Leone & Lyonetta were listed on your page incorrectly.

I'm Leone's eldest Granddaughter Susan F. Tollemache —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.70.245.71 (talk) 00:39, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reporting and trying to fix this. I have swapped Leone & Lyonetta in the list of children.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 01:46, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism on main page[edit]

I just wanted to inform that there seems to be a vandalized wiki at az.wikipedia.org/, don't know the right place to report it, so I did it here... SF007 (talk) 00:49, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

After a hell of a lot of confusion, I have fixed the vandalism and got a threat too! [2] :) « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 01:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If someone on there could watch my talkpage, Grawp's abusing it... (IP 86.29.141.215) Calvin 1998 (t-c) 01:30, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That was interesting, the IP was blocked by a steward. What language was that Wikipedia? « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 01:44, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Azerbaycan --> language of Azerbaijian?? On a side note, rollback seriously does need to be global - all that manual reverting gets tiresome. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 01:47, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it does, so does being autoconfirmed, because having to undo the edits, and then put in a captcha (sp?) when the undo added back an external link was horrible! :) It took forever. « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 01:49, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The letter C represents the sound /dʒ/ in the Turkish alphabet (and Azerbaijani is a Turkic language) so yes, Azerbaycan is Azerbaijani for Azerbaijani. Olaf Davis | Talk 14:19, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page issues[edit]

Pre-emptive note for anyone recently experiencing issues with the Main Page. An error was made to MediaWiki:Common.css, which caused the page to appear blank. The issue is now resolved. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 02:12, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Prod an orphaned image?[edit]

How do you prod an orphaned image? I did one to Image:Chess pieces.png, and it says to not prod images. Bubba73 (talk), 02:28, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The file is on the Commons rather than on Wikipedia locally. Someone created the page for something, leaving a bluelink here, so I deleted it, leaving the Commons image. Prod's are only used for the Mainspace, hence the error. If they're free and on the Commons, there is no need to delete orphaned images, but that's something for them to consider if you wish for deletion. Hope that helps. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 02:33, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks. I didn't realize it was in Commons, I'll leave it alone. Bubba73 (talk), 02:35, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This one Image:Chess bad bishop.png is no longer needed either. The Chess Project has replaced such images of positions with a diagram template. Can you delete it? Bubba73 (talk), 02:39, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Image deletions should probably go through WP:IFD first, someone might actually need that image. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 02:43, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Probably more trouble than it is worth. Wikipedia doesn't need it because we do chess diagrams differently now. Thanks. Bubba73 (talk), 15:24, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How up to date / accurate is Help:Category?[edit]

How up to date and accurate is the information in Help:Category?

It does not seem to mention the construct:

[[Category:category name |sort position text |text to appear on category page]]

It seems to have it wrong on categorisation by template inclusion, which DOES trickle though in the background, and is NOT dependant on page re-edits.

There are a non trivial number of red links.

Or have I missed something ?

Peet Ern (talk) 03:14, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I try tried here [[Category:Test category|sort position text |text to appear on category page]], but it does not seem to work, is this something new? --Patrick (talk) 04:36, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A better place to ask this question would be on WP:VPT. I tried searching there with {{Google custom}}:
Search the Village pump (technical) for: category sort key text to appear 2008
but nothing came up with that particular search which seems to relate to this feature you mention. Of course this does not eliminate the possibility that someone discussed the feature using different synonyms. --Teratornis (talk) 17:15, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a furfy - See Georgia Capitol Police on Category:Specialist police departments of the United States which is not actually an article page but a redirect page. The actual page has the above, but ignored, category construct in it. Ronnam (talk) 12:46, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the list of templates?[edit]

If I want someone to explain an unusual word in their edit, where is the list of templates for me to find the explain template? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaiwhakahaere (talkcontribs)

Possibly {{Clarifyme}}? Found this on Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup which I accessed via Wikipedia:Template messages.--217.171.129.71 (talk) 04:09, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm...sorry, I hadn't realised until now there was an {{explain}} template. Odd that I can't find it on any relevant list of templates.--217.171.129.71 (talk) 04:20, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
{{Google custom}} does not find any documentation of the {{Explain}} template there:
That is almost certainly because {{Explain}} is not a messagebox template. Instead it generates Mouseover text. --Teratornis (talk) 17:22, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Password reset requests[edit]

I've been receiving temporary password emails for my account every once in a while, and was wondering whether this was a common sort of attack, or if it is something that is only directed against my account (which was usurped a while ago). --Constantine (talk) 04:16, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've never really heard of it, even though I suppose it's possible if you're a popular user for vandals :) Calvin 1998 (t-c) 04:19, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's a fairly common tactic from some disruptive users. It's rather annoying but there's no real danger. Raven4x4x (talk) 04:23, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

article title capitalization[edit]

Is it possible to change the capitalization of an article title after it has been created? I created an article entitled "Tunelab Music" and I would like to modify the title to "TuneLab Music" with a capital L. Is that possible once the article has been created?

thanks, Sox5452 (talk) 04:48, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At the top of the article there are tabs for the following:
  • Article
  • Discussion
  • Edit this page
  • History
  • Move
  • Watch
Voilà! − Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 04:56, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We use "Move" because that's what it technically is: the server is moving the page data from one title to another, it means the same thing as Rename though. Just click the tab, enter your new title and reason, and it'll rename you're article, making the old page a redirect to the old one. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 05:07, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The "move" tab will appear when your account is autoconfirmed, meaning it it is at least 4 days old and has made at least 10 edits. Until then (2 days left for you) you cannot move pages, but somebody else has done it for you. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:18, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This page you have posted to is for questions about using Wikipedia, as announced prominently at the top of the page. For knowledge questions such as yours, please visit the miscellaneous section of the reference desk. Edit Peru Page[edit]

Minor edit needed to Peru page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peru

Population density indicates that Peru is ranked 183rd. It's actually 193rd as listed on the "List of countries by population density" page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population_density

I spent a significant amount of time looking for a way to make this edit on my own. I'm very new to this. Can one not edit protected/semi-protected pages?

Let me know and I'll make the appropriate edit to the edit pages and protection policy pages.

Of course, maybe I just missed it. In that case, my apologies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chiefiemh (talkcontribs) 14:22, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In order to edit semi-protected pages, your account needs to be auto-confirmed, which means you need to be active for at least 4 days and have made at least ten edits. I can make the change for you, if you'd like. I hope this helps! TNX-Man 14:25, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quick look up Number of train station in specific area is created[edit]

How to quick look up for number of trian station in specific articles created, without manual very slow calcalte? Can category available to see?

e.g. How many train stations in China or Japan? How has percentage of Article related to a train station in China has already created? Thanks very much. RushdimIDlike (talk) 14:40, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You might be able to do something like this with one of the tools under WP:EIW#Query. --Teratornis (talk) 17:08, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just made Portal:Afghanistan and it seems to be going fine. Just a few more things to do and it would be acceptable. However, I don't know how to change the colour of the title bar at the top of the boxes. It also seems that the wikiprojects section won't go in to the right hand side column. Thank you. Sepasgozaram!Ardeshire Babakan (talk) 15:45, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can edit the title bar properties on Portal:Afghanistan/box-header. Let me go look at the column problem. --tiny plastic Grey Knight 15:56, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I got it on the right-hand-side, but there's a space above it because of how your boxes are laid out; do you want me to help you rearrange them any or is it OK now? --tiny plastic Grey Knight 16:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you could fix it by rearranging the boxes then great! thanks!Ardeshire Babakan (talk) 16:07, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Show/hide box[edit]

I have a large amount of userboxes on my page, so I am looking for either of the following to save space:

  • A box that "hides" the userboxes unless "show" is clicked, to conserve room on the page;
  • A box that holds all the UBXs and is able to scroll up and down.

Thanks in advance, —Mizu onna sango15Discuss 16:07, 23 July 2008 (UTC).[reply]

There are loads of different types but no list we can present you...Best thing is to nab one off somebody elses page. --Cameron* 16:17, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would have, had I known any users that had one on there. —Mizu onna sango15Discuss 16:45, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Job Posting site?[edit]

is there a place to post job openings on this site? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anita wambaugh (talkcontribs) 17:43, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a job posting site. Algebraist 17:48, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Try craigslist, monster.com, jobs.com, careerbuilder.com to name a few. – ukexpat (talk) 18:08, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unconfirmed user after 6 days[edit]

I would like to upload an image to the page titled "Jack Speer". It belongs to Ruth Speer, the widow of Jack Speer, and I am acting on her behalf to add it to Wikipedia.

I have been having a very frustrating experience and have searched the FAQs as well as uploaded the image to WikiCommons (only to have it disappear a day later). I have waited for my account to become authorized, and as yet am still not allowed to upload the image.

Someone has told me that Wikipedia provides a service where experienced users help inexperienced users to make certain kinds of edits. I cannot find that service anywhere, although I would very much like to take advantage of it.

Please let me know if there is a specific reason I am not authorized to upload images. I would like to address it as quickly as possible.

Best Regards, J.A. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abercrombiej (talkcontribs) 19:17, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Autoconfirmed status now requires ten edits as well as a four-day-old account. You need to make six more edits to be authorized to upload images. Algebraist 19:24, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The service you may be looking for (where experienced users help new users) is probably Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. − Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 00:48, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

children protective services[edit]

I want to read atricles about department of children protective services in Tennessee and ask questions to other members how can I do that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iamamom64 (talkcontribs) Iamamom64 (talkcontribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.

The Child Protective Services Division of the Tennessee Department of Children's Services is not a notable enough organization to have an article in Wikipedia. I would suggest you check via a search engine such as Google, which will lead you to their official page] and to articles by their supporters and critics. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:30, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
