New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

- WMF at work on NPP Improvements
More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.
- QUALITY of REVIEWING
Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.
- Backlog
The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.
- Move to draft
NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.
- Notifying users
Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.
- PERM
Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.
- Other news
School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

- @Sphilbrick: Hello, I think the Include-NIH template covers this because the National Human Genome Research Institute is a part of NIH. Maybe a more specific template for NHGRI could be created. Seeking Clarification
Hi there,
We were wondering if you could tell us why this particular addition was made to the page on July 11, 2019.
'"In 2018, 5 lions from Hakuna Mipaka were killed by poachers. The facility now employed 6 armed security guards.[5]"'Bold text
We also noticed you have been the only contributor to make changes to the page (between July 10th and July 11th) with the exception of today's change which we are assuming, without verification as of yet was made by a page administrator. Without prejudice we'd like to know what brought you to add to the page. We are only seeking clarification for our personal understanding of a larger issue.

I note that you created the article about Crystal Marie Fleming a few months ago. It's pretty brief and susceptible to additions that give undue weight to specific incidents when the rest of her academic/writing/commentary career isn't well documented, particularly as it isn't a well-watched article. I've flagged it at the Women in Red wikiproject, asking for more watchers; however, I thought you might have some additional insights or information about this academic that could be used to expand the article and better illustrate notability.

The Pauses (band)
Thank you for approving my latest article: The Pauses (band). Much appreciated.
Looks like someone with the band has since made some edits, and the Wiki bot noticed. They uploaded a new photo, and the Wikibots removed it. Plus the article doesn't quite read like a Wiki.
I admit, I'm new to this. What's the proper etiquette for fixing this? Just do it? Move along? How does it read to you and what's your opinion?

BLP banner
Hi - thanks for your review of Margaret Macpherson Grant - I just had a question about the BLP banner that you put on the talk page, just for my own understanding. I don't think that we actually mention anyone in the article who is still alive - some of the buildings mentioned are still standing, but the people are all long-dead. I didn't want to change the living=yes bit in the banner without checking with you though, in case there's a reason for this I hadn't thought of. In Special:Diff/914568930, where is your evidence that Tanya Khovanova is of Jewish ancestry, or herself Jewish? I don't see any sources for that, but maybe I'm just missing them because of too many search hits for her writing on the deliberately-difficult mathematics entrance exam problems used to exclude Jews from Russian universities (in which she says nothing about her own ancestry or religion). —David Eppstein (talk) 07:02, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

- Backlog
Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.
- Coordinator
A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.
- This month's refresher course
Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.
- Deletion tags
Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.
- Paid editing
Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.
- Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
- Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
- Not English
- A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
- Tools
Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.
Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.
Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.
DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

photos deleted -- how do I resubmit them?
The photo of Pamela Longobardi with an Aghan boy was deleted, because an editor decided it was "unlikely to be my work" -- But this is false. The photograph is mine, taken by me, and in fact it has been printed in an article by me (cited in the article under "Wagner-Lawlor") with credit to me. How can I ask for it to be reinstated? Also deleted was a photo of her -- just a mug shot that was supplied with her press materials. Can you advise? Marie Smallface Marule
Hello:
The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Marie Smallface Marule has been completed.
Please let me know if you have and questions or concerns.
There are a couple of points I wanted to draw to your attention. In the Advocacy section this sentence appears: "Marule helped plan the 1972 conference." - I assume this was for the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. It then references a preparatory meeting in 1974 and again I have assumed it was for the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. (In its WP article it mentions the conference was held in Guyana in 1974). I trust this is correct. The article states Marule had "numerous" siblings. One, David, is mentioned at the start of the Personal life section. It seems a little unusual to mention him and not her other siblings unless he was particularly noteworthy. (??)
