Fair use rationale for File:Espnstar.com 2011-01-13.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Espnstar.com 2011-01-13.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 08:43, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
History merges
[edit]Hi there - BTW, I forgot to say, the way to avoid having to need a history merge is to move the page by using the move tab at the top. The move automatically creates a redirect. Sometimes a move is not technically possible, in which case listing it at WP:RM is best. Cheers --Mkativerata (talk) 20:03, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

The DYK project (nominate) 06:05, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
The article Adnan Yaakob has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. –Dream out loud (talk) 00:49, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Lolowah bint Faisal Al Saud
[edit]I might be mistaken, but it looks like Lolowah bint Faisal Al Saud's just a little short of x5 expansion for DYK, though it's clear you added substantially to it. - If you look at all the articles on Malay people in Wikipedia, there's no bin or binti in the article title, because it reflects how they are mentioned by news organisations per WP:COMMONNAME. There's currently a proposal to make that an explicit guideline (over here), although there has been no progress on that front by the WikiProject Malaysia community. - Yk3 talk · contrib 05:36, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
- P.S. I'd just like you to know that {{Infobox Monarch}} is more or less obsolete in English Wikipedia. Use {{Infobox Royalty}} instead. Also, for the articles about the Undangs and the Tunku Besar of Tampin, {{Infobox Nobility}} is probably more appropriate, since they're not really monarchs or royalty. - Yk3 talk · contrib 05:45, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hmmm... I think I disagree somewhat, but more on that later ;) Thanks for the notification about the proposal for guidelines, and okay on the infobox. I also just saw this on Google of all places! Perhaps we can collaborate? I recently made pages for the undang luak, I'm just doing the last one for Johol now (check my contribs for the rest). Please don't take out the patronyms until I can establish which is standard. I've only ever heard them written with the patronyms, so I'll have to look into it further. Wikipedia's policy on YouTube linking
[edit]Hi. :) Thanks for working to improve Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. I'm afraid, though, that the youtube video I've just removed can't be used on the English language Wikipedia as it is clearly not hosted by the news agency itself but was uploaded by somebody named "dunebasher1971" who has hosted a diverse assemblage of copyrighted content on YouTube ([1]). Wikipedia's policy (as set out at WP:LINKVIO) does not permit us to add links to copies of work hosted in violation of copyright. Certainly, you can cite the original news source, and if you can locate the video at the original news source can link to it there, but I'm afraid that the Youtube video in question just won't work under policy. I've removed the link, but put a "fact" tag after the information it sourced to invite a usable reference. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:58, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- I kinda knew that using a YouTube video was a little sketchy, but it was intended more as a footnote than a reference. Thanks for explaining. - Yk3 talk ~ contrib 20:01, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- No problem. :) I don't know who had been removing it or why, but the article is on my watchlist for some reason I've long since forgotten, so it caught my eye when the IP blanked the content, and I realized the issue with it then. It's an inconvenience, I know. Too bad they didn't identify the news program that the footage came from. :/ --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:09, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Malay ruler titles
[edit]Just for your thoughts, the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong is at Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu. Do you think the "of Terengganu" is important enough to be in the title? Currently Mizan Zainal Abidin is simply a redirect, so there is clearly no problem with disambiguation. WP:ROYALTY has no guidelines for Malaysian monarchs unfortunately. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 08:50, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, "of Terengganu" doesn't seem necessary, except to maintain consistency. Wikipedia's guideline on naming royals tends to be followed strictly, e.g. Juan Carlos I (the only known one) redirects to Juan Carlos I of Spain. Elizabeth II is left as it is because she is queen of more than 10 countries. Based on the current convention, I suggest we just leave it.
- Frankly I find the naming of royals from Malaysia in Wikipedia downright weird. The system they use is based on European convention, where the regnal name and the title can be separated: although the British queen is commonly referred to as Queen Elizabeth II, her formal shorthand style and title is Her Majesty The Queen (of the UK and others), while her regnal name is Elizabeth II. For Malaysian monarchs, there is always either a "Sultan" or "Tuanku" prefixed to the regnal name, but in strict adherence to #1 at WP:NCROY#Sovereigns, the (usually inseparable) honorific prefix is removed, leaving articles with awkward titles such as Azlan Shah of Perak, Sharafuddin of Selangor, etc. I never use the article titles in text inlines, because I don't think they're right. - Yk3 talk ~ contrib 12:11, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I did not think my revision was POV. I was trying to correct the promotional language used in that article, including the overuse of titles like "Dr" or "PhD" (which I clarified). Furthermore, at least one major contributor to that article has admitted to working in the office of the politician of whom the biography details.

Could you please force the IP user to use discussion
[edit]I actually do not mind that much which revision is on while we talk it out with editors, but what I do mind is senseless antagonism and reverting an addition for no reason other than "it's been expanded by LGDP again!" and doing nothing to save the content of an article. All I want is discussion. [2] However the IP user generally never returns to discussion after the article of dispute has been restored to his "right version" -- because the IP user has no interest to, and the IP user has no interest in the project. This is why I want to proceed directly to arbitration; the IP places the interest of his possible employer or his personal vendetta over the interests of the project. The IP user does not care about discussion, mediation or policy, if those things do not benefit him, and has currently enjoyed a most extensive lack of scrutiny over its actions. elle vécut heureuse à jamais (be free) 21:14, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Welcome to the Wikipedia Ambassador Program
[edit]Hi YK!
Congratulations! Your application to join the Wikipedia Ambassador Program as an Online Ambassador has been accepted.
First off, I apologize for the following info-dump. If you're wondering how to get started or are wondering what's going on, please contact me.
If you haven't already done so, take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines: Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Guidelines
The "mentorship process" section lays out approximately what will be expected of you as a mentor. If you'd like, you can also volunteer to be the coordinating online ambassador for a class or two.
Please add yourself to the top of the list of available mentors, and note the number of students you think you'd like to mentor next term (it doesn't have to be a final answer, this is just to help with matching students and mentors once the students start getting active) and if you'd like to take on the coordination role for any classes note that as well: Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Mentors (Don't add yourself to the lower "Additional online ambassadors section; that's for ambassadors-in-training and ambassadors who are already mentoring all the students they want to take on.)
To coordinate between Online Ambassadors and Campus Ambassadors, we've been using a Google Group as a mailing list. It's not required, but almost all the ambassadors are on it. Would you like Sage to subscribe you? Email him with your email address if so.
You can also check out the first two ambassador newsletters, which have more detail about what's going on right now. You'll get future editions delivered to your talk page.
If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup.
If you have any questions, please let me know. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 00:11, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Ambassador welcome
[edit]Just want to welcome you as a new Online Ambassador! Thanks for signing up to help with the U.S. Political Parties course with Prof. Shamira Gelbman. With 70 expected students in the course, I was getting a bit anxious waiting for additional assistance. If none was forthcoming after today, I was gonna start kidnapping Ambassadors from other courses! Interview with Wikimedia Foundation
[edit]Hi Yk, I hope you are well. My name is Matthew Roth and I'm a Storyteller working on the 2011 fundraiser with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. In past years, we've relied on Jimbo to carry the bulk of the fundraising weight and he's done very well helping us hit our yearly funding targets. This year, however, we're broadening the scope and reach of the fundraiser by incorporating more voices and different people on the funding banners and appeals that will start running full-time on November 7th. We're testing new messages and finding some really great results with editors and staff members of the Foundation. You can see the current progress of the tests here. I'm curious if you would want to participate in an interview with me as part of this process? The interviews usually last 60 minutes and involve a number of questions about your personal editing experiences, as well as general questions about Wikipedia and its impact in the world. Please let me know your thoughts by emailing mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Thanks! Matthew (WMF) 00:10, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

- @Sdsummer: Sarcasm works to no effect here. At the time of the revert, how was I supposed to know you were the author of the article? Why should I believe you anyway? Even if so, do you think it is appropriate to copy and paste an entire article into an encyclopedia article? Even if so, you did not attribute the source, which is required in Wikipedia, whether you are the author of the source or not.
- If you want to contribute positively to Wikipedia, go forth and add a summary of your newspaper article to the James Brown article and don't forget provide a citation, preferably with a link to the article. —Yk Yk Yk talk ~ contrib 04:12, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
