Harrisburg, Houston

Regarding the Wikipedia article,"Harrisburg, Houston": The article states: "The location of Harrisburg, which had been platted by Harris in 1826, was the Allen Brothers' first choice. The brothers could not buy Harrisburg since Harris was dead, and no clear title to the land existed. The brothers founded Houston in an area which was the brothers' second choice."

Perhaps more accurately, Harrisburg was the third attempt to create a town site, and Houston represents the fourth attempt. Before making their agreement with Mrs. Harris for the Harrisburg site, the Allen Brothers had already invested in the Galveston Town Company and been rebuffed by Nicholas Clopper in an attempt to buy land at a place now called Morgan's Point. Offline reference: David G. McComb, Houston: A History, University of Texas Press (Austin:1981), pp 11-12 (Second printing, First printing - 1969)

The article states, "After the Civil War, the railroad expanded and changed its name to the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway."

It's probably more accurate to say that the original Buffalo Bayou, Brazos & Colorado Railroad failed, and its assets were purchased and reorganized under the name of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway after the Civil War. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galveston,_Harrisburg_and_San_Antonio_Railway

Andrew Forest Muir's 1960 railway article

Hello, I just accepted your article on William J. Hutchins. I notice you refer to the above article twice. I think for wikipedia purposes having a reference to the entire article will be fine, can you let me know which pages it is on, because I don't have access to that journal here. That's OK. I've recently been watching a BBC documentary on the history of railways in the UK, so Hutchins seems a very familiar figure. That's sorted now, I think. Rankersbo (talk) 10:09, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. I have made extensive edits to the Rice Lofts article, but I still see room for much improvement:

  • Needs photos of the interiors, old and new
  • Needs improved descriptions of the public parts of The Rice Hotel
  • Needs photos or illustrations of the previous buildings
  • Needs expansion of Post Lofts era
  • Needs more material about the cultural significance of the various buildings on the site
  • Maybe something about the Long Row (from the Republic Era), or perhaps that deserves a separate article
  • Cleanup some of the formatting

Maybe some collaboration is possible. Oldsanfelipe (talk) 08:35, 12 November 2014 (UTC)oldsanfelipe

Thank you so much for helping out with Houston-related articles!

Do you know any friends who speak Spanish? If you want you can invite them to the Spanish Wikipedia to write articles about Houston and/or to translate articles written in English.

Salmon P. Chase

Thanks for your message. I don't have any particular interest in that article - I probably reverted the edit as a result of checking back the edits of an editor who had vandalised other articles that I have on my watchlist. As a general rule, if I am checking for copyright violations, I check back through the article history to see if any one editor has made major edits to the article at any one time, without giving appropriate sources. There may be some in that article, I haven't checked. But, another possibility is that the sites you have found may be WP:MIRROR sites, that simply copy all their information from articles here. If you do think there has been a serious copyright violation, the best thing to do would be to look through the guidance at WP:DCV, and raise the issue on the article talk page. Editors much more experienced in these matters than me will then be able to take a look. Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:59, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

The Mexican Municipio

Reading many pages about cities in Mexico, I have seen the English pages render "municipio" into "municipality." The meaning of "municipio" may vary between different countries according to their administrative systems, just as the term "county" means something different in England relative to the United States. I am not certain about my understanding of the Mexican administrative system, but I am certain that a Mexican municipio is not a municipality, which in American English, refers to an incorporated city or town.

One example is Monclova, Mexico, which says Monclova, "is a city and seat of the surrounding municipality of the same name in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila." Hence the confusion at least in American English. This looks to be analogous to Dallas, which refers to a city called "Dallas," which is in Dallas County. Dallas is the county seat within the county of the same name of the city. So the usage of "municipality" in the Monclova article maps out better in American English to "county." However, in the United States, counties are subdivisions of the states where they are nested, and not under the direct control of the federal government. State law defines powers of the counties. In England, a county is a subdivision of the national government. I am unsure of my reading of the Mexican administrative system, but I believe Mexican municipios are subdivisions with states, but established by and under some direct control of the federal government.

Would "county" be a better translation for a Mexican "municipio," or is this in some way wrong, or would it be confusing to non-American speakers of English? Oldsanfelipe (talk) 18:00, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

I don't know about Mexico in particular, but it happens that "counties" vs. "municipalities" came up for U.S. National Register of Historic Places listings in Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, there are 78 municipalities (see Municipalities of Puerto Rico, which links in its intro to the term municipality) but nothing translated as counties in Wikipedia. For some purposes U.S. government agencies treat the municipalities as county-equivalents. This is similar to the boroughs and other areas in Alaska, which does not have counties, and to the parishes of Louisiana. In Virginia and Maryland and perhaps other U.S. states there are some cities which are separately incorporated and not part of any county. For the Wikipedia coverage of NRHP-listed sites (see National Register of Historic Places listings in Puerto Rico) we never introduced the word "county". I hope this is sort of helpful, somehow. To seek wider input, perhaps you could post a question at Talk:Municipality or Talk:County or some article about geography of Mexico or talk page of the WikiProject for Mexico, and post links at the others. cheers, --doncram 15:32, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
This is helpful. If I had only looked, there is a good article on Municipalities of Mexico and a good article on Counties of the United States. Maybe the solution is to link the individual articles on Mexican places to the article on Mexican municipalities.Oldsanfelipe (talk) 18:57, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
Ah, yes, that sounds like the solution, indeed. --doncram 14:45, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

RM process

You asked at Talk:James L. Autry House about the process for the requested move underway. wp:RM is, in my opinion, one of the better processes in Wikipedia, in that it runs along well usually without a lot of drama. It brings in uninvolved editors in a good way, usually. After a week, I think it is, the move decisions are made. Where there can be any reasonable chance of disagreement, I use the regular RM process. One can also request a "technical" RM if there is no possibility of any real discussion.

You mentioned having suggested move of Rice Lofts to Rice Hotel in the past, but I don't see anything about that at the article's Talk page. How about you open a requested move there, following instructions at wp:RM. On basis that Rice Hotel is the longer-running name for the place, how the place was known as when it was a significant place. And as you pointed out there are multiple other recent names, none having longstanding usage. cheers, --doncram 14:14, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. Perhaps my memory fails me on the Rice Hotel: talk, but it is also likely that I did not follow the right procedure even if I had raised it. In any case, I have discovered that article had been named the "Rice Hotel," but it first moved to "Rice Post Lofts" in 2008, about five years before I had been involved with Wikipedia: "Revision as of 03:05, 24 March 2008, WhisperToMe (moved Talk:Rice Hotel to Talk:Post Rice Lofts: current name - Only use past name if building no longer exists and the past name happens to be most common)." Then it was moved a second time, not long after I had started Wikipedia: "03:37, 6 November 2014‎ (EdJohnston moved page Talk:Post Rice Lofts to Talk:Rice Lofts: Requested at WP:RM as uncontroversial." This is relevant for requesting the move, and it will save an administrator some work.
I plan to raise the naming issue when I re-read and re-evaluate the page. In other words, after I look for any mistakes I may have made the last time I edited it. This will be a slog for me because I am not articulate with the Wikipedia meta-language. Oldsanfelipe (talk) 14:55, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
Ah, well, that was a "technical" move then, not allowing for a discussion. Since someone else must have thought that was sensible, while we are inclined to think "Rice Hotel" is a better name, that establishes a new move request should allow for being "controversial" or "potentially controversial". Though I doubt there will be any drama. EdJohnston is a long-standing active editor who is helpful, pretty straight-forward by the way. I wonder if "WhisperToMe" is associated with drama, i don't recall. Anyhow, to request the move, when you are ready, will be a good exercise for you. :) I happen to be quite experienced in Wikipedia meta-language stuff now, but not very literate in other stuff. Happen to be downloading an alternative to MicroSoft Word right now, and am hoping it will work out, knock on wood. cheers, --doncram 17:58, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

WikiProjects Ships

Hi @Brad101:

I noticed that you added the WikiProjects Ships template to a page I created, Verne Swain. For some reason, I thought that smaller vessels were outside of its purview. There are two somewhat-related articles which might fall into the project, or might not: Joseph "Diamond Jo" Reynolds and Streckfus Steamers. If it is not too much trouble, would you take a look at these? I am thinking of creating other articles for companies performing steamboat transportation. Vandalism question

When an account is created just to make bad edits (has made or tried to make at least 3 intentionally bad edits) I usually report them to AIV as a vandalism only account. Note that you should avoid reporting well meaning but confused editors who make test edits, these editors just need to be directed to the sandbox. Tornado chaser (talk) 21:46, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

Just thought of something to add, you mentioned an edit summary that said "Tag: possible vandalism" this was not typed by the user, but is an automated tag, meaning an anti-vandal algorithm has judged the edit to be suspect. Tornado chaser (talk) 21:55, 27 November 2017 (UTC) (Originally posted on Oldsanfelipe User page. Moved by Oldsanfelipe to talk page.) Oldsanfelipe (talk) 22:28, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

I question this edit for Newark and the corresponding addition to Jersey City, as the source says nothing specific about either of those cities. Similarly, the details about the Ocean City, New Jersey may be relevant to the area, but not that city. For now, I will remove the New York metro details from the Jersey City and Newark articles, but will look for lower-level analysis about those two cities. Hi @Alansohn:
Thanks for the heads up and the explanation. Data for a metro is very dilute and the results are difficult to apply to a constituent community. My own idea is to be extremely precise in distinguishing between cities and metros when citing the data. However, I will defer to your decision. In the future I will limit my edits on mode share data to citations which are specific to Newark and Jersey City. cheers, Oldsanfelipe (talk) 15:31, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

Free State of Galveston

It is not I, but you who are confused about the meaning and proper usage of "infamous." There are degrees of badness in the world, and "infamy" is one of the greatest. I shouldn't have to do your homework for you, but here is what the Merriam-Webster online dictionary definition of "infamous":

1 : having a reputation of the worst kind : notoriously evil - an infamous traitor
2 : causing or bringing infamy : disgraceful - an infamous crime
3 : convicted of an offense bringing infamy

And here is the same dictionary's definition of the noun "infamy":

1 : evil reputation brought about by something grossly criminal, shocking, or brutal
2 a : an extreme and publicly known criminal or evil act
b : the state of being infamous

What is illegal is not necessarily nortoriously evil or grossly criminal, shocking, or brutal. What is shocking is the utterly careless and ignorant use of the word "infamous" that has become oh-so-trendy in just the last few years among the young, despite the many billions of dollars spent on their supposed education. If words are totally interchangeable, and no distinctions possible, then why not burn all the dictionaries, and let every individual just make up his/her/their own meanings from moment to moment? And I could say much, much more here, but you should be able to figure it out with this cheat sheet - and if you can't, then I feel very sorry for you.Textorus (talk) 19:26, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

As much as people would like to romanticize organized crime in the early part of the 20th century, I would not. According to one article from the Texas Monthly, "In the days when the notorious Maceo crime syndicate controlled the rackets, the gun was the primary instrument of persuasion, bribery ranking a close second. Vic C. Maceo was the last surviving member of the syndicate, a minor functionary in the gang that was headed by his cousins Rosario “Papa Rose” Maceo and Salvatore “Big Sam” Maceo." https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/one-last-shot/
I will let you argue that the Maceo brothers were not notoriously bad. In the meantime, nobody used "infamous" incorrectly in the Galveston article.Oldsanfelipe (talk) 19:55, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
It's a bad, but not infamous, rhetorical trick, to change the subject when you haven't a leg to stand on. The article was not talking about specific persons in the sentence I edited. Furthermore "notorious" is not synonymous with "infamous." And I wasted my time trying to educate you, as you are obviously incapable of understanding the plain, simple dictionary definitions I copied for you to see. So we have nothing further to discuss here. Do as you please, write as you please, I can't stop you - it's Wikipedia, wheee! Textorus (talk) 20:11, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
"1 : having a reputation of the worst kind : notoriously evil - an infamous traitor" You have no clue about how to evaluate an argument.Oldsanfelipe (talk) 20:19, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

The Streetcars of New Orleans

I give up. I'm trying to fix the references you have tagged, but it appears you are not finished with the article. I wrote most of it, and I'm trying to keep it to standards. Would you please let me know when you are done, so that I can work on it? Thank you. George Friedman HGFriedman (talk) 19:44, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

@HGFriedman:
I am re-reading a copy of Hannick and Charlton, and I am going page by page to make sure that I am getting the details correct. I can step away and do other things, or write my copy offline if you would like to work on it now.
Hopefully anyone who is editing the article is attempting to improve the article. The whole section "Beginnings", or so I am guessing because the citation was not up to standard, was cited by a single reference to a book with over 200 pages. I hope that's not the standard that you are trying to keep. Speaking of standards, there is quality control and there is WP:OWNERSHIP, and the latter is not a Wikipedia standard. Collaboration often results in the improvement in articles. I would like to collaborate in order to improve the article. Sound OK? Thanks for your note.
I don't feel the need to list a citation for each and every statement made. The point of the citation of Hennick & Charlton at the beginning of the History section was to obviate the need for dozens of individual citations. I think they would make the text very cumbersome to read, and I don't notice such voluminous citations in most Wikipedia articles I read. It would be different if the facts came from many different sources, but there exist very few sources other than Hennick & Charlton's book.
I think collaboration is great. Do you have something specific in mind? If so, I suggest we move our discussion to the Talk page of the article itself, because there are probably other Wikipedia authors who would be interested.
