Hello, RBMcIntosh. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Daedric Princes, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Daedric Princes, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for Deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discusion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, RBMcIntosh, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines, and may not be retained.

There's a page about creating articles you may want to read called Your first article. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the Teahouse, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{help me}} on this page, followed by your question, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --Animalparty! (talk) 19:05, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not Wikia

[edit]

Hi and welcome. Please note that Wikipedia articles have notability guidelines: subjects generally must have significant, third-party coverage. Do not make articles composed and sourced entirely from fan trivia sites like Wikia, as you did at Doom characters. They will likely be soon deleted or merged into notable parent articles (e.g. Doom (series)), For more info, see Manual of Style/Writing about Fiction and Notability (fiction). --Animalparty! (talk) 19:24, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article Doom characters has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable fancruft, with no unambiguous target for redirects (e.g. Doom novels, Doom (film), Doom (series) are equally plausible redirects)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Animalparty! (talk) 19:51, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Beauty Blender

[edit]

Hello RBMcIntosh,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Beauty Blender for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

  • Should not have been deleted A page for a notable game. Please don't use speedy deletion unless it is an obvious hoax. The normal deletion process allows for consensus. I would say, feel free to re-create the page.--INDIAN REVERTER (talk) 00:40, 21 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Control copyright icon Hello RBMcIntosh, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Draft:Munchkin Zombies expansion have been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:27, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Bagel machine

[edit]

Hi, I'm Jmcgnh. RBMcIntosh, thanks for creating Bagel machine!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. -- I wonder if this article should have been titled "Thompson bagel machine"

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Famousbirthdays.com as a source

[edit]

Hi RBMcIntosh. I noticed that you recently used famousbirthdays.com as a source for information in a biography article. Please note that there is general consensus that famousbirthdays.com does not meet the reliable sourcing criteria for the inclusion of personal information in such articles. (See Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_153#Is_famousbirthdays.com_a_reliable_source_for_personal_information). If you disagree, let's discuss it. Thanks. --Ronz (talk) 01:03, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:The history of the oof soundeffect requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/oof. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Jalen D. Jack Self moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Jack Self, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Do not create "placeholder" articles in mainspace

[edit]

Please use draftspace or Userspace to create your article drafts. Do not move them to mainspace until they're ready to be published. Thanks! Schazjmd (talk) 16:31, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Draft:Jay P. Fosgitt, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. creffett (talk) 22:53, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Draft:James Smith: Architect requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.scottisharchitects.org.uk/architect_full.php?id=408088.

RBMcIntosh, we need to talk. Really, we need to hear from you. The copyvios and all that are serious, and I wouldn't have placed all these blocks if it wasn't for that. It is possible, I am guessing from comments here, that you (maybe at long last) decided to have your students make separate accounts, but I don't know that for sure, nor do I have much reason to believe that you are actually listening to other Wikipedia editors, since you haven't responded much to concerns here.

Now, if you can explain what is going on, and if you assure us that you will assure that no seriously problematic drafts will come through (creating a ton of work for our editors here), I will be happy to unblock you. But I have to tell you that using Wikipedia in the way that you seem to have been using it, essentially as a web host for writing practice, is not OK: placing drafts on Wikipedia is not like placing them on Google Docs or whatever. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 14:56, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hello. I apologize for the lack of replies. Since the majority of the time there hasn't been a concern about having the content deleted (the students have generally moved on) I haven't seen a need to contest deletions and such. I can see how that could be taken poorly and apologize for it. I have been working towards getting the students to make separate accounts to combat the single account problem, but have run into issues where they cannot create accounts at school (AFAIK the school has been blocked by that since it first opened). Since the kids are spotty at making accounts at home I had this account made to allow them to work on their projects, which are meant to illustrate being a member of the wider online community and what it's like to be a Wikipedia editor. I've been fine tuning the projects, switching to mostly biographies in order to make it easier for sourcing, and working on catching copyright issues, but stuff still falls through the cracks. I'd be happy to have the students create the pages in user draft space, and then do a mass deletion at the end of the project (the pages are usually complete within 3 days) to ensure that any copyrighted material is quickly deleted. Would that work? Edit: Never mind, I did a review of the page on copyright material and it notes that you can't do this in user space either. I may just need to review the project. They make a draft in word, and I may need to just be content with that. RBMcIntosh (talk) 17:00, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Accept reason:

  • RBMcIntosh, I will go ahead and unblock you and the rest of the accounts. Here's the thing: yes, you are correct, you can't have any copyrighted content anywhere on Wikipedia. If that's not good for what you do, well...yeah. However (and I speak as a fellow teacher who has done Wikipedia projects), it's also a possibility to have your students learn about copyright, and have them do things that must comply. (I've had a student who continuously took copyrighted content and just didn't understand, I guess--I don't know how you can not understand that, and he didn't pass the class.) So, that is up to you. As long as you can argue that your kids are working towards articles and will attempt to go by the book (with references, without copyright, without BLP violations, etc.), you can continue to do this. And I'll add that we have people here, good people who can help, such as User:ReaderofthePack. Good luck, and let me know if I can help.

Oh, that block on your school--let me look into that. Yes, it can happen that a school IP is blocked if a whole bunch of people try to sign up for an account at one time: I had that happen, and it SUCKED. There are workarounds, and User:ReaderofthePack may know of a few. Drmies (talk) 17:23, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • RBMcIntosh, please turn your email option on. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 17:31, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • These training modules may prove to be helpful, as could this series of videos on using Visual Editor. The training modules are designed for college students but should be good for high school students as well, since they're also written with the mindset that some of the students will be first year and straight out of high school. IP block

[edit]

RBMcIntosh, the range you're operating from was blocked by JBW on 13:51, 13 June 2019 (I'm saying this so JBW can find it), for vandalism. I'm not quite sure what happened in June that made JBW place such a lengthy block there--possibly it's something done by one of the IPs in that range that got caught by the filter, something obscene or extremely stupid. JBW has been here longer than I have, so I trust that they must have had a good reason. I see a bunch of "regular" vandalism, though not all that much in the last year, and one or two of your kids must have been typing unblock requests saying "but I didn't do it"--to which the answer really always is "it doesn't matter--someone from this range did it".

Now, we have options here. We can ask JBW if they agree with an unblock for the range, or we can see if they're OK with taking away the block on "account creation", which means that your students can still create accounts from school. Or you can tell em to get on their phone and create an account while they're not on the school WiFi, haha. Let's see what JBW has to say. Drmies (talk) 17:40, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for drawing my attention to this, Drmies. I have removed the block on account creation. However, RBMcIntosh, I am concerned about the comment in the unblock request "I'd be happy to have the students create the pages in user draft space, and then do a mass deletion at the end of the project". That appears to mean that you intend to use Wikipedia as a web host for your students to do class work which is not intended actually to be contributions to the encyclopaedia. That is not compatible with Wikipedia's purpose. JBW (talk) Formerly known as JamesBWatson 16:45, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you JBW. I do believe that the intention is there, and maybe the potential, for some of these to become actual articles--but you are correct. Drmies (talk) 17:14, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, JBW. Yes, I already talked to Drmies about this problem a bit via email. I would definitely prefer to have the student's work hosted. It's always been the holy grail of the project for them. A couple of articles managed to be approved in the past, and I'd love to work on getting more of them hosted. I've switched them over to doing biographies from requested articles space (which tend to have better/easier sources) and I'm fine tuning the draft to article step. In the past I've gone over their articles and sent some to be checked for submission, which they sometimes pass, and then left the drafts with copyright problems to die (which is the crux of the problem). Ideally, I'd like all the kids to use the editor, and continue to work on their projects to fix copyright concerns. However, I'm pretty sure that even if I manage to get the lesson hammered in, I'm still going to see about a 10% fail rate on copyright. I'm going to get in contact with ReaderOfThePack to get ideas on fixing the issue. The class doesn't repeat till February, so I have some time to fine tune. RBMcIntosh (talk) 17:29, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that explanation, which has completely set my mind at rest about your intentions. I now see what you are saying as "The aim is for these students to write acceptable articles, but, to be realistic, unfortunately that won't always be so, and some will have to be deleted", rather than that you don't even intend their work to become articles, which is what I feared might be the case. Having myself spent several decades teaching, I am fully aware that with the best will in the world some students will not produce work of the standard one hoped for, but that doesn't prevent it being worthwhile to aim for them to do so. I have a very high opinion of "ReaderOfThePack", and your intention to seek help from her is a good step. I wish you the best of success. Thanks also Drmies for your helpful comments. JBW (talk) Formerly known as JamesBWatson 20:35, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
JBW, thank you--sometimes I get all warm and fuzzy about this collaborative thing. I appreciate the opportunity to work with professional volunteers of good faith. Drmies (talk) 20:42, 3 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
JBW Thanks. In the meantime, what should I do with the drafts? I put a hold on the project for now, so the kids won't be back to edit it (I occasionally get kids who do, but that's usually 1 in 100) Also, I'm seeing concerns about notability, do articles in "requested for creation" not get counted as notable automatically?
I don't know about the drafts, but no, those articles aren't automatically notable. They are requested, and with the request comes some information, usually, but that doesn't mean they're notable topics, no. Drmies (talk) 00:01, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance

[edit]

Hi, RBMcIntosh, sorry to see you've run into some trouble and apologies if you've felt like we've been trying to give you a hard time. We are actually heavily integrated with these kinds of mutually beneficial relationships with students and teachers working on Wikipedia as part of their classes, and they often run into these issues. Are you aware of the Education program? It's an entire project meant for assisting and facilitating users like you and your students. Best of luck! ~Swarm~ {sting} 01:46, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also, since you've probably seen my name on several of the copyright violation speedy deletion notices: Hi, I'm creffett. I'm pretty interested in intellectual property (I was a teaching assistant for a class on computer law for a lot of my time in college) and if you'd like to work some educational material about fair use and copyright law into your Wikipedia lessons (like Drmies mentioned), let me know and I'll see if I can find you some good resources. Even if not, I'd highly recommend the wonderful WMF Labs tool Earwig's Copyvio Detector - you can point it at your students' draft submissions and it can tell you if they copied the text and where it came from, and if you do find problematic articles, you're welcome to ping me or any of the other people in this discussion and we can help you deal with cleaning them up appropriately or deleting them. creffett (talk) 02:05, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gnar (rapper) moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Gnar (rapper), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published.
