Pictures of tanks[edit]

Before I sign off, I'd like to ask someone here where I could ask for some (20-30) photos of tanks and self propelled artillery platforms to be identified. Some of these are the only ones in the world, so II thought they would look good in an article. I will upload the photos once the question is answered (they are all from the Kubinko Tank Museum in Kubinko, Russia). Buggie111 (talk) 03:19, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can try the users over at the miscellaneous section of the reference desk, but you might also try tapping the specialists over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:37, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You might also want to try making a request at the commons. Kayau Voting IS evil 05:06, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's Kubinka Tank Museum. Maybe you can identify some of them with help from http://www.tankmuseum.ru/index_e.html, commons:Tank Museum, Kubinka, commons:Category:Tanks. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:57, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I found that (meaning Kubinka) when looking at the Maus. I'll try to do so, but it doesn't really seem like as if there is a need. Buggie111 (talk) 14:42, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit ok?[edit]

Was i ok to put a speedy deletion template back onto a page after a ip address removed it.It was on the page Timo Schunemman.Gobbleswoggler (talk) 09:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been deleted. ~~ GB fan ~~ talk 11:25, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome[edit]

Am i allowed to add the welcome template to anyones page after they have made an edit?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 11:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It depends. If they have made just one edit or two, then do welcome; if they have edited a lot, and has been here for a few weeks, then don't, as he may take offence. Kayau Voting IS evil 11:26, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page Deletion[edit]

Cab someone delete the page Hixapanichalighonamaxipainophobia.Gobbleswoggler (talk) 11:34, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You had already tagged Hixapanichalighonamaxipainophobia for speedy deletion with {{db-test}} ({{db-hoax}} might have been more accurate). There is no need to also post here. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:44, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

can you please let me know if the illustrations for some of the Bottanicals that you have on your website can be purchased.

Best regards Carmen <blanked>--62.133.17.110 (talk) 11:51, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The images cannot really be purchased, but they may be available for re-use. See this page for specifics on how it can be done. TNXMan 11:57, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

JULY 29, 2010 NOTE: To Whom It May Concern,

I am working on JoAnne's page ( joannelorenzana.com ) as I'm a friend but very new to Wikipedia and I have been allowed to work on it. In hind sight, I should have studied the steps in proceeding first (which is what I'm doing now) and should have began with the sandbox and created sippets from there. I also apply changes on her existing website, with permission. I will revise said article as soon as possible but desperate for help creating redirects to pages of reference, I will also note the web designer who created her main page for additional resource.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely, Eric —Preceding unsigned comment added by Koolfish (talkcontribs) 16:35, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why has Trevor Blumas been deleted

Is my edit on the page: List of My Family episodes ok?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 15:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gobbleswoggler, if you must keep asking help desk to review your edits, please help people to help you. You have been asked several times now to provide diffs when referring to specific edits, for example: Diff. In this case your edit looks fine. AJCham 15:45, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Or don't worry about your edits so much that you have to keep asking. If you are wrong, someone will let you know on your talk page. We have all made mistakes and we learn from them. – ukexpat (talk) 18:19, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On bill williams' page it says he was born on may 15 but on imdb it says he was born on may 21.Should i go with imdb?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 16:15, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would go with May 21 because NNDB and IMDB are more reliable. I find no sources that say May 15. Goodvac (talk) 16:35, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did I do this right?[edit]

I created an article about Phạm Nguyễn Lan Phiên, which was nominated for speedy deletion. I think he might be notable and want a normal deletion discussion please. I tried to object, but was not sure how to do this. English is not my native language, that was complicated to understand for me. Did I do it right?-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 17:17, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you did, but to be honest I think it will be deleted. Please read our notability guidelines for articles about people. – ukexpat (talk) 17:32, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks anyway. I still think he might be notable, since he won two pretigous awards and was the youngest student ever to be accepted at a very prestiguos college, but let's see what people say in the discussion.-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 17:36, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There won't be a discussion. It is tagged for speedy deletion, and can be deleted by an admin without discussion. If it survives review by an admin, it may be still referred to a deletion discussion at WP:AFD. See WP:DELETION for more info. – ukexpat (talk) 18:16, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

VCH - Nat. Soc. Inquiry, 1846-7 and other nonsense[edit]

Resolved
 –  – ukexpat (talk) 18:21, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am researching Stretham education starting with Pugh (ed.) (1953) Victoria County History: Cambridgeshire Vol. IV p. 158 (via British History Online). His information is tantalising but seems incomplete so I am looking for his original sources. For example, all on page 158 ...

  • Note 25 he says "Bp.'s Mun., Ely, G 2." which according to here means The muniments of ... the Bishop as 'Bp.'s Mun.' The arrangement of the Episcopal manuscripts is described in A. Gibbons, Ely Episcopal Records. The capitular manuscripts are housed in one room but are not permanently arranged in shelves or cupboards: the numbering used here is that found on the documents when they were examined in 1949-50., so I guess I cannot access these
  • Note 26 he says "Bp.'s Mun., Ely, B 6." ibid.
  • Note 28 he says "Rep. of Nat. Soc. 1846–7 (priv. printed)". I believe from here this translates to "Result of the Returns to the General Inquiry made by the National Society, 1846-7 (1849)". When I google book search that term I get modern works such as The Census and social structure:....
  • Note 32 he says "Archives of Nat. Soc." which means what? The National Society for promoting religious education? If so, they are not digitised

I will give you my google when you take it from my cold, dead hands. In the meantime, someone more familiar with this stuff please provide some guidance (other than get another hobby!) --Senra (talk) 17:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you please clarify your question? It is not immediately clear to me what you are asking. Thanks. – ukexpat (talk) 17:34, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am trying to find out more about the education (from as early as possible) in Stretham, Cambridgeshire. VCH is a good starting point, but does not give enough information. VCH references are obscure (to me anyway). Help me find information on education in Stretham --Senra (talk) 17:53, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In that case you need the Reference Desk. Standard message follows:
Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. I hope this helps. – ukexpat (talk) 18:13, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
will do. So sorry to bother you guys. Each day, in every way, I am getting better and better (but slowly - he he) --Senra (talk) 18:18, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, marking as resolved. – ukexpat (talk) 18:21, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of page[edit]

Did I do the right thing to propose deletion of the page Marco Carcangiu?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 18:21, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think so. Mr. R00t Talk 18:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not so sure. Per WP:ATHLETE: Players who have appeared, and managers who have managed, in a fully-professional league (as detailed here), will generally be regarded as notable.. The question then is whether Carcangiu's club, FC Etar Veliko Tarnovo, is in a full professional league. As I don't know the answer to that, I have removed the PROD as this should be discussed at WP:AFD. – ukexpat (talk) 19:22, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of page[edit]

Can someone delete the page Bhadeshwar?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 18:28, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also is there a page where you can report pages to be deleted more quickly?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 18:29, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think G3 applies better. It's listed at the admin dashboard. There's a backlog of 133 pages that need to be CSD'd right now so just be patient. Mr. R00t Talk 18:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In response to your second question. Anything that an admin needs to do gets listed here. Mr. R00t Talk 18:32, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a badly-written two line stub, but it's about a real place (try Google) and can't be dismissed as "pure vandalism". -- John of Reading (talk) 18:49, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It was tagged for speedy deletion [1] when you posted. Tagging places it in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion or another category for deletion. Admins monitor these categories so there is no reason to post here. It's a hidden category. I recommend you set your preferences to show hidden categories if you haven't already. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:43, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit count[edit]

I have 323 non-deleted edits (326 including deleted), but Wikipedia says I only have 306. What is the problem?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Us441 (talkcontribs) 18:40, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are different edit counters using different rules (for example, a move may count as one or two edits) and updating at different times. I wouldn't worry about it when the difference is small. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a discussion after closure[edit]

Hello - I would like to get some views on this. Obviously contributing to a discussion (for example, an AfD discussion) after it has been closed isn't allowed (nor does it make sense), but would it be appropriate to edit a discussion after it has been closed to perform "janitorial" work, more specifically signing an unsigned comment, which in this case is of the user who closed the discussion? IMO, it's all right, but I want to see what others think. Perhaps it is better to add a note regarding it around the actual discussion, or on the talk page (though at that point, if someone really wanted to see who closed the discussion, they would look at the history, not the talk page). Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:17, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The closure needs to be signed - so yeah, signing the closure with the unsigned template (or asking the closing admin to do so) isn't a problem. I can't think of a reason why any comments would need to be changed after the closure, though. If there is something hinky - the nominator of an AFD is a sock of the article's author trolling, for example - add a note at the bottom of the page. Is there a specific page that requires attention? UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 19:25, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This particular MfD wasn't signed by the closing user, so I'll take care of that in a second. Nothing about odd comments or conflicts or anything like that. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:39, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

transferring edit credit[edit]

Can I request that an edit made under my username be transferred to my IP address only and no longer linked with my username account? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.50.152.36 (talk) 20:04, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry. – ukexpat (talk) 20:08, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have never seen such a request but there are lots of requests for the opposite: Transferring from IP address to user name (which we don't do either). In certain cases an edit or it's editor can be oversighted (made invisible) but I don't know whether this is relevant for you. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Company's Marketing Manager Making updates to Page[edit]

I recently found very obvious evidence that a company's Senior Marketing Communications Manager was making updates to the company's wikipedia page. Being a naive wikipedia contributer my question is this: 1) Is it not against wikipedia terms of service to do this, in fact isn't this a very grievous break of the terms? 2) If 1 is true then, what can be done to bring attention to / revert all changes done by this person? Perhaps block editing from this company's IP address etc? Thanks, - naive user —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.88.170.40 (talk) 20:06, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's not prohibited per se, but it is strongly discouraged by WP:COI. – ukexpat (talk) 20:08, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The concern here should be the nature of the edits more than the status of the editor – are they clearly bad faith or promotional, for instance? If the user is making uncontroversial corrections, or perhaps removing unsourced contentious material then there is no problem, and in fact such edits should be welcomed, COI or otherwise. AJCham 20:15, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See also Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations. If we looked into the case then maybe we would just inform the user of our policies. Or maybe we would do nothing if the edits are uncontroversial. It's unlikely we would jump to a block without warning first. See WP:OUTING if you consider taking this further. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:19, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
