License tagging for Image:Entrance_Detail_of_Dome_.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Entrance_Detail_of_Dome_.JPG. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 08:49, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Max and Nadia Shepard Recital Hall, and it appears to include a substantial copy of https://www.newpaltz.edu/fpa/facilities.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.)

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 11:13, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Max and Nadia Shepard Recital Hall requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. File source and copyright licensing problem with File:Shepard hall.jpg[edit]

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Shepard hall.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 21:23, 18 May 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:23, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading this media, (it's appreciated.)

However, it would be nice if you could give some kind of indication as to what license the media is under. That way other people can be confident in making use of it for many varied purposes :)

Adding license information also helps prevent media you've put effort into creating from being deleted :)

You may wish to read Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags#For_image_creators which will assist you :)

A tag has been placed on Sparre Olsen requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 15:45, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Tzim78. You have new messages at JohnCD's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I have turned this into a redirect to the Max and Nadia version - we don't need two identical articles about the same room. If the article is kept, it will probably be sensible to keep the redirect, because there does seem to be some confusion about what the room is called. Potential CoI[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. I notice that the IP you've been editing from (when you forget to log in) is located at SUNY New Paltz, and that generates some concern about COI for me. Also, please don't cast more than one vote in AfD discussions. Additional comments are fine, but please make just one vote. » scoops 5x5 17:57, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributions[edit]

Hello! First off, thanks for your contributions. If I may ask though, what is your mother language? Your English, I am sorry to say, is insufficient, and from what I have seen in your articles in the Greek Wikipedia, your Greek isn't any better. This is very surprising given that you are, according to your own statement, American-born and have a BSc, so I have some trouble believing you are who you claim to be. As Wikipedia requires a minimum competence in English, among other things, this is of some importance. If English is not your mother language, then you should state so and limit your edits accordingly, or ask for the help of other users, perhaps via WP:AfC. Wikipedia welcomes any and all, but you do not help by creating articles that are unreadable, nor can you expect other users to hurry up after you, cleaning them up. Cheers, Constantine 19:16, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I mainly disagree with Constantine. Your contributions are welcome. Stub articles including ones which require some "cleanup" by others are allowed and can be significant contributions to make. You are certainly not required to state who you are, or explain anything personal about yourself. However, it is perfectly fine for Constantine to suggest use of "Articles for Creation", wp:AFC. I used it myself for many hundreds of articles over a long period. You can create a draft article in "draftspace", e.g. at Draft:Smithtown Greek Orthodox church to make up a name. Then develop it, possibly slowly. Then when you are ready, "submit" it for approval following directions at wp:AFC. Then there are very nice editors there who might help develop it a bit more, or make suggestions, and then "promote" it to mainspace. Articles created this way are much more likely to survive in mainspace without being targeted for deletion by AFD or other processes. Anyhow, the main thing is you should feel welcome and you should contribute where you like! --doncram 22:19, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tzim78. See my note about AFD in next section below. You are indeed welcome to comment and "vote" in the CFD discussion. But the category is not needed, in my opinion, because there is Category:Greek Orthodox churches in the United States already, which covers two of the articles. I do hope you'll help develop the list-article more. cheers, --doncram 22:07, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The AFD discussion has already been closed with "Keep" decision. I hope you don't mind that I moved the the article you started to List of Greek Orthodox churches in the United States, for reasons explained at the AFD (a Greek Orthodox U.S.-only list is needed, and the first two entries were in that narrower area). See that I and User:E.M.Gregory added to the article. Your continuing to develop this list-article at its now-narrower scope would be great. Also feel free to start world-wide List of Greek Orthodox churches (currently a redlink) if that isn't created soon by me or someone else. Also please feel free to start List of Orthodox churches in the United States if you like, to link to the Greek Orthodox list and the corresponding Russian Orthodox and Coptic ones and more. Disambiguation link notification for August 22[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Samuel Gridley Howe, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cordage. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Problem with your custom signature[edit]

You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your preferences are set to interpret your custom signature as wikitext. However, your current custom signature does not contain any wikitext.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box. (It might already be empty.)
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

More information about custom signatures is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures. 19:04, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

How to call a named ref[edit]

I noticed that you undid some of my fixes to Michel Dragon. You're calling named refs incorrectly. When you use #family, that links the ref to a section in the article named family, not to the ref named family. There are two ways you can call the named ref:

  1. <ref name=family />
  2. {{r|family}}
    (if you want a different page number use {{r|family|p=178}}

Your method of <ref>[[#family |Louise Pecquet du Bellet, 1907]], pp. 161-164 </ref> doesn't work correctly. Schazjmd (talk) 22:57, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributed article, Madonna of Constantinopli[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Madonna of Constantinopli. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Hodegetria. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Hodegetria. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Fram (talk) 14:33, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi thanks for creating this article. When we translate or borrow from other language wikis it’s a requirement to acknowledge the source. The best way to do this is to include it in your edit summary (e.g. “translated from el.wiki”) and there’s also a translation template you can add to the talk page. If you can confirm whether you reused material from the el.wiki article I can add the template to the talk page for you if it’s needed. Happy editing Mccapra (talk) 02:31, 29 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Articles on Greek scientists[edit]

While I heartily commend you on your work on Greek scientists (and other topics of Greek interest), may I point out a few troublespots that can be easily avoided, much to the benefit of your articles:

  • Greeks don't, as a rule, have middle names; the middle initial found in many names is the patronymic, and is usually there only to distinguish from namesakes.
Great Thanks!
  • I noticed while researching my next historical figure that Apostolidis uses a middle initial in most of his publications and I believe it is sufficient to do the same on Wikipedia. This is the actual name he is using. Look at this example. http://www.biol.uoa.gr/istorika-stoixeia/nikolaos-apostolidhs.html

  • The genitive form of a Greek name is not independently notable, and does not need to be mentioned in articles.
Thank You.

  • Modern Greek names are not usually translated (e.g. Ηρακλής to Hercules), but phonetically transliterated (Iraklis), unless they themselves used some other form to publish in English or other languages. WP:GREEK is useful here.
Thank You but, I do not see how Hercules had to be changed to Iraklis.
  • Because his name was not 'Hercules'; it was the (modern) Greek form of that name, 'Iraklis'. In most cases, when rendering non-Latin alphabet names into English, these are transliterated, not rendered into their English equivalents, unless they have a WP:COMMONNAME in English. This is a Wikipedia policy, WP:TRANSLITERATE. E.g. Theodoros Pangalos, not 'Theodore Pangalos', but Alexander Onassis, not Alexandros Onassis, because Onassis is internationally famous under this form of his name. For relatively obscure people like Mitsopoulos, the strict transliteration is always the correct form. Constantine 15:05, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Great Thanks, I will work on that..
    Tzim78 (talk) 15:43, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You would have to point out some examples.
  • E.g. the repetition of [[National and Kapodistrian University of Athens|University of Athens]] in the articles. Links should be provided only in once in the main body of the article, and once again in the lede, if necessary. Constantine 15:05, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • You have a tendency to write very short sentences ("He did X. He did Y. He then did Z."), even though in many cases they are about the same topic.
You would have to point out specific examples, I have a writing style, I wrote over 165 articles. I love administrative feedback. Please be specific.
  • example: 'They were part of the Rizou family. They were originally descended from Epirus.' -> 'They were members of the Rizou family, that was originally descended from Epirus' or similar. or ' He was co-founder of the Museum of Physical Geography. He was the Director of its Zoological Department' -> ' He was co-founder of the Museum of Physical Geography, and director of its Zoological Department.' Same subjects or objects in two run-on sentences, belong together. It makes the text easier to read. Constantine 15:05, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank You for taking your time, I will try to improve that..
    Tzim78 (talk) 15:43, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is a tendency (which I noticed also in your painters' articles) to include in an article all people who were somehow contemporary with the subject. This is not relevant for individual articles, but a subject for infoboxes, overview articles on e.g. the painters of a period, etc. Only people who interacted with, or e.g. influenced/were influenced by, a subject are notable for that individual.
I will take that under consideration.

  • Please take care with your sources. There are often many errors concerning them, such as incorrect names, publishers, volumes, etc.
You would have to point out specific examples. I would love to improve my system.
  • I will review those, thank you for taking the time to point that out.
    Tzim78 (talk) 15:43, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't hesitate to reach out to other Greek users, or post queries at WP:GREECE, if you need assistance. Constantine 12:50, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Xaver Landerer[edit]

Hi there. Thanks for your work on Francis Xaver Landerer. I've been unable to find a credible source that says his first name was Franz (and if it was, then why "translate" his first name to Francis?] and would be grateful if you could point me in the direction of one. Best regards. Damac (talk) 16:39, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Some sources list him with the Anglicization of Franz which is Francis, while others use Franz. The alternative names are added to Wikidata. I would assume both are acceptable. Below is one example of each. There are lots of them in google books with both examples. I put several on the page. You have to perform a full search with the subjects name ie Francis Xaver Landerer or Franz Xaver Landerer in google books and the world wide web.@Damac: Thank YouTzim78 (talk) 18:36, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for those links. I had done my own searches – in German sources as that was his native language and the language that he generally published in – and could find no examples of "Franx Xaver Landerer" before his 1885 obituaries, which generally referred to him as FXL (the obituary in the US source your provided are based on a German one, which was republished in quite a number of journals at the time). Here's a German Swiss one.
But Landerer himself published as "Xaver Landerer" and I can't find one example where he refers to himself as FXL.
In a matriculation index/record of the University of Munich, published in 1872, he's listed as "Xaver Landerer" in the list of Kandidaten in 1831/32 (p. 208). And in an alphabetical index of all students at the University of Munich in 1831/32, he's listed as "Xaver Landerer". Also, in an 1832 list of members of the Society of Pharmacy Students of Munich, he's also listed as Xaver Landerer. Similarly, we also have an 1832 publication in Buchner's Repertorium of a prized essay he wrote. Again, he's Xaver Landerer.
And in every publication of his or referring to him from the 1830s to the 1880s, that is, until his obituary, he's Xavier Landerer.
Also, in this 1883 directory of German experts in minerology, he is named as "Xaver Landerer" (and we also get a DOB for him).
For the reasons above, I believe that that “Franz” was inserted erroneously into his name in his 1885 obituary and that mistake has been repeated since. In any case, he never used “Francis”, so surely his Wikidata entry should reflect and respect that.
By all means note the variations of his name in the "also known as" section, but his Wikidata and Wikipedia entries should be Xaver Landerer (WP:COMMONNAME).
[Note: another account, which claims to have his DOB, refers to him as Xaver-Hans Landerer. There's also the Xaver Joannes Landerer camp. Damac (talk) 13:43, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank You for the insight and the research. I solely put his full named based on the research I did but if it is erroneous and not his actual name it should be changed on wikipedia. Dating back to the 1850s there was a priest that was called Franz Xaver Landerer but the mention of Franz the pharmacist begins after, coupled with the fact that his publications never used Franz it is a safe assertion that the media did this in error. Thank You again for your work..@Damac:Tzim78 (talk) 15:48, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • The name was changed to reflect his correct name. The page was also corrected. Thanks Again!
