Silent picture lobby art September 2015[edit]

These lobby posters I think are a tad better representative of their articles, a good deal of them lost films. I would like to see more of the silent articles with colorful lobby cards or if possible posters. The original silent patrons were drawn in by the flashy posters that promised. Newspaper adverts (even the smeared smudgy ones) are fine when on viable art can be had.

The first two are short films "Play Safe" (1927) and "A Canine Sherlock Holmes" (1912), I usually try to stay away from shorts but these two wer irresistibly cute. The two Lila Lee films had great newspaper adds with not too much smear so I included them.

I tried them up and down, but they take up the whole side and I won't be able to put other images in. I am thinking I might like horizontal, except the sizes are not uniform. Is there a way it can be fixed? There are lots more photos on Commons so you might find one you like better, but I tried to make sure each of the clubhouses were covered since the styles are so varied and it is about the architect. I haven't written the section yet about the Buena Vista House, but I'd like to have a picture of it. Are any of these useable?   • User:Skr15081997, is there a back of the Florence Marly photo uploaded at eBay? We'll need to see that to determine if the photo is PD or not. Some companies stamped the back of their photos. We also need to know when it was published. Had a look at the information for Tokyo File 212 and found that it was a US/Japanese film project. While we might be able to search to see if the US copyright was renewed, there may be a Japanese copyright as well. Skr15081997, the trouble with all of these photos is that there's nothing to show us who took the photo or when it was taken. Without that information, there's nothing to prove the photo is in the public domain. I found something last night. See what you think of this. Thanks for the amazing picture. The image used previously at Marly's page was a still from Tokyo File 212. The movie seems to be protected by Japanese copyright laws and I would soon request for the deletion of the image. I wouldn't use Discogs as a reliable source. Don't get me wrong, it is one of my favorite sites, but it is user-edited, like Wikipedia. It is also highly incomplete, so I don't think we can say with certainty he only issued one album for them. Also, I doubt he signed with Design records, a low-budget label. They probably used some old radio recordings. User:78.26 Not really sure what's up with it. Here's a listing of the 45's he made and you see that he was with MGM in 1956. The discogs seems to be the only place I can locate any information on Design Records (from that era); the news clipping says he was now with the label with a 45 Saturday's Kisses and Put Your Heart Next to Mine. User:78.26, I think everything that's available is in the article now. What's interesting to me is he seemed to have gotten so many lucky breaks that he was guaranteed to be a star. But it looks like the combination of the end of Milton Berle's show and being drafted into the army took a heavy toll on his career. Many thought being drafted would be the end of Elvis' career; it didn't happen to him but it does look like it played a role in snuffing out Applewhite's. Go ahead and nominate. Regarding Diabetes in dogs[edit]

I'm trying to figure out why you put a nobots template up. Cyberbot didn't do anything wrong with the article in question. I removed it and let Cyberbot run on it again, to repair citation formatting. As a note, archives need to use the archiveurl parameter, while retaining the original url in the url field. Cyberbot has done this for you, and the links will still link through to the archive. User:C678, after spending a couple of hours or more updating vet med article links, it wasn't something I wanted to do again for a while and it appeared that the bot had changed some of the refs I'd corrected. Some of the links which needed to be changed were the result of the website moving pages, so you get something like "not found" from the website. You needn't worry. Cyberbot doesn't undermine the work of others if they added their own archives. It simply fixes the formatting. The generated output will still take you to that archive. Let me view the trailer and if there's no notice, we can change the license on File:Burton The Robe 1953.png to PD . ::OK-saw the trailer at the link. There are no copyright notices. It's in color but the file listed above as being a screenshot is in black and white. As for this image from The Robe, the uploader states that "If the photograph contains relevant information such as a stamp or news article, marks, stains or anything written in it, the back will be revealed. We can't assume anything. The seller doesn't show the back of the photo--where we may find a copyright notice and or date stamp to tell us when it was published--because the PD licenses are based on the dates works were produced. I'm not saying the seller isn't telling the truth, but we have to be able to have a way to prove this if someone says "show me". There are times you can do this by reading and citing links, finding another copy of the image that shows both sides and has a date on it and so on, but we have to be able to provide proof of PD. File:Richard Burton - The Robe.jpg This is at Commons and it's the same photo from the same seller--it had no proof as mentioned above when it was uploaded in 2012.
Let's take a look at some photos of Sinatra from 20th Century Fox that show a back and date stamp- File:Frank Sinatra as Tony Rome.jpg File:4 for Texas Frank Sinatra.jpg File:Frank Sinatra Von Ryan's Express.jpg All have either an archived link to the complete photo and back or a copy of them showing no copyright marks and date when it was used (published) by media. Also, take some time when selecting photos from Commons to see who the uploader is. If that uploader has a history of deletions for copyright issues, there's a good chance the photo you want to use in the article may "disappear"--especially if the article is going through FAC. ;) We hope (talk) 13:33, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi We Hope, I am absolutely useless in tracking down copyright info, and know you are something of a star when it comes to it, so can I ask a favour on a couple of files Crisco has queried on the Walt Disney PR? He has left the comment:
  • File:Walt Disney Snow white 1937 trailer screenshot (13).jpg and all other screenshots of trailers (File:Cinderella 1950 Disney.jpg, : the rationale "Trailers for movies released before 1964 are in the Public Domain because they were never separately copyrighted" is incorrect. I've spotted several in the past that did have copyright notices, and Disney, from early on, was assiduous about enforcing his/its copyright. You'll need to watch each of the source trailers and see if there is a copyright notice.

A few minutes ago, I posted a new article, Joan Edwards (radio singer). I wonder if you could tell me what to do to resolve a small problem.

Wikipedia already had an article about Joan C. Edwards. The top of that page notes the existence of a redirect so that if one types "Joan Edwards" in the search box, he or she automatically reaches the Joan C. Edwards page.

Is there a way to delete the redirect page and instead have a disambiguation page so that if someone types "Joan Edwards" in the search box, links to both pages would appear? Rare hard to find period posters[edit]

Thanks. I love that Internet Archive and was aware of the trade pubs digitized over there. Other sources like the Kodascope catalog are helpful. The silent film book by Daniel Blum "Pictorial History of the Silent Film" is invaluable though I still would like to pick up an actual copy off Amazon or Alibris or something. It would be nice if other Blum books such as "Great Stars of the American Stage" were digitized as well. My version of the "Kiss of Hate" poster was from an ebay offering and is slightly murkier, as if someone was smoking a cigarette in front of it and the wafts of smoke floating across. Upcoming rebroadcast of episode of Johnny Mercer's Music Shop[edit]

Awhile back we exchanged messages about Jo Stafford's performances on Johnny Mercer's Music Shop. Therefore, seeing an episode of that show listed among a group of OTR programs to be rebroadcast on August 6 caught my attention.

It's part of a program with the umbrella title Those Were the Days. The station is in Illinois, but it has an Internet feed at www.wdcb.org. The hours are 1-5 p.m. (I assume that's Central Time, with the Illinois location.) If they follow the order listed, the Music Shop will be the third of nine OTR programs.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me in finding photos for the Monroe article? I know it's already a FA, but I think some sections could be illustrated with better images. In particular, I'd like to find a new still/publicity photo from Bus Stop (preferably one where she isn't smiling/wearing a dancer's costume to better demonstrate the difference to her earlier films), an image of her and Miller (maybe one from their wedding?), and an image from the set of Something's Got to Give. It would also be great to find images from her modeling career (e.g. a pin-up mag cover). I did some eBay searches and found the following, do you think they could be used?:

I'm skeptical about this one because what the seller is offering is a print of the lobby card. By 1948, most posters and lobby cards had copyright marks. Yes, because you're the one who has set the restrictions. I don't know where the images have been uploaded or whether they have CC licenses, but know that if someone has uploaded something to Flickr, for example, the uploader is able to change the licensing. I am the user referred to here, I am not very comfortable having these discussions on someone else's talk page, but yes I do realise that there is a bottom navbox, however I much prefer the side navbox to an infobox because it has a picture of the composer as well as links to all the other hundreds of articles about works of Handel. User:SchroCat, User:Gerda Arendt, User:Smeat75 Going on record on my talk page to say that I have always believed to include or exclude an infobox is up to the main editors of an article. I don't believe someone should be going around removing them-and I have yet to see a patrol removing infoboxes from articles. Infoboxes have been removed when articles have undergone major changes and those removals were by the main editor(s) of the respective article; there's no group of editors traveling WP in search of infoboxes to remove from articles. However, I HAVE seen people either adding infoboxes without checking to see what the consensus is or pro-infobox arguments suddenly break out at articles; some of the articles have had the infobox question applied multiple times.

What I am saying is that both sides of the philosophy could and should be using their time at WP in a better manner. There are close to two million stubs in this encyclopedia. Many consist of a sentence, perhaps two of real information about the subject and many times, an infobox. Someone looking for more information does not come to WP to see the infoboxes and come away impressed with all of the infoboxes they've seen here. Expanding these articles with reliable information, and yes, creating new articles with reliable information is the way to serve "the reader"-give them what they want-real information-not infoboxes. I found an image in the January 1941 issue of Radio and Television Mirror that I can use in a Wikipedia article that I am about to publish. I feared that I had done something wrong, because at the end of the process of submitting the file to Wikimedia, an error message appeared. However, when I thought I would have to try the upload again, I found that the file was already in place on Wikimedia. You can see its page here. Grace's Little Belmont[edit]

Hi, I just created this article. I wonder if you could help me with a historical question. I found a few newspaper articles that mentioned an Alice Dixon marrying Herndon Daniels, a "sportsman" who was arrested for tax evasion, in 1939; he was associated with the Little Belmont Bar in Atlantic City (see here). The Atlantic City Free Public Library page says that Hernan Daniels married Grace after World War II and they were the owners of the bar since the mid-1930s. Could it be that Hernan was released from jail and remarried after WWII, or that the first couple has nothing to do with the second? Thanks for any light you can shed on this question. A question about categories related to radio[edit]

As I was adding categories to the Hollace Shaw article, I wondered about something. Why are there no music-related categories for individuals in old-time radio? "American radio ..." categories include actors, actresses, directors, executives, etc. but no singers, orchestra leaders, musicians or anything like that. Perhaps I'm missing something. Question about size of photo in infobox[edit]

I have posted a new article, Joyce Jordan, M.D., and I'm curious about why the image in the infobox is so small. Before I found the group photo, I had an image of Elspeth Eric in the box, and it was much smaller than the same image appears in the infobox in the Elspeth Eric article. Thanks for the suggestion about adding the "250px" coding. I didn't know that could be done in an infobox. I used it, and the image looks much better.

The page that you provided the link to is the one from which I got the picture to upload to Wikimedia Commons. That's one reason I was surprised that the reproduction in the Joyce Jordan, M.D. infobox was so small. I knew that the original image was large when I uploaded it to WC.
