WikiCup 2011 March newsletter

We are half way through round two of the WikiCup, which will end on 28 April. Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H. Poland Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round three is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn and The ed17 01:13, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks to editors who have been helping out at the Requests page and by copy editing articles from the backlog.

Progress report

Remarkable progress was made in reducing the backlog this month, as we now have fewer than 500 articles remaining from 2009. We are well under the 4,000-article mark for the total number remaining in the queue. Since our backlog drives began in May 2010 with 8,323 articles, we have cleared more than 53% of the backlog. A complete list of results and barnstars awarded can be found here. Barnstars will be distributed over the next week. If you enjoyed participating in our event, you may also like to join the Wikification drives, which are held on alternate months to our drives. Their April drive has started.

New coodinators

On March 21, SMasters appointed Chaosdruid (talk) and Torchiest (talk) as Guild coordinators to serve in place of The Utahraptor, who recently stepped down. Please feel free to contact any coordinator if you have any questions or need assistance.

Hi

I see you have changed Lang-he-n back [1]. Since this template is intended for fixing Hebrew text on Internet Explorer, it should not affect users of other browsers. With your revert, it does again.

I have carefully set my browser to using a serif Hebrew font, but now, text in Lang-he-n disrupts my browser settings and appears in Microsoft Sans Serif, a font I do not like at all.

I understand that Kwami's merger of Lang-he-n into he was not a good idea. But how about the following:

1. Create a new class="script-hebrew-n" in Lang-he-n:

<span dir="rtl" class="script-hebrew-n" font-size:125%;' lang="he" xml:lang="he">{}</span>‎{{#if:{}|, lit. {lit}}}

2. Move the explicit font definitions from Lang-he-n to MediaWiki:Common.css/WinFixes.css:

.script-hebrew-n {
    font-family:"SBL Hebrew", david, narkisim, "Microsoft Sans Serif";
}

Like this, nothing changes for Internet Explorer users, but users of other browsers no longer suffer from this Internet Explorer fix. -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 11:54, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

I see now that the problem is not only IE, but also Firefox on Mac OS X. I have filed a bug for Firefox: Bug 648248 - Buggy Hebrew fallback font on Mac OS X (you might want to subscribe/comment/rate this bug so it gets more importance and will be fixed sooner).
As far as I can see, Safari on Mac OS X and Chrome on Mac OS X have a correct display of Hebrew text. Is this correct? Apart from Windows browsers and Firefox on Mac OS X, are other browsers affected as well?
In the future, when the problem of Firefox on Mac OS X is solved, the explicit font specifications should be moved to MediaWiki:Common.css/WinFixes.css so they no longer adversely affect other users (as they keep doing now).
In the meantime, I beg you to please reinstall the class="hebrew-script" in Lang-he-n. This class, which is already present in will allow users to fix the incoherent display of Hebrew text at least for themselves, while no general fix is possible. Or much better yet, delete the font list from Lang-he-n and instead include within Lang-he-n!
I do not understand why Lang-he-n and have different font lists. What is the reason for that? It just leads to incoherent display of Hebrew text, which just looks plain awful. This incoherence is especially striking all four fonts of Lang-he-n reoccur in , and the first three fonts in both templates are identical! So why then are the font lists different? If there is no particular reason, then I strongly recommend that the font lists be harmonized so that there no longer is inconsistent display of Hebrew text. The best thing to do would be transcluding into Lang-he-n, so the font list is only configured in one place.
An illustration for the current inconsistency of Hebrew text display:
lang-he-n Hebrew: בֵּית‎‎ בֵּית
בֵּית
no markup בֵּית בֵּית
On Firefox on Mac OS X, this has three different fonts, Microsoft Sans Serif, Times New Roman and the buggy font Arial Hebrew:
With regard to the font list in , I don't think DejaVu Sans should precede Microsoft Sans Serif and Lucida Grande, since it is less complete (I don't know about David, Narkisim, Ezra SIL SR or FrankRuehl). -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 14:08, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Font size is not an issue here. Lang-he-n and specify exactly the same font size.
The issue is that Hebrew text display is inconsistent. This is because lang-he-n does not use the same font list like . The best way to fix this is by changing lang-he-n so it no longer defines any fonts by itself, but uses the fonts from . I think that in this case, transclusion is clearly preferrable. By transcluding within lang-he-n, we minimize the risk of future inconsistent Hebrew display. For the transclusion, lang-he-n has to be changed to the following:
Hebrew: {{script/Hebrew|{}}}{{#if:{}|, lit. {lit}}}<includeonly></includeonly>‎<noinclude> doc Template:Lang-he </noinclude>
I don't know about the display on MSIE. MSIE's inability to correctly choose an appropriate font is well known though. What I didn't know before is that Firefox falls back to a buggy font. -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 15:14, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
I have now taken the liberty of testing the code I have proposed for lang-he-n on a template that is no longer used anywhere: CYchar.
As far as I can see, it works perfectly fine, and it solves the inconsistency of Hebrew text:
בְּרֵאשִׁית, בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים, אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם, וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ.}}
בְּרֵאשִׁית, בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים, אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם, וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ.
Please do any testing on CYchar as you please and then copy the code to lang-he-n. I cannot do this on my own because I am no administrator. It would be great if the display of Hebrew text were no longer as inconsistent as it currently is. -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 17:18, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
If you do not feel comfortable about creating a template transclusion, I can ask Kwami to do it. I hope you have no objections at the proposed change?? It is really an improvement because it makes lang-he-n use the same fonts as , so Hebrew text is no longer displayed inconsistently. -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 16:17, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
It looks like there is progress on the Firefox Bug 648248 - Buggy Hebrew fallback font on Mac OS X! Jonathan Kew has taken an interest in it; I have tried creating a patch. I have proposed the following three fonts as new default fallback fonts for Hebrew text: Lucida Grande, Times New Roman, and Courier New. Do you think these fonts are OK? -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 16:35, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Ynhockey. I am here because I see on the history of several places such as Sarona and HaKirya you have edited. I have been editing some place names in Israel as well and had a concern about Wilhelma, which I put on the talk page and I have communicated the same concerns with the original author on our talk pages. He (or she) disagrees with my thinking on this and I was looking for another opinion. When you find time, will you take a look at the talk page at Wilhelma, Palestine and comment if you are so moved? Thank you. Snakeswithfeet (talk) 16:05, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Do you have any sources that might shed some light on ["Wilhelma Airport"]? Thanks. Zerotalk 00:28, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Multiple IPs removing sourced content from 30 St Mary Axe without explanation

Hi Ynhockey,

A month ago you watchlisted Geography of Israel since multiple IPs were changing measurements without explanation. That article's been fine.

However, 30 St Mary Axe (history) has had multiple IPs removing its sourced "erotic" nicknames with no explanation on Oct 21, Dec 9, Mar 16, 22, Apr 8, 14, and 21. On one of my reverts, my edit summary noted "rv removal without explanation again. All are reliable sources (BBC, Architectural Record (whose June 2004 magazine back issue has an article on the building), and The Spectator". There's no discussion of the subject on the article's talk page and 2 others besides me have reverted the removal over the months, which I just now realized has been going on since last year. Would you semi-protect the article for a period, should I request it from RFPP, or would you suggest another idea? MeekSaffron (talk) 20:49, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Thank you! MeekSaffron (talk) 00:00, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks, Ynhockey.
I think both pictures that you found are decisive !
I wonder why current historians don't comment more on this "emblem" whereas they claim we lack "documents" about the intents of the Arab armies.

Suggested reading

Heya,

I couldn't help but to notice that you have an interest in literature relating to Israel (I haven't taken any user's talkpage off watchlist as I am too lazy), and was thinking you might enjoy some texts by two professors I know (one is an acquaintance, the other is my archaeology mentor) relating to our more... ancient history, but based on archaeology. While it's great to have the State of Israel and learn as much as possible about it (something I must start doing along with my Hebrew studies, but luckily I have an Israeli gf to teach me), it is always good to know our roots. =) So the three works I would suggest you pick up some time are From Eden to Exile and Jerusalem Besieged by Eric H. Cline and The Bible Unearthed by Israel Finkelstein and Niel Silberman. They say Bible on them (mostly because the study is still called biblical archaeology), but it's more examining our history, (which is ofc recorded in the Bible, with, and I don't mean to offend, as this is just my opinion, varying degrees of accuracy depending on how close you are to the reign of Jehoash) through the archaeological record. They're both in English (which doesn't seem problematic), but Finkelstein may have put it out in Hebrew too, not sure. They're both written in a non-boring/actually readable style (if you ever read anything by Amihai Mazar, you'd know what I mean, yeesh). It's absolutely fascinating stuff (and very good stuff for when you get into debates to crush the less informed if you know what I mean. =p), which is why I got into for a degree in the first place. Anyway, you should definitely give them a read some time. =)

Oh yeah, and even though it's very belated: יום העצמות שמח! Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie Say Shalom! 08:15, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

................. פארוק (talk) 22:06, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

You speak arabic?

Does this link say that "Majdal Shams" is directly Aramaic? or that it originates from Aramaic? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 19:24, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

You could ask User:Rafy. He speaks both Arabic and Aramaic. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 20:00, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Arieh Sharon

Hi - you tagged a "clarification needed" in Arieh Sharon. What exactly are you looking for? (please answer on the Arieh Sharon talk page, so that other editors might help, if they know.) thanks --Sreifa (talk) 11:16, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Also - did you write Beit Hanoun wedge? or maybe separated it from a different article? there's a clarification needed that you both wrote and tagged.--Sreifa (talk) 11:53, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

War over Water

Hi Ynhockey, I'd be glad to cooperate on improving the article. It is an important subject and we can make a fine article out of it, sources are not lacking. I do have time issues though, I do have to put this off for a few weeks at least. Poliocretes (talk) 12:03, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Excelerator

Hello there, I noticed that you removed an "Excelerator" reference for copyright abuse. Could you explain why please? Thanks Andrew BearJam (talk) 19:21, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Yan, Sorry, Jan, I think I got confused (not experienced here) Andrew BearJam (talk) 11:56, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Borrow you for a short while for a very big favour?

Hiya,

If you're still up, could you look at this [category] and all the sub-stuff and maybe put the links to the articles that are not included in the English category? My Hebrew just isn't good enough. It's for something very important. Thanks very much! Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 21:36, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Tel Aviv to Lohamei haGetaot on a Saturday

Heya, I know this is a bit odd and totally not Project-related, but would you happen to know the best way to get to Nahariya (getting from Nahariya is easy) from Tel Aviv on a Saturday? I figure you might know, being a Haifen and all (or are you really a hyphen -? :p) I am heading to Tel Aviv on Thursday from the kibbutz, and then need to be back by Saturday night. Last I remember, the trains are not running on Saturday until 22:00, and so that leaves sherutim. You wouldn't happen to know whether I am wrong about the trains or what have you and what time the sheruts are running till, would you? I do not want to have to take a taxi cab all the way to Lohame haGeta'ot. Scratch that, I refuse to be an amerikai friyar and pay some ganav cabbie 700 NIS for anything. I won't be able to reply until 14:00 tomorrow as I am about to go to bed (I wake up at 04:00 and then dig until 12:30). Thanks very much Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 16:44, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

Question...

When giving me feedback on the WikiProject Judaism Invite template, you told me to "go over the member list and set aside inactive people." I'm a little confused what you meant by that, also, can I delete users on the list who are not properly linked (their usernames appear in red)? Magister Scienta talk 17:59, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Could you check the coordinates there? The map contradicts the description in the article. nableezy - 14:09, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Never mind, I think the coordinates that had been in the article were correct; new ones were added to an infobox. I replaced the new with the old, but if you want to still check then great. nableezy - 14:11, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Category query

You mention Category:Jews in Ottoman and British Palestine was discussed back in 2007. Do you remember where? Thanks. Chesdovi (talk) 12:21, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Region != West Bank

Re: this, I wasn't sure about those regions. What started as one infobox cleanup may have created a mess for the regions... Don't worry, you don't need to clean up after me. I'll check through my edits and change the regions back.

  • from 13:50, 9 July 2011 (diff | hist) Sal'it ‎ (fix infobox) (top) [rollback]
  • to 18:11, 9 July 2011 (diff | hist) Shim'a ‎ (region) (top) [rollback]

This location map has as its alt text "x is located in Israel". The map is used for a number of places that are not in Israel (eg Beitar Illit). Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? nableezy - 16:53, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Masada oath

Hi Ynhockey, do you remember me? Well, I'm not here for that reason (I shelved the issue for the moment), but to ask you one question. Do you know if the IDF is still doing that oath at Masada? I'm working on the Spanish version of Masada, and I need one recent source about that oath. Thank you so much, again. Kordas (sínome!) 00:44, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Israel diplomatic relations map

With reference to your request, I have updated and revised the above map which is now here. Apart from adding South Sudan, I have made quite a few other changes. Davshul (talk) 11:57, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

reflist

I put a couple of refs in the body of the text of the article, Carmit. I've always seen full refs (in other articles) placed within the text. You substituted a "ref name=" in the text and moved the full ref down under the "References" subheading within double braced "Reflist|refs=....". What's the difference? Is this a new standard? Is it just a matter of style or is it better? Please advise. --@Efrat (talk) 14:48, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Do you think the subject the article covers is notable enough for the English Wikipedia? Since I know you have a lot of knowledge in the field, I would appreciate any help you could provide in the improvement of the current state of the article, in such a way that it would meet the Wikipedia standards, and/or if you disapprove of it, I would appreciate if you could post an honest opinion on the subject in the talk page of the article. TheCuriousGnome (talk) 16:13, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Good intentions

Hi Yan,

I fail to see the good intentions of your friend Jayjg coming into play in Talk:Beta Israel. Plenty of editors have expressed their opinion that the relevant section should either be removed or entirely rewritten. By your advice I've suggested to bring the endless debate to a fruitful conclusion by rewriting it myself. I thought there was an agreement on that at his talk page. Now your friend sets me deadlines I did not agree to and pretends he doesn't see the other editors who disagree with him.

I would appreciate it if you could step in to end this childish behaviour. We're here to write articles, not to win arguments. Thanks, ליאור • Lior (talk) 06:31, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Inspired by this article I recently split and expanded, I decided to create similar articles on the other most dominant groups in Israel. Do you think this article should be split into two or do you think it is better to keep it as it is? TheCuriousGnome (talk) 17:40, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
