Achas a tua edição melhorou o artigo?

Isaac Cuenca

Why did you edit my text to appear in the past tense when it hasn't even happened yet? It is a future event that will not take place until March, yet you have changed my text to make it seem as though it has happened in the past. (I am referring to the usage of his Nr. 28 Shirt) Also why remove the sub-section when it is the longest paragraph on the players biography? He is currently playing for Ajax, and this is not a past event. If you want to edit it in the future I don't mind, but you should have left the tense as it was, because as you present the situation is misleading, since it has not even happened yet. Don't let anything/anyone get you down! Regarding Jorge Jesus, I think your version is better as it adds more sources and has more-neutral wording; if you and the other user cannot agree then you should use the article talk page to come to an agreement. GiantSnowman 16:09, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Re:Güiza

Hi, I've seen your messages. As I explained in the edit, the ref style used will give the same outcome in the references section that a cite news/web template – that is the reason behind the quotation marks for example. When there is not used a cite web parameter in the first place, I sometimes do it "manually" when I do a cleanup of refs, because it's faster than to write all the parameters – but, like I mentioned, it will look exactly the same as if you use the parameters.

Regarding the last message LFP.es says three goals, and I consider this to be the official stats (Football Database also says three goals.) Also you wrote that the LFP page don't work – I don't understand this; it works here at least. Maybe it's your browser(?).

And it is true that I didn't change any stats, but I changed the dates to today's date, so that's why I wrote "Updated stats". Also I would recommend to keep all the sources for his club stats – I used them all to verify/correct the numbers a couple of weeks ago.

Also the Getafe current squad at bottom of the page should be hidden, because Getafe is not the club he currently plays for.

Regarding the original title and translated title; if you have a translated title you don't need to have the original title as well – you don't need to have both, in my opinion. That just takes (often) a lot of unnecessary space. – Terje Christiansen (talk) 01:54, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi again, as I wrote earlier; according to lfp.es he scored three goal, not four. Football Database also says three.

Spanish is not my first language, but I do believe that "pescuezo" can mean throat in some sentences – and "to slit Nuria Bermúdez's neck" sounds a bit awkward.

Regarding ref#9; fair enough, but it look like you get three of these quotations marks (") then.

Regarding "CLUB stuff first, then NATIONAL TEAM stuff, then awards". This is a matter of opinion; personally I don't agree on that order – I would prefer to have it "backwards" of that. But this is not very important, so it can be like that in this case if that is important to you.

Regarding "club names IN FULL in storyline". Again; matter of opinion. I don't agree here either, I believe this is uneccesarry. Why not use the common name instead of writing it in full? I think that is preferable – and I think the majority agrees on that. – Terje Christiansen (talk) 13:12, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi, regarding the refs in STATISTICS; since these refs are not articles, only pages, they don't really have a title – and to write, for example "D.K. GÜIZA", doesn't give you much information about the ref, so I prefer to write what the ref "is about" as the title – so that's my explanation for the titles.

And The ref with the title "Spanish League stats"; I changed that to "league stats", to be more correct + some other improvements on those refs – and I reinstated the BDFUTBOL.com link, since I find it constructive to include it; as I wrote earlier, I used them all to verify/correct the numbers a couple of weeks ago.

I don't think there should be a limit in number of refs; you should have as many as you need to get the numbers right, I believe.

Yeah I should have compressed all the clubs to be consistent. But just to make it clear; it is only the "FC"'s, "CD"'s, "CF"'s, etc. I really want to remove. In my opinion these are unnecessary to include "on the layout". – Terje Christiansen (talk) 15:17, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Okay, I'll leave the BDfutbol link alone, even though I don't think it is needed when there is a link to National Football Teams right under it – but fair enough, it can stay. The explanation on the UEFA issue would be that I treat UEFA as publisher, but UEFA.com as work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Terje Christiansen (talkcontribs) 19:36, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Vasco, hope you're well. Regarding KARLSHRUHER, yes that is just the opinion/essay of one user, but it makes sense, hence why it has been informally adopted by FOOTY members. If you disagree then feel free to start a discussion at FOOTY about it. Regarding pcupdates, either date format is fine, as long as it is accurate and consistent throughout the article! Hi, thanks for your messages The Barcelona spell re Pinto was originally loan but the deal was made permenant. Therefor it is one contract and should be listed as such. This is different for example if a player is loaned then returns then purchased by the loaning club - there would be two contracts - therefor two deals and separate. OK.

ps I didn't reply to the first message because I didn't have anything to say sorry to cause offence, and thanks for clarifying the matter.

Templates & Tiago Ilori

Hi Vasco, sorry, I don't have much Wikipedia time these days - or at least as much as I want! You can take the templates to WP:TFD, and regarding Tiago Ilori, if the source describes the player committing an error, maybe quote directly rom the source? GiantSnowman 09:57, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

If you want to TFD an article, instructions can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion. However, reading the talk page, if you believe that the templates are merely out-of-date, then it does not take long to update them, and you should head down that route. Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for multilingual cooperation as well as vandalism fighting. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:GiantSnowman submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Always Learning (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) as Editor of the Week - by no means 100% perfect, he is certainly the type of editor that Wikipedia could do with many more of. He strives to expand and improve articles as much as possible, and he fights vandalism on a daily basis. His knowledge of English, Portuguese, Spanish and French means he is able to drawn on a wide variety of sources, as well as communicate with editors who only speak those languages, and would perhaps otherwise remain secluded and dismissed for their inability to communicate. He will always try to work in conjunction with other editors to improve an article, and I cannot recommend him highly enough for this honour. GiantSnowman 10:28, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

IP edits

Hello. To be honest, I don't see a problem with that anon's recent edits. I'm not in a position to see whether it's the same editor as you've had problems with before, and if Giant Snowman suggested waiting to see if there was any need to take action, I don't see anything in their recent edits to suggest now is the time to act. As to Inter Milan/Internazionale, the opening sentence of our article says: "Football Club Internazionale Milano S.p.A., commonly referred to as Internazionale or simply Inter, and colloquially known as Inter Milan outside of Italy" (my italics). Internazionale is a common usage, and there are plenty of editors here who tend to use it in preference to Inter Milan. Not sure it's worth making a fuss about, but that's purely my personal opinion. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:50, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Vasco. If I have inserted UEFA.com as both publisher and work, that is just a mistake. As I have previously said, I treat UEFA as publisher, and UEFA.com as work.

  • About the VI.nl external link I find it a bit unnecessary to have, but it can stay, no problem.
  • I still think you have a misunderstanding regarding the PC/NT update; they are not for when he last played a game, but when the stats were last updated/checked. Happy weeknend to you too – Terje Christiansen (talk) 16:55, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi there AL, it's the talk-page stalker speaking. If you want a third opinion, I agree with "TJ" - while non-english links can be used as citations, they shouldn't be used as external links (in most cases) per WP:NONENGEL. And the PC/NT update is for when you last updated the stats, not for when the last match was played. Happy weekend. Mentoz86 (talk) 17:03, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

About the "2010" instead of "2010–". It is true that he hasn't retired, but he have only played one game and that was in 2010, so he is not active on the team, so I am of the opinion that the dash can be removed. If he should play again it can be restored. But this issue is not so important, only a small detail. – Terje Christiansen (talk) 23:14, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Infobox datestamps

Hello. As it says at the bottom of the infobox, the |club-update= and |nationalteam-update= parameters are for dates or dates/times at which the stats are "correct as of". Using a bare date on which the player last played has two disadvantages:

  1. neither reader nor visiting editor can tell if the stats are up-to-date without going through the sources (if any), particularly if the last game was some time ago; and
  2. neither reader nor visiting editor can tell if the stats are before the match played on that date or after (OK, they could guess, but as this is an encyclopedia, we shouldn't be forcing our readers to guess what we mean).

Hope this helps, cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:06, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Javier Patiño again

Hello. Can't see much wrong with it, personally. Agree that it shouldn't say Spanish-Filipino in the opening sentence, because that construct doesn't have a clear meaning. Year in image captions and Persondata

Hi, I'm curious as to why you think years in image captions are not relevant? I think including the year is important in providing basic information of the image and adding a bit of context. I'm sure most readers would find it a little odd to see the year not being displayed. Also, in this edit you removed the subject's full name from the 'Alternative names' parameter of the Persondata. Hello. I've reverted that user's changes to the featured article John Wark, and again suggested that they use edit summaries. Wouldn't it have been quicker and easier for both of us if you'd done that yourself? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:28, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello Vasco

We communicated lots previously regarding edits on Rabiu Ibrahim and you have been great in looking after his profile.

I know you are good at keeping an eye on profiles so i thought to contact you regarding a Nigerian international Gabriel Reuben. A blogger, fake journalist who writes on a website called allnigeria soccer is out to ruin the reputation of a player and has written a false article about him and used it as bases to place the article on wikipedia. The player transferred as a free agent but the editor and his friends in Nigeria are trying to claim that monies are owed from the transfer through private arrangements they had between themselves and the players previous club called kano pillars. The Kano pillars chairman has spoken publicly and stated that the player was a free agent but they have somehow put in the players wiki profile that there was a transfer saga! a: there is no transfer saga reported between the two clubs (i.e. the club he just left and the club he joined) b: There are no quotes from reliable people just idiots lying (as a matter of fact the player has never played for pioneer academy and there is no source online to substantiate the claim that he played for pioneer) c: This should not be on the players profile anyway because it has nothing to do with the player d: the transfer has been approved by relevant association and fifa and the player has joined his club e: the same website reported that the player had a bad knee and failed his medicals due to a bad knee

below some articles from renowned sources

http://sport.stv.tv/football/clubs/kilmarnock/219810-kilmarnock-sign-gabriel-reuben-and-papa-idris-on-three-year-deals/ TV understands the Rugby Park side have gained work permit endorsements from the Scottish FA for the pair, who are both free agents having left Kano Pillars earlier in the season.

http://www.goal.com/en-za/news/4622/africa/2013/04/02/3874578/midfielder-reuben-gabriel-set-to-make-debut-for-kilmarnock Meanwhile, Kano Pillars chairman Abba Galadima has disclosed that the two players left the club as free agents since their contracts expired.

http://www.supersport.com/football/nigeria/news/130402/Pillars_duo_pen_three_year_deals Chairman of Kano Pillars, Abba Galadima told supersport.com that the contracts of both players with the club ended last season, which made them free agents.

I dont want to start deleting things just for them to go back and add it again.

What should we do Vasco? would you please monitor the page for us?

Used

is fine in that context. It doesn't have a negative connotation, and the simpler word is often the better choice. See wiktionary for more info. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:03, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

With respect, I wouldn't know what "being fairly used" meant either. Sorry, Struway2 (talk) 16:28, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
"He was rarely used that season" or "he was frequently used as a second striker" I can understand, but I genuinely don't know what meaning of "fairly" would fit... Struway2 (talk) 16:39, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
In that sense, I think you can only use it to modify an adjective, as in "the pitch was fairly muddy", or another adverb, as in "he was used fairly frequently". It doesn't work with just a verb. But in an encyclopedia, usages like "quite" or "fairly" or "not very" are probably better avoided as imprecise, coming across as personal opinion. Might be preferable to say how many or what proportion of games he started or appeared in. hope this helps, Struway2 (talk) 17:57, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi AL, thanks, tudo bem, I hope you're also well. The edit you linked slipped through, although I have the article on my watchlist. Ángel María Villar stats

They might be correct, but they might not be either. And per WP:V what matters is that content is sourced, not whether it's correct or not. Obviously we would prefer content to be correct, hence the need for providing a citation. We can't just assume that whoever added the stats did so in good faith or using accurate sources. I've come across plenty of instances where unsourced stats have later been proven to be false/inaccuarate when checked using a reliable source. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:50, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Further, the IP that added the stats, 88.89.136.46 (talk · contribs), has a history of unconstructive editing. See this edit for instance, where they removed referenced statistics from the infobox. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:56, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Yes, it is always disappointing when users do not communicate, but we cannot force them, only encourage them. GiantSnowman 15:01, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi AL. Good to hear from you again, and I agree that it is very disappointing that Alexanderalgrim knows English well enough to interact with other users when he wanted to create an article in 2010, but he was unwilling to interact when asked (many, many times) to meet our notability guidelines in 2011. Your edit summaries

Please read Help:Edit summary. It's about time you grasped that edit summaries are to describe honestly what your edit has done. They aren't a convenient vehicle for you to insult other editors, whether they're vandals or not, to belittle their level of English or competence in Wiki-skills, or to use obscenities. Stop it. Struway2 (talk) 11:38, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Vasco, this is prticualry bad. Please restrain yourself in edit summaries; if you continue, you might be blocked for personal attacks / incivility. GiantSnowman 14:11, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
I completely understand your frustrations and empathise with your medical condition - but I'm afraid that is no excuse for the edit summaries. If an article is vandalised, simply revert with the summary "reverting vandalism" or "removing vandalism" or similar - and then warn the editor per WP:WARN. If they continue, report to WP:AIV or come to me or another Admin for assistance, it means they will probably get blocked quicker, meaning your Wiki-life is easier in the long run! GiantSnowman 14:48, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
I added a reference for Nélson Oliveira's place of birth because it was unreferenced. As is a fair bit of that page. Nothing to do with vandalism, other than my attention being drawn to the article by your over-reaction. Struway2 (talk) 14:56, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Schaaf honours

Good day.

I don't really see the point in not having runner-up for league when there is runner-up for all other competitions; but okay. Also the honours was listed chronologically, and I didn't change the order – it was the same before my edit. And I'm not aware that a consensus has been reached regarding the numbers, but this matter is not that important for me, so it's okay anyway; even though I believe it makes for easier reading when there are multiple years, or when there is both victories and runner-ups listed. If for example a reader wants to know how many times a person or a club has won a tournament it's easier if you have a number indicating this so the reader doesn't need to count every years – it's faster, especially if there is a a lot of years won. – Terje Christiansen (talk) 12:46, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Re: Pablo Rodríguez (Spanish footballer born 1985)

Hey AL, Thank you for taking this article to my attention. I will take a more sterner approach to the page and really put an eye on it. As for my last edit, that was a mistake which I will make sure won't happen again. Cheers mate. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 23:48, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Frustration

Depends what you mean by "comes and destroys everything". Yes, of course I feel frustration if another editor comes along and fills a decent article with their own personal interpretations, for instance, or adds a load of unsourced or trivial material, or insists on formatting stuff contrary to MoS or whatever. Anyone would. I find it really difficult explaining to well-meaning editors why they shouldn't be doing whatever it is, without offending them or risking driving them away. But that isn't vandalism. Vandalism is (usually) easy to deal with, because it doesn't usually require personal interaction. You revert, and warn using the templated warnings, and if they keep on, report at WP:AIV, or if there are a lot of different vandals at the same time, like at Robert Lewandowski yesterday, get the page protected at WP:RPP. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:43, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Overlinking

Hi AL, and thanks for your good work on the English Wikipedia. Please not that, unlike WP.pt, there's a code of practice concerning what shouldn't be linked. This includes years, dates, centuries, the names of commonly known countries, and items such as "car crash" and "cigarette". As the first WP:PILLAR says, WP is not a dictionary. Readers are expected to have a basic knowledge of English words. And linking selectively makes it more likely that readers will actually click on a high-value link.

Thanks for your understanding, and do ask if you need me to answer any questions. Tony (talk) 02:55, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi guys, regarding the intro to articles, ideally it should read something like: "is an English [[association football|footballer]] who plays as a [[Defender (association football)|defender]]" - nationality not linked per WP:OVERLINK, and 'footballer' and 'position' as two seperate links. That make sense? GiantSnowman 17:39, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi AL,

If you mean this URL, I couldn't find any information there that he was chosen for a historical eleven of Borussia Mönchengladbach. I can't even confirm that Mönchengladbach had ever chosen such an XI, so I've moved the reference to another spot in the article and added one for his ranking in Mönchengladbach's all-time scorers list. --Jaellee (talk) 16:25, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

"Bis vor zwei Jahren habe ich auch in der Weisweiler-Elf von Mönchengladbach gespielt" means "Until two years ago I also played for the Weisweiler-Elf of Mönchengladbach". The Weisweiler-Elf (site is unfortunately only in German) is a Traditionsmannschaft (I don't know the English translation for it – I think All Stars Team could be right) of former Gladbacher footballers which is named in honor of Hennes Weisweiler. As the Weisweiler-Elf was founded in 1991 and Weisweiler died in 1983, he couldn't have played for that team. Lots of German Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs have such teams who often play for charity purposes and the attendance is coming to see the heroes of their childhood/youth. --Jaellee (talk) 18:29, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I hope you'll root for Bayern in the final. (-: --Jaellee (talk) 19:16, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

César Azpilicueta

Considering the article length I think the lead needs to be longer than you've changed it to but a little shorter than it was. I personally don't see any problem mentioning that he came through the Osasuna youth system, the number of appearances he made, what competitions he's won, the international youth levels he's represented etc. I'd go with a slightly trimmed version of the previous lead. Afterall, we can amend the lead over time to reflect the progression of his career, so certain details can be removed at a later date when they're less pertinent. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 18:51, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

I'd argue his youth international career is possibly more relevant thus far than his senior career (60 caps across the youth levels v. one cap for the senior team). I'd include both, and would mention the former if only briefly with something along the lines of "He has been capped across various youth levels..."). Whether or not appearing for youth international teams is in its own right an inference of notability isn't really relevant when discussing content, what matters is including what is noteworthy about the player's career. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 19:39, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Non-English External links.

Hi there AL. As you might have noticed, I stalk a couple of talk-pages, so after reading one of your posts I couldn't resist removing futbolme.com from Michu's External links section. WP:NONENGEL states that External links should be in English only, unless there is a really good reason to have a non-English link (like an official site or something similar). I'll see you around :) Cheers, Mentoz86 (talk) 20:29, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

I don't know why it is like this, but as you say, these are present in a lot of articles. When someone actually does the work in removing those links that are against policy, we shouldn't use a lot of energy on adding them back, should we? Mentoz86 (talk) 20:45, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi AL,

the title "Verwechselt!" is a bit of a pun because in German it can either mean "mixed something up" or "made an error with a substitution". So I think it is difficult to translate it in a way that contains this pun. Maybe "Misplaced!" would be better, but you'd have to ask a native English speaker for a better translation. I remember that Christoph Daum made this fatal error, but I forgot who the guy was he sent on the pitch (he obviously didn't leave a big impression).

I watched the match yesterday and I'm quite optimistic. If the Bayern reserve can hold a 1–1 with only ten players against Dortmund, then a team with Ribéry, Robben, Schweinsteiger, Lahm etc. should have a good chance against the best team Dortmund can field. I hope that Mario Gómez will stay in Munich because he is really a very good striker – only this year he was injured for a long time and Mandžukić got ahead of him. But I don't hope that we have again a penalty shootout, the one last year was terrible. --Jaellee (talk) 21:12, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

I really, really hope that you don't have to eat a hat, but if you have to buy one, try perhaps this model. Made from chocolate, it should at least sweeten the day. --Jaellee (talk) 22:35, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi AL, thanks for your reply. I don't think its vandalism, the reference provided for his descent is from a Goal.com article from 2009. I think Goal.com is the one to blame for misinformation in this case. Also, the Nélson Oliveira article was not vandalism either. A reputable Egyptian football website was hoaxed by someone pretending to be Nélson Oliveira, and in the interview he claimed that he was part Egyptian and born in Egypt. The website published the interview but after word got out, the website retracted the interview and admitted their mistake. Here's the article admitting their mistake: The Curious Case of Nelson ‘Ramy’ Oliveira, if you're interested in reading. Take care. TonyStarks (talk) 23:06, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

I see that both are used, so you have a valid point here, and I accept how the article is now, even though I prefer to write 'Celta Vigo' and 'Real Oviedo'. Regarding the "sterile" bit, I didn't think it was POV; I just didn't like the sentence. Regards – Terje Christiansen (talk) 10:25, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Nelson Oliveira etc

I can't make Riki's Depor appearances anywhere near 213, let alone 215, either from BDfutbol or from commercial sites. Perhaps you could check it. Anons do still get the orange bar. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:28, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

The point is that you were getting a touch aggressive about anons editing the stats wrongly – "Don't forget, if you chose to revert me you'll be inserting his wrong reversion." – yet you'd blithely rolled back to a version that was as wrong as theirs. Please slow down a bit and check the figures before assuming a) that all anons are vandals and b) that a previous version, even it was yours, was right. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:14, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
The point I'm making is not to make assumptions. If you think a set of stats are wrong, then checking what they should be and correcting them, with a neutral edit summary – "league stats only in infobox", or "fixing club stats" – is a much better approach than rolling back to a random set of stats just because of who made the edit. A few seconds spent checking is much better for the encyclopedia (and the blood pressure) than over-reacting to an editor who doesn't understand or won't co-operate with how things are supposed to work. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:00, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

I can only assume the bot picks up on the word "pubalgia", which is dangerously close to naughty bits... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:10, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm not convinced, yet. Honours

Hi Vasco, we should only add honours that have been confirmed by reliable sources. No sources, no inclusion. GiantSnowman 18:23, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

If a source says "John Smith, the assistant manager" won an honour, then we should probably include it on Wikipedia. GiantSnowman 19:18, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Pepe (footballer born 1983)

Sorry to hear that. But I'm of the understanding that in cases of ambiguity, it is best to not include a nationality in the opening sentence of the lead, and to explain their nationality later on in the lead. So, I'd go with "is a professional footballer" in the opening sentence and later on would include something like "Born in Brazil, Pepe is a Portugal international.". That's how I've been doing it for a few years now, one example being Andre Boucaud, who was born in England and played internationally for Trinidad & Tobago. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:16, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Reverting infobox changes

Hello. If the user correctly updates the stats, and updates the datestamp to the date of the last match played, the only thing wrong with that is we're supposed to have a datestamp after the last match played, whether it includes a time or not. An awful lot of editors on here do exactly the same, some out of bloodymindedness, and most because they don't know any better. It could be pretty disheartening for an editor who's making an effort to get stuff right when they just get blindly reverted. I assume you're checking the source for each player's stats before reverting them, to know whether they're right or wrong, so wouldn't it be easier just to change the date to one that fits the stats?

As to Ayoze Díaz Díaz, I imagine they're just keeping it up to date.

As to assistant manager or whatever honours, I wouldn't bother adding them in normal circumstances. Doubtless the text will talk about their contribution. But if the assistant or youth coach or whoever it is has made a significant contribution to something, like winning a national youth tournament or whatever, then I would include them. hope this helps, Struway2 (talk) 18:08, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

I've left a message for Alex about PROD/AFD. GiantSnowman 17:34, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

A few days ago, I ran a search on José Mourinho and Alberto Toril concerning resere team& its players. I wish that manu hire Mourinho aka The not so smart One! I don't think he was hired to league championships, domestic cups or domestic supercups but European championships. They love him in England so they can have him!! Had about nine matches against barça and how many wins? Madrid needs a coach who has coach the cantera or at least believe in the system. I would to see what Aitor Karanka can do but he's not considered a star coach by Don Presidente. I don't know who is charge of signings for the reserves but some of the players for Castilla are very lacking. I don't see the purpose of buying guys and they don't play! Fran Sol wasn't good enough but Quini and Jota are?! Raul17 (talk) 00:08, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

So when Mourinho was at Milan, they attacked him because he's Portugese? Before he came to Madrid, I thought he was a good coach not knowing the baggage he carries with him. I always think that at big clubs like Madrid, it always an honor to coach there, but not The Ungrateful One. He seems to think that Madrid is lucky to have his services!! As a coach, I don't care if I like you or not, but I have to put in the players who will give me the best shot at winning. Starting Adán over Casillas that match really show he's still barça at heart!! Don´t like Modric pushing Özil from his central attacking spot or using Essien at rightback (which is okay against 2nd division/relegated threatened teams not European cup teams). Casemiro & Mendes didn't deserve first team calls-up; Fabinho was out of need, but I have no ideal about Llorente though (whom I like) being listed in subs' list. Aléx, Jesé were buried. I always thought that Jorge Casado should have gotten a look. The way The Unbeliever was in his call-ups, I'm surprised that Rubén Sobrino get a shot!! Thanks!!Raul17 (talk) 01:44, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Sorry, Vasco, but I'm not going to fight your content disputes for you. If someone commits an act of vandalism then do what Giantsnowman repeatedly advises you: revert and warn using the templated user warnings, and if the behaviour continues and the warnings pass the top level, report to WP:AIV. If it's a content dispute, discuss the matter with the editor, or if you get nowhere, start a discussion at the talk page of whatever the article is, and advertise the discussion at WT:FOOTY in a neutral manner.

And an editor blocked for edit-warring who then got another short block for editing anon to "avoid scrutiny", once, a year ago, isn't even remotely comparable to the site-banned long-term abuser you referred to at my talk page :-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:29, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

RE: Valeron

Hi there,

CA Osasuna – I don't know about Osasuna, but with FC Barcelona, for example, "FC" is probably inlcued because there already is an article with the name Barcelona (about the city); so even though the common name for the club is Barcelona the article is named FC Barcelona, because just 'Barcelona' is already "taken". The same with Liverpool F.C. for example.

Football Database – I write .eu because there are two sites with the same name; one with .com and one with .eu. Also I changed the accessdate to 16 May because that was the last time I retrieved information from that ref, but I not haven't done it this time.

"?" – The question marks are there because those stats are not sure to be correct. I was not able to find any refs confirming those stats are correct, so the stats are uncertain.

The Deportivo profile external link – I didn't want to have it as an external link since it's in Spanish and not too many English-speaking people understand what it says. Also it seems to bee quite outdated, having not been updated since 2007 it seems. But it can probably stay since you think it should be there.

And regarding the NFT external link I don't think it's needed, and also the stats are not 100% correct on that site. Regards – Terje Christiansen (talk) 20:04, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

No reply

I took note of what you said, although it was extremely nit-picky, and was planning to use it in later edits. Bear in mind, I did not write the whole Diego Costa page and simply wrote the Spanish names once or twice, unaware of how many times they had been previously used. Sorry that everything I do or don't do seems to be an attack against you. I didn't know that I had to reply.Rupert1904 (talk) 01:09, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Also I would appreciate it if you didn't criticize my Wikipedia editing methods with other people, I thought the point of wiki was to expand knowledge for viewers not to jab others. I didn't know we were supposed to include an accessdate, I was never made aware of that before your attack, and if you look at my most recent contributions I have added that into the reference markup. Rupert1904 (talk) 01:16, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. And I've started to use the accessdate as you can see. Rupert1904 (talk) 01:50, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

No need to delete your comment from the other contributor's talk page. I understand your point and see where you are coming from. We were just on different wavelengths. But hopefully I can continue making correct edits on wiki and you won't need to let me know what to do in the future. Best Rupert1904 (talk) 02:11, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Vítor Pereira

Hi Vasco, looks fine to me, I have just done a bit of formatting clean up. As for the vandals, all you need to do is not let them get to you - revert, warn, and report. If the page is still targeted, we can protect and/or block. GiantSnowman 16:03, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

  • Only one reference in this entire section:

Born in Espinho, Pereira only played amateur football, and retired at the age of 29. He started managing on junior level, and his first head coach experience arrived midway through the 2004–05 season, when he was appointed at A.D. Sanjoanense in the third division.

Subsequently Pereira worked with S.C. Espinho in the same level, being fired with ten games left in his second campaign, and returning to F.C. Porto's juniors for a further season. In 2008, he returned to head coaching again, with C.D. Santa Clara in division two, leading the Azores side to the third position in his first year and the fourth in the second, on both occasions narrowly missing out on top flight promotion.

In the summer of 2010, Pereira left Santa Clara to become assistant manager to Andre Villas-Boas at Porto. On 21 June 2011, following the head coach's departure to Chelsea, he was promoted to first-team manager,[1] winning his first official match – and title – against Vitória de Guimarães, for the season's Portuguese Supercup.

Despite a less than stellar performance both in Europe – with Porto being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the group stage and in the UEFA Europa League round-of-32 – and in the Portuguese Cup, Pereira lead the club to the league title in his first season in charge.

Hi AL,

I'm fine – waiting for the final. The reference you mentioned was really about washing machines (no Germanism at all). The article tells (among others) the story of the second leg match in the first round of the 1988–89 European Cup: Werder Bremen vs. BFC Dynamo Berlin 5–0. Bremen lost the first leg in East Berlin 0–3 and so their sporting director Willi Lemke had an idea to distract the Dynamo Berlin players: During a city tour, they made a stop in a large department store where all the wonders of capitalism were exhibited: washing machines, VCRs, Coca-Cola, etc. All these things were difficult to come by in socialist East Germany (West Germany's "Klassenfeind" – class enemy) and the article claims that the distraction worked as the the Berlin players were nervous and not focused on football and therefore lost the match. "Goals in the mist" refers to another match (Werder Bremen vs Spartak Moskau 6–2 on 4 November 1987). So the sentence literally means what I wrote in the translation. --Jaellee (talk) 16:07, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Saludos. --Raymond Cruise (talk) 17:21, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Saludos. --Raymond Cruise (talk) 17:35, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Infobox datestamp

Hello. When you're going round updating player infoboxes once the current season's finished, please would you use a datestamp after the end of the season. That way the reader can tell that the player's stats are complete to the end of the season. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:41, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

I didn't ask you to use an automatic datestamp, though I can't see what's so difficult about typing ~~~~~ instead of a date. I suggested that when you are updating to the end of the season, you type a datestamp after the end of the season, rather than one from days or weeks before the season ended, as you did (for example) at Lorenzo Melgarejo. It really isn't more difficult to type "27 May 2013" than "00:00, 7 May 2013 (UTC)". That way, the reader can see that the stats are correct up to the end of the season, rather than thinking they've haven't been updated for the last couple of matches. It's got nothing to do with edit summaries, it's to do with conveying helpful and accurate information to anyone reading the article. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:03, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Seydou Keita

Look, you clearly don't even get how NFT is operated. International match stats doesn't just magically appear on that website. The people who operate it need to have the actual line-ups (complete line-ups) for the matches to be added. If they don't, the data isn't added and therefore stats for certain players for certain countries will be INACCURATE! One of those countries is MALI! PLEASE understand this! You can go to Giantsnowman or whoever else, I'm not doimg anything wrong. Thank you very much. Mas y mas (talk) 05:07, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Image captions

are to convey helpful information to anyone looking at the image. When the picture was taken tells the reader whether it's recent, so that's what the subject looks like now, or whether it shows them ten years ago, or whatever it is. How on earth does adding "in 2012" to a caption that's little more than half the width of the image "needlessly enlarge the infobox"? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:27, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

The caption is there to inform the reader about the image, so that's where brief information relevant to the content of the image should appear. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:03, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Infobox datestamp

is for a date, or date and time, at which the stats are correct, which means you need to use a date, or date and time, after the last match included in those stats. That's what the little words at the bottom of the infobox " correct as of " mean. If you use the date of the last match the player appeared in, as you did at Borja Oubiña, then the reader would have to guess whether the stats were correct as of before the match played on that date or after. OK, they could make an educated guess, but an encyclopedia shouldn't be making its readers guess what it means by something. Hope this helps, Struway2 (talk) 18:39, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

But if the transfer had been completed, Man City would have confirmed it themselves. And the BBC refer to the signing as still being "prospective". Mattythewhite (talk) 17:18, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

re: Sock vandal

Hey AL. Thanks for the warning, though it seems weird that someone would use sock puppeting for such a trivial thing as trying to change a season article's manual of style. He seems to have given up though, so no harm done. Mind if I ask how you knew he was a sock puppet?

By the way, thanks for mentioning me to User:Mattythewhite. Wikipedia now gives you a notification when you are referenced on a talk page, so it was broadcasted to me, the first thing I saw when I logged in. For the record, unlike many on this website I am a sporadic user, who can work on things for hours, or sometimes barely do anything for several days. Just because I haven't gotten round to replying to you barely 24 hours after you left a message does not mean that I did not either care or appreciate the sentiment, and does not mean I didn't intend to reply at all. I can't say I was exactly happy to see you castigating me to another user for my failure to reply but I guess I'll survive. Considering that only a day earlier you'd said that my taking the time speak to Lejlabrahimi I thought I'd earned a little better, but I guess not. Falastur2 Talk 20:41, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Eh, it's fine. I'm sorry myself - I can be quite prickly, and often am quick to take things the wrong way on the internet, what with its complete lack of voice tone. I'm sure we will work together again - you just need to remember with me that I'm incredibly sporadic. I do things when I feel the time is right, not necessarily the first time I decide they need to be done.
Keep up the good work. Falastur2 Talk 21:20, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

To inform the reader. Why would you want to make the reader to go through an infobox to work out when the picture was taken when adding something as simple as "in 2012" would make it easy for them? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:47, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

The accessdate parameter

is for the date the source was last accessed. Re the Sevilla FC website piece on Jesús Navas: I accessed it, this morning, to check what it said (and tweaked the prose accordingly) before restoring it to the article. Therefore an accessdate of today was correct. Matter of interest, how does 2 UEFA Cups and 2 Copas come to 6 major titles? Hope this helps, Struway2 (talk) 14:59, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

If you mean "he won 6 titles, and 2 of them were UEFA Cups, 2 of them were Copas, and the other 2 were something else", you'd use "including". "Namely" means "which is/are", so if you use "namely", you'd need to list all 6 of the 6 titles, so "he won 6 major titles, namely 2 UEFA Cups, 2 Copas, a Supercopa and a European Supercup". cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:10, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Iago Aspas

Protected for one week. However, it seems to me he hasn't actually signed for Liverpool yet. Despite the headline of 'Liverpool sign Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas for £9m', the Telegraph article states he has yet to pass a medical at Liverpool, meaning the transfer can't have been completed yet. And I know how stressful this kind of thing can be, but I don't think you're helping anyone using a term like 'Scumbag' in your edit summary... Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 21:00, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

You're right to remove Transfermarkt, but it would be correct for BDFutbol to be used as a reference for the career stats table as the current ref (ESPN) doesn't cover his Celta B stats. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:59, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Vasco,

Re: Intro hullaballoo

Sorry, I was distracted with vandalism reverting/working on an article/blubbering through toothache and forgot you messaged me. Since I do little work on player articles that are subject to international transfers I don't come across this scenario very often (transfers between two English clubs can be completed as soon as each teams' season is over). A few possible suggestions could be made, like "...is a Spanish footballer who is contracted to Sevilla, but in July 2013 will transfer to Manchester City". Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 21:04, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Since he's pretty much signed and sealed as a Man City player I think it ought to be mentioned in the lead at some point. It could potentially be confusing for some readers, who might doubt that he's actually signing for Man City after taking a glance at the infobox and lead. Hello... First of all, I'd like to apologize for my recent reverts & edits. I don't want to either upset or offend you. But i must assure you that i made no change in the refferences section you added, and anyway i will never again deal with the player (since he left the team). In the other hand you must know that the team's official name is AEL 1964 FC (from March 2003) and not LARISSA FC (Larissa is as most of the people call the team, taken by the name of the city). Also in the player's bio you never mentioned or update his move to Greece or his stats the last two years of playing here. You must also know that i deal with the team for a long time and my refs are double checked (even from personal sources) and to report me to other fellow users is considered highly offfencive..Anyway my apologies once more and take care!!!

You seems to be right. But why Celta website use such a phrase in 2009: Eusebio reaccionó con la entrada de Iago Aspas, quien debutó esta temporada. (http://www.celtavigo.net/en/component/content/article/58-historico/219-el-celta-y-su-aficion-certifican-la-permanencia-180-en)? Arvedui89 (talk) 14:07, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for your help. When you translate from the language you don;t actually know, you can always loose the context. For example in Polish you can make only one debut in one team. First game in season is not a debut anymore. So for me this sentence meant "Aspas, who in this particular season made his debut (first game ever)". Great to know someone is reading those talk pages. :) Cheers, Arvedui89 (talk) 21:47, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Denis Cheryshev

Please read and understand WP:YEAR, which says "Ranges expressed using prepositions (from 1881 to 1886 or between 1881 and 1886) should not use en dashes (not from 1881–86 or between 1881–86)." This is why I changed the phrase "From 2010–2012, also in the third level," to "From 2010 to 2012, also in the third level,".

There is no need for a hyphen in "called up" in "Cheryshev was called up to the Russian national team for the first time on 6 November 2012"; phrasal verbs should not have a hyphen. That is why I removed it. Please do not revert changes by other editors to Wikipedia that are made in order to correct mistakes in punctuation or to achieve compliance with the MoS. You recently reverted the change I made to the stats regarding Antonio Puchades. See [2].

I was basing my information on the wonderful database held by CiberChe, [3]

Whereas on Wikipedia it said/says that Puchades got 256 caps for Valencia and netted four goals, in CiberChe it says 355 caps and netted seven goals. Furthermore, it shows stats on all seven goals (one in 48/49, four in 49/50, one in 50/51 and one in 53/54). Clicking on each link shows you details about each of those goals! Under the PJ section (Partidos Jugados) we see 355. Therefore, I believe you were wrong to revert my change.

Furthermore, he did play one game in 59/60 (his testimonial), which is why I changed the date there, but I am less bothered if you want to revert that item as a testimonial is a friendly. Tris2000 (talk) 11:50, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I haven't had chance yet to view your recent changes, but if you've added direct cites that should be good. No problem with foreign language sources, but not when there's a good English language source, but I don't recall deleting any of your refs just re-adding bdf. It is not the case that BDF is a 'link' per se. If it's cited it is acting as a ref and if it is just there for background it is a link i.e. further reading, but I've had this discussion with you many times. Things off your chest

Don't take it personally at the Iago Aspas article, lots of people ignore other editor's - there's nothing we can do, it's just a sad state of affairs. As for Kolins, it may well be him, or he may not 'understand' and just be ignoring. If he's talking politely and editing constructively then it's not a major issue, especially as the Kolins account appears to have been abandoned. If they were both editing at the same time, then it'd be a different story...hope you're well, anyway. GiantSnowman 19:22, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Visual editor

Hey Always Learning

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Honours

I personally usually only add title/cup victories as there is no disputing the place of these, but I'd support the inclusion of league finishes that resulted in a promotion. It's been discussed numerous times already but a single discussion at WT:FOOTY would be the best approach in garnering consensus. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 22:28, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

3rd place is not an issue, after all the Olympics has gold, silver & bronze. It is what reliable sources say! GiantSnowman 09:40, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
A newspaper or other trusted site saying a player has won an honour is enough. GiantSnowman 15:32, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
If a reliable source, such as The Independent, confirms that a player won a runner-up honour, then of course we need to include that in the article. GiantSnowman 15:50, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Honours

Just so you know, I haven't been ignoring you out of rudeness, I just moved back home a couple of days ago so I'm still settling in. As for honours, I really don't think we can base our decision about whether or not we include runners-up positions on one source, even if it is the Independent. Some sources will include runners-up spots, some won't, and we have to balance the two up, not just say "OK, some sources include runners-up, so that's good enough for us." – PeeJay 21:10, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Re:Churchill Brothers template

Hello. The reason I undid the edit is because whenever I see a squad template with the English and American clubs that has players with the same last name it is always in this format, M. Taylor and P. Taylor, instead of full names, Matt Taylor and Peter Taylor. With the Churchill Brothers template it was changed from T. Singh and A. Singh to Tomba Singh and Ajay Singh and I just went with what I knew. I did not realize that I was also undoing the names having to do with the Portugese players and that I am sorry for as I should have checked every edit before making the decision I did. I hope this clears everything up. Cheers. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 01:34, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Re:

Just look at the articles for any of the most researched football players on wikipedia (Messi, Ronaldo, etc etc). On their pages "International goals" is listed in the statistics section. I'm only trying to make football players' article have the same framework. Zastavafan76 (talk) 13:11, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

The problem is that your idea of compromise is for you to revert my edits and to subsequently ask me, "Hey, let's have a compromise." If you'll bear with me, I can explain to you why I tried to have the articles regarding Nejc Pecnik and other eastern European footballers modeled the way they were:

First of all, let me address your first request: "can you 1 - leave the INTERNATIONAL GOALS chart as a sub-section of the INT.CAREER section (it's not really a statistic); 2 - leave the PERSONAL section as the last thing in the articles (order should be CLUB CAREER, INTERNATIONAL CAREER, HONOURS, STATISTICS and PERSONAL LIFE)"

-All I'm trying to do is have articles of the football players I write about be modeled after the most completed articles on footballers. There is a general consensus that, when it comes to Wikipedia, players such as Zinedine Zidane, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Arjen Robben all have more "complete articles" written about themselves than do other players. In every article I just used as examples, as well as many many more, have a format in the following order: Early Life, Club Career, International Career, Style of Play, Outside Football (Subsection: Personal Life), Career Statistics (Subsection: International Goals), Honors, References. So when you tell me that you've seen "millions" (by which you mean maybe a few dozen at most) of articles with "International Goals" as a subsection in the International Career section of an article, that's not an excuse to try to expand that on developing articles of lower-profile athletes. If you feel like International Goals should change sections in the writing protocol of football players' articles, why don't you start with the most complete articles first before doing so on Nejc Pecnik? If you succeed, you will have changed the model on how to write an article on a football player on Wikipedia--and only then will I see that your edits should remain untouched. But when you're just doing this on raw articles about developing players all you accomplish is get in edit conflicts such as with myself.

Second of all, I noticed in the article for Nejc Pecnik, in the career statistics infobox at the top of the article you changed "Red Star Belgrade" to "Red Star". Honestly, I realize you had good intentions; most people know Red Star as the team from Belgrade rather than the one from France or Switzerland. But again, I'm trying to have as many articles as possible follow a same structure--that is, if one player's stat box has "Red Star", than all of Red Star's players AND former players should have it the same way. But if you've noticed, an overwhelming majority of players who have played for Red Star have "Red Star Belgrade" as opposed to Red Star in their statistic infoboxes on Wikipedia. It's actually a result of the six discussions that have taken place on the way Red Star's name should be displayed on English Wikipedia. Additionally, while Red Star may be assumed to be from Belgrade, taking the "Belgrade" name from the infobox is like taking "Manchester" away from an MU player's statbox so as to have written "United" instead of Manchester United. In the same way United is most familiar as the team from Manchester, Red Star is to Belgrade, yet on Wikipedia you probably know that in articles "Manchester United" is never written without "Manchester". Please understand the way I try to develop these articles on Balkan players. Zastavafan76 (talk) 02:32, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I never doubted you were telling the truth about how many articles you've seen with "International Goals" in the "International Careers" section. Likewise, I've seen many many articles with sections organized in different orders of sections, and they far outnumber articles the most complete articles such as the ones I listed above. But think about this: if there were many articles that were organized in a divergent and non-universal manner, and only a few which were organized in the more formal way and order, would you edit articles to match the "many" which lack the organizational finesse just because those kinds of articles are greater in number? Or would you rather try to have articles match the fewer, but the more formally written articles with the greatest amount of research and organization? I won't bother to emphasize my figurative questions, you're multi-lingual and intelligent so you can definitely understand my point. Sorry for not being more concise. Zastavafan76 (talk) 03:31, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Edit warring at Marc Muniesa

Hello Vasco, I wonder if you could do a favour both for me and probably for User:Uruguayriver. He seems to prefer your version of the Marc Muniesa article to Add92's, to the extent of reverting 3 times this afternoon, at which point I warned him about edit-warring and the three-revert rule, and posted to the talk page that repeatedly removing sourced info was well out of order. His response was to leave the sourced international section alone, but revert the rest. I know he's new, and English isn't his native language, so I don't want to be awkward, but if he goes on undoing other people's work without explanation, he will get himself blocked, either for edit-warring or for what people will perceive as vandalism. So if you could have a look at the message I left at his talk page and explain the problem in a way he'll understand, I'd be extremely appreciative. Thanks in advance, Struway2 (talk) 17:21, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you... though I don't think you needed to tell Uruguayriver not to edit that page; he's welcome to edit it, so long as he does it within the "rules". If we make an edit, we need to be able to justify it, and if challenged we need to be willing to justify it in discussion, to explain why the version we prefer is better than the "other" version, in terms of language, or accuracy, or usefulness of content, or compliance with WP guidelines, whatever it may be. And none of us are allowed to keep on blind reverting, not him, not you, not me, not GiantSnowman, not God almighty (well, maybe, but that's for another discussion ;-). cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:30, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
Indeed, my sincere apologies. Spanish I'll read myself and only use google translate to check I haven't made some dreadful mistake, but my Portuguese isn't that good, so I do go to the translator first, and then check it myself, though obviously this time I didn't... Though there's no reason why you should stop editing the page either, as above.

As to the lead section of articles, they're supposed to be a free-standing summary of the article: see WP:LEAD. So in general they probably ought to include a bit more detail than you tend to. But don't take it personally when people's views differ from yours; we're all here for the same purpose, which is to improve the encyclopedia for the benefit of the reader. This isn't with regard to Muniesa, by the way; I only reacted to the multiple removal of the sourced international career section, and genuinely have no view on the introduction or anything else because I haven't read it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:05, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Marc Munisea

Hi there, I have added some extra detail to his lead section but not as much as before. I think it is useful to included his injury as it is probably the main reason as to why he left Barcelona and signed for us! Thanks. --Add92 (talk) 22:28, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Walter Pandiani

What's an improvement that you expect to be changed? Just wondering, Struway2 (talk) 16:35, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

FWIW, Pandiani's last game was on the 18th, so by putting the 20th you did write a completely different date from that of his last game...

The point is, that if you're updating because the season's finished, then you need to put a date after the end of the season. Otherwise the reader can't tell that the stats are correct up to the end of the season. I really don't see what's difficult to understand about that. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:48, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

So you put a date/time in the approved format, and that date/time was after the end of the season, and you still carry on in your edit summary about expecting it to be changed? You've lost me, I'm afraid. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:13, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Not enough recent vandalism to justify protection, I'm afraid. GiantSnowman 08:13, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Infobox statistics "correct as of..."

When an editor brings a player's infobox stats up to date after the end of the football season, and quite correctly sets the |pcupdate= or |club-update= parameter to the date when they updated the stats, please understand that they made the update exactly how they're supposed to.

Please do not change it to some random date between the last match of the regular season and the playoffs, and in particular, please do not accompany such a change with a sarcastic edit summary, as you did with this edit to Julien Fernandes.

Thank you for your understanding. Struway2 (talk) 16:21, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Further, please don't accompany such a change with a misleading edit summary, such as "Minor in spacings", as you did with this edit to Dani López (footballer born 1983). Thank you. Struway2 (talk) 16:27, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

You're missing the point. The |pcupdate= dates were already correct. They didn't need changing. Struway2 (talk) 16:51, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Vasco, ideally we should use ~~~~~ when updating to show time and date after a match. If a match is played on 12 July then that bare date is, as you rightly say, too ambiguous, and in the past has led to too many issues with well-meaning editors adding or taking away games and goals. However, if a match is played on 12 July and stats are updated on 13 July then I would say it's fine to use that bare date as it can be easily verified that the stats are up to the previous day's match - though in all circumstances the five tildes are prefeable. GiantSnowman 11:16, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
It's the same as signing your talk page post - four tildes gives you a talk page signature, five tildes gives you an infobox date and time! GiantSnowman 14:07, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
If my appeal to GiantSnowman has finally encouraged you to accept that the |pcupdate= parameter needs to contain something other than the bare date of the player's last game, then it achieved something. And yes, writing the date you make the edit is absolutely fine, so long as that date is after the date of the last game included in the stats. That's what most people do, whether they do it with tildes or with letters and numbers. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:52, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Your recent editing history at Javier Patiño shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.

To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. See BRD for how this is done. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. GiantSnowman 15:11, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Javier Pinola - Preseason chat

Hi AL,

1 - I'll try.

2 - In general, the opinion of most media here in Germany is that Gómez was unhappy in Munich because he had not enough playing time and didn't see any chance that this would improve under Guardiola. Gómez is a more "old-fashioned" type of striker who is mainly waiting in the box for some crosses and today forwards like Mandžukić are preferred. Also during the celebrations of the treble he did not look very happy, it seemed as if he already had decided to leave Bayern at that point. I don't know anything for sure, but his aloofness at the celebrations was very conspicuous. I hope Guardiola knows how to calm the players who will be sitting on the bench because a lot of them will be unhappy. --Jaellee (talk) 16:00, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Javier Patino

Hello. Was wondering why you keep putting an accent on the u in Futbolesta, yet leave it as one word? If the name of the site is written correctly as two words, Fútbol Esta, then the word fútbol has an accent, but as one word it wouldn't. Also, I'm not sure what good that page does as an external link. Most of the content is subscribers only, which goes against WP:ELREG. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:05, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

No worries, mistakes happen to everyone. Arbero (talk) 15:02, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Club name

The message I sent you was for your Javier Patiño section you posted on my talk page. As for my view, moving the page from F.C. Internazionale Milano to Inter Milan just doesn't feel correct, Inter Milan is just what some media prefer to call, it is like moving Sporting CP to Sporting Lisbon. Feels quite wrong, doesn't it? Internazionale is shortened from the full club name, so this is the reason why I often use it.

I see that you have listed Internazionale instead of Inter Milan in the Fredy Guarín article. So I'm guessing you prefer Internazionale as well? Arbero (talk) 15:49, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, no surprise then. Anyway, Struway told me to change Inter Milan back to Internazionale in the Pablo Ibáñez article. Do you want to change it back or something? Because I don't want an edit war with him because of one word. And another thing, I would also like to know regarding an old José Mari Bakero edit, what exactly did you mean by the edit summary "MALAGA B! And a summary for when Mr.Arbero?"? I don't think I found any mistakes, and I do not understand why you added CF inside Málaga B in the managerial statistics section, since the infobox itself just says Málaga B? If Málaga CF is shortened as Málaga, shouldn't Málaga CF B be Málaga B? Thanks. Arbero (talk) 16:14, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

There is no need to apologise, I was just curious about the edit. As for the edit summary, it's true that I don't use it a lot, mainly because most of my edits are pretty simple, and not complicated. But perhaps I should use it more often even if my edits are simple. Arbero (talk) 03:56, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Joshuaforest + Hulk

Where exactly did you accuse Joshuaforest of being Dma94, other than this edit summary? After taking a quick glance at Hulk (footballer) I'd say the section on his early career section needs expanding and that the Zenit section is a little long. Indefblocked sockpuppets

Just wondering why you'd be wanting to introduce a young and improving editor, MYS77, to an indefinitely blocked sockpuppet as a compatriot and someone to talk to if needed? Please don't try and convince me I've been misled by Google translate, or that you didn't know who that sockpuppet was. Struway2 (talk) 20:12, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm sure you remember in the edit-war at Marc Muniesa how I bent over backwards to assume good faith with Uruguayriver, believing him to be a "new" editor who didn't know how Wikipedia worked and didn't really speak English, even asking you to explain in his own language why he shouldn't be repeatedly reverting to your version of that article, while all the time you knew full well he was the latest sockpuppet of the indefinitely blocked Raulseixas/Marcospace and therefore shouldn't be editing at all. Tolerance of sockpuppets shouldn't depend on whether you like their edits or not. I'll remove your talk page from my watchlist. Take care, Struway2 (talk) 06:51, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
If you have questions about editing, please feel free to ask. If you have problems with a specific article, you may be better advised to raise the matter at the article's talk page and request input from WT:FOOTY. Struway2 (talk) 15:35, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Re: Another hunch i know...

Don't think we can say with certainty that he is a sock, but let me know if anything concrete occurs. If the Porto IP makes any more unconstructive edits be sure to add the relevant template warning(s) to his TP; this is important in attempting to educate wrongdoers and to make it easier to block them if they persist. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 01:17, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Can you post a revision of Antony1821 moving a B-club from senior to youth, to help prove it is him? Mattythewhite (talk) 21:47, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, was just completing a couple of tasks before drafting a response. I've now blocked Torreto77 (talk · contribs) as a suspected sockpuppet of Antony1821 (talk · contribs). A brief explanation of the difference between bans and blocks is given at Wikipedia:Blocking policy (lead, fourth paragraph), which is that a ban is a formal retraction of editing privileges and a block disables a user's ability to edit pages. What guidelines in particular are getting you down? And try not to worry too much about vandals, they're not worth getting ourselves too work up over. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 00:27, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
I usually always link technical terms like substitute, coach, manager, loan etc as they're useful for our readers, do you know what guideline supports their removal? Mattythewhite (talk) 02:06, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
I disagree with BaldBoris' interpretation of WP:OVERLINK from the link you sent me; like you I feel these links are beneficial. Personally, I disagree with 'Inter Milan' being the article's title, as it is only one of a number of commonly used names for the club and it goes against the standard convention of including the 'F.C.' initials (or whatever is used). What the club should be referred to in player articles I'm not sure. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 14:07, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

I've added your name to User:TheOriginalSoni/languages

Hi,

I wanted to inform you that I'm creating a list of foreign language speaking editors, so that others find it much more easier to locate editors who speak a given language. It should be particularly useful to help deal with ESL editors and to help translate sources in other languages.

I've added your name to the list, showing you as active and willing to help with translations. I hope you don't mind this addition. Please feel free to make any changes you like to this list, as well as use this list for any purposes required. :)

Spacing in Football infoboxes

Hi,

What is your crusade about the spacing in the football infoboxes about? When the HTML is actually generated based on the templates, spaces are ignored anyway (go to any page that uses the template and view HTML source - there are no spaces between the HTML tags and the team names even if there are in the template). So when a user reads an article, it doesn't matter whether in the template source there are 100 spaces or 0 spaces. The only people it matters for are editors, not the readers.

I update the stats for the Russian Premier League after every game. So it's 14 players X 16 teams, 224 articles a week. If the columns are aligned, it takes me much less time to find the line related to the current team and edit it. If it isn't, it takes longer. Even if it is not so much longer, it adds up when you consider how many articles I have to edit. Is there any reason whatsoever for you removing that spacing?

Geregen2 (talk) 19:34, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. Cheers. Geregen2 (talk) 03:58, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Re: Iago Aspas

Agree with you on both points. It seems redundant to use (1) when there's only one entry (and personally I don't include a number when there's more) and we are encouraged to avoid wikilinking consecutive words per WP:LAYOUT#Links. As usual, I'd recommend starting a discussion at WT:FOOTY to help garner consensus. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 00:15, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi AL

First of all, I must emphasise my respect for someone who can write so well in a second language. I can mangle a bit of French but that's my lot.

I'm currently on holiday in France so have little time for large-scale editing. I tagged the article for a copy edit in the (probably vain) hope that someone would tidy up some of the English syntax etc. For a start, I have no idea what "resciding" means. Likewise, the reference to "competitor" needs changing to something more encyclopaedic.

I am off to Spain soon and will not be back in the UK until early October; when I get back, I'll try to rewrite the article into more grammatical English.

I hope this is all good with you.

Best wishes

Pandiani

It'd do no harm as part of a personal life section, but if it was the only content, it'd be pretty trivial, IMO. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:07, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Re: Refs for names

References for full names might not necessarily be effective in preventing vandalism, but will help in spotting vandalism, as a ref will allow a good-faith editor to know immediately whether a change is correct or not. For instance, a vandal could change Álvaro Negredo's full name to 'Álvaro Fernando Negredo Sánchez' or some such, but without a reference the casual reader or a good-faith editor might not be sure whether to believe it or not, but with a ref included they will know it's false. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 17:56, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Travel advice

Hi AL I hope you don't think I'm being cheeky but I would appreciate your advice. My wife and I are currently in southern France and will shortly be heading off in our campervan to visit northern Spain, hoping to get to the far north-west. On checking our time schedule, we find that we have a week extra, so are thinking of visiting northern Portugal, although we are unlikely to get further south than Porto. As we have no travel guides to Portugal, can you recommend any places to visit. Thanks for any advice. Best wishes -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 15:50, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. Guimarães certainly looks worth a visit. I wasn't aware that it was the birthplace of Portugal, so thanks for that. We will try to get to Porto - I'm already looking forward to the wine tasting! When we get back, I'll drop you a line to let you know how we get on. Cheers. -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 06:18, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Melgarejo

Hello. I've coped the paragraph over so I can refer to the numbers without messing up:

"1 - Benfica IS a powerhouse in Portugal, period, that's not POV (by the way i'm not a Benfica fan, support no club at all, if i did it would be Athletic Bilbao for example) - ah but don't worry, i have not reinstated it; 2 - U.D. Leiria is not known as LEIRIA solely, if you don't "allow" for the full name, then accept my last change, which is 500% correct (OK, maybe not that much); 3 - i presented a much better UEFA.com report on the match with Chelsea, you reverted it, why? 4 - again the beef, i present a double wikilink (competition and season of competition, or in this case season of competition and final of competition), you only "allow" for one, "double why"? 5 - i don't think it's POV to write the club's nickname in the middle of a sentence where you are clearly referring to Benfica (Reds), that does not confuse the reader, but don't fret, as in item #1, i have not reinstated the wording."

  1. "powerhouse" is tabloid language, not encyclopedic. If you want to indicate Benfica's stature, use something factual and appropriate: in this case, "reigning champions" would work;
  2. The en.wiki article U.D. Leiria does what most football club articles do: uses the full name at the start, introduces the common name União de Leiria, and uses Leiria thereafter. This Portugoal article has Leiria in the headline and later uses, and União de Leiria at first use. I don't object to União de Leiria at first use;
  3. That link isn't there as a match report, it's there to reference Mr Melgarejo starting the match. The link you added doesn't mention his name;
  4. Because what we're talking about is the 2013 cup final, so that's the important link. The season is already established twice, so that doesn't need to be displayed, and if the reader wants the article about the season of competition, it's clearly linked in the very first line of the cup final article. Please see WP:SPECIFICLINK and WP:SEAOFBLUE. There's another piece of advice somewhere, which I can't find at the moment, that says something like don't spoil the prose just to cram in as many links as possible: your English is far too good to let you write something like "the campaign's Portuguese Cup final" if you weren't doing it to get two separate links in;
  5. There's nothing wrong with using a well-known nickname, occasionally, as a relief when the club name has already been used a fair number of times. In this particular case, I personally didn't Benfica had been overused by that stage, and thought using "the Reds" immediately before a sentence about Liverpool was potentially confusing by association. Reinstate it if you genuinely think it adds something to the flow of the article or the reader's understanding of Mr Melgarejo.

Re the reference for his height: do not remove references just because you don't like having them in the infobox. If you do this habitually, please stop. Generally, the height of a player only appears in the infobox, unless the subject is particularly short or tall, so it has to be ref'd there. Also, if you look at the bottom of the Benfica profile, you'll see the publisher (the bit after the copyright symbol) is SL Benfica without dots. Hope some of this helps, cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:01, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

You're correct that until official club sources exist to confirm a transfer, we shouldn't move a player to another club. But once the move has definitely happened, all we need is a reliable source that verifies all the information contained in the article. As your rant in the edit summary implied, one is enough, and English is better, but I couldn't find an English-language one.

I think you're still struggling to understand what references are for, even after all these years. They're not to provide interesting links for readers to go off and read; they're to show that the information contained in the article has been previously published in reliable sources. Otherwise, why replace the existing reference for his starting the UEFA Cup final with a link to a match report that didn't mention his name, and then add an additional link to some opinion-piece on F365, and why remove the only one of the three foreign-language reference that verified the Kuban transfer fee? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:57, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Re

Att.

Obrigado, amigo. Você sempre me ajudando. Saiba que te quero bem, sempre. Bom fim de semana. abraço. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gringoladomenega (talkcontribs) 18:21, 21 September 2013 (UTC) Gringoladomenega (talk) 20 September 2013 (UTC)

I removed the reference because it was a speculative one that Ramalho would have played in the Champions League against Bremen due to the spread of flu on the Athletic squad. His career section says he did not enter the field in that match. However, it was nearly two years later that he made his debut, against Sevilla in La Liga. This Sports Illustrated article was made for that match on the mixed-race factor, and should be included instead.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/sid_lowe/11/23/jonas/index.html Hope that you understand Indiasummer95 (talk) 18:23, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Pep Clotez

Hi there, AL. I was wondering if you could help on an article that you've been involved in editing previously. these edits done to Josep Clotet Ruiz, are mostly done by one editor which appear to be the subject himself. The article now reads more like an autobiography, but the sources that the editor added are in Spanish so I'm unable to verify what is supported by those citation and what isn't. What you do think about it ? Cheers, Mentoz86 (talk) 12:19, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. I do have the article in my watchlist, that's how I stumpled upon these edits (though I might want to consider remove or reduce my watchlist aswell, as it took me three weeks before I noticed them). Even though it probably is Clotet, the editor is allowed to edit his own article as long as he doesn't do any COI-edits, but in this case I guess it was right to remove their edits alltogether. I don't see the value in "trans_title", so I normally don't add those, but I'll do (almost) anything you ask me to ;) Thank you for your help.Mentoz86 (talk) 16:02, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi AL, I didn't know it was you. I just wondered why the IP reverted because Pinola is wearing a tracksuit with the crest of 1. As all facts matched and the guy in the picture really looked like Pinola I didn't see any reason to doubt the pic. Happy weekend --Jaellee (talk) 21:05, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello. An image was uploaded to commons at the name Javier Patino.jpg by a user with a history of uploading blatant copyvio images. "Blatant" means where you look at the picture and see straightaway that it's a professional photograph and if you do a google image search it comes up on commercial media websites near/at the top of the search results. It was quickly deleted at commons, and was only on the Patino article for about 20 minutes. A week later, a different image, clearly taken on someone's phone or poor-quality camera, was uploaded to the same filename by a different user. That's the one currently on the article. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 06:29, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Hola, AL! I'm not sure why Evandro Brandão's spell at Blackburn wasn't included in the infobox since it is sourced in the article. Nevertheless, I have added it now. As for nationalities, if it's controversial, I would avoid the whole issue and just say "X is a footballer", but in the case of Brandão, no one has complained, so I wouldn't bother changing it. – PeeJay 16:39, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Help / Chit chat

Hi AL,

1) I have added a translation for the reference in Zuculini's article.

2) Yes, fortunately Bayern are winning, even it was quite difficult the last few games. Each autumn they have problems I hope that at least some of the injured guys (Shaqiri, Thiago, Pizarro, Badstuber and Robben) will recover soon. For Badstuber it does not look good, I'm afraid he won't be able to play this season anymore and he will also miss the World Cup. The cruciate ligament in his right knee ruptured on 2 December 2012 in the match against Dortmund. Just as he was getting ready to start training again in May 2013, the ligament re-ruptured and it was estimated that it takes at least 10 months before he can play again. His last surgery on 1 October went well, but now his injury has to heal.

It's no surprise that as a German I support FC Bayern Munich, but isn't there a Portuguese team you can support? For example S.L. Benfica or F.C. Porto – or are they the archrivals of your favorite team? --Jaellee (talk) 22:58, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

who said that the player whole career should be merged in 1 section? i guess sections are out there to make people life easier, by clicking on hotlinks that categories are providing, by merging all the information to 1 section, makes the user tired of reading the whole personal life achievements of the person subscribed. (Thats always a personal opinion?) I didn't make any changes yet, thanks for your kindness to en-rich the content. regards Argento1985 20:24, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Enosis Neon Paralimni

As you say yourself, there are two clubs beginning with Enosis Neon, so we need to differentiate between them in the infobox. This is really very basic stuff. You do know that we construct these articles to inform the reader, presumably? and the infobox is there for the reader to get an at-a-glance overview of what clubs the player has played for? If we just put Enosis Neon, how exactly do you expect the reader to tell what club we mean? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:35, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi mate, thanks for your message. I always appreciate the time you take to discuss contributions. It makes me feel bad that I don't do it myself. Anyways, I shall begin: I think it is necessary to mention his international career in the lead section, even in brief, regardless of how short it was. The lead section is supposed to summarise the entire article, and it would be remiss of us not to mention his international caps, which would be a major achievement in anyone's career. As for writing "2003–04 season" and "2008–09 season", you seem to have two different points of view here; are we writing for a reader who has a clue about the subject or one who has no clue? If the former, then you are right that I would not need to specify that a "season-long loan" starting in August 2003 refers to the 2003–04 season; if the latter, then you are again right that "2008–09" would need to be followed by "season" to avoid confusion over whether we are referring to the calendar years 2008 and 2009 or the 2008–09 football season. I would suggest that, at the first use, "XXXX–YY season" should always be used, and thereafter "XXXX–YY" would suffice (except in the odd case where confusion may arise). I hope this explains my position (which I have now had a chance to consider properly) well enough for you (and you, User:GiantSnowman). – PeeJay 21:36, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks User:PeeJay2K3, I agree that using 'season' for the first use and not thereafter makes sense. GiantSnowman 12:23, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
No, in the same way that you wouldn't write "association football" every time - only the first time, if context needs to be established. GiantSnowman 16:51, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Re: No PC update either for...

I'd be included to agree with you and use RSSSF, as they list each cap (although they do seem to be missing his most recent cap). In any case, a source needs to be cited for the table, which is presently not the case. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:04, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

WP:KARLSRUHER

I hadn't realised you'd been asking a question when you first mentioned this. Don't see what the problem with WP:KARLSRUHER is, to be honest. All it advises is to use clubs' full(ish) names rather than just city or descriptor, for clarity and precision, but if you don't want to, then make sure what you do use is still clear and not ambiguous: "If you do insist on using one-word names, or town names, please check that it's appropriate, and that no other club uses that name. For example there is another Hertha, another Stuttgart, another Frankfurt, another Köln and even another Bayern." cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:28, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Caligiuris

Hi AL,

I don't think that there is a relationship between Paul Caligiuri and the brothers Daniel and Marco. According to this source Paul Caligiuri is the father of the two, but I can't believe that because he still played in the US when the older brother was born and here it is stated that Daniel Caligiuri's father was Italian ("Father an Italian, mother a German - with which country or which culture do you feel more connected to?"). Another source explicitly says that Paul Caligiuri is not related to the Caligiuri brothers. --Jaellee (talk) 18:19, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Re: Ighalo / Estonian people

Wow, thank you for reminding me of the fantastic Nigerians that played for Lyn during that period, like John Obi Mikel, Chinedu Ogbuke (which was known simply as "Edu") and Odion Ighalo. I'll add some info (a lot if I'm allowed), later on when I have some time. Regarding those Estonian players, it looks like they have a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS and they revert whoever tries to change it, I had a long discussion with the user in question, but we didn't exactly reach a consensus. You can add categories automatically, see WP:HOTCAT. As for CD Basconia, if that is not the correct name then move the page to the correct spelling, we can then WP:CFDS the category. GiantSnowman 18:04, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Yordi

Even in England, a lot of teams are also known by just the district they take their name from, mainly when they are the only notable club from that area. The reason to include their moniker in headings and such is for the sake of clarity and formality, and consistency in this matter. VEOonefive 21:38, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

"Personal life" section

Just take a look at any complete article of a soccer player: whether it's Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Zinedine Zidane, Didier Drogba. In all those articles "Personal life" goes before statistics. I'm not trying to say it's a better order than what you're trying to do, all I'm trying to do is streamline articles so that they all follow the same order. Be my guest though if it bothers you keep one article in one order while the others are in another order. Zastavafan76 (talk) 22:37, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. Where did that section I wrote in last week end up? If you are such a busy man and have your talkpage-threads archived after only 24h, I understand why you poke me after 45 hours of no reply. ;) Sorry for not answering more swiftly, but I had an headache yesterday and when I returned to Wiki today I had a lot of stuff to do that was more important than a simple trans_title (which of course only took me three minutes). The translation from Google was very poor, so I had to use my brain instead. ;) I wasn't aware of this until you showed it to me, but you are correct - what a bad winner ;) Keep it up, Mentoz86 (talk) 20:13, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

{{User:MiszaBot/config |maxarchivesize = 250K |counter = 3 |algo = old(1d) |archive = User talk:Always Learning/Archive %(counter)d }}

That is how the bot operates, archiving threads older than 1d (one day), changing the "|algo " parameter also changes how to bot operates, if you want the threads to stay for a week you change 1d to 7d. Mentoz86 (talk) 20:58, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Mathias Schober

Hi,

I like them going on winning. It's really addictive. (-:

Schweini's surgery went well and they expect him to start training again in January next year, so I'm not so worried about him. I worry more about Robben, he seems to have a really big wound and I hope that there will be no inflammation, otherwise recovery will take longer than the estimated six weeks.

The references in Mathias Schober is okay, I would have translated it in the same way.

Good luck for Portugal in the draw today. --Jaellee (talk) 09:52, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello, when I did not put that the player is Catalan or Spanish, I just stated that the surname is of Catalan origin, obviously not of Castilian origin or as the English say Spanish language, deulofeu means in Catalan "God-made-him" I just stated about the surname, I did not mention any claimed--Vvven (talk) 19:15, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

no ok men i had no problem, you know more about WP rules, but just I want do see that this is a classic Catalan name and not one French, and many people believe so, because it is closer to the French than to Castilian (Spanish), although it has no minimal relationship with these 2 languages, is pure catalan and old--Vvven (talk) 19:25, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Re: Naming customs tag

To be honest I'm not sure; the fact the Catalan template exists suggests it ought to be used, but on the other hand the Spanish template seems to be predominantly used over the Catalan one, e.g. Carles Puyol, Cesc Fàbregas. I'd be inclined to use the Spanish template, but I'm not sure if there's any policy, guideline or consensus that favours either. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 20:04, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, although the IPs in question are likely to be the same individual I can't say for certain, given a check on the IP locations shows none of them are from the same city. I have given them level 1 warnings, but given the bad faith nature of their edits I won't need to go up in exact chronological order, per Wikipedia:WikiProject user warnings/Usage and layout#Levels. MYS77 talk with me ☺ 02:55, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Re: Casemiro

I don't think we benefit from shortening the full name in the infobox; as Wikipedia isn't a paper encyclopaedia we don't need to worry about taking up space. Indeed, we could be misleading readers by abbreviating full names, as someone might only be glancing at the page and only take notice of the infobox entry and presume the initials are just that, a la Harry S. Truman.

I think Casimiro could perhaps be correct. A search for Casimiro shows it is a popular Portuguese surname, whereas there aren't many Casemiros, which suggests to me the latter might come from the subject intentionally giving himself a nickname that slightly deviates from his surname. All of that is conjecture of course, all we can do is wait for the verdict of Mega60 (talk · contribs).

Also, I'm not sure why you removed some of the subject's name from the Persondata. The middle names José Francisco and the surname Venâncio are just as relevant as the remaining parts of his full name, so I don't see the benefit from removing them. 2) Respecto a jugadores que pertenecen al primer equipo, son Sugi, Carbonell y Álex Muñoz. De hecho, Álex es el único lateral izquierdo del primer equipo junto con Paco Peña.

Transfermarkt.com

Hi AL,

Everything's fine here, I hope you're also okay.

About transfermarkt template, I just did what is described in the documentation of the template and there is no possibility to specify a special page. Seems to me that the template has to be changed to show the profile page. But I don't know if I should change the links to the template anymore as I found the decision to delete this template: Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2013 December 10#Template:Transfermarkt. I'm afraid improving the template won't have a lot of effect as it will be gone soon anyway. Maybe the untemplated links will also be removed but I'm not sure. --Jaellee (talk) 17:16, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

I also don't have something against this link, but I've been trying to use other sources if possible bacause there was already a try to ban it half a year ago. --Jaellee (talk) 18:56, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. I've ended up using footballzz.co.uk as a last resort, even though, as you mention, it doesn't pass WP:RS as it's user-generated. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 01:07, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Same problem but this time for a different player; I'm trying to find a source for Álvaro Negredo's stats for Rayo Vallecano B, and having looked through footballzz.co.uk and Transfermarkt I can't find anything. They were added without a source nearly six years ago by an IP, so who knows how accurate they are. I'm going to remove them until a source can be found. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:08, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
It does seem this site has taken its career stats directly from us so I'd discount them. Having just about exhausted my Google searching capabilities, I have found a couple of useful sites. This states that Negredo played for Rayo B in 2003/04 (in addition to 2004/05) and was one of the division's leading scorers with 13 goals. And this site (scroll down and click Currículo) lists him with 15 apps 14 goals in 2003/04 and 25 apps 14 goals in 2004/05. Meanwhile, footballzz.co.uk list him as also being a member of the Rayo B team in 2002/03, but don't list any stats. And Happy New Year, of course; what better way could there be to start it off than to solve the mystery of Álvaro Negredo's Rayo B stats ;) Mattythewhite (talk) 11:48, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Rodrigo Moreno Machado

Hi AL, Rodrigo was playing what is considered 'senior' football with Real Madrid C, as that team was part of the Spanish league system. Therefore we would not consider them 'youth' years. GiantSnowman 09:51, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Vasco, thanks for explaining - feel free to add back the Real Madrid 'youth' years, with an explanation in the main part of the article that he played for both, that should avoid further confusion :)
As for honours, do you have a reliable source (no, Wikipedia is not a reliable source, see this for more information) which states playing 1 minute in Spain/Portugal gets that honour? Because if so, again, that will avoid any further instances like this. GiantSnowman 19:15, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Rochina

Hello. Point by point:

  1. Remember we're writing in English for an English-speaking readership: in written prose, as opposed to lists, we use whatever native-speaking English-language sources commonly use, which is without any FC or similar.
  2. Again, it's common usage. In British English written prose and common speech (may be different in US English) scores have the winning score first. If you ask someone how their team got on, they say they lost 2–0 whether home or away.
  3. You're right that there's no need to write out the season in the Zaragoza loan sentence. It is pretty obvious that if he started in September 2012, went on loan and made his debut in Feb 2013, it's 2012/13. Personally, I'd link to the relevant Zaragoza season, but it's crap, unfinished, and doesn't even give their final league position, so if you must link to the league season, link it to the brief and relevant "finished bottom", not to a long string of words.
  4. Starting endless clauses with -ing is really not great writing. It does no harm as an occasional usage, and no more than once in a sentence. Some people use it to excess because it's easy and saves thinking about sentence structure, but I'd be surprised if you found many sentences built like that in literate print sources. Grammatically, you run the risk of losing the relationship between the -ing word and what it refers to, and the reader can easily lose track of long-winded sentences.

I might have gone too far by splitting that sentence into three. How about "... to help defeat Mallorca 3–2 at La Romareda, but Zaragoza went on to finish bottom and were relegated." It shouldn't be "as Zaragoza finished bottom", because that implies a connection between them beating Mallorca and finishing bottom. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:53, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Re: Expert outlook needed

What I do when adding honours is ensure they are mentioned and referenced in the prose; whether that's standard practice or if there's an alternative method I'm unsure, but that's how I do it anyway. Like at Lewis Montrose. I think the naming convention for club articles is largely used to avoid awkward names like 'Liverpool (football club)'. And the one article that I am aware of that was moved based on WP:COMMONNAME was Inter Milan, which was an absolute pig's ear of a decision. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 18:24, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Re: Uncalled page move?

A Google search suggests the club is more commonly known as PAOK rather than P.A.O.K., so I've moved the article. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:43, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Re: Vandal extraordinaire

Since IPs are often shared, it's not as easy to give them lengthy blocks in the way it is for a blatantly bad faith account that is operated by one individual. So the length of blocks need to be tiered (like here). The IP in question is not far away from a block. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:01, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Re: Radja Nainggolan

Sorry for the late reply. My train of thought is that as he isn't yet a permanent Roma player, this shouldn't be reflected in the infobox. Including the permanent spell could confuse a casual reader, who might not understand why the currentclub parameter says he is on loan and why the senior career section lists Roma as a permanent club. Could you link me to the user you mention originally editing Júlio Regufe Alves, so I can compare their contributions with that of the latest IP? Mattythewhite (talk) 01:30, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Based on the long-term nature of this abuse, I would be inclined to give a block on identification; but when the individual is hopping IP at such a rate blocking won't be much more than a short-term remedy. I won't block the latest IPs as they're stale, but if they become active again or a new IP surfaces let me know and I will act accordingly. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:37, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Pandiani

Hello. Taking each point separately:

  • Please bear in mind that in your original edit, you used the edit summary to complain about an anon editor changing the club without doing the other bits. The only thing the anon actually did wrong was to change the club without adding a source to verify that fact, but it's quite likely they wouldn't know they were supposed to. You do know that. Had you added a source to verify his new club, you'd have also discovered that he joined in 2013, not in 2014 as you guessed/assumed.
  • I don't understand your distinction between links and references. If a sentence says he scored 3 from 6 in the 2013/14 Apertura, then we need a reliable source that verifies that piece of information (the 4th goal was scored in the opening game of the Clausura). Your string of links verified his three goals, but didn't verify how many games they came from or whether he scored any others.
  • I know that volverá means will return; but in English, a headline writer wouldn't use the future tense when he's already back.
  • The article is about Walter Pandiani, and we refer to the subject of an article by surname, unless it'd be confusing. I didn't think it was confusing.
  • As to writing about his debut instead, we could, but are the events of his first game more informative than his overall performance?
  • As to "no reply"... I'm afraid I've no intention of spending an hour in the middle of the night when I'd rather be asleep, formulating a rational reply to your complaints.
  • If anyone else had put inaccurate info in the infobox of a player on my watchlist, I'd have fixed it with the same or similar edit summary. If anyone else had changed a functional reliable source that verified the facts in their sentence for a string of match reports that were interesting but didn't verify the facts, I'd have changed them back. Those were mistakes that needed fixing. I'm sorry you need to take that personally, and I'm particularly sorry you think me so petty that I'd undo your changes in some sort of reaction to a "stupid rollback" that I don't actually remember. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:30, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
I don't understand why you'd want to add a link to a match report for every goal he scored. The sentence has a source, for verifiability: why would we need three extra links? If the article was discussing the nature of a particular goal, or an event within a particular match, then we'd need to link to a source that verified the specifics, and that might well be a match report. But it isn't. If you want to put "they" or "the club" instead of the second instance of Miramar, then carry on, you don't need my permission; not "side", though.

Where that article does need improvement is in the earlier part of Mr Pandiani's career rather than its winding down: there are as many words devoted to the last 18 months as to the 9/10 years before he went to Birmingham :-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:40, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. It's hard for me to reply from here as wifi is a bit hit & miss; also, it's hard to edit WP from a phone. I'll send you a full message on my return to UK in ten days or so.

As for Lescott, I've always thought that he was overrated and not good enough for England, but what do I know?!

Thanks for the kind comments about the Saints and MP. It's good to support a club who believe in developing youngsters. Hopefully now, we can hang on to them (esp. Luke Shaw) rather than have to sell them to balance the books. Chambers and Ward-Prowse will play for England before too long.

Míchel

A few points:

  • thanks for finding that lengthy piece in El Comercio. It's really interesting, for a person who can read Spanish, and will make a lovely reference for personal stuff when I get round to it. But it isn't a "much better" reference for his birthplace than Soccerway. WP:Verifiability#Non-English sources says "English-language sources are preferred over non-English ones, whenever English sources of equal quality and relevance are available". Soccerway is a reliable source and clearly presents the relevant information; the El Comercio piece relies on the reader being able to pick out and infer that "la biografía de Míchel, quien escribió la primera página en su Pola de Lena natal" means he was born in Pola de Lena;
  • newspapers in citation templates go under the |work= or |newspaper= parameter, not |publisher=, so that they appear italicised in the reference list. Please see the template documentation;
  • you seem to have removed the reference for his date of birth, without using your edit summary to explain why. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as I've restored it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:15, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Re: User:Juanmartinlavagna aka User:Juanmlavagna

Hi, I have blocked the IP for one month. Apologies for not responding to your message about Braulio Nóbrega, I agree that the content should be included and have watchlisted the article. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 00:43, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Photos for players

Hey, AL! Most of the sport sites in Romania don't allow other people to use their photos, do you know any sites where I could find free-use photos? I want to gather some for the players of FC Petrolul Ploiesti.8Dodo8 (talk · contribs) 12:08, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks anyway. It's so difficult to add photos on Wikipedia... 8Dodo8 (talk · contribs) 12:47, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Re: Braulio Nóbrega

I don't mind, WP:SPI can be a bit of a drag so I'm happy to act. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:01, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Jesé

Hey, as promised i looked at it. This was my edit. Kante4 (talk) 20:55, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

He keeps reverting it and stating some bs reasons. Maybe you could bring it to WPFooty again? Kante4 (talk) 20:32, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, but just frustrating but not worth the time. When he adds some more bs it gets reverted, simple as that. Yep, saw those edits, seems like a vandal who thinks this is a forum or social network... Kante4 (talk) 17:31, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 19

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Oceano da Cruz, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Legends Cup (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Re: Cádiz CF

Fixed. I've also renamed the section to just 'Coaches', as it includes the current coach. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:32, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Re: Technical doubt

Hi, I always write 3-1, as opposed to 1-3. The latter just doesn't seem right to me. I don't often see it written that way in English language publications; what about in Portugal? Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 01:33, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Jesé

If references are so freely available, please can you directly cite them? GiantSnowman 20:53, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Unless a reader reads an entire article, there's no way of knowing the honours are referenced in the article main body. Directly citing does no harm and an awful lot of good. GiantSnowman 21:48, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, the article looks much better now and the honours being directly referenced means they will not be challenged/removed again. GiantSnowman 09:49, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Real Madrid's new look website

Now that the website has changed format, I am guessing that any references from the site will be void since those pages no longer exist. I am kicking myself now because I wanted to expand the infomation about Madrid's cantera and now all is lost!!! There must be some bugs because most of the player profiles are in French or English and one was in Indonesian!!! ¡Viva el Presidente! Raul17 (talk) 01:35, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Happens from time to time, i remember when i started editing this occurred with UEFA.com and Athletic Bilbao's official web as well, it's quite annoying but what can we do?

Happy Sunday, happy editing --AL (talk) 01:56, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

But it made the site terrible! I used to go to the tabs for the different teams to see the times they would be playing and if they were at the Ciudad Real Madrid. The only positive I see is that the coaching personnel has a better photograph than in the old format, but it's disappointing that you can't see their coaching career. It seems that Madrid C's player profiles are in other languages than Spanish. Well, I can translate if I need to. And thanks!! Raul17 (talk) 03:13, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

José Franco Gómez

No appearances in Thailand or Malaysia per Soccerway, so I have PRODded the article. GiantSnowman 18:22, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Re: User:Bruno corinthiano

Blocked. I don't think it's wrong to write the score in reverse, it just seems a less common way of doing it. Perhaps a WT:FOOTY discussion would be useful to find out what others write? Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 20:03, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Chico

The English media give different WP:COMMONNAME to some foreign players. This is an English-language website, so it must reflect that he is commonly known as Chico Flores. Sorry to say The Almightey Drill (talk) 21:03, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Have you googled "Chico Flores"? "Only" 23.1 million results. It's the same as the player known as Mazzola in Brazil is known by his birth name of José Altafini elsewhere The Almightey Drill (talk) 21:05, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Javi Guerra may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Re: User:Bruno corinthiano

A range block might be in order, but having never administered one before I'm not very clued up on them. I'll probably seek guidance from a more experienced admin. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:44, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Keylor Navas

The WP:BURDEN is on those adding the information to adequately source it, and once removed unreferenced material should not be re-added without a reliable source per WP:BLP. GiantSnowman 09:10, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Do you win a winner's medal in Costa Rica playing 12 games? I don't know. It could be 1 game, it could be 30. This is why we need WP:RS to WP:V. GiantSnowman 13:14, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Et tu, Uefa?

AAAaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh! Uefa.com just changed their Uefa Youth Cup game summaries! The play-by-play had the assists for each goal, but the new format does not include them. "The gods are plotting against me!" Thanks! Raul17 (talk) 18:46, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Fortunately, you (we, WP in general), won't need those match summaries very often, as the vast majority of the players appearing in those youth competitions are still not eligible for a WP article. Am i correct or not?

Cheers --AL (talk) 20:37, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Yes, very much so, eventhough Enzo managed to have an article. But I try to keep them for my "real world" stats. Which brings me to ask if the UEFA Youth League is notable? Thanks again!! Raul17 (talk) 21:27, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Re: Doubt / Updates

The article has been PRODed a couple of times. It fails WP:NFOOTBALL but I think it may pass WP:GNG. If you feel strongly that it should be deleted WP:AFD would be the place to go. I've messaged GS about the possibility of a range block, so here's hoping. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 19:21, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Ivan Santos

Hi, my amendments at Álvaro Negredo (section header and 'match played') were to make the career stats table meet the layout endorsed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players#Career statistics. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 22:16, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

A discussion would be way forward with the section headers. I've seen quite a few articles of late that include 'match played', but clearly that must not be the case for Spanish player biographies. It of course differs from the timestamps we included in infoboxes, but I think it's useful content as it leaves the reader in no doubt as to what the date refers to (e.g. date the last match was played or date the stats were updated).
