No, it wasn't a virus; it was a m:vandalbot. I've already reverted all of its edits, so everything should be back to normal. Well, presumably the number of eyes watching will increase in proportion to Wikipedia's growth, so with any hope it shouldn't be an issue. As it stands, most vandalism comes from anonymous editors: this is actually a helpful fact, because it means vandalism can be caught faster by filtering out logged-in edits from Special:Recentchanges. -- Hadal 05:45, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Albuquerque, New Mexico[edit]

The whole reason "Professional Schools" is a section is because of a strongly active wikipedian who constantly added New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics into the body of the article in odd places. The entire text of the article was a copyvio, so it was deleted, but from time to time the user comes back and re-adds the link. I'm not opposed to leaving the professional schools section, but the problem is that that list could easily exceed several hundred schools state-wide. It's only city-wide, so there can't be many more than a few dozen of these. --ABQCat 19:12, 7 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to discourage consistancy as a reason for information removal... however, in this case the argument for removal really doesn't matter. The links are dead, and the section provides little value as it's currently written. If you'd like to add some descriptive text to the section (e.g. "Professional schools provide professional training for occupations which typically do not require a college degree. Upon completion of the programs offered at these schools, students are typically presented with a certificate of completion. Some examples of professions which require professional training are hairdressers, massage therapists, chiropractors, as well as many medical and veteranary occupations. Professional schools located in Albuquerque are listed below.") Then you've provided value to the section and the text you've added might encourage someone to add a professional school to the list or create an article for one of the schools already listed. --ABQCat 20:23, 7 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, transwiki means to move to another wiki - usually Wiktionary, Wikisource, or Wikicookbook. It should be obvious from context which one is meant. Bicknell, Utah[edit]

Don, please take more care with your edits, the Bicknell changes you made are full of poor spelling, poor grammar, mis-information and redundant or inappropriate information.

Fragmented sentence:

"In 1914 Thomas W. Bicknell (1834-1925), a wealthy eastern historian and educator from Providence, Rhode Island, he was the State of Rhode Island's Education Commissioner, and founder of the National Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims."

Spelling:

"comprimise" (that whole sentence is hard to read)

Inappropriate:

This is in fact true but is not a useful fact, Cathedral Valley is a very remote area of Capitol Reef and the trail to get from there to Bicknell takes you over a two track dirt road that is impassable due to snow or mud for 6-8 months of the year. It might be better to tell how far Bicknell is from the CR visitor center. (It's 17m W).

" Teasdale Tithing Office and Granary" - Teasdale is a place in its own right though it doesn't yet have a wiki page.

Redundant:

Since you have to go through Provo to get to Bicknell from SLC no need to list both.

Inaccurate:

Maps[edit]

Your maps on the Sakhalin projects are great, except most cartographers will tell you two (maybe three) important map components are missing. If you make maps in the future please try to include lat/long (which will help users find the place on the world map), a scale bar (I think it's a bit redundant with lat-long info; 1 degree lattitude is 60 nautical miles), and a north arrow. Just to let you know... we do have maps of all the Republic/Ireland counties produced. Still working on similar ones for the Northern Ireland locales that will be agreeable to the UK people. See gallery at Wikipedia:Irish Wikipedians' notice board/map gallery. These maps are a terrific resource - I'm going to go at once and create articles about the other islands near Inishturk and Inishboffin, one of the most interesting is Caher Island. Rush rocks[edit]

Yeah, I really like Rush too. I remember I had this buddy, Rick, who really loved Rush; he had all of their albums and everything. He wanted to be a drummer, like Neale Peart. We would always listen to Rush when driving around in his car. Rush never needed to release singles; they were very sucessful with their albums and concerts. The big issue is that this one editor keeps listing Rush as a "one-hit wonder", because, get this, Rush only had one of their very few singles hit the top 40 ("New World Man"). You know, if Rush was going to be remembered for just one song, it would be "Tom Sawyer" or "Subdivisions" (my favorite). But they won't be. They will be remembered for being one of the biggest rock groups of all time. I remember having long discussion with some other buddies about whether Rush could become a four-person band or not; we decided that Rush had to be just three people (and Rush agreed; they never became a four-piece act; each person in Rush is like having two mortal musicians in any other band).

The issue is that one or two editors insist that a band is a one hit wonder if they only had 1 single hit the top 40, and no other factors (such as selling millions of records) are relevant. The editor in question won't even discuss the issue on talk; the last time he tried listing Rush as a "one hit wonder", he tried to hide the edit by having no edit summary and marking the edit as being "minor". The closest I have come to a discussion on the subject is over at Talk:1990s_One-hit_wonders_in_the_United_States.

You know, I really like the line about love songs. Because, you know, people getting all romantic results in some really abusive relationships. Love songs are all a fantasy. One love song comes to mind--"How would I live without you". Women in abusive relationships hear something like that and they think they have to stay in the relationship. But, I'm diverging. I just think Rush has a very specific vision about the kind of music they want to make, and that vision is not top 40. The kinds of people that call Rush a "one-hit wonder" are what I call top-40 junkies; to them the be all and end off of music is the Billboard top 40; you're a nobody if you don't chart. Wikipedia has a problem with outspoken minorities controlling certain subsections of the encyclopedia; I feel the kind of person who sees the top 40 as being the be all and end all of music is very good at giving us a list of everyone who has charted once on the top 40, but is not-so-good at seeing whether a given charting band is a "One Hit Wonder"; a "One Hit Wonder" is a very subjective thing. I don't think anyone who was not comatose in the 1970s, 1980s, or even 1990s can say Rush was a one-hit wonder with a straight face. Samboy 05:07, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Is This an Article That Should be Deleted?[edit]

U.S. presidential election, 2002 (fictional). I just don't see the point of putting fictional plots from TV show and movies. Do you know how many fictional elections there have been over the last 70 years in movies and TV? Hard to say. I have never watched The West Wing, so I cannot really verify the fiction there. Regarding episode guides in general, it has been common to either keep them or merge them together to one big article for an entire season (although they often get some delete votes). I think the Ed, Edd and Eddy episodes were all merged together. It depends to a large extent on the length of the article. Sjakkalle (Check!) 07:58, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I just don't see the point of seperate articles. I don't watch West Wing either, but making up seperate articles for elections, or characters, I don't get. It would be like making up articles about fictional compaines, like a trucking company from The Wire, or The Pacific and Orient Line from an episode of the Rockford Files. It just seems to me like someone spends to much time in make-believe land, to write articles about fictional events, people, etc. Now, if it becomes part of "Americana" or something that becomes a common in Classic Liturate, I could see it. Like Robin Hood, or Zoro, King Arthur, The Lone Ranger, these I could accept, but one election from a TV show. A show like the West Wing could have an election every other episode, are we going to put everyone of those in? WikiDon

Cherniere Energy[edit]

I have also looked at the company and at present it is a small player. I agree the LNG article is not the place to sell investments. I see the foe has started to change the piece about transportation safety. Working within the industry I have left this alone as it was NPOV or at least did not conclude. It now does and I don't agree. There are a number of instances of 'spills' of butane and propane particularly in boats leading to total destruction. This family of gases are heavier than air and spread. There are serious concerns about the impact should a large quantity of gas be leaked into a closed bay where it would not disperse quickly and where its continued presence would be a serious hazard. Whether the mixture is explosive or not is also not the issue. There was a serious accident in Spain where a propane tanker release ignited next to a camp site. Most people died from internal burns to their lungs. I'm certain Shell have done research on this as I have seen film of experiments. NBA Draft ideas[edit]

I apologize for not responding sooner! No, it's not anything you said at all; it's just my tendency to let things slip. <g> I have some ideas...

  • Positions: Definitely value-added. When I've been working on drafts, I've been adding the positions I reasonably know about.
  • Draft headings: As you mentioned, there's no consistency. I just surfed over to the 2005 Draft section of the NBA.com, and I noticed that their draft board uses "Round 1" and "Round 2". As it turns out, that's what I've been using in the first place. My vote is "Round 1" etc., but it's not a strong preference.

Unless it's bigger than 32K (if it's bigger than that, it will be shown when editing the page), the only way I know of is to copy the wiki source of the article to a text editor on your computer and check the length with it. --cesarb 23:58, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Still haven't found out which Payne the gray is named for, though. I'm an artist, myself, and hoping to work on entries for a bunch of Alaskan artists (seems to be hardly any in Wikipedia--nor any categories of artists by state, so I suspect that was decided to be a no-no). National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum[edit]

I see you changed the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum back to say it was originally called the National Cowboy Musuem. Do you know exactly when that was? I looked up some old newspaper articles from 1955. They said when the trustees met in Denver in 1954 to choose a site it was called the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and when they met in 1955 to dedicate the site in Oklahoma City it was the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. By the grand opening in 1965 it was the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center. The articles only said C.A. Reynolds first started promoting it in 1947, they didn't say if he had a name for it then so maybe that was when. Frank101 03:26, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... that suggests a misunderstanding of the notion of sexism, but that doesn't surprise me. More relevantly, worries about sexism should affect the way that we use language ourselves, but our reporting of it. I was correcting a grammatical error. I think you are misreading the sentence. Compare:

This paragraph could probably use more of a re-write, but I was correcting what seemed to be a grievous grammatical mistake.

Text in italics at the top of the article is used to indicate likely sources of confusion, a sort of in-article disambig. I believe you may be the only person to have been confused by this. Kabocha[edit]

Saying that Japanese people use "kabocha" to mean either what English speakers call a "kabocha" or what English speakers call a "pumpkin" isn't the same as saying that English speakers call kabocha "Japanese pumpkin". I may have phrased it unclearly, but I think it's a valid point to make in the kabocha article. What do you say to adding something like that in the third paragraph?

Nimmitabel and the Monaro region[edit]

Hi - just in relation to Nimmitabel, New South Wales in particular, you might like to be aware that we have a policy for automatically disambiguating Australian place names. Nimmitabel: In relation to driving distances, as stated in the edit summary, I think it adds little value to the knowledge of Nimmitabel as a place to know that it is 1277 km east of Adelaide. The Snowy Mountains are in the way for starters and you will see an awful lot of other places in between. Bega and Cooma are the only sensible reference points plus the highways it is on. Cooma is referenced by location back to Canberra. Sydney and Melbourne are not in the picture. If a reader from Kansas wants to know something about Nimmitabel, there is a lot more that they are going to want to know before a distance from a city to which the town has no relation. To give an example from your country, Scyene, Dallas, Texas does not have references to driving distances from Seattle, New York and Los Angeles, or even Boston - cities that feature prominently in the minds of Australians. I appreciate your frustration about wasting time. My edit was not to do with space but readability and logic. The driving distance from Cooma and Bega were incorporated earlier in the article. Nimmitabel is a very small town and I could not commend it as the sole reason for a detour from the Hume or Princes Highways between Sydney and Melbourne. I dont like seing dogs that are overweight either, especially young dogs. It ads such an immense amount of strain on the bones. Mount Cavendish[edit]

Hi WikiDon - I've added a couple of lines to the article (and categorised it). I haven't got any photos of Mt. Cavendish that I know of, and since it's about 250 miles north of here, it may be some time before I'm able to get any. I'd suggest putting a request on Wikipedia:New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board, see if there are any Christchurch editors who could get a picture for it. Dams along the Columbia, redux[edit]

Don't worry about the dams of the Columbia Basin. That might be a worthwhile article in itself ... but doesn't wikipedia have size limitations? Something in the back of my fuzzy head says it is one of the most dammed river drainages on planet Earth. Outside Estacada where I was raised, we had River Mill, Faraday, Cazadero and North Fork all within walking or easy biking distance.
