What do you mean by "delete this one"? Rin tin tin 1996 (talk) 23:24, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since you really only got awarded one ;p, I'd ask you only keep the userpage one. No worry over copying, so no smack necessary. ;D I've had the same issue come up before, so I should make clear "I award" is intended as a "wait to get it"... Oh, okay. I have a subpage I made for awards, so is it all right if I take the user page one and put it there. (I already deleted the other one. Rin tin tin 1996 (talk) 23:40, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Elections

[edit]

Hi!

In response to your note on the election page, you can of course withdraw any time you like :) The normal route is to just remove the voting section and the tally, with an edit summary saying you're withdrawing. However, before you do that, you may like instead consider the alternative, which is taking a more active part in the process, to show people what you're made of. With ten days to go before voting concludes, that may well be enough time to get some of the elusive extra votes. You can particpate more by reviewing and improving your candidate statement and your responses to questions (people do read them!); putting good questions to the other candidates; and making thoughtful/insightful comments when you vote. While you may not be elected this time, this experience will stand you in good stead at the next elections (in October). The project needs regular invigoration with injections of new blood and everyone was a newcomer once!  Roger Davies talk 13:08, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have decided to withdraw from the election. I'm sorry to see that you have decided to withdraw, but I encourage you to remain active in the project and, if you are willing, to try again for a position. I have full faith and confidence that you can bring much to the project both as a contributor and as a coordinator. Sincerely, TomStar81 (Talk) 01:31, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinator elections have opened!

Sorry I haven't responded sooner, but I just got back from vacation. I'm afraid I could only find one source you didn't list in the article: D-M commander promoted to brigadier general. There might be information on the rescue incident (I haven't checked), especially around the time of the incident, but I don't have the time to look for it just now. I hope that helps. Sino-Japanese war

[edit]

Hi,

just saw that you tried to add the US as combatant in Second Sino-Japanese War. I'd agree on that, and I think the Soviet union also deserves credit, but last time I tried that I found myself arguing on the talk page with some (apparently) Chinese nationalist users. Actually, I think that listing the US and USSR under combatants does not diminish the fact that the ROC did 85% of the job in mainland China, no one is denying this. Still, I think they should be listed and I'd say the Wang Jingwei regime, Manchukuo and Mengjiang may also deserve a mention on the other side. Other users argued that collaborators were "insignificant", but the Wang Jingwei regime had a force of about 600 000 men, that's hardly insignificant. My other argument was that the Communist Party of China should be listed as a different belligerent than the ROC, since the second united front was in name only, at least after 1941. Would you have an opinion on that ? I had been adressing some of these issues here, and I thought that you might be interested in sharing your thoughts. Cheers, Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 18:35, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An edited infobox with all the combatants would look like this. Compare the differences, it's actually quite simple to modify. You should discuss the issue of including all the combatants on the article's talk page AND on the military project talk page, as the article is edited by some opinionated Chinese editors, and the discussion might hit a brick wall. Cheers, Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 08:45, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, and I started a discussion on the talk page. Rin tin tin 1996 (talk) 20:02, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found the discussion (It's short) that eliminated them from the userbox [[1]]
Yep, not much of a discussion, actually. The problem is that not many users seem to actually care about these subjects, outside Chinese ones, who may sometimes contribute under a particular flag. Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 09:35, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I saw, that's cool. I think you'd better look if your edits are not undone by the usual Chinese nationalists (not that I want to badmouth anyone, but that's the impression it gives me). I just undid an edit which had canceled your work, which was predictable. If necessary, argue about it on the talk page and on the military project page (and invite users to go discuss on the project otherwise you might be ganged upon by a group of users on the Second Sino-japanese war talk page). cheers Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 20:04, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Secret pages

[edit]

I notice you have a 'secret page'.

Here is my philosophy on 'secret pages'.

They're a waste of time and effort. I wasn't even looking for it - I was simply going through the list of "new pages created in userspace in the past 30 days".

There are so many ways to quickly see what pages exist in someone's userspace that to think that there can ever truly be a 'hidden page' is to deceive oneself.

To repeat: 'secret pages' are a waste of time and effort. Wikipedia is supposed to be analogous to a library, not a playground; your work on the Paul Johnston proto-article shows that you're capable of better.

Remember, to tag your own userpages for deletion, just add {{db-u1}}. DS (talk) 23:42, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage design

[edit]

Hi there. You indicated that you wanted your userpage to be redesigned. Do you still want it done? I would be happy to do so, but I charge a fee for my services:

  • 25 constructive mainspace edits. This means adding verifiably sourced content, not just spelling fixes, vandal reverts, that sort of thing.

or

  • 15 new pages patrolled. See here for quick instructions on how to get started. The most important thing is to start at the back of the log, with the oldest pages.

or

If you would like me to design a userpage for you, please do one of the above, and leave a message on my talkpage with the relevant diffs (or a link to your patrol log), as well as any notes about colours or whatnot. → ROUX  23:48, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bacon Challenge 2011 coming to a close

[edit]

Dear ever-so-valiant Bacon Challenge 2011 participant:

Almost a year ago, the Bacon Challenge 2011 kicked off for the third year in a row with the annual mission of expanding and bettering Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. We are almost at the end of this year's Bacon Challenge, which ends on March 1st. I am pleased to say that, during this time period, Bacon Challenge participants have done a great job. Ten new pages have been created. Two articles have been granted the status of being good articles. Over one hundred reliable sources have been placed into articles, and over 7,500 words have been added. Six articles have been featured on Wikipedia's main page under the "Did you know..." section. These are all excellent results.

The Bacon WikiCup has also been exciting to watch. Contributors have been racking up more and more points as the deadline approaches. As I post this message, Devon Worm That Turned is in the lead, with Belgium Cirt in second, and United Kingdom Acather96 in third. Belgium Cirt currently has created the most new pages, while Devon Worm That Turned has done the most work in expanding articles and achieving DYKs. United Kingdom Acather96 has done the most work with image uploads. Remember, while the Bacon Challenge is ending in just a few days, it's not too late to make any last-minute contributions to get a few more Bacon WikiCup points. Everyone who contributes at least something will earn a virtual commemorative medal, so if you haven't contributed anything bacon-related to Wikipedia, now's your chance. Contributions can be submitted up until the end of March 7th, but only for contributions that were done before the beginning of March. The extra week is provided for participants to report any last-minute contributions, and to allow for any contributions that require a timely process (such as a good article or DYK nomination) to go through. At the end of the event, scores for the Bacon WikiCup will be completed and re-checked, and prizes will be distributed. Thanks and good luck! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:12, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to the Bacon Challenge 2012

[edit]

I see that you've been away for several months, but if you do happen to come back and are interested...

Hello! You have been invited to take part in the Bacon Challenge 2012. In case you don't know or need a refresher, the Bacon Challenge is an annual celebration of bacon on Wikipedia in which editors come together to help create, expand, and improve Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. The event lasts all the way through National Pig Day 2012, giving participants plenty of time to work at their pleasure. In addition to the Bacon Challenge is the Bacon WikiCup 2012, a side event to the Challenge in which all bacon-related contributions done by those participating in the Challenge are submitted and scored by the scorekeeper (me) based on the scoring chart. At the end of the Challenge, the user with the most points in the Bacon WikiCup will win a shiny trophy for their userpage. In addition, the users who score the highest in specific categories (not yet finalized, but the categories include most image uploads, most article creations, most DYK submissions, and more) will win barnstars. Finally, all participants will receive a medal. While the awards are nice, in the end, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy what we're all here for, which is improving Wikipedia.

If you decide to participate, great! You may add your name to the participants list at the main page of the Bacon Challenge 2012, and pick up the userbox for your userpage if you desire. Signing up for the Challenge will also automatically enter you into the Bacon WikiCup. If you don't wish to participate, that's fine too - maybe next year! In the meantime, if you know anyone who might also be interested in participating, feel free to invite them! The Challenge is open to anyone and accepts participants at any time, so feel free to let anyone who might be interested know.

Note that I, the scorekeeper of the Bacon WikiCup, will be on vacation starting on the 18th of June all the way up until the 5th of July. I will have limited access to the internet, so I may or may not be able to score users' contributions during this time. Sorry for any delay in scoring (but since the Challenge lasts for more than half a year, there's no rush, right? (= ).

I'm looking forward to another fun, successful year. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:46, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games

[edit]

Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success. Thank you. --LauraHale (talk) 04:23, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to the African Destubathon

[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

[edit]

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
