WP:Hornbook -- a new law-related task force for the J.D. curriculum[edit]

Hi Slaporte,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

Wikisource : Supreme Court Project[edit]

Thank you for the new ideas and help on the Supreme Court project over at WS, a daunting task. User George Orwell mentioned in the discussion thread you had a bot that would upload the US Reports of all the cases. I am just wondering how it is going with that? It would save a ton of manual labor. Also would we have to individually add the cases to the front of the WS Supreme Court page? Also I feel that it is important to cross-link the cases not just the volumes in the US Reports. Like if Roe v. Wade cites an earlier case (making this up) plessy v. ferguson we cite Plessy v Ferguson as Plessy v Ferguson etc not just the US Reports volume that you would find it in. Bring: Your laptop and charger (we'll have some extra computers available), your questions, and your friends!

What to expect: A fun, laid-back environment with food, drink, a great mix of people, and a wealth of knowledge and resources.

Public transport: BART to Montgomery station and walk 1 block down New Montgomery St.

Reminder: The St. Patricks Day parade will be starting at 11:30 on Market Street. Market street will most likely be closed to cars so please plan your journey accordingly ;-)

When you arrive: A volunteer will be at the front of the building to greet everyone arriving 12:40 - 1:20. You will take the elevator up to the 6th floor.

If you are early: If you expect to come earlier than 12:40 to help set-up, please let us know, so we can give you a contact number.

If you arrive later: No problem. There will be a phone number posted to the front door of the office building. A volunteer will run down and let you in.

Mary Burt article progress[edit]

Hi, I'm continuing on the Mary Burt project, we've asked some German speakers about her fame in Germany.

As I mentioned, I am interested and concerned with getting copyright free images into Wikipedia. I have a fabulous old dictionary with a phantasmagoria of images. How can we see if it's images could be used? It was called the New Century Dictionary. First copyright was in 1927, last one in this book was in 1938.

Unfortunately, I cannot give specific advice on the book's copyright status, but I can point you to some resources that should answer your question. Commons has a simple guide, Commons:Public domain#United States, and Cornell has a more detailed guide on the public domain. You will probably need to check if the book has any copyright notice. 2013 San Mateo Maker Faire[edit]

I can probably come Saturday, May 18, for the whole day (probability 0.95; there's one chance in 20 that other events could prevent that).

Do I need to buy a ticket for the Faire if I'm only going to staff the Wikimedia booth?

I'll be coming from San José, probably carrying a bike on Caltrain. I plan to bring a notebook computer plus an iPad Mini -- though I'm a little concerned about the iPad walking off. I can also bring some markers, a power strip, duct tape, and 6-7' ethernet cables if these would help.

Would you like me to print something? I have an Oki C6150dn color printer, which can provide fairly cheap, laser-quality copies -- 8.5 x 11" size (or anything that can be conveniently made from 8.5 x 11": I produce tri-folds and occasionally bookmarks).

If needed, I could also bring a relatively large desktop computer (Athlon 2.8 GHz quad core with 4 GB RAM running Fedora 18 Linux with a 20" monitor), plus a card table and chairs, and a case of water bottles. However, that would require me driving, and then I'd need to find a place to park, pay for parking, etc.

Regarding Listen to Wikipedia project[edit]

Hey Stephen, great job with the Listen to Wikipedia project. Kudos to both of you for bringing this vocal wikipedia to all of us. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to customize this and make it available for other language projects as well. I'm particularly interested for the Indic languages (as, hi, bn, te, ta, mr, kn, or, pa, sa and gu). Could you avail this for those languages and share the link for me to check the magic? WikiProject Orphanage is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive to de-orphan articles which have orphan tags!

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Wikipedia community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Wikipedia's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

deOrphaning script[edit]

Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.

What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message[edit]

Hello, Slaporte. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Zh-wiki copyright issue[edit]

Hi, Stephen, do you deal with copyright legal stuff at all? I'm looking for the right person to follow up on the discussion above.

Am I wrong in thinking that WMF being HQed in the US means all wikipedias including zh-wiki need to comply? Do Chinese admins have to be more forthcoming about posting and enforcing copyright policy if there's as little there now as there appears to be per User:Diannaa? International Women’s Day Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, Sunday, March 10[edit]

Entrance to the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education (OJMCHE), in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host an International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Sunday, March 10 from 11am-3pm PDT. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter Jewish women artists into the canon. An experienced regional Wikipedian will provided will be on site to teach, support, and guide the process. Participants can select artists ahead of time or on site.
