Antonietta Stella

Thank you for the nomination, but rarely have I seen such an underdeveloped article (no ref but a link to a copy of something else which doesn't support half of what it claims). It's better but not there yet, - actually far from there. Since you are looking our for Women in Tech, I thought I would try submitting her information to you. I tried to add it myself (twice) but the article had 2 issues: 1) It was flagged for "copyright" even though the text was our own. And 2) it was flagged for "conflict of interest" for the fact that Dr. Yesha and I work at the same place. If I don't work on this though, I don't know who will. Dr. Yelena Yesha (born July 27, 1962), a pioneer for women in technology[1], is currently the Knight Foundation Endowed Chair of Data Science and AI[2] at the University of Miami Institute for Data Science and Computing ("IDSC"). At IDSC, Dr. Yesha is also the Innovation Officer and Head of International Relations. In this role, Dr. Yesha assists faculty in engaging government and industrial partners to collaborate with the University and consults with faculty on developing research ideas into innovations.

Dr. Yesha was the Founding Director of the National Science Foundation Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA), an NSF-funded Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) that aims to develop long-term partnerships among industry, academia, and government. CARTA partners with Rutgers University New Brunswick[3], North Carolina State University[4], the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC)[5], Tel Aviv University, and the University of Miami[6].

Dr. Yesha’s accomplishments in technology include leading initiatives for NASA, IBM, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the National Science Foundation (NSF). As Director of the Center of Excellence in Space Data and Information Sciences (CESDIS) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, she oversaw the development of Beowulf—a high-performance parallel computing system now used in universities and research labs worldwide—and major components of the Linux operating system, which were later commercialized by Red Hat.

In the 1990s, Dr. Yesha represented the U.S. at the G7 Summit, leading the development of resources on electronic commerce, and examining its impact on policy, governance, and compliance. She later received funding from the European Union and NSF to build a Master of Science in Electronic Commerce program across Europe. From 1997 to 2005, Dr. Yesha was Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal on Digital Libraries, and she now serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Smart Homecare Technology and Telehealth. Since 2004, Dr. Yesha has been a leader in bringing Data Science tools such as machine learning and AI to health care, improving physicians’ diagnostic capabilities, and advancing precision medicine.

Dr. Yesha received her B.Sc. degrees in Computer Science and in Applied Mathematics from York University, Toronto, Canada, and her M.Sc. degree and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from The Ohio State University She has published 11 books as author or editor[7], and more than 200 papers in prestigious refereed journals and refereed conference proceedings[8], and she has been awarded external funding in a total amount exceeding $45 million dollars.

An internationally recognized leader[9] in the areas of blockchains[10][11][12][13][14], cybersecurity, and big data analytics with applications to electronic commerce, climate change, AI[15], and digital health/medical informatics[16] (including radiology[17]), she is currently working with leading industrial companies and government agencies[18] on new innovative technology.

Internet Archive Scholar vs. JSTOR

Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up.   • Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the deletelogentry and deletedhistory rights. This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Hello TJMSmith,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 816 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 858 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
