DYK QPQ

Hi - I just reread your comment about GA QPQs, and I noticed that you mentioned that you don't participate much in DYK because of the requirement for QPQs. If you like, I'd be happy to work with you on that - if you'd like to nominate something for DYK, I could do the QPQ for you, and just make a note in the nomination that that's what we've done. I'm not sure it's exactly 'by the book', but I've seen examples in the past where one person has made the nom and someone else has done the QPQ, and nobody seemed to be concerned about it, so I think that would be fine. Let me know if you're interested. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 11:00, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Girth Summit thank you. That is a wonderful offer. There will not be many. I used to nominate nearly every article I did, but the platform got increasingly stressful and I stopped submitting anything other than GAs. It isn't just the QPQ, but the entire format I find somewhat non-collegial. I write from an academic background, so putting citations on every sentence, when in fact an entire paragraph came from the same source, is not only weird, but also redundant. I don't write about popular culture, so the claim that there isn't mass appeal is rampant. IMO, it is a platform that is not so much about improving an article or making it accurate, as it is about making it intriguing or attractive, which seems to be the opposite of why articles are written for an encyclopedia. SusunW (talk) 14:26, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
You're welcome - my partner is an academic (early modern British history), so I've learned to appreciate scholarly subjects over the years, and I think I'd find it very interesting to work with you. Most of mine are about historic buildings plus the odd architect, so also fairly unappealing to a mass audience, but I'm glad to say that I haven't experienced any pushback yet for my nominations. Just drop me a note on my talk page when you'd like to submit one, or ping me from the nomination, and I'll try to find an appealing hook to review. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 14:33, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
Just a thought by the way - I'm about to submit a DYK (should be done in a couple of minutes) - if you'd like to review that, you'd have one 'in the bag' that you could use later? I take criticism pretty well, and given your prolific content creation to date I'd be an idiot not to take any advice you have to offer, so please don't be worried if you think that it needs more work or shouldn't pass, I can take it. GirthSummit (blether) 16:00, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
It is here, if you're interested: Template:Did you know nominations/St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Buckie
Girth Summit I reviewed it, and am so sorry that I cannot approve it, as it was well-written and interesting (and even better, made me learn something). I should state outright I know diddly squat about religion and its terminology, but the odd turn of phrase saying it was called a cathedral, made me wonder why they didn't just say it was. Apparently one needs a bishop to be a cathedral. Anyway, you can modify the existing 2nd hook, or propose another, or just kick me to the curb entirely and have someone else review it. SusunW (talk) 20:34, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
No problem - it isn't technically a proper cathedral, that's just how it's known colloquially, so it was a bit speculative. I'll think about an alternative hook and ping you tomorrow. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 22:18, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Canadian/American Blood Tribe Centenarian

Hello! In starting this article, Marie Smallface Marule, I came across her artist grandmother, Rosie Davis (née Smith) (c. 1874 - 1983). If anything, I thought this clipping was a pleasant read [1]. I'm not sure if she meets WP:GNG but thought I would check with others writing for this indigenous WIR effort. The other sources I found were [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Maybe if there isn't quite enough coverage for an independent article, a brief mention could be added to Marule's. Thsmi002 (talk) 20:20, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Thsmi002 real world has been crazy this week, but I'll get to it. I am not ignoring your request. Have an appointment in 30 minutes but should be home again this afternoon. SusunW (talk) 14:07, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
Thsmi002 I have no idea if there just isn't more information (lots of Canadian records aren't digitized) or if it is the problem that I have difficulty finding what is digitized because I am in Mexico. It could also be that her name is so common, or that she is a quilter. Truly quilters are hard to find sourcing on, perhaps because for many years they were considered craftspeople and not artists. It also is curious why her archives was first deposited in 1957 and there is no finding aid for the Glenbow Museum Archives. Were her records as an interpreter given to them? Do they have samples of her quilts in their collections? Seems odd that they don't specify what they have. At any rate, for now, we don't seem to have enough for GNG so I added her info to Marule's article and made a redirect. I am sorry I couldn't find more. SusunW (talk) 15:07, 18 August 2019 (UTC)

Alicja Iwańska

Hi. Looks close to GA level already. When you've finished nom it and I'll review it for you.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:10, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Doc, that's a lovely offer. I have a bunch of them close to ready, but I've been holding off on nominating any until the 3 that have already been nominated are reviewed. I need to see if I can find a few more photos for her. SusunW (talk) 19:55, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Possible collaboration?

Hi - thanks for the review, I think the hook we agreed on is an improvement on the earlier ones. On a separate matter, I wondered whether you might be interested on working on an article that I'm planning to write. I came across a person - Margaret Macpherson Grant - while researching the history of a church I'm writing about, and found the story fascinating - see this source for details. I generally write articles about historic buildings, and haven't done many biographies, but her story is tragic and compelling and I thought I just had to write about it. It touches on various sensitive issues though - nineteenth-century assumptions about 'feminine' behaviour, homosexuality, the slave trade - and since I'm not super-familiar with writing about these areas, I thought I'd reach out to a more experienced writer such as yourself to see whether they would be willing to help.

If you are interested, I thought I might put together a list of sources and write up the bare bones of a draft, and then ping you to see if you are able to add anything in terms of sourcing, improving the text, thinking about what sorts of categories or projects it needs to be attached to, that sort of thing.

If you're too busy, or it's not a subject that interests you, don't worry about it, I can approach someone else. I just thought I'd give you first refusal! Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 15:01, 18 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi again. I've written up the draft, it's at User:Girth Summit/Margaret Macpherson Grant. Seriously, if this isn't a subject that interests you, or if you don't have time to look into it just now, please just say so and I won't pester you! If there is any advice you could give me, I would be most grateful. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 20:58, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit, she is actually fascinating and right up my alley. I like people who are multifaceted and whose histories are complex. I'd love to collaborate with you on it. Sorry for not responding sooner. Been kind of crazy with real life stuff this past week, plumbing issues, health issues, hair issues (maybe that's the previous issue as they are related). At any rate, today, I told my spouse, no more peopling for at least two days. I needed to recharge and finish Alicja Iwańska. Now that she is finished, I can work on Grant tomorrow. SusunW (talk) 22:00, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks so much. Hope the various issues are not too serious! I've got my own impending issues - a couple more weeks of summertime freedom, then the school term starts again - so I'd be delighted if we could make some progress with this before then, but I'm happy to go at a pace that fits in with your needs. I spent most of today on the current draft - I'm sure there are typos and dodgy sentences, but my main concerns are whether you think I've structured it properly, whether I've managed to maintain an encyclopedic tone, and of course whether you have access to other sources that might allow us to expand or clarify anything. Please feel free to do whatever you think is necessary to the draft, or make any comments you want to on its talk page. Looking forward to your thoughts. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 22:08, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi - just a quick note to say I've been following the changes you're making, which are excellent - the sourcing and the content is looking so much better! GirthSummit (blether) 19:21, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit You give me far too much credit. You had most everything in it already. I've only tweaked the text, added a few details here and there, and formatted some of the references. I typically format all of them to Harvard style as then I don't have to "read around" them in the text. But, just doing the books allows you to input the page numbers, which is necessary for a GA. I just found a source which is quite interesting...Is Alexander Cray Grant our guy? Apparently he wasn't the only Grant family member who went to Jamaica--looks like they also owned property/slaves in the Danish colony of St Croix and in Sierra Leone. SusunW (talk) 19:36, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
No, I think he is not Alexander Cray Grant, but there were a ton of Alexanders in that family. SusunW (talk) 19:45, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
I just read the article - very interesting. I think you're right though, probably not our guy: I haven't seen 'Cray' mentioned in any of the sources, also, while I don't know how they calculated their figure, all the 'historic inflation' calculators I've used put the £24,000 that our guy received at substantially more than £1.29 million - closer to double that figure. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography sources are really good - you've filled in a lot of blanks that I was worried about, like her parents' names (and I didn't even know that she had a brother!).
How well versed are you in image copyright stuff? I've never uploaded a picture before, and am not really clear on my mind on the requirements. I've managed to find a couple of pictures of her on-line, and given the date I assume they are out of copyright, but I'm not sure how all that kind of stuff works - it would be really great to get a couple of pictures though for visual appeal. I'm thinking perhaps one of her, and one of Aberlour House. GirthSummit (blether) 19:55, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit I always start with a records search, WP doesn't like primary records, but secondary sources easily misstate information. I found her birth record first and by searching for her and her father, found the ODNB entry. Odd that it didn't come up in a search for her. The ODNB only mentioned that her brother died in India (I wonder if it was really in the West Indies???) so I looked him up in primary records too. Weird thing about Alexander Grant son of George, I cannot find him. The University College London piece says his parents were George and Janet Donaldson, their records show children: Margaret 1776, Mary 1780, William 1782, James 1784, Robert 1787, Charles 1790, and Anne 1793. Weird? Why would they register some children and not others?
Copyright is a pain in the ... It all hinges on publication. Give me the links you have and let me look at them. SusunW (talk) 20:18, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
That is odd about the children. The book about gravestone inscriptions also makes the connection though - apparently George's gravestone actually says on it words to the effect of 'this memorial was put here by his son Alexander Grant of Aberlour House on such and such a date'. Perhaps he had more than one name? E.g. William Alexander Grant, but went by Alexander and dropped the first name when he was older? (It's not uncommon nowadays in Scotland for people to go by their middle name - I know a few people who do that, but I can't speak for back then)
So, there's the image of her here (the article that started this whole thing off!). I thought I'd come across another one while searching for sources, but I'm not seeing it now that I look again. There is a picture of the queen visiting Aberlour Orphanage - it's possible that I glanced at it and assumed it was her earlier on while searching. I'll let you know if I can find any others.GirthSummit (blether) 20:29, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Girth Summit Clearly the original photo was published, but the issue is when and where? What you have is evidence that it was published in 2014, which means the only way it can be uploaded is as fair use (for a dead person). Let me do some checking in the very few British databases I have access to.

Girth Summit, I find nada. So, you can either e-mail the blog LBS@ucl.ac.uk and ask them the source of the original photo, find a copy of that source and clip the picture yourself and upload it to commons if it was published prior to 1924. If it was published after 1924 for Britain for a known author 70 years after death, or an unknown author 70 years after creation or first publication. The easier option is to clip the blog image and upload it as fair use, justifying why you are uploading a non-free image like I did the one for Iwańska. For the house, either you have to find one that someone else took and released all rights to, you have to take one yourself, or you have to do the publishing research, same as above. SusunW (talk) 21:10, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
I've e-mailed the blog people about the photograph, I'll wait to see if they get back to me. I'll dig around later and look for an image of the house - I expect there is one on meta, there are thousands of pictures taken from geograph.co.uk which I usually use to illustrate my articles, I'd be surprised if there wasn't one showing the house (it's a Cat A listed building).
As an aside - the DONB site that you were using, do you have independent institutional access to it, or is that something I can get through the WikiLibrary thing? I've never used it, but have just filled in an application for access to Newspaper Archive to see whether I can get at any of the original reports that were referenced in the LBS blog. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 21:30, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit I live in far southern Mexico and have zero access to any public libraries and have no affiliation with any "institution". All the databases I have access to, if they aren't free on the web, are through the WP library. (Note for OUP there are 2 different sections, Scholarship and Journals, I think scholarship is what gets you access to ODNB). I checked newspaperarchives.com for Grant but found nothing on either Alexander or Margaret. (Was hoping to find some information about him in the Jamaica Gleaner). There are articles about the trial in newspapers.com, but apparently between Sunday and Monday my subscription expired and I am waiting on them to renew it. SusunW (talk) 21:41, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Oh - sorry, I'd just assumed that you worked at a university, I guess from the quality of your work and the familiarity with these sources. Seems like the Wikipedia library is pretty darned useful - I'll see about applying for newspapers.com as well then, and maybe a few of the other ones...
Where do you think we are with this article then - I'm thinking that with some images attached, it's probably ready to publish, but maybe there is more stuff that you want to add? GirthSummit (blether) 22:00, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit I think it is ready to be moved to mainspace. Do not submit it to AfC. If you cannot move it, I will. We can always add the images later, but it will need them if you want to nominate it for GA. I typically ask Ian to copyedit before I send anything to GA, as he is both a polyglot and an excellent proofreader. SusunW (talk) 22:22, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Cool - I'll move it now - don't worry, I don't go through AfC (I couldn't cope with the wait!) I'd love to submit this for GA review, but agree that it will need to wait for the pictures. If Ian would be willing to give it a look over, I'd be very grateful for that too. I've really enjoyed working on this. GirthSummit (blether) 22:36, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Hm. Annoyingly, I couldn't find any images of the house on Commons or on Geograph.co.uk. I did find out though that our article Aberlour House is way out of date - it hasn't been used as a school since 2004, and is currently the head office for Walkers Shortbread (according to this). I think I know which article I'm going to be working on next - do you think that non-free fair use might apply on the image here, which I rather like? GirthSummit (blether) 23:17, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
I don't know anything about loading buildings as fair use. I only ever load dead people that way. I'll ping Ipigott and see if he'll give Grant an edit when he has time. SusunW (talk) 23:19, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
OK, thanks anyway - looks like I have some reading to do. cheers GirthSummit (blether) 23:22, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Interesting article. I've done a bit of copy editing but I am still rather confused about the various mentions of Alexander Macpherson, Macpherson and Alexander Jr at the beginning of Early life. Although I am not too keen on boxes, perhaps it would be useful to have one if you are working towards GA. The article also needs to be adequately illustrated. Let me know if you need further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 09:32, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you Ipigott. I've changed our subject's name to Margaret in that paragraph and added a box. It is very confusing. Apparently everyone in that Macpherson and Grant clan had to use Alexander as a name ;) . Makes it really hard to sort them all out. SusunW (talk) 13:17, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi - I think all of the recent changes are great, thanks for looking at it Ian. Just to let you know, I've left a message at Diannaa's talk page about whether we might be able to use those images. From my reading of the non free use criteria we should be alright, but I didn't feel confident enough to go ahead with uploading them without asking for an expert opinion. Fingers crossed... GirthSummit (blether) 13:39, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
Actually, just checked and Diannaa has replied, she's happy that the portrait is usable due to its age, but we can't use a non free picture of the house because it still exists so we could just go and photograph it. I'd like to learn how to upload images to Commons, so I'll do that later today when I'm at home, and put it into the infobox. GirthSummit (blether) 13:45, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit Yes, that's me. I know how to do the things I do with photos. Anything outside that box, I ask someone. Just hit upload in your left task bar. The top link will let you upload fair use. Below that is a link to upload to commons. Ping me if you need help. SusunW (talk) 13:48, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
OK - that didn't see too difficult! I've added the image to the article. I'm about seven hours drive from Aberlour, so I'm not going to get up there to take a photograph of the house any time soon - do you think we'd be able to squeeze this through a GA review with just the one picture? GirthSummit (blether) 18:01, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
I've done some with only one photo for exactly these same reasons, just can't find any appropriate images. I think you are fine as long as you don't try for FA. I promise you, trying to "prove" when photographs were first published is required and it is a nightmare. SusunW (talk) 18:26, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
I've never tried for an FA before - that would be a new experience! I've been thinking about it, and I wonder whether I could persuade Walkers Shortbread to donate an image or two to Commons. I'm planning to write up Aberlour House properly, and would need an image for that; from the accounts I've read so far, Walkers actually did a pretty good job with the renovation/restoration, so I'd have thought they'd be happy to illustrate that here. I'll see if I get any response to that before nominating for GA. Thanks again! GirthSummit (blether) 21:31, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit me neither. I took an article through a class A review and everyone assured me the next step was featured article. The photo requirements were absolutely frustratingly exhausting and it turned me off of doing anything further for a while. Still toying with working on it, but not sure I am yet ready to tackle a FA. SusunW (talk) 22:09, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
OK - I've just pinged off an e-mail to Walkers Shortbread, I'll let you know if they get back to me. A reviewer who has done a GA for me in the past had a skim over the article, he said that he thought it was ready for a GA nom already, just could be better-illustrated. So, if we can tick that box I'll press the button. I haven't done an A-class either I'm afraid, so you're ahead of me there - happy to try for GA and see where we stand. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 22:36, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

Update Walkers have agreed to donate some images of Aberlour House to us. I've given them instructions for how to upload, or how to e-mail to ORTS - fingers crossed we should be able to add a picture of the house to it soon, then I'd like to nominate for GA review. Would you be interested in being involved with that? Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 18:15, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

Girth Summit Very cool. Sorry been under the weather all day. Will be glad to help you with it. SusunW (talk) 01:43, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Miriam Butterworth

On 24 August 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Miriam Butterworth, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that every Saturday for decades, Miriam Butterworth protested against wars such as those in Nicaragua, Iran, and Iraq, as well as in opposition to nuclear arms? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Miriam Butterworth. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Miriam Butterworth), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thank you for improving articles in August! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:15, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

Thank you Gerda Arendt. I had a lot of fun focusing mostly on indigenous artists from Oklahoma. So many notable women in that bunch. I also finished Iwańska who worked with indigenous communities and was a fascinating woman to learn about. I am sorry to be so slow in responding, been struggling with a sinus infection, but better today, finally. SusunW (talk) 22:23, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Good to hear that you feel better, and all these women ...! Concert tomorrow! the piece with the green GA symbol, click on interview for a pic of the choir. Please check out the article, there's a peer review open, or just the chance to fix my language in the article and tell me what's unclear. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:24, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Alicja Iwańska

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Alicja Iwańska you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Dr. Blofeld -- Dr. Blofeld (talk) 09:42, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I haven't forgotten on this, I'll review this within a few days!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:16, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

No worries Doc. SusunW (talk) 12:46, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Alicja Iwańska

I was going through the list of newly-created biographies about women writers -something I occasionally do to check if they've been tagged for WPWW- and came across the article on Alicja Iwańska. Because of its wonderfulness, I instantly knew you had created it! Just a gut feeling, verified after I checked the edit history. A wonderful read; thank you for writing it. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:59, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Rosiestep, thank you so much. It was Piotrus who brought her to my attention and made sure that the Polish links and names were proper. (That noun conjugation thing always sends me for an expert's guidance). Her ties to indigenous communities (and Mexico) were fascinating to me, so I wanted to write it. Doc has said he will review the GA when I nominate it. Been trying to find some additional images, but it is hard to focus with my medicine head for this sinus infection. Your note gives me the confidence to just nominate it and stop putting stress on myself. SusunW (talk) 18:15, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld I did the nomination. Wasn't sure if subcat should be language and literature or culture, sociology and culture. I nominated it in the latter category, but obviously both are applicable. I really appreciate your willingness to review it and know we will make it better in the review process. SusunW (talk) 18:24, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
I hope you get over that sinus bug soon! I'm thankful I've returned from Wikimania without feeling ill. Can't say the same for previous years. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:09, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Me too, it's an energy drainer. I'm glad you didn't catch anything on your trip too. Always makes travel difficult if you are sick. Okay, being sick just makes everything more difficult. I didn't travel anywhere and it is just as frustrating to deal with ;) Fortunately, I got a lot of indigenous women added this month before it arrived. I feel better today than I have for the last few days, so hopefully am on the mend. SusunW (talk) 19:26, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Get better soon! I'll snap up the review now, will review probably tomorrow sometime. I did ask Ipigott in French what the two other articles you nommed were but he didn't respond.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:21, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld the other 3 are Jeni Bojilova-Pateva, Adele Zay, and Józefa Joteyko. I have others that are ready to nominate, but I have been holding off, as the backlog just gets worse :) Thanks for looking at Iwańska. I wouldn't complain a bit if you are up for looking at the others :) SusunW (talk) 13:39, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld: Sorry I missed your request. Susun has been doing a great job with all of these. Hope you can find time to review Iwańska fairly soon. I keep looking to see if the review has started.--Ipigott (talk) 10:34, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

There you go, three reviews, someone else will have to do the other one, but if it's not been snapped up within a few weeks I'll do it as well!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:16, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld I am beyond thrilled and appreciative. Thank you so very much. Haven't had internet since yesterday, but will get on Bojilova ASAP. SusunW (talk) 13:26, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

dyk

I'm sorry that you'd end up reluctant to contribute at DYK as a result of anything I would do there! I know it can be a frustrating place to help out. :( --valereee (talk) 14:28, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

Valereee, honestly my issues with DYK truly have nothing to do with you and long precede your involvement over there. I used to contribute every article I wrote there, so am very familiar with it. Then it got to be all about the subjective idea that it had to have broad interest, i.e. my dead women are usually too limited in scope as not popular culture figures/topics. And then the minutia focus kicked into high gear with redundant sourcing requirements, i.e. citing sentences individually when the whole paragraph came from the same source (never done in academia unless a quote is involved). (The straw that made me walk away the first time was actually being asked to prove that Mrs. and Madame were synonymous in the U.S. south when referring to 19th-early 20th century black women.)
As a QPQ reviewer I've seen a lot of substandard stuff, which makes it ironic that there is only sometimes serious scrutiny of the accuracy of hooks. It's very inconsistent and seems to me that interest (maybe even shock value) over quality is the focus, with a dash of rigidity and subjectivity and thrown in to make it incomprehensible. (Heck, this kerfuffle didn't even involve an article I wrote, but it still was confusing to me as a reviewer, as to how I could "fix" the issue.) I quit DYK for over a year and then decided only to contribute with GAs. Even now I don't nominate them all, and have walked away swearing I'd never send another article there numerous times. It is just not worth it to me, as my experience is that it is a non-collaborative platform. Every time I think maybe it's changed, try it again, I see that it hasn't. Far more satisfying to just write decent articles and avoid the frustration. SusunW (talk) 15:17, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Any time you have an article you'd like to contribute, give me a heads up. I'll review your dead women, lol. I DYK many of my own articles so I'm always in need of building up a few QPQs to use. And when an issue comes up with one I've done the review on, I'm always willing to help continue the process. And, yep, it's inconsistent. It's the deadlines. Gotta feed the beast. --valereee (talk) 15:55, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Valereee Thanks. That's a nice offer and I appreciate it. Won't change the nature of the beast, or probably my walking away from time to time, but it at least gives me assurance that it won't always be a negative experience. That's an important perspective to keep in mind ;), as I usually avoid stuff that causes stress. SusunW (talk) 16:19, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld Thank you so much. Moving these three out allowed me to nominate a couple more that have been waiting in my pipeline. Truly appreciate your reviews. SusunW (talk) 19:19, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
No worries, if none have been snapped up within 10 days I'll tackle some more.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:25, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
You rock Dr. Blofeld Thanks! SusunW (talk) 19:26, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

Women vs feminine in list titles

You might be interested to known that I have made a considerable number of redirects to all the lists starting "List of female..." etc., etc. from "List of women..." as I know like most Americans you prefer to use "women" as a qualifier rather than "female". In addition to helping with search, I hope this will encourage editors to add their new biographies to the appropriate lists. I was really surprised how many there were. One of these days, it might be useful to make "female" redirects on all the ones using "women" but for the time being I'll leave things as they are.--Ipigott (talk) 15:51, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

That's a really good idea Ian. I'm kind of surprised it hadn't been done before, but am very glad you thought to look. It honestly would never have occurred to me. Our search engine is not very intuitive and I often spend a lot of time searching for how to word something to find an article that I know is here, but I don't know the name of. This should be really helpful. SusunW (talk) 16:03, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Alicja Iwańska

On 20 September 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alicja Iwańska, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Polish resistance member Alicja Iwańska became an academic and compared political, religious, and racial persecution in Europe to U.S. segregation restrictions? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alicja Iwańska. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Alicja Iwańska), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiConference North America 2019

You are invited to WikiConference North America 2019 on November 8-11 in Boston. Deadline for Program Submissions and Scholarship Applications is September 20. Hope to see you there! --Rosiestep (talk) 00:41, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the invite Rosiestep, but I'm pretty sure we won't be traveling to the states this year. Boston, November, hmmmm, I have an adorable picture of my husband, age 3 there at that time of year, standing in snow {shudder} deeper than he was tall. SusunW (talk) 04:38, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
But good news, the doctor has lifted my travel ban! (Looks at map of sunny places longingly.) SusunW (talk) 15:49, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
Good news indeed!!! --Rosiestep (talk) 15:56, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
Good news!!! I came to say that about the below, but this is even better! - Informal peer review: Clara Schumann if you (y'all) have time. Travelling, last day sadly, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:21, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Margaret Macpherson Grant

Hi SusunW, I finally got some images of Aberlour House, and have added on to Margaret Macpherson Grant. I'd like to nominate it for GA, but I'm not sure which category it would best fit into - do you have any thoughts on this? Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 13:51, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Girth Summit the photo looks great. Glad you were able to get it. I always have this problem with women, the categories seem far too vague. Maybe "World History" or "Culture, sociology, and psychology"? SusunW (talk) 14:29, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Yes - those were the two categories I was thinking about - or maybe just miscellaneous. I'll go for 'world history' I think. I'll let you know when it gets picked up, cheers GirthSummit (blether) 14:44, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Yay! Good luck. SusunW (talk) 14:51, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Just to keep you in the loop, Gog the Mild has started the review. I'm happy to keep on top of any language / formatting issues, but if you have time, I'd really appreciate your input if there are questions about content, especially about any of the sources that you brought. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 22:13, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Oh dear. Should I just surrender now, and wave it through  ? I may be able to start on it tomorrow. I hope that you have reserved the Netflix script rights. Gog the Mild (talk) 22:37, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit, wow, that was quick. I've worked with Gog the Mild before, top notch reviewer and no, you know I want you to give it a thorough review Gog ;). (I only expect you to use magic wands for technical stuff). I've watchlisted the review page and am happy to help out. SusunW (talk) 22:39, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
So this is a barnstar of thanks for your amazing contributions. Only recently you identified a German nurse who won a Florence Nightingale medal.... more great work that is filling that enormous gendergap. Thank you Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 14:03, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much Victuallers! I love learning about these women. Honestly, from writing, I learn as much as I impart. Thank you for all the work you do to promote our articles. SusunW (talk) 14:10, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Jeni Bojilova-Pateva

The fact was ... that Jeni Bojilova-Pateva became a women's rights activist when she was barred from teaching because she was married? valereee (talk) 00:02, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi SusunW, I adjusted the indent type on your response, as the "outside" list type needs to remain as a numbered list. If this in any way changed your meaning, please let me know and we can find a better solution. — xaosflux Talk 14:53, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks to you both @Xaosflux and GreenMeansGo:, technical stuff, as we all know is not my forte. SusunW (talk) 14:59, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Great teamwork

Some tasty Scottish treats

Ditto, I feel exactly the same way. A total pleasure to collaborate and would gladly do it again. SusunW (talk) 18:55, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Just FYI, I'm drafting a DYK nom for the article now - I know that's not your favorite arena, so assumed you'd be happy with me doing that bit. GirthSummit (blether) 19:09, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Done - there's a link to the template on the talk page. Please feel free to edit either of the hooks, or to suggest alternatives, if you like. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 19:24, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, and yes, not my favorite part. I appreciate your taking the lead on getting it done. SusunW (talk) 19:25, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
