Advice[edit]

I'm one of the editors here who work most of scientific biographies. The work you are doing on Indian female scientists is very important, and I can help you do it as effectively as possible.

The first question is notability: The relevant notability criterion is WP:PROF, which basically requires evidence that the individual is an authority in their field. For scientists, this is normally shown by citation figures, which are most easily obtained from Google Scholar. Google Scholar is biased very strongly towards the major Western European and US journals, and Indian scientist who publish primarily in Indian journals are at a strong disadvantage. The exact number of citations required depends on the field--in the biomedical sciences there should probably be a few papers with over 100 citations each; in other fields, lower is OK, but it's rare we accept an article without some over 30. Academic rank is not the determining factor, but its relatively uncommon for us to accept someone who is not a full professor at a university known as a major research university. Only a very few universities in India are considered in that class. An alternative to citations is awards, but they must be at a national level, not a state level or limited to within a single university, or awards given when only a student. Another possibility is major academic administrators: someone who is the chief executive of a college or university qualifies--in India, this will usually be the vice-chancellor. (not just the present one--anyone who was notable in the past remains always notable)

As for contents, this should include a brief biography, giving the place of birth and the colleges attended, with dates of the degrees, and the successive positions since then. It should include any awards, and memberships in major scientific scientific societies at the national level. In should specify the subjects worked on and list the few most important publications. And it should give any major public service positions.

The sourcing for the routine parts of this can come from the person';s own web site at their university--which should always be given. The sourcing for anything else must come from references providing substantial coverage from third-party independent reliable sources, not press releases or mere announcements.

I've been trying to increase our coverage of academics for many years now, and I will defend if necessary any article which I think has a reasonable chance. I will improve what I can, but that's much harder. I also want to try to increase our coverage on not-Western people and culture, but that's really difficult for me, because I find it almost impossible to get what WP considers to be good sources.

Most or all of the people you are writing on can & should have articles, but the ones you have been writing are somewhat sketchy. My suggestion would be that you improve the articles you;ve already entered, before starting any new ones.

I can help you not just in defending, but in advising whether someone will be a feasible subject. If you ever want help or advice, ask me on my talk page, not here, please, the only place I am likely to see it. DGG ( talk ) 02:36, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
