A technical question regarding CSD[edit]

Hi, Skier Dude

I have a technical question. In multiple instances now, I have nominated fair-use files belong to recently-deleted articles for speedy-deletion per G8. But you always reject my proposal BUT tag it for ORFUD. In the mean time, in two other cases to which two other admins attended, they deleted the file straight away.

But which decision is correct? I mean... in case I became an admin in the future... wouldn't it be the right thing to delete such files straight away? I mean won't WP:SNOW apply here?

Fleet Command (talk) 08:28, 12 August 2010 (UTC) Er... Skier Dude? Just received your {{talkback}} notice but were is your reply? Fleet Command (talk) 22:31, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If an admin is willing to G8 it, I guess that's their prerogative; however, I've been burned in the past on that and tend to give the uploader the benefit of the doubt and let him have the extra time to see if the image may be used. There's some that are clearly spam-a-licious (repeat offenders), that may be why others have recognized them and deleted them. There was a discussion a while back to include anything that was uploaded related to a deleted article could be included under G8 or G6, but the general consensus (if I remember correctly) was that related stuff needed to be nominated independently or included in the original nomination. I'd include images in that as well... but there may have been some updates while I was offline in the last few months, would be interested to see if the discussion had progressed. Skier Dude (talk 22:32, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks man. You're caution is understandable. I won't put them up for G8 anymore. See you around. Fleet Command (talk) 22:42, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help! I would like to post an article about an organization[edit]

Hi Skier Dude,

I work for an organization, American Appraisal. I would like to post this article but it seems that it has been deleted some time ago because there is a conflict of interest. The article is informative. This is not used for advertising purposes. How can I publish this article without it getting deleted?

Thanks so much! AA53202 (talk) 23:10, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to point out...[edit]

The sandbox is a place which is not controlled by the laws of wikipedia. I understand why you took the images off, but you must understand that a sandbox is a reasonable place for non-free images to be tested. --The Doomsday Machine! (talk) 00:33, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, wiki laws DO state that non-free images are to be used solely in the article space. There's a grace period given for in-process, but once the image is tagged as unused, it will be removed from the non-article space. Tested, yes - permanent, no. The use that you've got in User:DrStrangelove64/Sandbox/Success is clearly out of policy and your re-placement of the images has been reverted. Skier Dude (talk 00:40, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:Non-free content -several sections discuss the use of non-free images. Skier Dude (talk 00:43, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

TraxWiki.gif deletion[edit]

SkierDude, You deleted a picture (TraxWiki.gif) I put up on Trax(game). It was a low res picture I took myself. Did I not fill something out right? RexJacobus (talk) 22:59, 16 August 2010 (UTC)RexJ[reply]

Hi, thanks for your response. You said I needed a source and a copyright license. I recently uploaded an image of Palago and I was told if I took the pic of the game myself and it was low res that the source issue was covered. I was going to try to put GNU FDL as the copyright license (because that is what I was told to do with the palago pic) but I didn't see how I was supposed to associate the two. To be honest, I find the uploading of images counter-intuitive, I thank you for any help you can give me. RexJacobus (talk) 21:35, 18 August 2010 (UTC)RexJacobus[reply]

Hi Skier Dude,

thank you for your many unselfish contributions to Wikipedia.

I understand the technicalities and amateur efforts you must deal with, including mine. This is my latest mistake: File:Anderson-Store.jpg at Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. It appears I didn't meet the Wiki standards for copyrighting a photo I took myself. Considering my attempt to provide information, such as the photo, to the public, it would be a shame to delete an important piece of visual history because of a Wiki technicality. Again, I took the photo; I'm the author of the photo, as is indicated. It appears to be referenced and identified that way for all to observe.

Honestly, some of the Wiki technicalities are hieroglyphics to me; I'm not very smart. One Wiki reference link leads to another, to another, to another and to another about even the simplest technicality. It's sort of overkill. I'll bet many worthy contributors simply avoid Wiki because of the micro-focused near-Rube Goldberg aspect of trying to contribute. You of course didn't design Wiki that way, and do a tremendous job as a proofreader, from what I see.

Still, it seems it's important to remember that readers of Wiki don't expect it to be an absolute, perfect, flawless reference source. Even legal briefs have flaws and court cases are decided based on these flaws. But Wiki is not a courtroom, it's a magnificent reading room, a library, a compendium that has no equal. I simply hope that the technical requirements constructed by Wiki engineers and other technical types don't defeat the greater purpose of Wiki, which I presume is to be a masterful general reference for the entire world. Trying to be more will lead to endlessness and likely frustration for all.

No harm is intended from my comments.

Best regards, Michael L. Ritter P.S. If you can help me meet your criteria, please stay in touch. 76.102.56.132 (talk) 02:08, 17 August 2010 (UTC) Michael L. Ritter 02:17, 17 August 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mritter4u (talkcontribs)

Your bot overlaps with a different bot that I just blocked[edit]

I uploaded my screencapture of a disputed webpage for use in an ongoing discussion at ANI. Almost at once, DASHbot tagged it for deletion as a non-free image. When I explained the circumstances, which are also clearly explained in the image description, the owner of DASHbot explained to me how to block his robot from the page. Now your bot has arrived, also unable to read my explanation on the image description, on essentially the same task. I would like your bot also to leave my image alone, but apparently blocking it is limited to admins. I suggest you coordinate with DASHbot and/or teach your bot to accept the exclude-DASHbot message. Thank you. betsythedevine (talk) 13:02, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned media uploaded by User:Dchambers101[edit]

Most (all?) of these media became orphaned because a new user (User:Amasmith) has uploaded new versions of these files under a new name and then changed this in the respective articles. By the Way.[edit]

By the Way, how do you label clip art for licensing? The Doomsday Machine! (Blastoff!) 20:38, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All depends on the source... if you created it yourself, would be {{pd-self}}. If it's copied from a web-site, you'll have to determine the license from the site (most do have some restriction). If it's from a commercial pack, it's probably totally (c) and not usable here. Skier Dude (talk 23:39, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Editor review/urbaneyeorg?[edit]

I saw you deleted Wikipedia:Editor review/urbaneyeorg under G6, thats kind of confusing considering there was/is an active MFD for that article at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Editor review/urbaneyeorg. In addition I removed a CSD-G11 tag earlier in the day, so how could the page even be speedily deleted if a CSD was already declined earlier and the page moved to an alternate deletion process, MFD. Could you please clarify what happened? Thanks -Marcusmax(speak) 02:08, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The user clearly didn't understand the request for Editor review - and wished for the "article" to be reviewed, not himself. G6 does cover for "This also includes pages unambiguously created in error and/or in the incorrect namespace." G11 clearly didn't apply to this page - but other other CSD's may apply - I agree with User:TenPoundHammer that G6 applies to this page. Skier Dude (talk 02:22, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thats good enough for me plus the language of G6 was confusing me a bit. I'll go ahead and do a non admin closure of the MFD. -Marcusmax(speak) 02:24, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Persian engineers[edit]

I saw you tagged Category:Persian engineers for speedy deletion as empty. I have the feeling it was emptied by changing the category from Category:Persian engineers to Category:Iranian engineers in a few cases. If this were the case, and if those engineers were from before the establishment of presentday Iran, which after all comes after Persia, then such would be incorrect. If you have any ways of checking this, I'd recommend to do so. Debresser (talk) 14:21, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The only way that I can think of is to look at the individual articles currently tagged in Category:Iranian engineers (28 pages) and see which ones had been changed. As I'm not knowledgeable on the issue, I'd leave that to someone who is. Skier Dude (talk 03:26, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing that an article in the Vancouver Sun and several blog posts wouldn't be enough?Udeezy (talk) 04:52, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Meh, OK... One other thing, if you're going back and forth with someone about something, like we just did, is it standard to go to their talk page and make the comments, like we did, or use one person's page? I'm new... Udeezy (talk) 04:54, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, time for bed! Thanks!Udeezy (talk) 05:02, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images for deletion[edit]

Please note that when an image is orphaned because of vandalism as was the case in the Rockefeller Foundation article, it is probably better to revert the vandalism than tag the file for deletion. |► ϋrбanяeneωaℓTALK ◄| 04:09, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Florida public records copyright free issue from last year resolved[edit]

Hi there -- I would like to revisit an issue from last November regarding Possibly unfree File:Kafi Benz - 83d40m - ccc newsletter 2004.JPG -- you told me at the time that you could reinstate the use of the image if it were resolved in my favor. Well a similar issue arose and the resolution has been decided in my favor. I even have discovered a template that covers this issue. A great deal of discussion has yielded this at [6] under Possible derivative uploads by User:83d40m -- I know it has been some time, but recalled your statement to me. Can you tell me what I must do now to have that deleted image put back into active status? ----83d40m (talk) 09:45, 29 August 2010 (UTC) When I came back I saw that you are away. Here is the proper template for the deleted file, Template:PD-FLGov Please let me know how we would go about restoring the image. ----83d40m (talk) 15:31, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would list the image (and any others involved) at Wikipedia:Deletion review. That way it goes through the process & there will be a record of the discussion (rather than one admin restoring it unilaterally) - especially given the nature of the discussion mentioned above. I don;t foresee any problems once there's concensus. Skier Dude (talk 21:07, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks -- I will follow that procedure. ----83d40m (talk) 23:32, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
