Icons & Portals[edit]

Hey there, Go for it! The debate on the main page design has gotten me interested in icons, especially in relation to portals and categories. It's clear icons won't be on the main page but they are already present on the portals and categories pages. I have no problem with you applying that symbol to philosophy. Yin & Yang is a cool symbol, and highly philosophical. By the way... would you like to have some fun? Concerning icons on the Main Page redesign: icons could be used in the header if there wasn't a wrapping problem. If you could find a way to turn off the wrap for specific page elements, then that could pave the way for the use of icons in the portal matrix. Hey again. Thanks for the notes. I wasn't sure which portal matrix you were refering to? I been messing about a bit with various portals incarnations. I've been doing it in my sandbox as I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be adopted.

Anyway here are some links into commons where I got the icons.

My thinking was that because they were portal pages the jigsaw piece made sense (jigsaw being the portal icon already) - especially as these individual icons get created already for stubs and templates - there is a, 2 birds one stone, thing going on there. We can keep adding portal icons for as long as we keep adding portals - there would be a consistant feel by using the jigsaw piece. There may be better ways of doing this mind you...

Thanks for pointing out the alternative main pages, having looked at them, Misty Breeze would be my absolute personal favorite by a long shot. I had a play with it in my own area to get my head around transclusions etc and came up with a couple of portal sections. One using jigsaw pieces - and another that didn't. I've been looking at related issues and have also seen a few people commenting on the whole Categories & Portals hierarchies and how these need restructured a fair bit (eg User:Vir). I would agree and my opinion is that having individual portals on the main page at the minute is a bit premature before an overall restructure happens... Big job though... A few thoughts I had about the problem:

Many people will oppose icons on the main page for various reasons. If that reason is performance - surely some techs can set up caching so that the icons have less of a hit on the servers?
We should ensure that when we talk about Categories we are very specifc about the difference between a normal idea of a category and those within wikipedia. I had originally thought that the main page should have overall headings (like categories and portals browse at the minute - however I'm not sure if we should refer to these as Categories. I think there is a need to separate 'Subject Heading' from Categories - as this has a very specific meaning within the wiki.
The overall headings could be represented by the Nuvola icons - with portals being represented by the jigsaw icons - categories I think could do without icons - this would make more sense as textual (with decent formatting mind you).
I do think it's confusing to have the same "look and feel" on both sets of pages currently though. Do you know what the current plans are regarding all that?

A completely different approach would be where a selection of portals is chosen each week and added via template to a header (not neccessarily just the featured one though), the options then would be:

Show off the best portals
Show featured portals
Encourage people to work on new portals
Encourage widescale thinking about categories and meta information. (I came across something about root pages but was too busy playing in my sandbox at the time...)

I am keen to get involved in the usability side but don't know where to start here? I have experience in RL. Could you point me at an up to date page where helpers are welcome? Regards SeanMack 14:00, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is RL?

The jigsaw piece makes it hard to see what the picture is. I still can't tell what some of those are.

By the way, there are already icons on the Main Page. Check out the Wikipedia Sister projects. No one complains about those.

The problem with the word "categories" is that Wikipedia has hijacked the word for its own context, so if you want to use the generic english context, "subject categories" is less ambiguous.

The biggest objection to icons on the main page at the moment is the "ugly wrap" problem. That is, the icon is treated by the program as a word and not a bullet, so when you increase text size, wrapping is activated and the icon winds up on one line and the link on the next. If you can find a way to turn off wrapping for an element rather than the whole page, this would solve the problem. I don't know how to do it.

There aren't enough Nuvola icons to cover all the portals.

Concerning plans, Wikipedia is very chaotic and decentralized. Very ad hoc. Also, it is nearly impossible to make a standard design stick across pages because of the "anyone can edit" rule.

You mentioned 2 sets of pages, and I didn't know what you were referring to. One user wanted to make the Help page and Community Portal match the Main Page, but on retrospect I think they should have their own identity. If you were referring to the Main Page alternates, it doesn't matter, because that's for users to pick the design they want, and some will want the Main Page with slightly different features, like icons. Confusion isn't a big problem here, because those pages are all fully operational and the links lead to the same places anyways.

Yes, I have some suggestions on where you can chip in:

The column version of picture of the day (which is used on most of the Main Page alternates) needs to be kept stocked up in advance. Currently there is only one person doing this (me), but it's good if more than one person is keeping an eye on it. The link to the archive/cache is on the Main Page alternates talk page. Basically you go to the pic of the day archive, copy each day's entry over to our corresponding pages, and strip out the chart markup code (see a previous pic for an example).
The Wikipedia:WikiProject Help is about to undertake a redesign of the Wikipedia namespace and the help system (most of the help system is in the Wikipedia namespace). The first step is to create a site map of what's already there, to see what we have to work with. If you want to become an expert on everything Wikipedia, this would be the place to do it. We got off to a false start, because the lists put up for us to work with are incomplete, with key pages missing. So we've got to go back to the database dump and start over.

Hi Sean, I see you have fixed the description of the second Falkirk Wheel image. I do not know if you saw what it had been changed to before I atempted to change it back. After changing it I checked some references and thought about it again. So the space below the axle of the wheel is like a dry dock, is it not? Otherwise there would be evidence of water dripping down onto the axle and the boats below.. Thanks for the contributions you have made, now there is lots more I can say.. Hi Sean. Thanks for the message. I'll look at the Good Article link you gave me and make an assessment based on the guidelines there. The principle reason I would object is that the article currently carries many disputes and is constantly being reverted and having POV added and removed. Considering the subject, it would probably be hard to avoid this. But, bearing this in mind, I'm actually trying to create my own complete version of the article which I hope to submit in a week or two. Streamlining GA/FA/1.0 etc[edit]

Hi Sean, Thanks for your posting on my talk page. I do think it would be wonderful if we could get all of the different projects like WP:1.0, WP:GA, WP:AA, WP:FAC and so on all to work together more smoothly - I wish sometimes we could get everyone together in one (large!) room for a day and agree on some common standards and procedures. However it sounds like you have some specific ideas in mind, I presume relating to the peer review aspect. Can you explain your ideas in more detail? I think that some form of peer review is needed for GA, but it should be quicker and simpler than for FA. Regarding CS gas, I hope it's good, I printed off a copy for one of my students today - he's going to do a poster about CS gas! I'll try to give it a closer look over the next few days. I did a little bit of work on CS gas and the related malononitrile, but I'd like to come back to that. I have a conference to get ready for in Atlanta that will keep me tied up, though not totally away from Wikipedia - my talk on Sunday morning is on chemical information - "Wikipedia, Social Revolution or Information Disaster". When I can catch up on sleep I will look again at CS gas.

As for collaborating on things, I see that as something we could do over the next few months, not necessarily just this weekend - so don't apologise! Please take a look at the new-style WP:1.0 page, and see how what we're doing there fits in with other projects like GA. I get the feeling that at least some people see the WP:1.0 project as an umbrella for a variety of "meta-projects" - if that ends up being another aspect of the project then that's fine by me, as I think such an umbrella is a good thing. (Note, we've had three new proposed sub-projects start in the last fortnight!). At least WP1.0 can provide a focus for many projects, and a justification, e.g. for GA and for Stable Versions. Asalouyeh[edit]

Thanks - It definitley needs references. Most of this info comes from my own visits to Asalouyeh, so it's hard for me to point to something concrete. How does Wikipedia handle that, is that a valid reference?

The other issue is that most of the online material for Asalouyeh is in Farsi (the language of Iran), so that's not much help either.

I was going to do precisely the same thing as you with the colours (putting light blue in) and was about to split up art, architecture etc in the same way! I think it looks nice. I have had a go at splitting up the war and military section and am quite pleased with the results (User:TheGrappler/Good3), so if you want to borrow from that, feel free! I think we're ready to roll :) I couldn't reproduce that bug you were having but it did happen to me on some other sections and it vanished as mysteriously as it came, sometimes just by refreshing the cache, if I recall correctly. I like your new article divider by the way! It think it'd be an idea to start proposing it now - would be interesting to see if anybody else experiences that bug. The second sentence of the section you pointed me to states that, in addition to an inline external link, "A full citation ought then be given in the References section". Good articles[edit]

Nobody has reverted the redesigned good articles page - haven't even seen talk page moans, so I'll take that as a success, well done! :) Looks great in my opinion. I see we've both got into POPUP and geographical coordinates (I'm doing work on Norwegian lakes at the mo, and the options at the end for selecting country and scale are well worth playing around with). I also noticed you've been very busy nominating articles for GA status! I suspect their is a rich seam to mine in Category:Mathematicians, since there are some excellent maths biography sites online which mean that many mathematician bios are actually referenced (and the older ones will have PD pictures available to nab, too). I've designed a {{WikiProjectGATasks}} (on display at Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles that lists open tasks for the GA project. I wondered if you thought it might be useful? I can't quite figure if it should go somewhere else too - I guess the talk page for WP:GA might be an appropriate place. TheGrappler 03:34, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks; the new template needs fairly frequent updating to be meaningful, but it about 5 GA "regulars" used it then it would probably be kept up to date well enough. WP:CSB's template (it's based on that) gets updated painfully slowly, but mainly because even WP:CSB, probably Wikipedia's worthiest project, can't sort out neglected articles at the rate it would like to. Some synergy with the reference and fact-checking project would be cool, even if it was only to ask them to pass on any well-referenced non-FAs onto the noms page. I can see grutness's point - the reason, I guess, is "human biology" links the two fields of medicine and biology far too closely. It is nice to see people saying good things about the GA page redesign, isn't it? :D And it looks like there may be a cure for "show all", which would be fantastic. Stuff[edit]

My template-god, when I need to summon one, has been the incredibly helpful User:Locke Cole but I don't know if what you're looking for is quite in his ballpark.

I've been wondering about the multiple sub-sections on the good articles list, and have tried experimenting to get a "cleaner" feel, more like in the de: list. User:TheGrappler/Good3 contains my latest experiment - I did it as an experiment and was surprised by how much I like it. It looks less messy when there isn't a queue of "edit" buttons, and some of the big sections e.g. geography and history come out looking much more compact. Any thoughts? Interesting thoughts! I will definitely implement the "hidden" subtitles on the main page, that's a big improvement! Yes, German wikipedia's page is lovely, and you're right about the borders - it would look much nicer (especially against a blue background), but I don't know how to do it unfortunately. The real thing that attracted me to the compact format was the fact that some sections, like history, were now taking up more than my screen could show. All the repeated "edit" buttons can look a bit ugly, but I am not sure that your version looks sufficiently better on-screen to justify removing them given that they do have some utility. The grin on the beast was unintentional, due to trying to draw it based on the photos of the skull fossil and model, but in consolation crocs do have a bit of a grin. Sorry you feel so offended. All am doing is marking that it needs references - something that a lot of other people also do. It's not meant to be a criticism from on high. I actually have entered references for many articles recently. Also most articles I add the unreferenced template to, I add a link to an article that describes how to use the new-ish referencing method. This is the sort of thing that many people are considering as a way forward to improve the verifiability within Wikipedia. I can assure you I have none of the emotive attitudes that you ascribe to me. Here are just the most recent articles that I have added references to recently:

There are many others I have added the same message as the message on karst. It takes time to look up reliable references and add them to articles - I can only do so many and think it's not a harsh thing to add a references section to an article as a starting point for those editors who aren't necessarily aware of the importance of these things. This is particularly true of Wikipedia:Good Articles and Wikipedia:Featured Articles, which is where my edit comment comes from. If anything it is an encouragement that this is a decent article but will need referencing, as opposed to me criticising anyone. I am more than happy to take your advice on changing my edit summary to something that you would find more acceptable, so do let me know. I also do think it is useful for the project to add these reference sections where they don't yet exist, so if you can help me use wording that won't upset others than would be good. I started this thread with you and then completely forgot about it... Sorry about that. Anyway, I'm wondering if you've misunderstood the licensing you've applied. By licensing this as GFDL, it means I can take it and make prints with it and sell them commercially without the permission of the artist, as long as I include the text of the GFDL with the sale. Is the artist OK with other people making money off her work? If not, then the GFDL is not appropriate and this can only be included under our fair use policy, in which case it would probably have to be deleted (unless the Sheila McLean article specifically discussed this painting). Hi - I gather you're using some sort of browser assist (AWB perhaps?) to make spelling corrections. I noticed in this edit whatever tool you're using apparently made some white space changes (looks like it deleted spaces at the end of lines in this case). - My thought was that the list is bound to be incomplete, and I wondered who might actually find it useful. If anyone can think of a context in which an incomplete list of cities along the Great Lakes could be helpful, I have *no* problem keeping it, but the list seemed to invite problems, and without a reason to keep it, I would rather see it dropped. I suppose someone might look up the Great Lakes and want to find an example of a city along one of them to do further research. If this is a scenario that you think might happen at all, as you say, Wikipedia is not paper. I just thought this list would be either wrong or the subject of a great deal of editing time that could be spent on more useful topics. My first instinct was to spend a lot of time correcting the list, then I realized that didn't seem like a good use of my time, but I didn't want incorrect or incomplete information floating out there. A new drive has been started requesting that all members review at least one article (or more, if you wish!) within the next two weeks at GAC to help in removing the large backlog. May I have your attention regarding images please[edit]

Thank you for uploading images/media such as Image:Timber DonnellyMills2005 SeanMcClean.jpg to Wikipedia! There is however another Wikimedia foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading media there instead. That way, all the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Plant ID[edit]

Hi, your best guess of Grevillea wilsonii concurs with my best guess when I was looking at it earlier on. I'm no expert on orchids (or anything else for that matter) but your ID of Elythranthera brunosis looks pretty spot on to me.

In terms of ID, I'm happy to have a go, and you can place them on my talk page, where as you said, others can chip in too. It's good to have at least 2 different pictures for an ID exercise. The other thing is to give as exact a location as you can eg "Bloggs Nature Reserve, Bloggsville", or note them as cultivated if growing in a garden (note these on the image description page).
