Reliable Source[edit]

The source in question is a voice actor's self-run website, as far as I can tell, in which he claims to be doing the voice of a character in an upcoming video game. No other source thus far has reported him as the voice, however, and given the appearance of the site I'm dubious to its relability. This is the site - http://www.dynamicduovo.com/home.html, and here's the article that is sourcing the voice actor as the voice of a character - http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dissidia:_Final_Fantasy&oldid=290602876. Can it be used as a source? The Clawed One (talk) 00:21, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How Do I Make My Biographical Article in My User Page Go Live?[edit]

How Do I Make My Biographical Article in My User Page Go Live?JedIpsen (talk) 00:22, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First you should probably make sure that your article isn't sent for deletion as soon as it 'goes live'. You will need to cite sources for the content of the article, and provide sources that prove your subject is notable. Unomi (talk) 00:32, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How to link to the same article in another language?[edit]

I need to link an article from the english wikipedia to the thai wikipedia by using the 'languages' box on the left side of the screen. Tomnoree (talk) 01:24, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If the image is actually on Wikimedia Commons which is indicated on its description page if that's the case, you can use it directly. If the image is in the public domain or under a "free" licence such as the GFDL or Creative Commons licences, the best thing to do would be to upload it to Wikimedia Commons, and use that. If the image is under copyright and fair use is invoked, you will have to upload it to the Thai Wikipedia. Equendil Talk 01:36, 18 May 2009 (UTC) whoops, time for some sleep, thought the question was about images. Equendil Talk 01:52, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you are asking how to add a interwiki link, you just need to enclose in double brackets, the two letter language code, a colon and then the name of the article on the other language Wikipedia. For example, [[fr:Liste des cépages du monde]] Rmhermen (talk) 01:45, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Space Shuttle says:
Six air-worthy shuttles have been built; the first orbiter, Enterprise, was not built for space flight, and was used only for testing purposes. Five space-worthy orbiters were built: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour. Challenger disintegrated 73 seconds after launch in 1986, and Endeavour was built as a replacement. Columbia broke apart during re-entry in 2003.

Ruth Padel image problem[edit]

In the article about Ruth Padel, her image has a copyright dispute related statement beneath it. I am not sure if that's the general process of dealing with such images. The fact that the image is probably not free has already been stated on the image page itself. Shall the statement be removed? --Leif edling (talk) 05:41, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's general practice for templates and images to have a note attached when they are up for deletion. The note will disappear if the image is kept, no action needed.  Skomorokh  06:12, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Misbehaving TOC[edit]

Why is the table of contents appearing in the todo list at Talk:Absinthe?  Skomorokh  06:10, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is because the TOC regularly appears just above the first section header. In this article the first section header is "Absinthe page" in the todo template. Probably the todo template should be moved into the "To-do" section of the talk page. —teb728 t c 06:36, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How to add an article in Wikipedia?[edit]

Please advice how to add an article which is currently not present in the Wikipedia? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sreejith kb (talkcontribs) 07:45, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Your first article.

  1. Ensure that you have an account and you are logged in. If you don't have an account, create one
  2. Make sure the subject is notable enough to have their own article
  3. Find references
  4. Make sure no article on the subject exists under a different title by typing the subject into the search box to the left (←) and clicking 'Search'
  5. Type the page name in the search box to the left (←) and click 'Go'
  6. Click 'Create this page'
  7. Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout guidelines
  8. Be aware that Wikipedia deletes thousands of new articles for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are at extra risk of deletion, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones. -Optigan13 (talk) 07:50, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Par WP:ELNO and WP:SPAM inserting external links for the sole purpose of advertising is strictly forbidden. If an individual or group is found advertisinging spam links his or her account / ip will likely be blocked from editing wikipedia, as well as having their domain blacklisted.
It is however, allowed to link the main website of a company or product if that company or product is the subject on a wikipedia article. The company has to meet Notability and verifiability guidelines, along with being written in a neutral point of view. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 12:49, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see the article I wrote, how do I see it using the search.[edit]

I have tried everything, when I search (in using all cases) I can't see the ariticle I wrote. However, it is on the edit page, what do I do? —Preceding unsigned comment added by BBT2009 (talkcontribs) 14:07, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's because the article you wrote was on your userpage, not in the main article space. To get it to the main area, you would need to move the page. However, I want to strongly encourage you to read our info on advertising and why it is not allowed. Looking at the article you wrote, it would almost certainly be deleted as spam. TNXMan 14:13, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It shouldn't be on your user page, our guidelines say user pages should not contain "Advertising or promotion of a business or organization unrelated to Wikipedia (such as purely commercial sites or referral links"). I have searched and the business does notseem to meet our criteria at WP:COMPANY so I agree, such an article would be speedily deleted as spam. Dougweller (talk) 14:50, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 2.8 million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the online free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the left hand side of your screen. If that is not fruitful, we have a reference desk, divided into various subjects areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. TNXMan 15:01, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

one last check please[edit]

Alright I have edited this article so many times that I don't think I am really achieving anything anymore. As I have stated earlier on the help desk I do have a conflict of interest with the article that I am working on, I have had a few other editors help with it though and I think that it is almost ready to be published. I would love for someone to take one last crack at it and let me know if you think that it is ready to be posted. Just got to my user page and click on the link. Thanks Clinehan (talk) 16:48, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

After reviewing the article (I assume its this one i would say it still need quite some work. It borders being an advertisement, and it is one of the articles i would likely tag for a deletion discussion.
The huge issue with this one is that it seems to be a brochure or a sale catalogue, which does not adhere to Npov. For example this line: Skyhawks Sports opened its door to the franchising world in 2007. With nearly 70 corporate-owned locations across the United States, Skyhawks now offers the opportunity for local franchisees to own and operate one of the most respected and well-known sports camps in the country.. Those bolded parts are purely promotional and therefore they have no place in an encyclopedia. Or take this line: This program is founded upon a coaching philosophy and methodology that have evolved and been fine-tuned for over 30 years. This, like the previous line, and like virtually the entire article, is simply marketing talk.
If you want to add the article you should fully rewrite the article as if you are just plain describing the camp. Do NOT include any lines which goal is to tell people how great the camp is - for an encyclopedia nothing is great. Just the pure, nonbiased facts matter. Fedora mediawiki installation problem[edit]

After substantial google searches over the last month I have failed to determine how to make the appearance of my wiki look normal. It seems to lack all the "nice" appearance that my other Debian mediawiki has. It is all text and flat and colorless (except for link colors).

Are there special tricks to configuring mediawiki on Fedora? Is there some special link to be made to the skin directories? When I change from monobook to other styles, the organization of the pages changes but the appearance continues to be flat and colorless. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.60.117.38 (talk) 17:26, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New article not showing up when searched[edit]

I added a new piece on George Rose (an American Photographer). The article title is "George Rose, Photographer". It does not come up when you search "George Rose" or "George Rose Photographer" without the comma.

How can I get the search to return two possibilities for "George Rose" now that there are two articles about two separate men named George Rose?

75.48.73.192 (talk) 17:38, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For me both search terms come back with the photographer version of George Rose. It seems he has also been added at George Rose (disambiguation) already so the article should be perfectly findable. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 17:48, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Extensions[edit]

Is there a place on WP where one can make requests for WP applications or programs? For example: I'm a member of WikiProject for the National Register of Historic Places, and one of the members used the NRHP database to write a PHP infobox generator here.

I've got the technical know-how to help out with stuff like this, and I was just wondering if there was a central place where I could find these kinds of ideas and maybe help create them. Thanks! Tom(2¢) 17:50, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know specifically, but the page Wikipedia:Requests lists a fait amount of pages where users can make requests. For starters there is the bot request where people request a bot that can do tedious work, mostly removing or adding categories. Second there is the requested templates page. True external plugins have no specific page. Last there is the Toolserver, but unfortunatally i cannot tell you the workings of that section. Can't find instructions or tutorial on how to interact or talk with users[edit]

I found a question and partial answer to an exact problem I'm having (delete key invokes control_alt_del command in Remote Desktop Connection mode) but I can't figure out how to ask an additional question of the people in the thread. The discussion is archived from April 16-23, 2009. Is there a way to "jump in" so to speak in the thread? I researched the FAQ but couldn't find an answer. Ldoze (talk) 18:23, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you are trying to find out how to do something, try the Reference desk. Article talk pages are not an appropriate place for such questions (even if sometimes they creep in), they are for discussing the actual article, not the subject of the article. Dougweller (talk) 18:52, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Try the April help desk archives. However, if the discussion is that old, people (even regular help deskers) are unlikely to read your additional question - you might be better off raising a new question on the Computing ref desk like Doug suggested above. Unrequested "new password" emails[edit]

Over the last few months, I have recieved a couple of emails with the title "New temporary password for Wikipedia". According to the mail headers they came from wiki@wikimedia.org and were sent from an IP address registered to the Wikimedia Foundation, so I assume they were "genuine" requests. According to the message text, the request was made by the same IP address - one registered to an ISP in Atlanta, GA. Unfortunately, I have not visited the USA for some years and certainly do not have an account with a US ISP. And I have never had the need to request a new password.

Is this somthing I should be worried about? Is someone trying to hack my Wikipedia account or requesting new passwords in order to hack my mail account? Is this a common occurrence for editors with email enabled? If I remove the email address from my preferences, will my Wikipedia account be more or less secure? Thanks. Astronaut (talk) 18:31, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't speak to your specific problem, but I do know that foreign language Wikipedias will occasionally send emails to users who have a global log-in upon their first visit to the site. Have you been to any foreign language Wikipedias recently? TNXMan 18:37, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I got one of those too from id.wikipedia.org, but I wasn't worried about that. Even though I don't read Indonesian(?), after a bit of detective work it was pretty obvious what was going on there. Astronaut (talk) 18:50, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this may be fairly common - some dodgy individual requests - from the login page - a new password for your account, believing it to be a completely original method of hacking that no one has ever thought of before. Unfortunately (or fortunately - from your/our perspective) the would-be hacker doesn't get the password - it goes to the email address you registered. You can safely ignore it; if you don't use the new password then your old one will keep working. Meanwhile the hacker realises that passwords don't get emailed to anyone but the account holder, hopefully feels a bit stupid, and disappears off into the darkness.
Cheers, This flag once was redpropagandadeeds 18:42, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do the new passwords mentioned in the mails remain active on my account as well, or do they expire after a while? Astronaut (talk) 18:52, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Given your username, it is likely that someone else really does think that they registered with this user name. That other person tried to log in and failed, so they asked for a password to be sent to "their" email addess, which is actually your email address. -Arch dude (talk) 21:47, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't thought of that scenario. Astronaut (talk) 13:40, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All you need to do is go to my userpage and click on the link to Skyhawks Sports Academy. Clinehan (talk) 19:10, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IMHO, Skyhawks Sports Academy is not too bad at all and I didn't detect too much of an advertising tone to it. You could add a few more links to explain some terms to non-US readers (eg. what is a "501(c)(3) non-profit organization"), you probably don't need to put "LLC" after company names, and the extra references would be better linked to the text than gathered at the end where it is unclear what they specifically verify in the text. A good effort. Astronaut (talk) 19:30, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is indeed much better then the previous version, and i am fairly certain that this version won't be removed if it is transfered to the article space. You might want to make inline references from the ones that arecurrently in a list format, and in case you want to lighten up the article you can add an infobox or image, but that are mainly details. Good work improving it :). Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:38, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tried creating a page for my own biography.

I guess it was created as "User:my account name".

Two questions:

2. Because my name is the same as a famous person, how can I show up on a search list for my name?

Creating sub wikiproject within a project[edit]

Hello,

I want to create a sub project within one i am member to be more spefic to some of the articles it covers and eventally creatre a MOS for them however i am not sure abotu the rpocess of doing it.--Andrewcrawford (talk) 20:18, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The best place to propose a task force (or if you want, a whole subproject) is on the project's talkpage. Whether you propose a task force or subproject depends on the topic you want to cover. Task forces simply focus more on a more specific area of a topic (e.g. the US Military history taskforce is part of WP:MILHIST and focuses just on US military history). Subprojects are fully independent projects that come under the jurisdiction of a larger project (e.g. WP:USRD). Subprojects usually have their own guidelines and such, but task forces do not. If the parent project is active enough, other users will discuss and form a consensus. If there is no discussion, there is probably no need for a task force or subproject. Vandal[edit]

WP:VANDAL says that if a user's contributions are all vandalism, it should be reported immediately. Yet WP:AIV says to issue warnings first. So, what do I do about User:Rustydan? Clarityfiend (talk) 21:49, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Accounts that are "evidently vandalism-only" are exempt from the warnings rule. However, handle with care - one or two vandalism edits obviously doesn't qualify for "vandalism-only", and a warning really should be issued first, as a level 2 warning is usually enough to stop most casual vandals. I found this article Karam Singh (historian) to not be written in a very encyclopaedic manner, (there is a lot of phrases like “by grace of god gave birth to three children”). Doe this needing re-writing, or is it okay? —Preceding unsigned comment added by ScribbleStick (talkcontribs) 22:06, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely, for all sorts of reasons, including the sorts of phrases you mention. Have you read WP:OR for instance? And too much detail about other people, the references would be difficult to verify - see WP:Verify, etc. Looking at the talk page I'd say a lot of it if not all was written by a relative. I've done a bit, a lot more needs to be done. It read more like an obituary than an article in an encyclopedia - still does for that matter. From the talk page, it was written by a descendant. Dougweller (talk) 07:12, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to get article reviewed[edit]

I submitted this on May 7th and thought I had it posted for comment, but so far have heard nothing. Please comment or tell me what I need to do, or where I need to go from here. Thank you.

ROOTS ROCK SOCIETY

Roots Rock Society is a Chicago-based musical emsemble that promotes the music of the African Diaspora, including reggae, calypso, american jazz, rock and latino rhythms. The ensemble is led by Chicago music-veteran Stann Champion. In January, 2009, he won "Best Soul-Calypso Musician," at the 28th Annual Chicago Music Awards. The group is known for creating and performing original music at community-based, rather than commercial entertainment venues. RRS has played to hundreds of thousands at such well-known Chicago public eniues as Navy Pier, US Cellular Field, O'Hare International Airport, Millenium Park, and Midway International Airport. In addition, the group has taken its message of cultural pluralism and the promotion of African diaspora music to a number of schools in the Chicago area. The group's most recent release, "La Familia," is an ode to African, latino and Calypso beats and traditional family values.

The ensemble's bright future began with a life-altering decision in the 1980s when Champion decided to leave a successful advertising career, to work on recording project at Tuff Gong Studio in Jamaica. There, he contributed to contemporary Reggae and other world rhythm giants as Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Mariam Mekeba, and Lucky Dube. Today, Champion and RRS’s music has been heard in 50 American media markets and in nearly 20 countries across the planet, covering all five continents.

In addition, he has received radio airplay on Chicago media outlets: WLS (ABC), WTTW (PBS), WGN (Superstation), (WBBM) CBS and public cable access channels, matched with radio airplay on The Loop, WGCI, WXRT, WBEZ and college stations across the city. More recently, Champion and RRS have ventured into the realm of music as a "healing art," by providing volunteer music therapy to patients a Swedish Covenant. Swedish covenant has, in turn, exposed RRS to a national chain of holistic health hositals known as "The Planetree Program."

The 56-year-old Champion is most proud, however of serving as "Principal for a Day" at The Sir Miles Davis Magnet Academy for Children’s Engineering, the first of its kind in Chicago . With youth performance/workshops in public and private schools and churches, RRS was recognized for their efforts by being bestowed "Award of Honor for the Contribution to World Beat Music" by the 2008 Chicago Music Awards.

Hello Joenathan. I have edited the first paragraph and part of the second at your subpage to remove the promotional tone. It needs that done throughout and might be in danger of speedy deletion as blatant advertizing if this is not done. It is full of peacock language and reads like a press release. The band is certainly notable and in that regard, I have added some information using two cited sources with reference markup. I have also added two maintenance tags regarding sourcing and the tone. Please attempt to rewrite the article from a more neutral point of view and add further sources verifying the content. If you look at how the references that I added appear, and then look at the article in edit mode, you should get an idea how such sourcing is done, but you might find this guide useful. If you have trouble figuring out the sourcing, drop me a message on my talk page and I'll help. When you are done, you can move (do not cut and paste) the article to Roots Rock Society (not ROOTS ROCK SOCIETY). Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:03, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do I create a page in wikipedia?[edit]

I need to know how to create a page in Wikipedia. Can anyone help me?Kclbm4 (talk) 22:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Before creating an article, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines which all articles should comport with. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite to reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.
If you still think an article is appropriate, see Help:Starting a new page. You might also look at Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation. new landscaping has caused water problems[edit]

my neighbors landscaped their yard several inches higher than the adjoining neighbors, and now several yards in town are constantly flooded since last year, and the city of Macomb,IL. has done nothing about it. I've contacted them and been told the city attorney has it covered up on their desk. What can be done? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bbowen53 (talkcontribs) 23:11, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not help solve personal problems. Baileyf07 (talk) 23:45, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move Final Article from User Subpage to Wikipedia[edit]

Hello - I am new to Wikipedia. How do I move a user subpage that I am editing now into Wikipedia? When will I know if my final page has been accepted? Thank you. 23:51, 18 May 2009 (UTC)23:51, 18 May 2009 (UTC)23:51, 18 May 2009 (UTC)Edward E. Longley (talk)

According to the records, you haven't created any subpages; and what's supposed to be your userpage is currently a long panegyric for yourself, written in third person and full of unacceptable advertising language. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:57, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
