Entry for Alan Howard (Nutritionist)[edit]

This is my first biography for Wikipedia. I will first add the basis and then expand on it. Note that the payment received covers the research for the biography and entry of text. I have learnt about Wikipedia in my own time. I am not a professional editor.

Greetings and thank you for taking interest in Wikipedia. Since you are editing a science related article, you should be interested in joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Science. Now, to your submission. Your submission is a BLP, biography of living person. Hence, all of your points, claims must be inclined with citation. This is because, if any factual conflict arrises in the future, your incline citation will act as evidence to defend your points. If not present, some sections might be omitted from the article and other penalties. Yes, your early childhood section is unsourced, and for example, many sections in your "Academic Career" is not cited with inclined citation too. The first lead paragraph isn't. And Early work on atherosclerosis too. 4th and 5th paragraph of Early Work on Obesity are not inclined with citation too. It will be a little troublesome for a BLP because it is a biography of a living person and information must be as accurate and reliable as possible. And if you have any queries pertaining to reliable sources, please read WP:RS. In essence, cite third party sources: mainstream publications, newspapers, magazines or books. Stay away from homepages and official websites. Sources must provided extensive and in-depth coverage, a whole article that is. For your scientific nature article, journals will also do fine. Cheers. File permission problem with File:Ray Cooper (2010).jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ray Cooper (2010).jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 11:32, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Where to put comments[edit]

Comments do not go in articles. Either the article's Talk, or if you want to directly reply to someone, their Talk. I deleted the comment you left in the article. David notMD (talk) 12:01, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As to whether it can be raised to Good Article, doubtful for biography of a modestly notable living person. Right now it is ranked Start-class. With some improvement it can make C-class. Minimally, make sure all the references work (many don't) and are properly formatted. When I work to improve an article I do not also upgrade the class. David notMD (talk) 12:07, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Flawed references[edit]

At the Alan article, many of the references do not work. Others refer to the organizations being written about. This latter is considered primary sources and not accepted. Ditto interviews with Alan. All refs should be content written by people who have no connection to Alan or any of the businesses he has been involved in. A ref to a patent is not confirmation that The Cambridge Diet exists/existed. Until this article is much improved, I concur with the header tags. David notMD (talk) 12:39, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following references either do not connect to any website, or connect but the text in question is not supported by the reference, or otherwise flawed: 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22. David notMD (talk) 17:01, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@David notMD:Thank you David. I am working through these now but may have to leave and finish tomorrow. Tomp-uk (talk) 17:10, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@David notMD:I've been through all the references now and removed many (with text) that I think are the problems. Two that I'm not sure about are the book references. Now numbers 7 and 10. There are now what I believe to be secondary references: 2, 5, 8, 13. Is the article sufficient now to remove the header tags? thanks for your help. btw, do you know Alan? Tomp-uk (talk) 19:40, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tomp-uk, please do not edit any page in mainspace where you have a paid relationship – doing so is very strongly discouraged. You may request changes by using {{request edit}} on the talk-page of such articles. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:58, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Justlettersandnumbers: I am no longer paid for any editing. I was paid for the time it took to create the original entry. I am editing it now to make it comply with Wikipedia rules. As such I am a volunteer although with a declared conflict of interest which has been accepted in a previous edit by an experienced editor. The focus now for this article is on content. I hope this is acceptable. Tomp-uk (talk) 09:34, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I never met Dr. Howard. My own research interests never overlapped with very-low-calorie dieting. I left academic life in 1985 for a series of industry jobs. I did know people in Boston who were involved with the low calorie, protein sparing product that led to user deaths because the protein source was amino acid incomplete hydrolyzed collagen. Help me![edit]

Please help me with... I need some help with the page Ray Cooper (singer-songwriter) It has been given the tag {{Undisclosed paid|date=May 2020}} I was not paid anything to create this page. A complication may be that I did accept payment to create another page but that was before I appreciated fully the view of Wikipedia editors towards paid editing. Once I realised this, any editing I have done has been in my own time and for no payment Can this tag be removed? I am also working on resolving the other two tags. I may need some help with that but wanted to tackle one issue at a time. Thanks for your help. Tomp-uk (talk) 11:40, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any connection to Cooper at all? How did you come to be paid for the articles you created for payment? 331dot (talk) 13:48, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Q1: I am a friend of Ray Cooper. Q2: I was paid to create pages for Alan Howard (nutritionist) and for the Howard Foundation (UK). I was in conversation with his son Jon who, when he found out I have a technical background, asked me if I could create those two pages on Wikipedia and offered to pay me. I'd not done any Wikipedia page creation before but was and am a fan of Wikipedia. It was only later that I realised that some Wikipedia editors are very against paid editing and so am not doing any more paid editing. Tomp-uk (talk) 14:51, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I have decided to remove the paid editing tag based on your answers. I would still encourage you to declare a COI and abide by WP:COI when relevant. 331dot (talk) 14:57, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
