Have you tried the Computing section of Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in answering knowledge questions there; this help desk is only for questions about using Wikipedia. For your convenience, here is the link to post a question there: click here. I hope this helps. Algebraist 01:17, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mistaken Ip identity[edit]

Resolved
 – ukexpat (talk) 03:04, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When I accessed Wikipedia this afternoon I was told I (i.e. someone using my IP address) had been causing your site problems in August 2008. I bought this computer new from Staples in January 2009. How could I be responsible for something in August 2008? Roger Smith —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.67.139.179 (talk) 02:38, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are not responsible, and no-one has suggested you are. Someone else who previously had the same IP address as you was responsible. You need do nothing about this, but if you intend to use Wikipedia a lot, you might want to create an account to avoid the possibility of such problems in the future. Algebraist 02:44, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You. And thanks for being so prompt! Roger —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.67.139.179 (talk) 02:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • IP addresses are routinely assigned to new machines, so it can happen that your computer gets assigned the IP of someone who vandalized part of Wikipedia in the past before your computer even existed. Creating an account will avoid any potential mistaken identities. - Mgm|(talk) 05:56, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do I request undeletion of a deleted page?[edit]

I am new to Wikipedia and attempted to add a new page today. I thought I did everything right, clicked "save the page" and bookmarked it. When I returned later I received this message: 19:21, 22 March 2009 Kicking222 (talk | contribs) deleted "Las vegas and the mob" ‎ (R3: Recently-created, implausible redirect)

I have no idea what I did wrong. I used the help topics and went to page after page looking for an explanation and couldn't find one. I attempted to contact Kicking222. I found his page but couldn't figure out how to post or send my question.

I'm trying to find out if the problem can be fixed - maybe it just needs a new name or something simple - or if this is a dead issue and I need to start from scratch.

I am user Dennis N. Griffin. My email address was included in my profile and has been verified.

Thanks.

Wikipedia:Deletion_review . I googled "contesting deletion wikipedia", clicked first link, clicked "after deletion", and link to deletion review. I am a google ninja.
You should be able to leave him a message, click the tab Discussion, then Edit this page.
Maybe he felt your contribution was better suited for History_of_Las_Vegas#1947-1963:_Postwar_boom_.26_organized_crime. It is generally hard to make a new article on Wikipedia since most everything already has an appropriate article, they want to keep things organized. Here is the information of what warrents its own article: Wikipedia:Notability - Habanero-tan (talk) 03:51, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Denny, Did you see the message from User:Kicking222 on your user talk page? Apparently your article was titled Las vegas and the mob, and it was about Anthony Spilotro. There is already an article about Spilotro; so your article was redundant. You can edit the existing article if you like.
Kicking222 mentions a book you have written; I can’t tell what if any connection it has to your article. It is frowned on for you to use Wikipedia for publicity, and any article that looks like publicity will be deleted. All articles on Wikipedia must be written from a neutral point of view. For you to write neutrally about your book would be difficult because you have a conflict of interest. If you still want to write about the book, you should read Wikipedia:Your first article—particularly the parts about notability and reliable sources. —teb728 t c 03:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if you want a copy of what you wrote, you can make a request to one of the admins in Category:Wikipedia_administrators_who_will_provide_copies_of_deleted_articles. Sophus Bie (talk) 09:50, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tikka Hun. I use Firefox 3 at times, but without major problems. Could you define what you mean by bizarre please? We'd need to know what the problem is exactly in order to suggest any possible fixes. Scrollbars won't work when clicking on empty space above or below the page size indicator (have that problem myself)? Page is formatted incorrectly? How do I make a complaint against a user for harassment on Wikipedia. James Tucton (talk) 16:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Seek administrator intervention at this page. Presumably they're harrassing a different account of yours, and not the one you've used to post this question (which only has three edits, including this post)? pushthebutton | go on... | push it! 16:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We've selected a name for our entry but unfortunately before the name it says 'User:' - is there any way we can delete this? Or do we need to delete the entire page and start again?

Once your account is autoconfirmed (i.e. four days old and you've made ten edits) then you can move the page to a new title, but I would suggest that you read up on the notability requirements and the policy on conflicts of interest (ie. writing about things you are involved in) before you do so. pushthebutton | go on... | push it! 17:01, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New Article[edit]

Dear Sirs,

I created a new article about my mother, Barbara Everard, and saved it. How long will it be before it appears in Wikipedia? And how do I up load .jpg pictures? I have photographs of her and some of her paintings and book covers to illustrate the article.

Regards

Everardmr01 (talk) 17:28, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article is currently in your user space at User:Everardmr01. To appear in the mainspace, it will have to be moved there. Before we do that however, you need some reliable sources to support her notability, otherwise it will probably be deleted. To upload images, see WP:Upload (your account must be autoconfirmed before you can upload files and move pages). Also because of your relationship with the subject of the article, you have a significant conflict of interest and the article will be heavily scrutinised for neutrality. – ukexpat (talk) 17:33, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers! cf38talk 18:47, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know the translation, however, many Wikipedias will send a welcome email if you visit from another project. Maybe you stopped by a foreign project? TNXMan 18:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
According to this language identifier, it's Bulgarian. If you have a unified login, you'll sometimes get welcome messages from wikipedias you've never visited before. — jwillbur 19:24, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually (and I should have thought of this before), it's Macedonian. Compare the links listed in the email (which start with mk) and the List of Wikipedias. TNXMan 19:26, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah-ha! Thanks to Algebraist for the {{hidden}} template. I knew there was something I was missing. TNXMan 20:41, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Law of unintended consequences has kicked in with the unified login option, which has now undermined the previously valid assumption that when someone creates an account on a particular Wikipedia, they probably read the language of that Wikipedia, and therefore they should be able to read a welcome e-mail message. Now we can automatically create accounts on Wikipedias in any language without intending to or even realizing that we did. This has created several instances of this question on this Help desk, and will probably create more. Ideally the unified login feature would include a language preference feature, such that when we blunder into a foreign-language Wikipedia, any system communication we get would account for our language preference. However, it will probably be a long time before the Wikipedia community figures out how to solve the language problem. Check out Commons which tries to accommodate all languages in one site. --Teratornis (talk) 20:50, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr images upload for a User[edit]

How can I tell what Flickr images (ONLY) I have uploaded and how many Flickr images I have uploaded?--Doug Coldwell talk 22:14, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can find all your images here. You can look at the sources to determine which are from Flickr. —teb728 t c 22:36, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, however I am looking for a method where the database list ONLY my Flickr uploaded images. I have hundreds of images uploaded, however I want to see ONLY a list of Flickr images that I have uploaded, not all my images. In other words a filter that shows ONLY the Flickr images from the hundreds of other images. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell talk 23:00, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So how would the database know which are Flickr images? My guess is that what you are asking is not possible. —teb728 t c 23:09, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • You can ask someone (probably a developer) to run an SQL query on the database. I got a list of all articles with a certain URL that way. Your request should be no different you can search for flickr related licensing tags in your contributions. - Mgm|(talk) 23:35, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A picture i took of a copyrighted work[edit]

I was talking to an admin and he doesn't know the answer to this. So, here is my question: Is this picture I took with my cell phone camera of my copy of Denis Leary's book Why We Suck OK to use on Wikipedia? I think I added the appropriate tag. The filename of the image I uploaded is File:Whywesuckcover.jpg (new user and can't figure out how to link to the image) Thanks for the help! Amicianthony (talk) 23:32, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • In the relevant article it's okay to use, but it would still be fair use since you're reproducing a copyrighted work. Rule of thumb: If the thing you photograph is copyrighted (book or image), the resulting image is still copyrighted. You can't transfer ownership or copyright by reproducing the work. - Mgm|(talk) 23:37, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)A better place to ask this question is WP:MCQ. That said: in general, book covers in articles about the book fall squarely within the non-free content criteria. You might want to use the template {{Book cover fur}} to generate the fair-use rationale. The only problem I can see with the image is that, being taken by a mobile phone, it isn't a very high-quality image. If you have access to a scanner, a scan of the book cover would be much better. You can link to images like this. Algebraist 23:40, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your help! I will try to scan it soon, i just wans't sure, as the copyright notice mentioned something about it being "low-resolution", and I wasn't sure what it meant. Amicianthony (talk) 23:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You can always lower the resolution of your scanned image. It'll still look better than a dodgy photo. Algebraist 23:56, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Check the page now, I uploaded a scanned copy. On the image's page, I tried to put in WP:MCQ, but it is very confusing and I don't understand the formatting. Amicianthony (talk) 00:17, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
