this isn't jumping the gun (as I assume there's some bit fiddling to be done adding accounts on the JSTOR end), but what are the steps after acceptance for getting an account? Do I get an email? Yeah, there's still a bit of fiddling. I now have to email a form to everyone, they fill out the form, and this populates a spreadsheet with usernames and email addresses. Our contacts at JSTOR have access to the spreadsheet; they do the mailing of logins from there. Any clarification you can add to the instructions would be great. Libraries and Wikipedia

Hi Patrick, I live in Victoria and work for the BC Libraries Coop. I am interested in doing more stuff in BC to get libraries engaged with wikipedia. Wondering if you'd ever be up to grab a coffee or beer when I am in Vancouver, would love to get your perspective as someone who's been at this much longer than I. Scott, great to hear from you! Timing is perfect - I just got back from the ALA annual in Las Vegas. My colleague Jake and I, with help from some great people at OCLC (who are really excited about the WP/Library interface) ran an edit-a-thon, did a presentation, and chatted with a lot of great people. Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf14) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 17. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 22, and to all Wikipedias on July 24 (calendar).
  • CirrusSearch was removed as the primary search method from Wikimedia Commons and the Spanish (es) Wikipedia due to a high server load. The plan to enable it on the Dutch (nl), Japanese (ja), Polish (pl) and Russian (ru) Wikipedias was also postponed to a later date. [1] [2] [3]
  • The tool that stores information about languages (CLDR) was updated to its latest version. You can still help translate language names into your own language so they can be used in the sidebar and other places. [4]
  • Translation memory for newly translatable pages should now offer more suggestions. [5] [6]
  • A tool to convert MediaWiki pages to LaTeX is now available on Tool Labs. [7]

VisualEditor news

  • Tablet users visiting the mobile version of Wikimedia wikis will be able to use a special version of VisualEditor starting on July 31. You can test the new tool by choosing the beta version of the mobile view in the Settings menu. Feedback is welcome. [8]
  • All windows in VisualEditor have now a new design. Main action buttons will always be located in the top bar and will use simple words rather than icons. [9]
  • You can now easily open links inside the link editor, for example to see their target. [10]
  • Several bugs related to the positioning of the cursor around some items (like images and references) were fixed last week. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

JSTOR Account update

This is not a nag, I promise. :)

I read your update on the accounts and felt that it might be a good step in the process once you have accepted a request here to send an email via the Wikipedia mail system to say "Hey, we got your request, some wheels are turning in the background to make it happen. Stay tuned." That way you can give some prompting to an editor that their request has been received and immediately find editors without email enabled. Does that make sense? There's definitely some more infrastructure to built into the Wikipedia Library's processes. I'll talk to Ocaasi and Madman about getting something like that set up, especially for a big batch of accounts for something that is as desirable as JSTOR. We've been focusing on getting new partners, and some of the process stuff isn't scaling well now that we do have a good crop of donations, and expanded numbers with our older partners. JSTOR email

Hey, I received an email from you (via MadmanBot) last night about getting access to JSTOR via WMF, but I already have that access.

No, these are legit emails. When JSTOR upped our number of accounts, they deactivated the old accounts as of the 15th of this month. So even if you had prior access, you need to complete the form to continue your access. OwenBlacker, you already have access through another avenue? The Interior (Talk) 16:10, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf15) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 24. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 29, and to all Wikipedias on July 31 (calendar).
  • You can now download the latest version of the anti-vandalism tool Huggle.

VisualEditor news

  • You can now create, edit, and view HTML comments in VisualEditor. [21] [22]
  • The cancel button in VisualEditor toolbar has been removed. You can still use the Read tab and the Back button in your browser to cancel your edit. [23]
  • If you try to use a template which has no suggested or required parameters in TemplateData, you will now be asked to add the parameters. [24] [25]
  • You will no longer be able to edit a page if you can't create it, for example on pages protected against recreation. [26] [27]

Future software changes

  • You will soon be able to filter Meta-Wiki's user rights log by wiki and user. [28] [29]
  • Wikidata will soon be able to store data about article status, for example "good article" or "featured article". If your wiki has highlighted content, please make sure it is on Wikidata's list. [30]

Patrick, I'm back and saying Yes, it would be great if you would be willing to serve as an volunteer for the course. The course is interdisciplinary, focusing on economics and library science/information studies. JStor access

Hello:

I would like to have JStor access to help in my Wikipedia editing. The instructions on how to do it are not clear to me, but it seems I should contact You. So that is what I am doing. JSTOR needs an email address (this is what I meant by account) to send a login and temp password to you. I need you to tell me what that address is so I can give it to them, no conversation needed. Jodosma, JSTOR has the account codes. They require us to collect email addresses so they can send out access to you. We emailed a form for you to enter your email, but for some reason you did not get it. Thus, the most direct way for us to get you your free account is for you to email myself or The Interior directly so we can then add your email to our list and send it to JSTOR. That is how this works. Your tone, on the other hand, does not work. It is not ok speak to other editors like that, particularly to someone who has put in many hours helping to set up these partnerships. They are, in case you forgot, donations, and we are, in case you forgot, editors and people like yourself. Mount Polley disaster

Hi, you're in a better position to watch this article, I don't have time to work on its expansion though did find a lot of coverage/commentary which I've added links to on Talk:Mount Polley mine disaster. I know the St'at'imc lined the Fraser at the Bridge River Fishing Grounds the other day, as I belong to the local "Idle Know More" FB group, which gets interesting (I know many of them), as a vigil for the salmon and also watching for signs of the pollution...which should be hitting there right about now. I know Sage Birchwater, also correspond with him on FB regularly so will ask him to scrounge up a public domain image; a map is also needed, I'll add a mapreq template to the talkpage.Skookum1 (talk) 02:53, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

I may be too angry about this to work on that page, at least for a few more days. I did a lot of treeplanting in the area, and swam in/drank from Q. Lake many times. GLAM project - first contact!

Hi! I'm brand-new to editing on Wikipedia, and I'm keen to start out adding reference links to online sources available on my institution's website. I've read an account from User:WilliamDigiCol about the hiccups he ran into when he started editing, and I'd like to avoid making the same mistakes (if only to conserve effort, if nothing else). At this point, I've only been given internal permission to add links to digitized publications, so adding images may be possible in the future but is not part of my current project. Also, I've read a ton of the Wikipedia help and markup pages, which was totally overwhelming, so I just added a two or three links to get a feel for it. Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed? Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf17) is on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since August 14. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis on August 19, and on all Wikipedias on August 21 (calendar).
  • There is a new protection level called superprotection. At the moment, only some Wikimedia Foundation employees have access to it. Administrators can't edit "superprotected" pages. [70] [71] [72]
  • You can now create empty pages directly. A message asks you to confirm that you want to create an empty page. [73] [74]
  • You can search for Wikimedia tools using a new list of tools. [75]
  • You can watch the first videos from Wikimania 2014. Some of them are about technical topics. More videos will come later.

  • After August 19, you can use Wikidata for inter language links on Wikinews. [76]
  • After August 19, you can use Wikidata for badges like "good" or "featured" articles. Next week, you will be able to show the badges in the article sidebar on Wikipedia, Wikisource and Wikiquote. [77]

I do love Fassbender, and I do remember him, though vaguely. I binge watched that series quite a while ago, when my video store was Limelight on Alma. I'm not sure if non-enwiki edits counts as "You have a minimum of 1000 edits to the encyclopedia"[1], but if it is possible, I would like to have an account, adding kowiki contribs.

Revi, the 1000 edit count is for all Wikimedia projects, it could include sister sites as well. So you are qualified! I will happily add you to the list, but do you mind making an application at WP:JSTOR, just for record-keeping/transparency? Also, I have two favours to ask. I realize that the Wikipedia Library has few if any Korean-language materials, but ko.wiki has bilingual editors. Could you make a post to ko.wiki letting editors know about the Library/Journal access? Hey, just wanted to let you know that I've been (productively) using my JSTOR access to review some good article nominees. It's been very helpful and I'm glad you've taken on the (sometimes frustrating) project of shepherding people through the accounts process.   • There was a problem on right-to-left wikis with Wikidata log entries. The text was messy in watchlists and recent changes. The problem is now fixed. The same problem will be fixed soon for user names. [110] [111] [112]
  • New users are randomly chosen for a test on 12 Wikipedias. They get messages with ideas of articles to edit. The ideas come from what they have already edited. [113]

  • There was a problem on the English Wikipedia on September 19. It was due to edits on a template used on many pages.
  • Sites were down for users in the Pacific area around 7:00 UTC on September 20. It was due to a problem in the San Francisco data center.
  • There were two bad bugs messing up articles in some browsers in VisualEditor. We fixed the bugs and updated the sites. [123] [124]

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf22) is on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since September 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis on September 23, and on all Wikipedias on September 25 (calendar).
  • If you have more than 2000 notifications, the oldest ones will be removed.[125] [126]
  • In the "Vector" skin, the icon used for users will show a neutral gender. [127] [128]
  • The VisualEditor template tool now tells you if a required field is missing. [129]
  • The "Cancel" button of the VisualEditor save window is now called "Resume editing". This shows that you can still edit and you won't lose your changes. [130]
  • There are new keyboard shortcuts in VisualEditor. Use Ctrl+Shift+6 for code and Ctrl+Shift+5 for strikethrough. [131] [132]

  • Errors from Scribunto (Lua) are now shown on the page. Before, you had to click on "Script error" to see them. [139] [140]
  • You can add an "autovalue" for a field in TemplateData. When users add the template to a page, the value will be added automatically. An example is when a clean-up template shows the date it was added. [141]
