What would it take for Wikipedia to remove permanently and entirely a page? We've already deleted that page from Wikipedia. However, another website has chosen to copy it and keep it up. Since Wikipedia content is free to reuse, this is an acceptable thing to do. What is happening when I add {{category:airports}} to a page?[edit]

I just edited Saint Yan Airport and added {{category:airports}} to the bottom. I expected that when I saved the page, I would see at the bottom "categories:airports". Instead, it says:

The main article for this category is Airport.

I'm very impressed, and pleased, that all this stuff happened. I'm just curious WHY it happened. Where does the code reside that dictates all the things that are supposed to happen when {{category:airports}} gets added to a page???

The code {{category:airports}} transcludes the source code of the page category:airports but categories should not be transcluded in articles. They should be added to the article with brackets like Goodvac showed. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:34, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Ship called "The Increase"[edit]

In 1628: A ship supposedly arrived from England in Boston called "The Increae". Some of my distant relatives were on that ship. Can someone tell me how to get information about that ship and possibly its passengers?

Boston wasn't settled until 1630 (as Shawmut). There was sporadic settlement in the area, but the Massachusetts Bay Colony itself was not organized until 1629. If it was 1628, they probably arrived in Plymouth Colony rather than Boston, as until the 1630's, Plymouth was the primary settlement and colony in the area. A good place to start your reasearch would be the Plymouth Colony Archive which has a wealth of information on Plymouth. In the future, the better place to ask these sorts of questions would be the Wikipedia:Reference desk, as this page is intended for help in using Wikipedia, while the Reference desk is for general knowledge questions. --Jayron32 06:08, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bad faith edit[edit]

I fouund an message telling me that my edit of a particular article had been rejected by the bot system and sayig if I continued the antisocial behaviour I would be baNNED. I did not make the particualr edit or any other. Those messages that you read are from over 3 years ago. They were sent to the IP address you are currently using. You can safely disregard those messages. As your IP changes you might get more messages that do not belong to you. The best way to keep from getting irrelevant messages is to create an account. See also the box at the bottom of User talk:89.139.182.211. The warning to the user of 89.139.182.211 at the time was given for this edit in 2007. It's possible your IP address had already changed between seeing a warning and posting here. In that case it wouldn't have been User talk:89.139.182.211 you saw. Using an image used in French wikipedia[edit]

I created Fédération Syndicale Unitaire using material from the French wikipedia. They include the union's logo: Logo fsu.PNG. It doesn't work in English wikipedia, I think because it hasn't been uploaded to Commons. How can I do that? I don't have a French wikipedia account. You would need to download a local copy to your machine and then upload the image here. Images have never been my strong point, but I think Commons would not accept a fair-use image such as a logo. However, you can upload it here for use in the article. TN X Man 14:10, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tnxman307 is quite correct in that Commons could not accept the image (unless the FSU have a notice saying that they are releasing the image under a compatible license, which is extremely unlikely). Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles[edit]

There seem to be a range of templates to help with the citation of specific sources, such as {{OED}}. Some of these are listed at Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles but not all (for example, the OED one is not there).

Is there any way to find all the available citation templates like this?

Also, could I add more such templates? For example, it would be useful to have ones for citing entries in the standard Latin and classical Greek lexicons.

The ones which have been categorised properly may be found at Category:Specific-source_templates - but not all of them are there either! Logo[edit]

Hi, I have noticed that the wikipedia globe logo hides part of the text message on the upper left hand corner of the webpage. Is this intentional? If yes what purpose does it serve?

I feel that ANI is a second-to-last resort (the last being arbitration) that should be used after all other steps have been exhausted. ANI is really only for urgent matters that have not/cannot be handled elsewhere. The case mentioned above sounds like it could be discussed at several other venues first. automatic keep or delete?[edit]

I don't know if there really is a policy one way or the other. It's more of an interpretation. My take is that we should not have an article on a subject at all unless the article cites from its inception reliable sources that demonstrate significant coverage. Some people think it's OK to add unsourced stubs with the idea that other people will come along and expand them. There are probably several different views that could be argued. See also Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, WP:NOTABLE, WP:V, and WP:RS. There is no simple formula to determine what survives on Wikipedia. Most deletions are decided by comparatively small numbers of Wikipedians, which suggests that the articles that get deleted have few users interested in fighting to keep them. You don't see too many discussions at WP:AFD where articles get deleted after, say, 500 users vote to keep them. Content removal issues[edit]

Given that I am a Rollbacker, I seldom use the popup revert option, however, they significantly speed my vandalism reversion, as rather than having to go to the diff page itself, I can mouse over the diff link and get the diff in a small window. Immunize (talk) 16:22, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Louis XIV article vandalism[edit]

In the section http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XIV_of_France#Personal_reign_and_reforms

there is a paragraph about Louis XIV's reform of the military, in which it is flatly declared (off topic and without citations): He was a racist.

Naperville, IL[edit]

I have attempted to add the title of a book, including the ISBN number, a number of times under the "further reading" section of the Naperville IL page. The book is Gloamin' Bridge (A Civil War Remembrance). It is historical fiction concerning Naperville during the Civil War. It goes in okay, but when checking later it has been deleted. The first time you added the book to the 'Further reading' section of the article, it was removed with the comment Fictional; stories aren't appropriate for the "Further reading" section. If the book had been a factual book, it would probably have been kept, but although it may have been researched before writing, a fiction book cannot be guaranteed to be 100% accurate (sometimes, accuracy gets in the way of the story's needs, and is changed!). -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 19:15, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It appears to be a Print on Demand title (going by the only reference at Google, at Google Books). I couldn't find any libraries which held it (looking at WorldCat) or any bookshops which have it on their catalogs (except Amazon) - and I can't find any reviews for it which show that it is accurately depicting the Naperville area (make that "I can't find any reviews for it"). (edit conflict)I'm not sure that it would count as "popular culture" - Amazon appears to be one of only 3 places you can get it (the other two are pickabook · com and thebookshoponline · com, but I can't find a publication date (or publisher), it's the only book by the author which Amazon (or the other two) have. Even using the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13, the only references I can find are the Google Books result and the 3 bookseller results. flag salute[edit]

If you are having a conference or multi day meeting, do you salute the flag only at the opening of the first meeting, such as a breakfast meeting, (if that is the first meetiing of the day), or must you do it at the start of each segment, such as a breakfast meeting, lunch meeting, dinner meeting?

List of articles in category needing pictures[edit]

Hiya... did some digging through the Help desk archives and I didn't see anything that worked, so here's a fresh request. How do I get a list of all the articles in a category that need pictures? What I'm trying to do is to figure out what entries in Category:Female pornographic film actors need pics, without having to click on each individual pictures. I've gone through the cat and tagged the talk page for all the articles that were missing pictures with the appropriate "needs-photo=yes", so there are entries present in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of people and their subcats for all the articles. MIME type image upload[edit]

Hi, I have an image from a digital camera I'd like to upload. For privacy reasons I've stripped the exif data. However, when I attempt to upload the Image (a jpg), wikipedia keeps saying: "File extension does not match MIME type." and appears to be refusing to accept it. I've ticked the "ignore warning" box but it's still not working. Once the exif data was stripped, I re-saved it as a new jpg file using irfanview, but it is still giving me that error and not working. Any suggestions?
