Possible Musicals Template (?)

It's almost sickeningly generic, but I've been messing with a possible new template for musicals. Something eh...along these lines...is what's going to be the best for a new template. The sample I picked only received notable awards for its actors, so it probably wasn't a good choice for an example, but tell me what you think. – warpedmirror (talk) 04:18, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

That's a good start. I was thinking we could have fields like "Music", "Lyrics", AND "Music and Lyrics": that way, for something like H2$ where the same person did the music and lyrics, the same name wouldn't have to be repeated in the infobox. (The infobox for Rent looks particularly silly....) I like the idea of the "Productions" field, but we could probably put the theater there, too. (BTW -- I could be wrong, but I don't think Jekyll and Hyde was actually staged in 1990; I think it was just a concept recording.) We could easily add a field for the major awards without it getting too unwieldly. Also, a link to the IBDB site would prohably be a good idea. I don't want to jump into your sandbox without asking, but if you want me to fiddle, I'd be more than happy to. —  MusicMaker 04:36, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps "Based On" instead of, or below "Origin" for those plays based on books, poems, characters, or other things of that nature. Also, maybe we should include a "Rights Managed By" or something like that for shows that MTI or Samuel French (or anybody else) own. We could also add a "Total Performances" part for plays where it is easy to find(it's listed on ibdb.com for each show and simply needs to be tallied). If we're staying away from individual production information (directors, scenic design) then we might also want to stay away from individual production awards, listing only awards for the book, lyrics, music or things like that. Also, on a side note, if the new infobox remove fields for any information in the current infobox, that information needs "a place to be" in the article itself so that no information is lost. Just my two cents, feel free to take em' or not :-D omtay38 13:10, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
I like the "Based On" idea instead of "Origin". Again, "Total Performances" might be hard to tabulate between the different productions, in addition to being useful only for shows that have closed. Personally, I think there are a couple of problems with a "Rights Managed By" section: it may be hard to find that information for some of the older shows and I think it might be construed as advertisement for the individual rights holder. On the other hand, I know that when I was in my student musical theater group in college, it always took WAY too much time trying to figure out who held what rights. Everything else you said, however, I agree. —  MusicMaker 19:04, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Wiki Musicals and such

Hi! Thank you for the good wishes on my Wikibreak and all the support, especially looking after the POTO article.

I wasn't aware that there was a Wiki Musicals project...thank you for the heads up! I would love to be a part of this when I am back on a regular basis (probably some time in August). I do agree with you that we need more coverage, and better coverage, of theatre/musicals on the website, and I'd love to help with that.

Have a great summer! Namaste, Mademoiselle Sabina 16:25, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks to you for catching that list of actors on POTO! Dunno where my head was.
Yeah, the WikiProject was extremely dormant until I decided to get it up and running. I could tell that there were several editors "chomping at the bit" as it were; there seems to be quite a bit of interest. Just in the past couple of days there's been a lot of work done by several interested parties.
Just check us out when you return; I'm sure we'll be better organized by that point! —  MusicMaker 18:56, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello and thanks for the note. Sounds like fun! It looks like we have a lot of work ahead of us. Take care, Drenched

Reply from the Opera Project

Thanks for the greetings!

In the case of operettas (normally performed by opera singers) we have treated them as part of the opera world and they are categorized as such on WP. They are also included in our extended list of works at The opera corpus. Most operettas are French or German and their editing follows the Opera Project style (including foreign language rules) based on the New Grove Dictionary of Opera.

The opera corpus does include some musicals (such as Show Boat, West Side Story etc.) but these obviously lie within your territory and of course we defer to you on how they are edited.

Best of luck with your project. - Kleinzach 21:51, 2 July 2006 (UTC) [copied from Opera Project page]

Hello, I noticed you tagged Porgy and Bess as a Musical. However, the general consensus (at least since the Houston Grand Opera production in 1976) is that it is an opera. It requires operatic singers, an operatic conductor, a large orchestra, and is almost completely sung through. I have removed the tags. --Alexs letterbox 03:48, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Musicals

Hi. I'm focusing more on the Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_York_Theatre. I personally have more of an interest in musicals, but this project covers all broadway, off-broadway, and off-off-broadway shows (plays and musicals). We have an extensive to-do list, and it would be great if you want to continue your enthusiasm with this project.

Talk pages -- musical theatre project

Hi. I'm getting confused about the talk pages. See:

and

Ssilvers 00:39, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Can you please combine the first two talk pages that you listed, so it is clear where to post? Maybe all we need to do is copy everything from one to the other, and then leave a link on the abandoned page for a little while? Thanks, -- Ssilvers 03:59, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

By the way, your page says you're a professional singer. What do you sing? I've sung mostly operetta and a little bit of opera, mostly in community theatre. Best regards, Ssilvers 05:11, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for combining the talk pages, and thanks for leading the charge on the musicals project. Ssilvers 12:29, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your message about editing talk pages. I routinely edit my talk page to delete material that I no longer need. I certainly will not edit your talk page, if you prefer. Sorry! 21:26, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
I understand that Wiki policy expressly permits one to delete anything and everything from one's own talk page. I will "watch" the Project talk page, and anything you write there will be preserved. I definitely intend to delete nearly everything from my talk page periodically, when I no longer feel I need the information. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I feel strongly about this. I really hope you understand, and I am sorry that I cannot accomodate you in this instance. Best regards, Ssilvers 21:40, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
I apologize, the situation is a little more complicated than I thought before: There is a Netiquette guideline called Can I do whatever I want to my own user talk page? that begins, "Most users treat their user talk pages like regular talk pages, and archive the contents periodically..... Others delete comments after they have responded to them." There is a similar staement on the page about vandalism of wikitalk pages that says that you can delete or archive from your own talk page but, for instance, don't remove a "caution" from your talk page until you show that it is wrongful.
The guideline goes on to say that people want to be able to use other people's user talk pages to communicate with them, so it is polite to make it available for them to do that. How about this: If you write something on my talk page, I will not delete it for a week, and if you decide you need it, you can copy it somewhere for your future use? Hi musicmaker5376, I noticed just now that there are loads of red links in this template you created Template:Stephen Schwartz. I know nothing about the subject so can't fix it!-- Flutefluteflute Talk Contributions 16:43, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Musicals project

Hi. Anything we can do to get the musicals project active again? Best regards, -- Ssilvers 03:04, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks a lot....however, two of my students are telling me that my "user check" or whatever is going to turn out negative because we all post from a university. Either way, I hope to continue to help with the Phish pages, which is all I really care about editing. Thanks again. FrankStevens2007 23:25, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: Phish photographs

The concerns you have, namely the lack of permission from Phish to take and distribute these photographs, are covered by personality rights. Phish in no way permitted the release of these photographs, and its band members are still entitled to several rights under the law. Mainly, none of these photographs maybe modified and redistributed in a manner that gives the impression that the band endorses any particular product, service, or publication. The band members still have control of photographs of their likeness, and any unauthorized publication may result in legal complications. Yet, notwithstanding that disclaimer, the photographs are still primarily the property of the photographer. The photographer has the right to claim copyright, and the right to license and redistribute these images - provided that any action does not infringe on basic personality rights. In practice, on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, such images are allowed even without any release of personality or publicity rights. Wikimedia does not guarantee the merchantibility of these properties, and so far there are thousands of (technically unauthorized) concert photographs available under free licenses. Their use on Wikipedia appears to be a trivial matter, since their only purpose is to illustrate or identify the band in question. If there is documented proof that the copyright owner of these photos releases them under a cc or gfdl license, then we are in the clear. Just to clarify: my knowledge of copyright issues is very basic and not at all dependable in legal matters. Still, we're OK if it seems like we're OK :) ˉˉanetode╦╩ 10:39, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Phish audio

In response to User_talk:Moeron#Phish_audio: Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. Lately, I haven't been on Wikipedia as much, so I am a bit tardy with some things. Anyway, yeah, I added in the Simpsons que. Any audio uploaded to the page would be great (just hopefully not too much). If you need my help at all, I have all of the Live Phish, as well as all of their studio albums, so if you need a particular track from any of those, I can splice it like I did with the Simpsons que. Just let me know ... and hopefully it won't take a week or more for me to get back to you. Cheers! -- moe.RON Let's talk | done 17:27, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

FDR from Seinfeld

Dear MusicMaker,

How come you deleted that page which myself and many other people worked hard on?

If you wan to delete something, you have to mark it for immediate deletion first using a template. Then an administrator has to approve of it and then he or she deletes it.

As far as I know, you are not an administrator and so did not really have the authority to remove, merge, or do anything of that nature independently.

Can we please talk this out and come out with a unilateral decision.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Psdubow 00:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

The page wasn't deleted; the information that was in the page was deleted and a redirect set up. Since I did, I do. There is no reason for a one-off character like that to have his own page -- he had under ten lines, and everything that needs to be said regarding his character is on the main list of characters.
Furthermore, my decision was unilateral: "uni" means "one", "lateral" means "side". It was one-sided. I'm pretty sure you mean "multilateral". —  MusicMaker5376 21:42, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh okay, I thought you deleted it. Never mind.

Psdubow 22:18, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Yor right. I did mean multilaterally.

Fair use rationale for Image:Down_With_Disease.ogg

Thanks for uploading Image:Down_With_Disease.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 09:39, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
