We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%

Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC

New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers

Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors

Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration

Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

I saw your comment on mobile (unable to make edits) and went back to change my vote from "Keep" to "Strong Delete" because I find the edit industry operating outside the bounds of the rules to be contrary to the nature and purpose of the Wiki community. Could you explain better?

I wonder what you mean by the term: "at some risk of deletion?" The article is a translation and I have researched and cited sources which are outside the french original. I am glad you read the french version because you made mention of it. Could you point out specific areas where inline citation are sorely needed? The french wikipedia has a template named, ref souhaitable, that means, references needed. I'd like to see those. I'll then work on them. Thanks a million. @Emekadavid: the article specifically should have references to secondary sources (which I mentioned), such as books, newspaper or magazine articles. It contains references to grenoble-inp.fr and Letudiant.fr (which is an ok source although it's possible uninformed editors could mistakenly see it as a student newspaper). I moved the external links within the article (Research laboratories section) to references per WP:ELPOINTS #2 (another editor might prefer to completely remove those), but those are also primary and semi self-referential sources, since the labs are part of the university. I searched on google and in Questia (both for École nationale supérieure de l'énergie, l'eau et l'environnement and "ENSE3") and couldn't find much about the university; some articles by people who research there are available but this doesn't help. Perhaps some articles are available in Le Monde or Le Dauphiné libéré. As I understand it, the referencing requirements for the English and the French Wikipedias are different (or at least not enforced the same). I am busy right now; I have other things on WP and elsewhere on my mind, so I'd rather not bother about the links since I consider them to be secondary concerns! @Emekadavid: Take your time; as far as I'm concerned there's WP:NORUSH. Keep in mind, I made substantial efforts to improve the article and I would prefer not to see it deleted. This is part of the route map hiding behind the "Expand" link in the infobox. The file has been deleted from Commons. Route maps are tricky, so you'd best ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains.

Hi MakersMark73. I did not write that you were engaged in vandalism. I wrote that you "removed some content from True Detective (TV series) without explaining why", which is what you did when you didn't leave an edit summary on that edit. Also, it looks like several other editors reverted your changes to that article and left comments on your talk page about it. If you remove large amounts of content like that from articles, you need a very good reason, which you did not provide when I reverted your edit. Also, if you are working for HBO and editing this article (which is about a show on HBO), you have a conflict of interest and are engaged in paid advocacy editing. According to Wikipedia policy, "paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question." Dear Tucoxn, I am a new WIkipedia user, and am in the process of attending a course after attending a workshop. I seem to be doing everything correctly according to my teachers. However, it seems that you are the person who has removed several of my images that I have the rights to, and somehow a "bot" is involved in this process as well. I too am a busy person, and cannot answer every email at the drop of a hat, due to my full time job (and real life).

I respectfully request that you please put all of my photographs that you removed back onto Wikimedia commons, so that the multiple pages I've devoted many hours to, are fully functional. While I appreciate the work you do to keep Wikipedia procedures properly managed, I must communicate to you that you do not have my permission to remove photographs that I own, and own the permissions to. I send many emails to the permissions email address, with proof that these are my photos, yet either you are not respecting that, or there is a significant "time lag" between the human intervention, "bot" and email process. Just wondering what your role is in the Wikipedia universe. You seem to have the same fundamental qualities as the overwhelming majority of 'admins'--are you a reviewer, editor, person of arbitrary authority?--that I have encountered in my experience with this supposedly open online encyclopedia:

Of the perhaps 30-odd individuals whom I've dealt with for the past three to five years, all but two or three... roughly 90% of you have shown yourselves to be completely uninterested in actually helping article creators like me accomplish their objectives in posting scholarly, professional, informational, and/or educational articles about noteworthy subjects (with attractive, well-composed, obviously free-use images inserted). Your role seems almost universally to be to cruise the body of Wiki contributions and reject with sadistic glee (and offering no comprehensible, easily furnished alternative) any of a million deviant postings--deviant for not satisfying the Byzantine system of rules that no normal human consciousness can reasonably deal with.

Whenever I submit my work into the bowels of King Jimmy's Holy System, I feel like Dorothy trying to get an audience with the Wizard of Oz for the benefit of my friends, the Tin Man and the Lion... and being barred by those funny-looking gargoyle creatures--or were they the flying monkeys with the big teeth--until I come up with the magic word or a ton of bureaucratic chits from persons on or around the Wiz who have major pull. Is that your function, Tucoxn? Is it your job to prevent individuals from seeing the Wiz and thus having clean, easy access to the Magic Kingdom? You get your jollies out of rejecting and denying people and offering no help whatsoever?

If so, then my congratulations, you are performing superlatively! I mean that. How do I get to have your level of authority in Wikipedia? Seriously. Can you tell me how to work my way into a position where I become an esteemed gatekeeper? I know this is a volunteer business, so you're not making any money. Contrary to 90% of the Wikipedia 'admins' I've dealt with so far, I would derive immense satisfaction from being helpful and accommodating--provide step by step instructions, person-to-person, on how to make an article/image poster successful in what he is trying to do.

Nothing personal, T, it's just a system and you're the way you have been trained to be. I'd really like to know how to get to have your level of authority in the system--if it's possible without an advanced degree or some special qualifications that assure unquestioned obedience to duly constituted authority. You can tell I'm unhappy, and I fully expect you'll remove this entry from your talk page, but I'll have it over on mine. But that's okay, I know you're a good person and so am I, just venting a little bit and I'm pretty sure I'm expressing what 90% of the contributors feel dealing with the Wikipedia system. Please if you can help me find out how to climb the ladder of helpers in Wikipedia or point me to a source for Wikipedia for Dummies.

Possible translation?

Dear Tucoxn,
There is a very interesting article that just obtained a featured status on the French Wikipedia. It is describing a statuette found in Tunisia and representing Ganymede. It has a particularity: it has been stolen in November 2013 and thus attracted media attention.
As I saw you were listed in available translators from French, I was just wondering if you would be interested to translate this article and participate to sharing the knowledge about this artwork with the English-speaking readers. Signature

Hello AmaryllisGardener. I changed my signature, although I have been using it that way for what seems like a couple years without adverse comment. In addition to not having received any adverse comment in the past, I find your request rather unfortunate for two further reasons:

1. My old signature did not violate any of Wikipedia's guidelines for signatures at Wikipedia:Signatures. Most importantly, it is not a signature "that is intentionally and persistently disruptive". Further, it is not a distracting or confusing signature and it does not "blink, scroll, or otherwise cause inconvenience to or annoy other editors". Also, it does not use superscript or subscript. Please see Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing your signature, Wikipedia:Disruptive editing, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Docu, and "Wikipedia talk:Signatures/Archive 9#Blinking and Other Signature Customizations." for more information.
2. Other editors' signatures above mine on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Go Phightins! also cause the same effect of disrupting the way surrounding text displays. I do not understand why you choose to single me out, as opposed to also contacting at least User:Dainomite and User:TheQ Editor.

I didn't mean to single you out, I just noticed yours first. About the guideline, Wikipedia:Signatures states in the Appearance and colors section (which is considered a policy): "Avoid markup such as <big> and <span style="font-size: 200%;">^{(or more)} tags (which enlarge text); this will often disrupt the way that surrounding text displays." Stefan2: Thanks for the notification. I uploaded this image and I currently live in Fiji. It's extremely difficult to say for certain that the team's logo has changed to this new image. See User talk:Tucoxn/Archives/2013#Suwa FC. Indeed, several recent photos indicate that the logo has not changed, although it is very hard to see: from facebook, and this image from this article (dated 29 June 2014). Usually, Fiji teams at this level do not have city logos on their shirts but I don't think it has changed to the new color logo; in fact, I believe the proposed logo was produced by a fan or is a hoax. I would support the change if photos of the team wearing the logo can be found or if the logo is available from the official team website or the Fiji Football Association.- tucoxn\^talk 22:24, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Joe Vitale 5. I'm sorry for your misunderstanding but I did not delete the album cover image for the article on Bête Noire (album). The file File:Ferrybete.jpg was deleted from Wikipedia on 20 July 2014 by User:Gilliam, an admin. (I noted this in my edit summary.) The file was nominated for speedy deletion because it had no evidence of permission (see WP:CSD#F11). The file was already deleted before I removed the red link for it from the article. I'm completely unfamiliar with Bête Noire and Bryan Ferry and you probably know a better image for the cover art than I do. If you think this image is the right one, I can try to upload it and add it to the article with the right permissions (fair use for album art). When I removed that red link, I was simply trying to help clean up a huge backlog at Category:Articles with missing files — you're welcome to help, too! Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Tucoxn/Archives. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

December 2014 GOCE newsletter
