Welcome to the 2023 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2023 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:16, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello PCN02WPS,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Mongolia at the 2018 Winter Olympics nomination

Hi PCN02WPS, it has been 8 days since you placed the article I nominated "Mongolia at the 2018 Winter Olympics" on hold, and it says when placed on hold "editors have seven days to address these issues". (Also, I'm rooting for you in the WikiCup this year, you got this!) MasterMatt12(talk) 23:43, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

FAC

Hi PCN02WPS, I hope you don't mind, but as you're a first-timer at FAC and didn't go down the picking a mentor route, I thought I'd just drop you some advice on how to handle reviewer's comments, particularly as it can affect later reviewers too.

  1. When reviewers criticise a piece of text, it's not personal - they are viewing the text through the prism of FAs;
  2. I don't think I've ever seen any reviewer be nasty to a nominator, so remember the comments are always about the text;
  3. When comments are left (like mine earlier today), reviewers like to see them deal with relatively soon after (no massive rush, but you should try and deal with them within 24 hours);
  4. New reviewers are less likely to make a start if the previous comments have not been dealt with;
  5. Not all comments have to be actioned, but they have to be dealt with. If you disagree with a comment, it's perfectly acceptable to leave a reason justifying your position (even you can link it to a source, the MOS or policy, then even better).

I hope these help. The article is good one - nicely written and without extraneous detail, so I hope it goes the distance. I pinged a couple of heavyweight FACers, so hopefully they will be able to chip with their comments too. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 20:38, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

  • I'm going to take the FAC off my watchlist now I've supported, but if you need any help or advice, please ping me or drop me a line. It's a good article worthy of an FAC (IMO), so hopefully the people I've pinged will turn up and help out. If it doesn't work out this time, wait two weeks, review some other FACs and it try again - it's good enough to get through and I'll see if I can strong arm a few others to have a look! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 22:11, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the kind words and for all of your help here and at the review! I reviewed an article myself and asked one reviewer I've interacted with previously. I'm probably going to do a few more of each, and I appreciate you pinging some reviewers that you've seen around as well. I will definitely take your advice as well so thank you for leaving that! So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Thank you today for the article, introduced: "John C. Young, the fourth president of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, was instrumental in saving the "struggling" college; Centre's graduating class size went from two students in his first year to 43 in his last. He served as president for 27 years, longer than any other in Centre's history, before he died in office and was buried in Danville. During his life he was also a minister; he was licensed to preach in 1827 and took the pastorate of Danville's Presbyterian Church four years after coming to Centre. The popularity of his preaching led him to open a new church in Danville in 1852; he was also elected moderator of the Presbyterian Church General Assembly the next year. In addition, he is the namesake of an academic building on campus and was the father of a future Centre president."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:00, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Tom Spragens

Hey, PCN. Hope you don't mind the additions I made to Thomas A. Spragens. As a fellow historian and frequent contributor to WikiProject Biography, I applaud you for the awesome work you've done over the past few years! I'm not sure if you plan on eventually creating articles for other 20th century Centre presidents, but, if you're not aware, works first published in the U.S. between 1928 and 1977 without a copyright notice are in the public domain. U.S. works published from 1978 through February 28, 1989 without notice and without subsequent registration within 5 years are also in the public domain. See the Hirtle chart and this detailed breakdown of U.S. copyright laws over at Wikimedia Commons for more information. Centre's yearbooks going back to the 1890s are available online and all the ones I looked at while searching for photos of Spragens didn't have a copyright notice. I think they can be an awesome resource for you going forward. Best of luck with the FAC! Rockhead126 (talk) 21:18, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

@Rockhead126 I have been meaning to reach out and thank you - the images and information you've added has been immensely helpful. I have wanted to take the Spragens article to FAC ever since my article on John C. Young was promoted, but I was hesitant since I didn't have a picture of him. As a result you're pretty much the entire reason Spragens is at FAC right now in the first place, so to say I appreciate it is an understatement. Thank you for the copyright info and the link to Centre yearbooks; I have an admittedly lofty goal of getting all Centre presidents to GA (at least), so the old yearbooks will definitely be very valuable for some of those. Thank you again! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 21:44, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from JC-arts (23:41, 19 April 2023)

Hello, My two points of interest are 1 - publish my own biography content on a page with my arts (stage & visual) name 2 - help an artist friend with expanding bio content who has a “stub” after having that person (who I know personally) review the updates.

I just signed up and I’m not sure if my username should be what it is or if I should have used my arts name the username instead. Can you advise? Do I create a separate page (different from my profile username) for bio content with this username, or should I change or create a new username for self-provided long form bio?

Ex: JS-arts creates a page for the biography of John Smith (self) And, JS-Arts edits a page for the bio of Sally Doe (other person) … OR … John Smith publishes a full bio under the username of John Smith And, John Smith edits a page for the bio of Sally Doe --JC-arts (talk) 23:41, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

@JC-arts Hi there and welcome to Wikipedia! You are welcome to publish information about yourself on your user page, User:JC-arts (though keep in mind that many editors on Wikipedia choose to be anonymous, and that things you put on the internet often cannot be taken back). Creating a proper biographical article about yourself is strongly discouraged; it is hard to be unbiased and there is an obvious conflict of interest (and, of course, without knowing who you are, it is impossible to determine now whether or not you will be notable enough to warrant an article). For more information about autobiographical editing, you can read some project guidelines here. Your username isn't really relevant to any of this; some editors have their usernames as their full real names (e.g. User:John Smith) though this is not the case for the vast majority of users. Keep in mind either way that edits and additions you make, especially to an article which is a biography of a living person (whether or not you know them in real life) must adhere to strict guidelines regarding neutrality, verifiability, and original research, so adding something to a person's article just because they told you that something in real life would not be suitable. Happy to answer any other questions you have or clear up any confusion! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 07:20, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. It does clarify much, and this is not intended as storytelling, though strictly factual information for both myself and the other artist. 2601:645:C480:BCC0:BC78:D945:8A5E:ECF2 (talk) 08:47, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
@JC-arts I would still avoid writing anything autobiographical, especially as a brand-new user; doing that makes it seem to others that you created your account solely to write about yourself. A great way to get familiar with the project is picking something in the performing arts field or another interest of yours and writing or editing pages about that topic. I can help you find one if you're having trouble picking one out. As an aside - make sure you're logged in when you're editing! I make use of the "keep me logged in" checkbox on the login screen so that I know I'm logged in every time I access the site. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 15:38, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
OK, this all doesn’t seem like a great use of my time. I actually started the account because I saw a page of a person who’s art I collect. I am, but if I can’t write about someone I collect and no and I can’t write about anything that would be information about myself then there’s actually no point in me using this thing or contributing. It’s just not that important. I am going to look up and see what I can find about how to close my account or just remove it since I just started it and invest my time into other things. This just Hope seems to have no real value from my perspective. Thank you . If you have directions on how to remove or close a brand new account, please do advise. Participate at all for anyone. 2601:645:C480:BCC0:BC78:D945:8A5E:ECF2 (talk) 16:40, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article, "about a president of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky (my second such FAC nomination), who oversaw the college from the late 1950s until the early 1980s. After working for the government during World War II, assisting several presidents of Stanford, and leading Stephens College for five years, Spragens took the Centre job and kept it for 24 years. He oversaw integration of the college and the merger with the nearby Kentucky College for Women, nearly doubled the number of students and faculty, lessened the intense ties between the school and the Presbyterian Church, oversaw construction and upgrades of several campus buildings, and helped to start a collegiate athletic conference."! --

The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Hello, PCN02WPS. I've been thinking about nominating in the near future C. O. Brocato, a good article of mine, at WP:FAC; I'd like to get the opinions/reviews of several experienced editors first. New pages patrol newsletter

Hello PCN02WPS,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. GA reviews

Hi PCN02WPS! Do you think by the end of the month you'd have any time to review some of my good article nominations? I've been trying to get WikiCup points and could use a few of my nominations being reviewed (note that any Packers nominations are reserved for Gonzo fan2007). Thanks, BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:36, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

  • Thanks for offering to review Midler, though note that I was able to get two users (WikiOriginal-9 and Gonzo fan2007) to agree to review my nominations (Gonzo for Packers and WikiOriginal-9 for everything else football) - so you probably won't need to review my open nominations unless you want to . Precious anniversary

Precious
Three years!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:28, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

Thank you today for Ormond Beatty, introduced: "The seventh president of Kentucky's Centre College (and the third such president to be the subject of an article I have brought to FAC), Ormond Beatty was impactful to Centre throughout his entire life. He was an alum, class of 1835, and got offered a job to teach there before he'd even graduated (after three years, no less). After studying at Yale for a year, he began teaching at Centre in 1836 and continued for the next thirty-two years. He was president pro tem for two years and then unanimously elected to the full job, which he kept for the next 18. After resigning, he went right back to teaching and died in Danville two years later. He also went to numerous Presbyterian General Assemblies, was a trustee for the Kentucky College for Women, and was a Smithsonian climate observer, among other things. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:37, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Comments on FA nomination of Education

Hello PCN02WPS, I wanted to let you know that I have nominated the article Education for featured article status. So far, there has not been much response from reviewers. I was wondering whether you are inclined to have a look at it. I saw that you recently brought articles of several educators to featured article status, such as John C. Young (college president), Annie Dove Denmark, and Ormond Beatty. So if you have the time, your expertise in this field would be appreciated. The nomination page can be found at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Education/archive1. Phlsph7 (talk) 10:00, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

TFA nom?

Hi, you have listed Annie Dove Denmark for TFA at pending for February. I have tentatively reserved a date for it, but if you would still like it be considered you will need to nominate it at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests, which is now open. Cheers. @Gog the Mild Thanks for the reminder! Just added the nomination. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 18:14, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Walter A. Groves

On 17 December 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Walter A. Groves, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Walter A. Groves received a job offer from Centre College by telegram around the same time that he was forced to leave his work as a missionary in Iran due to the country being invaded? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Walter A. Groves. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Walter A. Groves), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
