be clear, i think the statement is strongly sourced. (i even found a reuters article that mentions it.) however, i am wondering if the sources are either somehow mistaken or have used questionable methodology to arrive at that count.
if the song really did top the charts in 58 countries, i would have assumed that there would have been earlier reports of the song being number one in fewer countries as the song's popularity spread across the globe, so i tried searching for these reports, and could not find any that mentioned the song being number one in more than 40 countries but fewer than 58 countries.[a] most of the sources i did find mentioned a number of countries lower than 30. this seems a lot more believable, since the charts section of the article on the song only lists 19 countries in which the song topped the weekly charts.[b]
after i looked through a number of sources, i began to wonder if it was possible that someone, at some point, made up a number that sounded good without understanding what was within the realm of plausibility, and this number simply got parroted around. for comparison, according to this source, the international federation of the phonographic industry considers pharrell williams's "happy" to be the top digital single worldwide that year, and that article only claims that "happy" hit number one in twentysomething countries. alternatively, i believe it is also possible that the number 58 was derived using questionable methodology. i think i have seen a fan site (for another musician, not trainor) cite charts of local radio stations as evidence that a song had topped the charts in that country.[c]
personally, i think the number is distracting in the blurb, and also makes me question everything else in the blurb, especially since that number is used to highlight the popularity of a specific song on the ep, while the ep itself was effectively withdrawn within about a month, and never got the chance to see similar successes. would it be more prudent to simply avoid mentioning it in the blurb by, for example, replacing "reached number one in 58 countries with" with "had"? alternatively, using a more believable number could be less distracting. the highest number of countries i have found mentioned in a relevant reliable source (aside from 58) is 28, by the guardian, here.
  • i had previously raised an issue with you regarding the accuracy of one of the captions in the article, and had figured that, since you repeated my suggested plan of action and then archived the discussion, you had read it and were planning to change the caption to address the issue. however, i see that the caption has remained unchanged. is this an oversight, or is there some other reason why the caption has not been changed?

dying (talk) 21:42, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

  • Hi dying, I appreciate your diligence about TFAs. Long story short, I'm not comfortable throwing out a strongly-sourced statement that has passed several FACs based on community consensus (included here, here, here, as well as here). Wikipedia has a ton of rules which make us exclude the charts of several countries from chart tables provided on song articles, the sources cited could be taking into consideration genre-specific, radio or single-platform charts which are omitted in WP's chart tables for concision (this would still leave the claim in the blurb true, since we aren't claiming there were "58 national record charts", just "58 charts"). If you want to start a discussion about the reliability of the sources I've used, RSN would be the appropriate venue. Likewise with the picture, I appreciate your analysis but it is original research and I had repeated it somewhat sarcastically. The better option seems to be to assume good faith that the user who added it to the article knew what song was being performed.--NØ 23:04, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Notes

  1. ^ i stopped looking after finding no relevant sources with the phrase "40 countries". my search was not exhaustive so i could have missed one, but i would have assumed that at least one relevant source should have been easy to find.
  2. ^ canada and the u.s. have multiple entries in that section, and europe is not a country.
  3. ^ this site was then cited by the wikipedia article for that song, which made me question everything else in the wikipedia article.

FLC

Hi MaranoFan ... just dropping to ask if you have some spare time for a review of a current FLC, which may have stalled a bit. I see you're on wiki-break at the moment, whenever you have a chance is fine, but if you're busy IRL, don't worry about it. Hope all is well. Pseud 14 (talk) 20:54, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Hey Pseud 14, hope everything is going well! I'm facing an extremely taxing time both on and off wiki so I can't promise anything but I wish you the best with the nomination.--NØ 02:37, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Trying to help

My only goal in reviewing DYK submissions is to help. I promoted one of your hooks with an image last week because you complained that a promotor did not use your image. In the last one that you withdrew I spent 45 minutes helping you come up with hooks. I do not exist to provide obstacles in the DYK process. I know it can be frustrating waiting for an approval, but everyone's goal there is to help you get your work featured. I hope that we can work together in the future. Have a great weekend. Bruxton (talk) 23:46, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

That's alright, man, you clearly know your stuff! Even other promotors tossed my last three hooks to the last spot of their prep sets so clearly I'm doing something wrong. I think I'm creating more trouble than help with my participation at DYK so I'll leave it to other music editors who seem to be doing something better apparently. Regards.--NØ 02:37, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
Trust me, there is a learning curve. It took me a year to get it down. By the way, I think the last slot is a good spot. Bruxton (talk) 02:48, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Lil Uzi Vert DYK possibility

Hi! Yesterday, I successfully nominated the Lil Uzi Vert article for GA status. Because of its new eligibility for a DYK, I was wondering if you'd be inclined to submit one for it. Of course there's no obligation; I would write try to do one myself, but you seem to be pretty good at making them, and I personally think they're an artist with very unique attributes and traits to highlight.

I obviously understand if you decide against doing so—just want to put it out there. OfTheUsername (talk) 04:59, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

my story today

Thank you today for Title (EP), "about Meghan Trainor's debut extended play Title, which was promoted for a very short duration in 2014. It had a modest commercial performance and was the first appearance of Trainor's best-selling single "All About That Bass" on a full-length project. It received mixed reviews from critics who noted its repetitive lyrical themes despite its short duration. You may have heard its title track when it went viral on TikTok last year."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:13, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Please assume good faith, and a request

Hello MaranoFan, I'm going start by politely asking that you assume good faith with me going forward. We're all just trying to create a good encyclopedia, and it's okay for us to disagree on things. Let's do so collegiality and without accusations.

Now, in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Holidays (Meghan Trainor featuring Earth, Wind & Fire song), you referred to my contribution with the language "The pile-on keep votes." In that accusatory context you also scare-quoted the actions I took on the article prior to the AFD. Actions I had already disclosed in my comment in the AFD. I am requesting that you strike these from the discussion (you can use <s> and </s> to do so).

Additionally, you broke up the text of one of my comments, this is highly unorthodox in AFD discussions (or any !vote-style discussion for that matter), and I would appreciate if you would edit to undo breaking up my comment. It is commonplace to reply below a comment, either by indenting with the normal editor, or by using the "reply" functionality.

I recognize that you are not trying to attack me. However, by opening up a sockpuppet investigation into me earlier today, followed by your depiction of my contribution and breaking up of my comment, I hope you understand that I feel under attack, even if that was not your intent.

I notice you are a member of "WikiProject Editor Retention". If you'll note my contribution history, I was a very active Wikipedian for several years beginning in 2004. However, I took some long breaks from editing. I'm back, and while I've enjoyed my time back, interactions like these do make it less enjoyable. I would like to stay, and as part of that, I hope you and I can turn this around and build a respectful relationship going forward.

I have nothing but goodwill towards this project and editors like yourself who make it happen.

Thank you very much for reading. —siroχo 05:51, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi Siroxo, thanks for reaching out to me. Likewise, I appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia as well. I have added signatures to my replies to make it clear those comments are from me. I did not "br[eak] up the text of one of [your] comments" with malicious intent, do not misrepresent my intentions. It is actually common to reply to individual bullet points in another user's comments. Also, I will not be striking any of my comments as those are solely my opinion. It is up to the closer's discretion how much weight they want to accord to it. Regards.--NØ 06:07, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for signing your inline replies, that means a lot. I apologize if it sounded like I ascribed any malicious intent to your actions. I did not mean to. I really do understand that you didn't mean to attack me. I was merely trying to describe that I felt attacked by this series of actions, even though that was not your intent. I can understand you not wanting to strike your comments, and won't expect it. I hope you understand why I asked, specifically I hope you can understand how having my contribution described in such a way felt like they were minimized and unappreciated. So, I appreciate you responding in a welcoming and kind way to my message. That really does go a long way for me.
As I was writing my previous message, I took a look at your user page, and saw that you've done a lot of work in the Meghan Trainor-related articles. (Awesome work, by the way). Next time someone who may be like me comes along and steps in your area of expertise making good faith edits, honestly, just reach out and tell them what you're trying to accomplish. I'm not 100% sure of your goal here, but if you had explained your desire for a merge or redirect or whatnot to me in a talk or user talk page, I would have listened to you. Personally, at that point, I would have checked your user page, seen that you're the resident expert, and been glad of your interest in stewarding the article into a better state whether that be merge/redirect or otherwise.
See, from my perspective, what I was trying to do was to help improve a page that another editor had just started. When I saw the WP:BLAR, I thought to myself "oh, I ran into a bunch of other sources when patrolling this page, let me add those in, and we'll build from there". I hope this is a helpful perspective.
Well, thanks again for reading. —siroχo 06:58, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
No problem. You have been cordial during our interactions, and other than the fact that this particular song is not notable, I have no hard feelings. I do think I'm well-versed about Trainor stuff and that this song is not notable might have been more obvious to me than it is to others. Sorry for not being nicer about it. I wish you well with your future editing activities.--NØ 15:09, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

  • I really appreciate the message. One of the projects I wanted to undertake before retiring was to clean up this mess but I honestly don't know if I have the energy, especially with some swifties trolling the page. Anyways, hopefully that suggestion bot will be able to help me get inspired since I might use that at some point. I hope you are having a great weekend as well!--NØ 21:29, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
  • I am glad that I was able to help. I am completely out of the loop because I honestly have not idea why Swifties would vandalize 30, but it is not like these fandoms make a lot of sense on the best of days. I hope you get some inspiration, but obviously no pressure with that and I would respect and support any choice you make that is best for you as that is matters the most. Aoba47 (talk) 23:41, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

Apologies for the double response. I was just curious if you had any plans for future FACs. No pressure of course and I completely understand if you have no desire or intentions to do one again. If you wanted to take a break from Meghan Trainor articles, I could see you doing more Adele or Olivia Rodrigo album or song articles. Also, as a super random aside, a coffee shop I sometimes go to played Rodrigo's album on their record player and it made me think of you lol. Again, sorry for the random post and for always being so nosy lol. Aoba47 (talk) 19:41, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

Aoba47 I'm so sorry, for some reason I completely missed this message! One's eyes just immediately go to the pretty sapphire right below, lol. On the Meghan front, I'm kind of out of ideas on what articles I could work on (doing a topic currently). I did think of you while nominating "Title" since you had said you preferred it to "Dear Future Husband". Maybe you have some suggestions for what my next one should be, lol. Rodrigo articles are experiencing high fan activity currently so they will probably take some time to be stable enough to move towards FACs.
On a super random note, I was going through your FAs recently and discovered "Candy" by Foxy Brown, which is truly a banger! Your work is really a gold mine of great R&B and rap songs.--NØ 20:04, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
No need to apologize. I will try to think of something fun that you would enjoy lol. Rodrigo's articles do get a lot of traffic and activity so I understand how that would make them less-than-ideal for FACs. I am glad that you enjoyed "Candy". I love the Neptunes's production during this time period and I have a soft spot for Kelis in general. The song is so early-2000s in the best possible way. I do enjoy working on articles about R&B and rap songs. I try to not over-think my project choices and just work work on whatever catches my interest if that makes any sense. Hope you have a good weekend! Aoba47 (talk) 23:02, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
