hypocrasy

It's not just the fact that you are being neurotic; it's also that you're being incredibly hypocritical. Who are you to say that some small facts are useful whereas others are not? Surely it's up to the reader to decide and not you.--Benchmark90 (talk) 19:20, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

I think you are embracing the Inclusionism cause, and accusing me of being an Exclusionist, and there may be some truth in what you say. However there is an argument that editing out less important information keeps articles crisp and readable. Personally I consider articles as large as Joseph Pomeroy Widney, Jack Kemp or 'Allo 'Allo! (series 5) overly verbose. May I suggest that you have a look at those articles and see if you are comfortable with that level of detail. ϢereSpielChequers 22:37, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Dengero, I did a search for thier, which can be a place or a surname but mostly on Wikipedia was a typo for their. It has given me some interesting reading ranging from sport, cinema and the history of Assamese tribes to schools and rock music.ϢereSpielChequers 17:08, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I did a search for "diffuse the situation" and got 24 hits across Wikipedia, mostly from articles that were otherwise good quality. Easter Island

Dutch paintings

• Also from me, from Holland. At first I did not understand how you got to the website, but reading your talk page I do. It is impossible to check every word on spelling. Then I have to write my text each time in a wordprocessor. Or is there another solution? Taksen (talk) 17:11, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Dear Taksen, I use a Linux PC with wordprocessing software that is set to spell check in English. So when I'm editing in Wikipedia I have the advantage that typos are underlined in red. I'm afraid I am just a user of the technology and don't know how to change settings, but I'm sure it would be possible to get your PC set up so you could use an English spell checker or a Dutch one depending on the language you were working in. Alternatively just go on putting in that interesting Art stuff you submit and leave the tidying up to people like me.ϢereSpielChequers 18:26, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Do I follow people around?

Bit of both really, if someone thanks me for fixing their typos, and I found their stuff interesting I often go and look at other contributions they've made. Also some people have a blindspot for particular words and if their blindspot creates one of the typos that I search for then our paths will repeatedly cross. In your case looking at the last time I edited something after you, I think you write "becuase" rather than because, plus we both have an interest in British Politics so we may have similar reading material.ϢereSpielChequers 21:53, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I did PROD it originally, but then changes were made to the article to make me not at all sure if it should be deleted. I then added the tags to it then left it for the community to sort out. Manual of Style edit

Hi Jonathan. It's a good idea in some respects, but I think your edit is not necessary. The topic there is "consistency within articles", and disambiguation pages are not articles. (See Wikipedia:What is an article?.) Paul Erik ^{(talk)(contribs)} 15:33, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Oh yes, I take your point. However I got there from a link from Center where I've now twice had rolled back a bunch of edits where someone is promoting American English spelling even where that causes red links. I think anyone taking a glance at the edits can see that the anon IP there is editing disruptively. You've warned them, and if they continue they could be blocked. Metropolis

Hi. I just edited the Metropolis (film) page to remove a reference that does not support the article's statement. More specifically, the article at reference 12 says nothing about a forthcoming Blu-Ray release, nor does it come from "The Digital Bits." What is it with you and Rich Miniter?

He's a gobshite, a partisan blowhard, and a lazy arse who does all his research from home on his computer. He's also a drunk. My edits were just reflecting that fact.

I reverted [edit] of Richard Miniter because it looked like vandalism. I've looked again in case I misjudged your edits, and I still think your edits to that page look like vandalism, for example your sentence "This town is generally populated by jerks such as Richie-boy." If you think the article is biased and you have information that would balance it then I suggest you read Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons before making any further edits to biographical articles on Wikipedia. Having now Googled him I think it would be hard to argue that he was not noteable enough for an article, I don't think I could judge whether its biased or not, but it does make it clear that he's defending Dubya's Oil Crusade, which in my view is far more damning than any of the epithets you used about him. Splat5572's problem

The problem is Splatt5572 keeps putting samples from Santa Ana and Golden State Frwy back to I-5's exit list when they both have thier own Exit list on their page. The next time Splat5572 play this type of game, undo his changes. I mention the same thing like 10 ties, we had the same war as we have to US 101 and I-80. No problem, as well as your talk page I reverted one of the vandalisms to PETA, issued a Final warning, and because it is clear vandalism after a final warning I reported it to admin intervention against vandalism and within minutes User:Yamaha519vx was blocked. Thank you for your assistance re: this user. Unfortunately, the user has once again left a personal, negative message at my talk page instead of directing his or her concerns to the article's discussion page. You'll note more warnings were blanked by the user so he or she is fully aware of what they are doing. I am also not the only editor to have changed or reverted this editors WP:NOR on that particular article (Death). You may also note that "A Sniper" has "blanked" all of the reasons I have given him for my edits. He is "fully aware" that "what [he is] doing" is crying wolf. I am no vandal, and no edit warrior, and no personal attacker, despite what this "A Sniper" may tell you. In football, this person would be known as a flopper.

Your policy

So it's OK if others repeatedly undo my edits, but not if I undo theirs? How is that fair?

Attacks

I would just add that "A Sniper"'s continual reversion of my edits without ever addressing the reasons I gave him for making those edits make it quite difficult to "stay cool." That said, the most I have done is describe his behavior as imperious or Kafkaesque or the like. One more thing

From your own rules: "Deliberate engagement in edit warring instead of discussion is considered a breach of Wikiquette and may cause a user to be blocked from editing."

I have repeatedly (and mostly politely) tried to engage "A Sniper" in discussion of his edits. He has spurned every such attempt. Instead, he has just unilaterally and continually reverted my edits. I agree that your edits are not vandalism, but mostly politely isn't quite the same as always politely, can I suggest you read this? Also if you edit from an IP address rather than registering as a user you are more likely to be assumed to be a vandal. especially if you forget to sign talk page comments by ending your remarks with ~~~~

That may not seem fair but it is a practical response to a significant minority of unregistered editors. You were actually both vulnerable to the three revert rule but I'm glad to see you are both editing away from Death (band) can I suggest you stay away from that article for a few days? Inclusion of link to www.abusos urbanisticos almanzora NO on Albox page

Hi, I included the above link on the web page on the basis that the link to La Voz de Albox (an organisation with similar aims and objectives) had already been permitted.

The only difference is that the AUAN covers a number of towns in the Almanzora Valley.

I just thought I'd point out that attack pages can be speedily deleted under criteria g10, so there's no need to wait the five days a prod tag would require. I'd have thought that however small or insignificant the information, Wikipedia was about bringing as much knowledge as possible to people. Driverside

I've done a quick check of their sites and links and I'm not convinced that a site that admits to being in Beta mode or that claims this much coverage about themselves is notable enough yet for a Wikipedia article. I've also Googled them and found at least one press release being quoted. But I've not found anything that I would consider merits an article, however if you have got something that implies they are notable or you want to take it to AFD then go ahead. They seem to be deleting the speedy tags themselves rather than putting {{Hangon}}, but if they do put a {{Hangon}} then it gets a stay of execution anyway. Your comments about Thor Heyerdahls theories are welcome. I didn't mean to imply that I thought he was entirely reliable. Edit warnings

Thanks for your comments and support on my RfA. Although life has been hectic recently (not just the RfA), I don't always warn if it is an IP address and that's their only edit. Maybe I should, but a lot of those, I think, won't return or will return with a different IP address. Maybe there's some policy guidance I need to read, there's a lot of it about! On the other hand, when someone I warn has several recent edits, I check them, fix them if they are vandalism and haven't been fixed, and warn them for any vandalism that hasn't been reported - sometimes that means all their edits. Hi Doug, Yes I suppose not warning the first time might make sense, what annoys me is when I see someone who has been reverted several times before getting any sort of warning. I'd love to see some research on the success rate of each level of warning at deterring vandals. Hi! Yes this is certainly one right way to send me a message, and my advice was going to be to discuss the changes that seem to be controversial on Talk:Wolverine and the X-Men, but it seems you are already doing that. So firstly a question, is the version you watch in Brazil in Portuguese or in English? Secondly a couple of suggestions, if you are going to source information from a television program have look at Wikipedia:Citation_templates. Specifically can you get the following information?

{{cite episode | title = | episodelink = | series = | serieslink = | airdate = | season = | number = }}

Lastly if the person who is deleting your additions isn't taking part in the discussion on Talk:Wolverine and the X-Men then you could try putting a message on their talk page along the lines of "Hi, I've noticed you edit Wolverine and the X-Men, what do you think of my suggestions on Talk:Wolverine and the X-Men?"

Yes it's "mine" as far as Wikipedia is concerned, but I only brought it here from another part of my life where it is a boilerplate question for vetting candidates. I'm delighted to have someone else take this up, (especially this week where I feel my involvement in other people's RFA's should be restricted to Support as per or Oppose as per once the answer has become obvious to me). I was intending to to make this my standard question in those RFA's where the candidate potentially met my criteria, and hadn't preempted the question in their nomination. But if no-one else was paying attention to it or the answers then I'd have dropped it after a month or so as a personal hobbyhorse that wasn't contributing to the process. Hi Nancy, my current name has many "real" meanings, I've listed a few of them on my user page. On reflection yes it is way too long; When you combine two words which have disambiguation pages with a third that has multiple dictionary meanings the possible interpretations are many. The meanings I intended are based partly on the sort of things I get up to on Wikipedia, with a hint of my hero Beorn, an allusion to this my new name not being my real life identity, a hint of one of my many failings (one of the meanings of Spiel being "A lengthy and extravagant speech or argument usually intended to persuade") and an allusion to some of my hobbies (chequers are a major omission from my orchard). As for my commenting on FACs, I'm conscious that it might seem a little rude when I comment but do not !vote. Recently I've started to read most FAC candidates, almost always find something that needs tweaking, and occasionally find an ambiguity that I raise as a comment, however despite rereading WP:FACR I don't yet feel qualified to judge on either criteria 1a or 1b. Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm having big problems editing certain articles in that attempted edits take so long that I'm timed out (Error Message 500 appears). This is frustrating as it's happening with articles to which I've made major contributions and/or created, in particular the following: Paisley, James Black (bishop) and Philip Tartaglia. Is this just a problem you have with Wikipedia articles or generally with other Internet things? I find I have to reboot my PC occasionally simply to clear out the memory of various Wikipedia pages that I've been editing - so rebooting your PC might fix this. Paisley is a fairly large article at 31k so if you are on a slow line you will find it takes time to open and save Philip Tartaglia should be quicker. ϢereSpielChequers 12:42, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Southern Cross Expedition - Hut image

I see you have added the image of Borchgrevink's hut to the article. You must be wondering why I didn't use such an obvious Commons image in the first place. The answer lies in the peer review, during which I removed this (it was my lead image) on the advice of User:Elcobbola, who had doubts about it (see peer review). Hi, I've now had a look at the Peer review and the concern was about the legitimacy of the photo as a couple of other photos by that poster had had warnings and been taken down. I'm not an expert in copyright, however looking at the contribs by that user there are a bunch of other photos they've posted which are still here, and having googled them I think we should take that photo as having been posted in good faith. One that may be up your street

When wanting to search Hanna Schwarz's name being misspelt as Schwartz (one page hit) and wondering who else may be suject to the same problem, I typed in Scwartz by mistake. This got 11 hits. Ive resolved 8 to Schwartz and two to Schwarz and I think I know what the other should be, but the reference is to a 1972 paper only cited online by the wiki page in qustion and its clones. I'm sure you could entertain yourself for months sorting the Schwartzs from the Schwarzs, if you wanted.--Peter cohen (talk) 19:15, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Peter, I think that would need someone far more into genealogy than I am. I suspect that once you go back a century or two you would find that some people used both spellings, and if there a dialect differences between say Deutsch and SwissDeutsch spellings people may have switched spellings when they moved towns. I'm in a reformer rather than a revolutionary - if you have something dysfunctional sometimes the best thing is to change it bit by bit, until it has evolved into something better. My problem is that someone from your IP address is making edits such as this. The reason why I tracked down the company who supplied that IP address is so that any victims of abuse from that IP know where to complain to, and also so that whoever is making those edits knows that they are doing it publicly and can easily be reported to their parents or school (or if adult to the Police). I haven't restored the warning messages because you've obviously seen them, but I have restored the details about your IP address so that if there are any similar incidents in the future they can be dealt with more easily. There seems to be an anomaly between this article and that of William de Redvers, 5th Earl of Devon, is it possible that Falkes married the widow of an heir to the earldom who predeceased his father the 5th Earl? William de Redvers, 5th Earl of Devon puts the fifth Earls death in Sept 1217 and his son's a year earlier in Sept 1216. There is also a dispute about the numbering of the Earls, can I suggest we consult user:Pmanderson on this?

I'm a little rusty on all this; but the fundamental problem is that the numbering of the Earls will differ between sources. They weren't numbered at the time, and some genealogists count Richard de Redvers as first Earl, while others say he was never an Earl at all. So this marriage made de Breauté ‘the equal of an earl’[2] as he was regent for the Earldom until his stepson the 6th Earl reached his majority". Would that fit in with the sources that you two used? Hi WSP, I took a look at list of demons but I am afraid I don't have much to offer you in improving it. I had no idea there were so many named demons! In Catholic Theology I think that the seven deadly sins: Pride, Gluttony, Sloth, Jealousy, Vanity, Greed and Lust are sometimes presented in Art as actual demons instead of just vices so maybe that will help. Dear Zahd, no objection to you moving this discussion there, but I would caution you that your view that mothers rights are not relevant to the subject is liable to be perceived as strongly anti-choice. If IVF technology had improved to the point where babies could be brought to term without implantation into a woman then yes it would be possible to abort a fetus without a woman having an abortion. But as far as I'm aware the science isn't that advanced yet. Can I suggest you read some of the prochoice literature and try to understand their view, remember what you are trying to achieve is a neutral article. Oh dear, I'd been hoping that this would go quiet once the election was over. You may be right, question is would admins block if this went to AIV on just a 4im? And would it make a difference to the vandal as the last three warnings all went to separate IP addresses - I suspect the Red Diaper vandal has learned to reset their IP after almost every attack, and is not sticking around to see our messages. I hadn't been bothering to look up the IP addresses, but having now looked up the four IP addresses used in the last five attacks they are all from "Qwest Communications Corporation, Denver CO USA", if we wanted to escalate this we could put a tailored {{whois}} message on Talk:Red diaper baby. The latest got a block after I think their third attack. It's possible they haven't even twigged how they reset their IP address, and just do it accidentally from time to time. As long as they stick to the one article I doubt that LTA would help - we just need a few eyes on this article, and as you said maybe more of a hair trigger, so we go to AIV and get blocks in after fewer edits. Well I'm not sure I'd want to be taking an article there myself as some reviewers can be a tad abrupt; but I just read the ones I find interesting, do a bit of copy editing and ask pedantic points where I don't understand things, this was a good example. So far I've found it an extremely congenial interesting place. I find the authors usually very tolerant of ignorant questions from people who know nothing about their pet subject, especially if you fix typos etc and only query what you perceive as anomalies. I've had one review where I put in a lot of time and the editor disappeared, and another rather controversial topic where the author and that articles regulars were so used to defending their article against vandalism that they were over-defensive with any suggestions from reviewers. But overall its the place on Wikipedia where I currently most enjoy spending time. ϢereSpielChequers 15:42, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Fair point, but sad that some people react so negatively to change. To me it seem fairly obvious that one consequence of increasing the number of editors who can edit protected pages will be that more pages will be protected, a bit like the invention of the sewing machine lead to more complicated clothing designs that needed more stitches. I like the idea that anyone can edit, and I see lots of good edits from IPs, but there are contentious pages which attract vandals, and complex subjects which shouldn't be edited without reading the talk page, and for these semi or full protection seems to me a good idea. Hmmm that's a bit complicated, but as a lapsed atheist with nephews young enough to believe in Father Christmas I will be celebrating the Solstice tomorrow, Xmas with family on the 25th and Hogmanay with friends. The 2009 WikiCup will begin on January 1, 2009. The first round will run through March 31, 2009. For more information on this tournament, read the "about" section on the main WikiCup page.

This year, we have a different system in calculating points. At User:Garden/WikiCup/Submissions, you will find information about submitting your article (and other) work to earn points. Each contestant will have their own individual subpage for submitting completed work to us.

This year, User:ST47 will also be running one of his bots to calculate mainspace edits and read your submission subpages to calculate the point values you receive based on our scoring chart.
