Croatian Littoral DYK nomination

Hi! Thanks for fixing the Croatian Littoral DYK hook. However, I revised the hook once again, because it appeared to me that you missed the point of the hook itself - I added a comment to the nomination page explaining illogical nature of use of the term for two different and overlapping regions, making IMO the hook interesting. WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's New York City Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions) and United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, England Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Bavaria Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. I saw your request for help in linking baseball articles to Portal:Baseball. Stubs on Baseball Mountain

There are no true Stubs near the top of the Baseball Mountain that you have catalogued.

I don't often visit WP talk: Baseball but today is one of the exceptions. Your project caught my eye there; so did the bright red "Stub" classifications for some biographies whose progress you are tracking. Just now I visited all (if i clerk correctly) seven Hall of Fame member and three Most Valuable Player biographies in that grade and I daresay every one is a true Start. Even Vern Law Frank McCormick with no References [and meagre content].

That cataloging project was undertaken by a group of editors, myself included, but not only me. We took ratings from article talk pages. I do agree from having looked at some of them that there are articles that are at a different state than their rating. Those all should be fixed. I welcome you to re-rate those articles to the quality rating you feel they deserve. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:23, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, McCormick is definitely a stub, and easy DYK candidate. I may do the expanding, but I have others I want to get to first. We do need to reconsider some article ratings. Cardinals-Royals rivalry

I see that the outcome of the second AfD is no consensus, and the article remains. I just wanted to say that you made some very valid points and it was a productive conversation both times (even though I recognize you didn't nominate it the second time). I would have accepted either outcome. Since the article hasn't been deleted I will do my best to improve it based upon the suggestions made. However, I also sincerely hope you will take a look at the other rivalry articles that were mentioned with the same critical eye. Many of them are in desperate need of improvement, if not perhaps their own AfD nomination (though that is perhaps the most drastic measure). TempDog123 (talk) 07:46, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I can also appreciate a good discussion with valid differences of opinion that doesn't degenerate into anything mean spirited. No need to sign up anywhere, but it may be a good idea to run by someone, such as myself, what you want to add. Re-directs

Because it is 100% pointless. Do the research, see if they are notable and then create them. Don't just re-direct them just so you can have your name be the first one to appear in the history.--Yankees10 17:10, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

There will soon be info on Buxton on those pages, even if it's only their draft position. I'm not quite sure why you don't think they're notable, since coverage on draft prospects exists. For Buxton, I can find this, this, and this, just on the first page of the Google search results. High school athletes can be notable. WP:Crystal Ball. Come on man you aren't new here, how do you know there will be info on them on the article? Anything can happen between now and then. Again, the only reason I believe you made these re-directs was to have your name first in the history. There is no crystal ball issue; they are mentioned in reliable sources as top prospects expected to go in the first round of the draft. I never said anything more than that. The reason I created the redirects was because these amateur athletes are likely to meet GNG, and as the draft approaches, it will be good to be able to direct people to relevant pages if they choose to search their names on Wikipedia. If I really cared that much about whether or not I created an article first, I'd have an admin fix whatever happened with Mason Williams; I created a redirect for that which was deleted for some unknown reason (I failed to watchlist it), and then you created the page shortly thereafter. Just because I keep track of these things on my user pages doesn't mean I'd compromise the encyclopedia just to run up my numbers. Please WP:AGF here. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:19, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

I acknowledge in hindsight that I should have at a minimum listed them at the 2012 draft page, similar to how it's been done on the 2010 and 2011 draft pages, before creating those redirects. I won't recreate them now, because it's a fair point that too many redirects make a mess. I think Buxton is likely notable, and I'll only recreate it if my research confirms that, though I just got busy and may not get to it for a while. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:33, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

I know that it happened, I'm not questioning that. I don't think we should be mentioning every routine five game suspension, though. College alumni categories

Hi Muboshgu, just as a friendly heads up, whenever there is a college athlete who is categorized in that school's athletic category (baseball player, basketball player, football player, etc.) there is no reason to also include his parent alumni category. When I added Category:Gardner–Webb Runnin' Bulldogs baseball players to Blake Lalli, for example, that GW baseball player category is already a subcategory of the overall school alumni category, which I saw you added. Per WP:CAT, only the lowest applicable categories get included in articles. Yes and here's basically why: While there may only be one player in that particular category at this time, we know for a fact that as time progresses it will gradually get filled with new and uprising players. Another reason is that some biographies of players who would be applicable for those particular categories (i.e., ones which currently only have one player in it) still haven't even been made for historically notable players. In the late 1800s and first half of the 1900s, it was extremely common for college athletes to play numerous sports for one school. Many, many football players, for instance, were also on their schools' baseball teams, and so both the football and baseball player categories would apply – it's just a matter of stumbling across an article of such a player and adding in the additional category. Also, the end-goal for Category:College baseball players in the United States is to have every possible college included so that any baseball player bio articles that get created in the future will have that category to use in order to see how that player should be categorized. While having only one player in such a category might seem silly for now, keep in mind that Wikipedia is a work in progress and that more people can be added to those categories later. WikiCup 2012 May newsletter

We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Scotland Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, New York City Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. Uh, why would the re-direct from February matter? Theres no history there other than one edit. And its not even really an edit its a re-direct. Why would I have created the article at Oscar Taveras only to move it to Óscar Taveras when I could have easily just started it off new at Óscar Taveras? Doesn't make sense. A somewhat similar situation to this is the Archie Bradley (baseball) article. That article was a re-direct turned into a disambiguation page. Since there was a bunch of history on the baseball player in the Archie Bradley disambiguation it was necessary to fix it, but if it was just a re-direct I wouldn't have seen the problem in creating the Archie Bradley (baseball) page off fresh.--Yankees10 16:01, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Because the content already existed, you duplicated existing work. Even if the content isn't exactly the same, it should have added to what I did, as opposed to this, which seemingly erases it. If you had created a blurb and then I had gone around it to create an article, I don't imagine you'd be thrilled with it. RC reverts - Say what??

OK, rather than engage in dueling reverts, let me explain what my thinking was; u can do the same, &, hopefully we can reach some kind of consensus; I did an awful lot of work on RC over the first 8 or 9 years of this century, & it really grieves me 2C so many easily correctible inaccuracies on the record.

1st of all, As 4 the Baseball Career section, there r no real errors per se, but it is extremely sketchy. If anything, I probably should've done MORE (e.g. give at least general time frames 4 both contracts, 2 say nothing of at least mentioning the joint Dodgers/Crabbers clinic/tryout where both Campanis & Zorilla 1st saw RC in the summer of '52). As 4 what I DID do, it just seems kind of silly NOT 2 mention the extensively documented Joe Black scouting angle if you're gonna bring him up in the first place. And then, out of the blue, 2 just give 1954 for Sukeforth seems needlessly vague & somewhat misleading; leading one who doesn't know better 2 at least wonder if RC hadn't been wasting away in Montreal 4 a couple of years B4 Sukeforth finally showed up (whereas, in fact, it was more like 2 months).


As 4 the 2 sections, Pittsburgh Pirates & The 1960s, here I was simply correcting obvious & egregious errors (in most cases, assertions that aren't even supported by their own sources).

1) "During the middle of the season, Clemente was involved in a car accident" [emphasis added]

Am I missing something? Even the source that supposedly supports this utterly inaccurate statement ("During the winter, a drunken driver had rammed into his car at sixty miles per hour." [emphasis added]) in fact contradicts its chronology entirely.


2) "With the American League ahead 4–3 in the tenth inning, Clemente hit a double that gave the National League a decisive 5–4 win." [emphasis added]

While the AL undeniably had a 4-3 lead going into the inning, & RC certainly did get the game-winning hit, it was FOUR-FOUR by the time he got 2 the plate, & the hit he got was a single. Again, check your own source: "Then he brought his bat around and smashed a line drive to right field. As Roberto raced for first, Willie Mays rounded third and headed for home. The National League had won by a score of 5-4!" Even if this had been a line drive off the top of the CF fence (which this obviously was NOT; tho, as I pointed out, pre-your revert, RC did hit a couple of blasts of that magnitude in this game), it still would've just counted as a single. In fact, ironically, the only double in that inning was the one hit by Mays to make it 4-4 B4 RC ever got 2 the plate.


3) "This condition limited his role with the Pirates in the first half of the 1965 season, during which he batted an average of .257. He was inactive for several games during this stage of the campaign before being fully active; when he returned to the starting lineup, he hit in thirty-three out of thirty-four games and his average improved to .340."

OK, I've gotta take this one sentence at a time. At the halfway point of the '65 season (i.e. after 81 games), which btw, came exactly THREE games B4 the end of that much-ballyhooed 34-game stretch, Clemente was batting not .257, but .334. As Casey Stengel liked 2 say, u can look it up (perhaps in the batting log u deleted). The last time during the '65 season that RC finished a game at .257 was after game #31 (of which, btw, the supposedly 'limited' RC missed exactly 3) - i.e. less than a FIFTH of the way thru the season. Moreover, as I already pointed out, three games later, RC actually would hit bottom, with a .235 average. It was from THAT point that the dramatic & decisive 16-game stretch began, delivering Clemente from an unheard-of .235 2 a much more familiar neighborhood, 91 points north of there, & just 3 points below the .329 mark at which he'd finish the season - & lead the league. (In fact, from that point forward, he'd never dip lower than .319.) Obviously, THAT was the turning point of RC's season, those 91 points in 16 games being considerably more crucial than the 34-game stretch which brought him to .340, NOT - as is clearly implied - from .257, but from an already quite presentable .305.

Regarding the second sentence, granted that the phrase "during this stage of the campaign" becomes problematic now that the credibility of the preceding sentence (to whose chronology "this stage" refers) has been utterly shredded, the fact remains that there was indeed a one-week stretch (after, btw, RC had played the entire month of April), during which, if not exactly "inactive," RC did have a "limited role," i.e. one week (5/2 thru 5/8) during which he either sat or pinch-hit late, twice staying in 2 play the field. This, however, in NO WAY corresponds with the 34-game streak, his 5/9 return 2 action preceding its start by almost a month. In other words, since the week of 'inactivity' ends well B4 either the 34- OR 16-game streaks begin, there's really no reason 4 its continued inclusion in this article. It doesn't really signify nor correspond 2 anything, neither struggle nor streak.

What I saw in your edits were drastic, unsourced changes being made to an article that had reached Good Article status, which would indicate that it's been vetted. Now, it sure is possible that there are inaccuracies, as you're pointing out, which indeed should be corrected. However, you didn't cite sources for all of them (or any of them? I can't remember right now). I also saw POV wording that overall weakened the article, and made it susceptible for being delisted. I would not mind waiting until the GAN backlog elimination drive is over. I am trying to do 25 reviews and may end up having 20 GACs nominations to respond to during the drive. Winning percentage

Winning percentage is not really a percentage but a decimal fraction to the thousandth place although the term is commonly used, and we understand its meaning. It is commonly reported in baseball pitchers' statistics. It belongs where I placed it. In fact baseball recognizes the pitchers with the all-time highest winning percentages. I would consider it major, since it's the top tournament for the under 18 age group. I've gone back and forth on some tournaments like the World Junior Baseball Championship, World Port Tournament, and others. Travis Jackson at GA

I've done the review which you nominated and have done pretty much all the leg work on the article. My general feeling was that I'd like to cut down on the number of very short sentences in places and have noted where I think we can improve the flow of the prose. I also had a query about the image used plus a question about him being 'overlooked' for the Hall of Fame. It might look a long list but it's only small stuff really which can easily be addressed to nudge it into GA so I'll put it on hold for the time being. It's all on the review page anyway. Minor league player re-directs

I just have a request that you please avoid or at least limit the amount of players that you re-direct to the minor league pages. I'm going to be honest here its kind of annoying when I look up a player to create and it's redirected. But thats only part of the reason for the request. Personally I think these re-directs create unnecessary clutter on the minor league pages. If we are gonna have them, I think they should be the ones that were created, nominated for deletion, and it was determined that it should be re-directed (Archie Bradley for example). Not just re-directs for the sake of being re-directs (Jose Fernandez (pitcher)). Overall though I don't think the pages should have any player bios on them and just have the rosters. There is such a random assortment of players on there, scrubs, top prospects, etc it just makes no sense. I'm gonna bring this up to WP:Baseball to see what they think as soon as the winning percentage discussion cools off.--Yankees10 20:36, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure I see what the problem is. The idea with the minor league baseball page is to create blurbs for players who may not yet be notable enough for their own pages. When I create a redirect and a section, I always put in enough information to suggest why this person is worth discussing, such as today's All-Star Futures Game roster announcement. I agree that we shouldn't have too many players mentioned, but I don't think it's excessive at this point. – Muboshgu (talk) 23:32, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Well my main point is probably that I don't think they should be there anymore, in that case I will bring it to WP:Baseball. I think either a player has an article or not and there should be no re-directs. Regarding your second point though, if all of the players that appear in an All-Star Futures Game, is a top prospect, etc, I think it will get to the point where it is excessive. I recently saw you added Ryan Berry to the Orioles page, I mean lets be honest, I don't see anything notable enough with that guy to have a blurb. Okay, I can see that Ryan Berry is borderline at best. There absolutely should be redirects, because those are navigation aids. If you want to look for, say, "Tyler Austin", you'd type in that name. I was disappointed to see you rolled back my edit to the Florida Governor race for 2014.

Why do you refute an independent attempting to run for Governor?

If you do a search for Florida Governor 2014 then you will see that I have produced many videos for becoming Governor. I did not feel my edits were biased in anyway but instead just stated that an independent was running.

If you would please let me know what edit you'd accept to state that in the wiki and not revert the change.

I'm sensitive to the issue of how we portray Leyritz.
