Emile Lessore

I think you are misunderstanding how to use the cite book template. The usual way to use it is in-line with the article text (as per one of my recent edits to the above), enclosing it in ref tags. That tells the {{reflist}} template to include it in the numbered references. Then there is no need for a separate References section listing the book again (which is what happens when you use cite book in that section. Hi ukexpat. To be honest, the whole citation thing is confusing. I read through Wikipedia:Citing sources and am trying to do it correctly. That page leads to a bunch of "main articles" which also lead elsewhere. Thank's for letting me know about the cite book. Please fix it so that I may see how I can do it in the future. Thanks. Because the article is about me, I have recused myself from editing it. I have been waiting for someone to come forward and find a way to re-work the information. Cite book

Thank You very much for Your message.

If I cite sources with the {{cite book}} template, I usually use these parameters:
{{cite book |last=… |first=… |authorlink=… |title=… |publisher=… |location=… |year=… |isbn=… |url=… |ref=…}}.

I agree with the deletion of pages field with full heart, because the page number of the citation must be modularized off from the bibliographical data, thus promoting reuse when several loci are cited from the same book. Wikipedia's guidelines describe this technique as Shortened notes + maintaining standalone "Notes" and "References" sections.

I admit that my obligatory usage of ref is my personal habit: it enables wikilinks to full references. I usually use fields authorlink and isbn, but I can accept if somebody finds their rank as "commonly used" be debatable.

In Hungary, location is almost always provided for bibliographical data, I do not know the English conventions.

I always keep the spaces before bars in attribute-value style parametrized templates. The best solution for the debate would be introducing a {{tlx}}-like metatemplate that would be capable of rendering even attribute-value style parameter lists. Then the typesetting questions could be modularized off from the logical representation.

Modularizing off locus specification from bibliographical data

Modularization is my analogy from the software development to a decomopsition. If several loci are cited from the same book, then we are forced to repeat the bibliographical data of the same book as many times as many loci are cited:

Techniques like "ibid.", "idem" are not scalable enough, they are fragile: if there are huge number of citations, and the order of citations is profoundly rearranged, then it can be easily confused. That's why it is better to maintain two sections in the appendix for naming the references. One for the loci, the other for the bibliographical data:

The technique is described in both as shortened footnotes, one of the several proposed ways in Wikipedia's guideline for references.

I use that in "my" articles, for example Sireniki Eskimos, Shamanism among Eskimo peoples. Sometimes I cite dozens of different loci from the same book, than it seems for me the most satisfactory solution.

Is it boring to search for the corresponding short notes and bibliographical records? That's what ref field is good for: providing wikilinks from short notes to their corresponding full references:

I use thatin "my" newest articles like Gödel numbering for sequences, Marind-anim.

Thank You for explaining the conventions. In Hungary, publishers rarely move, their location is usually given.

Unfortunatelly, I cannot make templates, I do not know the technique at all. Metatemplates are also very new to me, I have just discovered thir mere existence the day before yesterday. I have already done many promises for the next weeks (writing a general, primary topic article about bootstrapping (recently there is only a disambiguation page on bootstrapping).

Here you wrote "Changed protection level for "Wikipedia:Sandbox/Archive2": this is not the sandbox anymore. [edit=sysop:move=sysop])". The very next edit changed what you posted and used the edit summary "(I'm baaaaaaack ...)". I'm not sure what the point of this page is and the edit summary "(I'm baaaaaaack ...)" seemed odd, so I assumed that the last change to the page was odd as well. User:Graham87 is an administrator. The edit itself was adding a historical tag to the page. The page itself is older history from the sandbox - the original idea was to do this periodically so that the history of the "live" sandbox would not grow too large to be deleted. --Random832 (contribs) 20:00, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to leave a cranky message here since I know you only meant well, but I have just spent an hour cleaning up after your recent edits to template sandboxes that are on my watchlist.

You added sandbox notices to them that caused several problems:

1: They caused newlines thus breaking the examples.

2: They added code on top of the test templates that doesn't belong there, which makes it much more error prone when we cut and paste the template code into the actual deployed high-risk templates.

I had to fix the newlines you caused and then go around purging the pages that use the sandbox examples. And I removed your sandbox code from the sandboxes of the high-risk templates due to reason 2 above. Those sandboxes already have a clear statement below the test template that they are sandboxes.

So please don't add newlines when you add sandbox notices, and please don't add sandbox notices at all to high-risk templates' sandboxes, and please don't add sandbox notices to sandboxes who already clearly states they are sandboxes.

I only fixed the cases that are on my watchlist. I suggest you check and fix the newlines in the rest of the sandbox edits you have been doing. And don't forget to then purge the pages that use those sandbox examples, or people will think they are broken and spend time trying to fix them.

Hi David. Your message was not cranky and sorry for any problems I caused. I thought the "noinclude" would prevent my addition from affecting the sandbox. Template:Template sandbox notice instructs to add the template to the top of the sandbox page with the code below. All the pages I added Template:Template sandbox notice were not categorized in Category:Template sandboxes. If you can, please add Category:Template sandboxes to those high-risk templates from which you removed the sandbox code. I'll look over the sandbox pages that I edited. Thanks for the notice. As I explained above adding the sandbox notice causes two problems. Look at these two code examples:

The first example above causes a newline before the template code. That has big effects on how the template renders in its test examples.

The second example in theory has no negative effects. But once the code is working and a human copies and pastes the code into the actual deployed template it gets tricky. Since then the human must select exactly after the ">" character at the end of the first "</noinclude>" and until the start or end of the second "<noinclude>". That is tricky and error prone and every now and then it results in that faulty code gets copied and pasted into widely used templates.

That is why many of us now code our sandboxes like this:

Since that means we can copy and paste whole lines. That is, from the very start of the page until and including the whole line with the first "<noinclude>" tag. (Since we usually want that noinclude in the deployed template.) That reduces the human errors a lot.

And regarding Category:Template sandboxes. I don't see why we should need to categorise our test pages? That is just too much bureaucracy.

Oh, and by the way, I like your username! It gives me several nice associations. :))

Oh, and one more thing: Would it be okay with you if we move or copy this discussion to Template talk:Template sandbox notice? I think this discussion can be interesting for others, even in the future.

What do you think about that? It means the sandbox notice gets shown below the template being tested, but before any other explanations or long test examples. So the sandbox notice is still close to the top of the page. But the template being tested/developed is still easy to copy and paste to the main template without much risk for human error.

I think in regards to this edit, Chris Wattson was actually trying to fix the page, not realizing that it was uncaught vandalism by Special:Contributions/69.251.157.12. I have restored the disambig page to the last clean version. inserting nonsense - possibly good-faith, but needs a reference. inserting nonsense and inserting same nonsense - possible misunderstanding of previous vandalism. removing deletion template - curious, though removing a speedy deletion tag is not unusual if the user planed to do something with the page, including creating a redirect. using another's subpage - possibly good-faith to create a new userbox, although definitely in the wrong userspace making talk page a redirect - it's common for users to redirect their own userpage to their talk page, though this was backwards how to vandalize - slightly bizarre, but it's not vandalism in itself? Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/Wikipedia:Ireland_disambiguation_task_force

Can I urge you to read through the taskforce and its subpage? A huge amount of work has gone into it, and I'm worried that passers-by might vote for its removal and really take Wikipedia backwards. It is the culmination of a huge amount of work after endless polling on the subject. At the moment Irish articles are locked, socks and IP abound (the worst its ever been) and the issue has never been more intensely debated. We simply need a taskforce to stop people insisting on closing down debate because it is taking over talk pages (as many threaten to do). The taskforce is simply essential on many levels, and "forum shopping" on its opening proposal is surely not a good reason to delete it. (and my new proposal was not 'forum shopping' either, that is just one view by a small group of people who have already voted against it). One admin has already approved of the taskforce, and very soon it will get a great deal of interest and support. --Matt Lewis (talk) 02:30, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

The problem is that consensus has been 50/50 on this for years - this is a simply a chink of light. Plenty of debate and polling has gone on at IMOS (recently too), ROI, NI and WPI. It never ends (or stays in the same place), and at 50/50 the 'status quo' always remains. Ireland needs the taskforce desperately, and if someone didn't go ahead and "be bold" it may not have got the 60% that 50% of the stalwarts demand is needed. You have no idea how many people have turned away from this subject! The taskforce is the one thing that could bring them back - If I'm "shopping" for anything it is simply the people who have turned away in disillusion.--Matt Lewis (talk) 03:10, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Template:PD-USGov-Congress-Bio/Clean-up

The page is created. It's basically a Reader's Digest of WP:PD. Generally, the Biographical Directory is pretty much worthless, so you'll want to look at, say, the Library of Congress, the NYPL Digital Gallery, etc. to find support for the "typical" PD tags. I don't expect the majority to be salvagable as either they won't be PD in the first place or we won't be able to find the information necessary to support a PD claim. Visual gallery of toucans

Thanks, but the point of the identificatin gallery is to enable you to find a species if you only know how it looks, and a category doesn't enable you to do that. Nikola (talk) 18:11, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

There is also Category:Image galleries. You are right, and it's not only field guides, as I said, and I was serious, I have never seen an encyclopedia that didn't have such galleries. I of course agree that not every assembly of random pictures is encyclopedic, but galleries of this type are. I wanted to start a discussion at Wikiproject Tree of Life about this but of course never had enough time...

Things like Visual gallery of Pokemon wouldn't be an issue due to copyright and trademark concerns. Nikola (talk) 18:36, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

I've adjusted the template code at Talk:List of shock sites to {{Archive box collapsible|large=yes|auto=long}}. The |large=yes option makes the template blend in better visually with standard talk page templates (80% page width). The |auto=long bit produces automatic (piped!) links to all subpages named in the pattern of Archive 1, Archive 2, etc. Another advantage is that you don't have to "update" the template code on the talk page. Re: you notes about discussing the matter with the deleting admin first. I think if the "Before listing a review request" box information were moved into Wikipedia:DRV#Steps_to_list_a_new_deletion_review as item #1 (and renumber the steps as 2, 3, 4, etc.), people would follow it more often. DRV of Julius Pitzman

Thanks for your comments. About "Importance or significance" vs "notability". WP:CSD says to avoid speedy deletion an article does not have to prove that its subject is notable, just give a reasonable indication of why it might be notable. Therefore, I was using "notability asserted" as a convenient shorthand for edit summaries as I have seen that phrase used elsewhere when discussing A7. Maybe I should start using "IoS asserted".

As far as why I closed it. At the time I was going through the log, both me and the editor who nominated it "User:TenPoundHammer" were on #Wikipedia-en (IRC). Since he's also a non admin who closes AFDs I ask him for advise from time to time. When I'm reviewing one of his noms and the consensus appears to be "keep", if he's active on the channel, then out of courtesy I give him a chance to withdraw because he sometimes does that too when one of his noms is going "Keep". Instead he said "go ahead and close it" so I did since it already had been relisted once and the only delete vote wasn't really an argument for deletion. I had completely forgotten that I had earlier removed a speedy tag from the article and didn't realize it until last night when I was reviewing my past edits.

look all i can tell you is i used 15 references, it seems pretty factual to me but having 6 people stomp down 'hoax', can only lead me to conclude that 'the fix is in' when he says he did a 'google test' does he mean he did a 'keyword search' of the internet? and did he have to fast delete the article so it didn't appear near the top of google?

(when I refer to a spiked article at Federation of American Scientists, by John Pike is that original?) (that is a good reference site for intelligence matters) the main references are The US Intellegence Community, Deep Black, 1985 NYTimes article, InsideDefense, google earth, there are some stray internet references that confirm details (i.e. FAS confirming the NRO classification of area 58) when you combine google area 58 and dceeta you get 3 pages of stuff.

I'll do it your way, but watch - what i say will happen - regardless of the NPOV or references; I'll write it all in quotes from the sources, and they'll say it's copyright. actually, i've succeeded in getting the deleted article on a google(the deleted article is still on the first page), 'hmm what's that about'

          • Area 58 and DCEETA are the same topic and it is common to note prior deletion discussions on talk pages. That way, people considering nominating DCEETA can see what happend in the past. Noting the prior deletion discussions makes it less likely that DCEETA will be listed at AfD since the reasons for the prior deletions have been overcome. While a valid typo, it didn't seem reasonable to me to maintain such a redirect since forgetting to add a space seemingly could apply to a huge number of templates. -- Suntag ☼ 21:27, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, the reason I created it was because most of the related templates don't have spaces, so having the redirect saves one from having to remember each time whether this template had spaces in its name or not. Plus, it saves a bit of typing and is more easily added to the edit toolbar (which can handle spaces, but the syntax is obscure to say the least). It's not like redirects actually take any significant "maintaining" — in my experience, they stay put on their own quite well. :) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:55, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't know. Google Maps' satellite imagery suggests there's only one useful line-of-sight to the main building that isn't on Fort Belvoir property, and that doesn't seem likely to show very much, especially not a sign. More importantly, these folks don't sound like they want a photographer taking snaps of their facility, even from the road. It may seem silly, given that they don't seem to have restricted (or even blurred much) the satellite images available through Google, which are probably more revealing. But defense agencies are professionally paranoid. I think I'd at least want to call them first. No doubt your intentions are good, and i've no real idea it came about, but IMO your request implies confusion that could turn out to do unpredictable damage that might long be overlooked, and whose remediation would at best be onerous.
AfD pages are preserved as permanent records and guarded against changes. The template is lk'd from several AfD pages, and its deletion would conceal the meaning of those pages, and unjustly make signed arguments outside the template seem illogical. A request by me for deletion might accomplish deletion without anyone else being guilty of more than carelessness, but IMO it would be a serious offense on my part.
I'm also non-plussed by your apparent willingness to take up three editors' time for the sake of less than 1 kB of non-PAPER in a relatively esoteric namespace.

  I think (as your arg suggests) that my original plan was as troubled as the problem it was trying to address (apparently, independently nominated arguably related pages, plus further arguably related pages so noted before nomination). I certainly didn't invent the practice of multi-page nominations, but i'm guessing i was unaware of anyone else so formally extending that (probably bad) practice to searching out others' pages to "draft" into a consolidated deletion debate. (I'd argue now that the information gained by setting pages side by side is more likely to function as an ad-hom argument -- in effect, "the nom'd article is less worthy bcz the same author has previously contributed deletable articles" -- than to bring out patterns that make the situation clearer.)
  FWIW, i think the philosophy behind making it a template was that others might add to the list; if i thot that far ahead, i must have figured it could be done harmlessly by signing & dating each addition (but that at least would have called for instructions i don't recall noticing this week).
  As to the present, if you're willing to carry the ball in defending modification of the relevant transcluding pages to subst'n -- as a means of guaranteeing inadvertent change of their renderings -- i agree that that conversion would meet the objections that i raised. (I don't recall why, but on somewhere between 1 and a handful of occasions when i've annotated a closed AfD page, without asking permission, to avoid a more dangerous problem. I don't go around advocating for that practice, but no one has complained yet, and in this case i won't be the one to complain!) I don't recall how orphaned templates get deleted, but i can't imagine any continuing purpose for this one once it's orphaned.

AfDs are meant to have fixed text. Transcluded templates into an AfD allow changing the AfD after it is closed without changing the AfD history. On a different note, polling templates do not appear to have a welcome history in Wikipedia. Check dis out. Although {{PD-USGov-Military}} provides the copyright status, the image has no source information. Source information must be provided so that the copyright status can be verified by others. The source information was requested 23:07, 19 November 2007 and the request removed without the source information provided. You need to provide a URL link or some other source identifying information that is specific enought to allow the copyright status can be verified by others. Mass deletion nominations

Could you please scale down on the nominations. If you nominate a band and it is deleted, then you can have the albums and members easily speedied by referring to the band AFD unless the members played in other bands as well. That saves everyone a whole lot of time. Also, I would prefer if you gave a little more detailed nomination so people can see you made an effort to find sources apart from just googling. XfD warning templates

Hi
Following WT:Twinkle/Bugs#TW-B-219 (closed) I undid some of your changes from here, since the templates {{AFDWarning}} and {{MFDWarning}} are both used by Twinkle which at the moment automatically adds a signature after the warning. That could have been fixed there, but since it had already been removed from {{Adw}} and both {{afd1}} and {{mfd1}} still instructed to manually add the signatures (and so did WP:TFD FWIW) I removed the automatic signatures from the warning templates again.
Also, I for one often enjoy the ability to add some personalized text to AfD warnings whenever I add one manually, which is more difficult with the automatic signature.
I hope that's OK. I wouldn't mind a concerted effort to make them all consistent though, one way or the other (the RFD notice and {{idw}} still have automatic sigs). Cheers, Amalthea^Talk 15:50, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Some of the XfD warning templates carried ~~~~ with them and others required the user to add ~~~~ to the transclusion. At the time, it seemed more efficient to include ~~~~ with the templates. However, on using both methods, I think omitting ~~~~ from the XfD templates is best because most people expect to add ~~~~ after their posts. I had low priority planned to remove ~~~~ from the XfD warning template transclusions, but never got around to it. All the XfD warning templates should be somewhere in Category:Deletion templates. Please feel free to make all XfD warning templates consistent. In fact, it might be possible to have just one XfD warning template by adding a parameter to locate the XfD. I think if you put all the XfD templates on one sandbox page, you could that comparision to create a wording that would apply to all XfDs. -- Suntag ☼ 16:04, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Cracking good work on this relatively new article ! It puts my initial effort well into the shade - very well done. One small caution though on formatting (as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style). Song titles should be represented in quotation marks eg. "Milk and Alcohol"; and album titles in italics eg. Be Seeing You. Interesting cover - Is it the US issue?
Tony Moon's book "Down by the Jetty" clearly states the sleeve was "based on a bottle of the alcoholic tipple Kahlua" (P66) and that it was "Available in black, brown & white vinyl with matching PS" (P122)
The Feelgoods website [5] has an entire entry on Kahlua, which gives the story behind the song, and also states the sleeve was based on a bottle of Kahlua.
Difficult to put this in the article, when the sleeve shown is clearly not Kahlua!

The cover you uploaded shows a photo of the band in The Prisoner blazers and scarves, similar to those used to promote the Be Seeing You album. This is strange, as this was the previous album, to Private Practice, on which Milk and Alcohol appears. Unfortunately, I can't find a copy of the single's Kahlua sleeve, to explain the story and vinyl colours.
PS The World-Cat link you left is for the 1997 1st edition of the book, a second, revised and updated edition was issued in 2002 - I own both (page references above are from the 2002 edition), so I'm obviously what we call an anorak, but I've been following the band since Stupidity in 1976

Found the original - have replaced your cover with this, and referred to the vinyl and sleeve colours. This leaves your original cover picture "orphaned" - we could add it as a second cover, but really need to know where and when it was issued - the site you found it on was Dutch - maybe there was a problem with using the Kahlua bottle?

Let me elucidate (excuse the pun). Firstly, this is not a 'Valued image WikiProject'. It is a department similar to Wikipedia:Picture peer review, and is based on WP:FP. In response to your message, the department has already been proposed at the Village Pump twice, where it was approved both times. Support fro this project has already been gauged. It was also discussed at Wikipedia_talk:Featured pictures, where it was met with a vote of approval. It was developed over a period of several weeks, and then lay dormant due to the initiation of a similar proect on Wikimedia Commons. The design and setup is already underway, and is scheduled to open for nominations. In fact, the entirety of the valued images department, from templates to categories to the most basic criteria and guidelines, is completed and ready to be initiated. Several administrators have been notified of the existence of VP, as have frequent FP and FPC editors and nominators. The signpost has been contacted, as you have seen, as has WikiProject Photography. An illustraor, LadyofHats, has been asked to design a personalized seal for Wikipedia VP. Off the top of my head, I can say that {{DYKusertalk}} looks to be pretty much the same as {{DYKquestions}} (although I daresay I think mine is nicer ;) ). DYK hook

One of the discussions at WP:AN/I can be found here. This was quite a recent issue, but I guess it unfolded before you became active on DYK? The upshot is that the use of the main page is a sensitive issue, and there never seems to have been a clear set of guidelines on acceptable material to post there. Both WP:TFA and WP:TFP have made clear judgements that questionable content will not be featured. DYK has not really had that so far, so one administrator uploaded what he thought was an innocuous nom, that was considered provocative in its wording and featured scantily clad women. It unleashed a firestorm, though his subsequent desysopping was I think more about his reactions to the opposition than anything else.

Most of the other DYK regulars who have posted comments on this current porn film topic have remembered this I suspect. If scantily clad women are considered by many editors not to be acceptable, featuring a hook about a commercial pornographic film about a recently defeated vice-presidential nominee around the period of its general release is certainly going to be controversial. This is an issue that needs clarifying at an RFC for the entire wikipedia project over the guidelines for the use of the main page for TFA, ITN, TFP and DYK. I think you were right to pass it (as by DYK guidelines it was fine) but as you point out, that is in itself superseded by the admin conduct guidelines. Until the situation has been clarified one way or the other, noms that are judged excessively controversial by general consensus should continue to be shelved. Hi Tenmei. In response to your post above, I revised Template:Findsourcesnotice to give it optional parameters. In general, you can locate any category Templates used on any page by using the "edit this page" tab than the "show preview" button. This string leads to a page where the bottom of the page includes a section "Pages transcluded onto the current version of this page:" (sometimes reads: "Templates used in this preview:") which provides a list of templates used on the Talk:Yonsei (fourth-generation Nikkei) page. One purpose of the banner is to help editors locate source material for the article. Another is to give editors something to check before listing an article at AfD. Banjeboi's had a strong keep point in the Yonsei AfD about a simple search revealing a likelihood of material available for the Yonsei article. If Template:Findsourcesnotice were on the talk page of the Yonsei article, then perhaps it would not have landed at AfD. -- Suntag ☼ 18:59, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

GA template

Yes...that error message has been there since I first made it. I copied the code from another template. Stevanna Jackson

There is not single source of articles under Google news, books, and scholar, for Tessa which I could look up. Tessa Ludwick is also 22 years old and has been a Movie Surfer since she is 15 years old, and even if She was in a lot of school plays, and now her page has become so extensive, what is your explanation for Blaine Miller? I can answer this one. Fantasia, one user has already advised you to read Other stuff exists, but I will reiterate it here. Basically, the fact that another article is bad will never have any bearing on your article. Thank your for the DYK medal. The Tom Collins topic turned out to be a great find. The actual history is in old books, now easily searched through Google, the origins of the drink were declared lost in the 1920s, and modern writers on the topic merely copied each other's rumors. I started with a simple old book search at Google[7] and found enough info from the 1800s to generate the article. When I was done, I noticed that Tom Collins is an IBA Official Cocktail, which likely means that people going to the annual World Cocktail Competition will read the Wikipedia article to prepare for the competition and, on returning back to their bars, retell the tale of Tom Collins and source it to Wikipedia. -- Suntag ☼ 15:59, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

I agree that there needs to be some way of notifying people when a nom has been promoted... one idea that was brought up before (I don't remember by whom) was leaving promoted noms at T:TDYK but setting them off in a gray box or something like that (similar to what happens with old AfD discussions and stuff). I guess we have to decide between doing that or making a standard message to send people when their nom gets promoted. Both would mean a bit of extra work for the promoter (although I presume the setting-off plan would be slightly less extra work, since the nominator will already have the T:TDYK window edit open when they're copying the hook over), and sending messages might clutter talk pages (especially for the prolific nominators). Setting off promoted hooks in a box would avoid those problems, but it would have the added hassle of someone needing to pay attention to when the template gets flipped, and going back and removing those noms after the flip happens. In all, I think sending messages is easier to set up initially (a template message is easier to create than a template using <div> and stuff, which is very esoteric to me, to set off the old noms), but it's hard for me to gauge which one will work better in the long run. —Politizer ^talk/_contribs 19:19, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

On a side note, if we do decide to mark promoted noms by putting them in a gray box or something, I think that could be nicely built into {{DYKsuggestion}}...just adding a parameter like |promoted= that can take yes or no, and if it's yes it puts in some div bla bla bla stuff. The time problem was because I was using {{FULLDATE}}, which doesn't have a time-first date-second format (except for one that wikilinks the date, wh ich I find annoying). Ah ok, I see now. Moving the timestamp into {{tl:DYKsug}} seems to work fine. As for collapsing the vertical-ness...I originally arranged things vertically like that so it would be clean for reviewers. Pre-going live

Hey, sorry, but I have to head out in about 5 minutes and won't be back until later in the evening. Do you want to go ahead with the switching over old noms at T:TDYK, or wait until this evening so you don't have to do it all on your own? I don't mind either way.

Also, I figured it might be good to try doing about half of them with the vertical spacing from earlier, and half with the collapsed way that you have {{DYKsug}} set up now. That way after 24 hours or so hopefully vetters will be able to say either, "ugh, that was so cluttered, it took me forever to find the hook and whom to give credit to!" or "ugh, that stupid template took up so much space and there was hardly even anything in it!" and that way we can get a better idea which sort of spacing out is more practical. —Politizer ^talk/_contribs 21:07, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

I'll put back in the spacing. Eventually, if a bot reads the template to do the credits, we won't need the spacing. Plus, we can get feed back on the spacing as it was the original idea. Did you read the second article? I honestly believe that I addressed all of the appropriate reasons for deletion that were raised during discussion for the first article. The second article is subtantially longer and notes a variety of notable writers holding various views on the topic dating back to 1997. This should negate the problem surrounding a non-notable neo-logism or the suggestion that the first article was origional research. I provide numerous reliable resources in the second article (Marriage Privatization). If you read that article I am very interested in specific suggestion you might have. Please do not add categories to preloads

Hi - you added a category to {{GAN/preload}}. This template is not transcluded. Instead it is loaded into an edit window which GAN reviewers then save. As a consequence of your edit, over 60 GAN review subpages have been added to Category:Wikipedia GA templates. I invite you to go through these talk subpages (which all end with /GA1, /GA2, etc.) removing the category, hence fixing the consequences of your honest mistake. Spinoffs

Actually, "spinoffs" are only considered such when they are a topic that does not match the WP:WEIGHT guideline, regardless of discussion or not. This doesn't actually matter, because notability for topics, if notable on their own, allow for said works to exist. Milton, with thousands of books on him and tends of thousands of articles about him, is clearly notable, in the same way that Samuel Johnson or Charles Darwin is. None of this really matters, because these pages are created as part of the John Milton project. I work on FAs. I know how to build them and how to build the encyclopedia. Your assumptions leave much to be desired. But this is all ignoring the fact that your first sentence is blatantly incorrect and that there has been a lot of discussion on this birthday writing project. New sample DYKsugstrings?

Hey Suntag,

First of all, sorry I haven't had a chance to review any of your nominations yet; I did notice that you dug up a ton this morning, so that should really help out. Hopefully I'll have a chance to put some DYK hours in tonight or tomorrow.

Now then, Orlady brought up a problem, which is that a lot of nominators have been filling in the |creator= field even for super-old articles, and stuff like that...it's not surprising, since I doubt many people bother to look at the template documentation for that stuff (and, if I had designed the template better, they wouldn't have to...I need to keep working on trying to make things more transparent—the old me, back in my Python days, would be ashamed of what I have become!), and the parameters can be a bit esoteric. I've tried making a new template sample, to be included at T:TDYK and in the edit notice; there's an example of it here. I'm trying to get it small enough to fit in the edit notice, but big enough to provide relatively simple instructions that will cover as many "normal" applications as possible, and prominent instructions for where to find the more advanced stuff for those few users who do need to do something like nominate multiple articles. If you have a moment, could you take a look and let me know how you think this sample could be improved?

Article for Deletion - Maybe

You expressed an intention some time ago to to develop my biography which I discovered only April 19 after it had been online for over two years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Joseph_Cormier Yesterday someone placed a tag on it which I interpret as saying someone must develop it or it will be deleted. Elections in England and Wales, 1949

Thank you for nominating this article for DYK and improving it by writing the lead-in etc. I am not sure the fact of the LCC dead-heat really deserves to go on DYK. The Liberal seat made it a hung council and as I recall, Labour hung onto power through the use of the unelected Aldermen, so while the 64-64 draw between the two main parties was noteworthy as the results came in, there was no practical effect politically. If an in-line citation is needed for the dead heat, The Times of 9 April 1949 is the best one to quote. The headline was PARTIES DEAD HEAT IN LCC ELECTIONS. In fact I will addd that now anyway. re DYKBot

Hi Suntag, I've taken a look and I can't see any definitive reasons why it would do that. I've made a change to the code that might fix it but I doubt it. Time will tell. At the moment it seems like it would be best if I start recoding DYKBot from scratch, it's full of bugs and the code is such a mess that I can't reliably fix them. That will have to wait though. Opinions on the way to Consensus

Suntag, I just noticed this am you modified the mast head in my Talk:Ray_Joseph_Cormier It is an improvement, but I do think the facebook link to where many of the references can be seen and read should also be prominent.

As you know, the talk page and the Article lay dormant for a long time due to lack of interest. I checked it from time to time to see if anyone came forward to improve it. If you look at the history it is the same two Editors who have been constantly challenging its inclusion in Wikipedia. Naturally, I have to stand guard until someone interested in improvement volunteers.

The latest tactic was placing the Notability tag on the article and it is time for other Editors to post an opinion to reach consensus. I do believe consensus is reached when more Editors agree, either for or against the issue.

So far the two Editors are against recognizing the Article and two say the article meets Wikipedia requirements for inclusion. Because it´s my BLP, my opinion is biased. Peace DoDaCanaDa (talk) 14:49, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Also, I just wanted to let you know if you haven't noticed, Gatoclass and I have been discussing (here) updating {{DYKsug}} to make it auto-generate credit templates so the promoter can simply copy-and-paste them over to Next (this originally came up because \ / pointed out that some people have been getting credited as creator when they should have been credited as nominator, which we chalked up to human error in populating Next). Updated DYK template

Hi, I'd just like to let you know what the template {{DYKsug}} was just updated with a new feature: now, for all DYK nominations that include only one article, it auto-generates the credit templates ({{DYKmake}} and {{DYKnom}}), which the person moving the hook to Next may simply cut and past from T:TDYK directly into next. This only happens with single-article nominations; if the nomination has more than one article, there will be a message in the template saying "Credits must be done manually by the person moving this nomination to Next" or something like that. It will probably be a few days before you start seeing the auto-generated credit templates, since the template was only just updated and only the new nominations will reflect it; the first several times you see auto-generated credit templates, you may want to double-check the nom as you are promoting it, just to make sure the credits are correct.

There have been some other minor changes—mainly, now if a DYK nominator lists himself as both "creator/expander" and "nominator," the "nominator" field ends up blank (so that what gets displayed is "Created by User, self nom" rather than "Created by User, nominated by User." Also, the fields, |collaborator=, |collaborator2=, and |collaborator3= have been replaced with the more intuitive |creator2=, |creator3=, and |creator4=.

Another project for you

Suntag, I noticed your conversation with Daniel Case, and I just had an idea that seems like it might be up your alley.... I don't know how we would go about actually implementing this or keeping track of these kinds of things, but maybe it would be cool to have a list of DYK articles that go on to make GA or FA. (since the DYK credit template is transcluded in the talk page, the easiest way might be to have a bot that goes through all pages where that is transcluded, and return all pages that also have GA or FA in their {{ArticleHistory}}.) Of course, who knows, maybe such a list would just be embarrassing (what if we find that 95% of DYK articles stagnate and get ignored after their big day?) but if not, it may be fun to think about. —Politizer ^talk/_contribs 16:44, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Gonna be away for a while

Hey Suntag, I just wanted to let you know, I will be traveling and visiting people from now until January 12, so I will only be on WP intermittently. Is it ok if I leave a note on my page telling people to leave a message either with you or at WT:DYK if they experience any urgent template problems? (Normally I would say I'd just leave a message telling people to e-mail me, but since I might only be at the computer at all once a day or so, and on a few days I'll be driving all day, I probably won't be able to respond to urgent requests quickly enough)
