!Voting[edit]

What does it mean to !vote? -- YPNYPN 04:06, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's one of our little nerdisms here. The ! is mathematical shorthand for "not": in other words, while you are contributing to a discussion, possibly even taking a position such as "Keep" or "Delete", "support" or "oppose", you are not actually voting on the matter, but rather participating in a discussion striving towards a consensus of the body by use of policy-based arguments, rather than a raw vote count as if you were electing a county clerk by democratic means. --Orange Mike | Talk 04:14, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't call it a 'mathematical' shorthand: the use of a prefixed exclamation mark to indicate negation comes from programming languages such as C. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 09:32, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) See WP:Vote. "It serves as a cute little reminder that it is "not the vote" that matters, but the reasoning behind the !vote that is important." RudolfRed (talk) 04:16, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! -- YPNYPN 14:49, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indenting[edit]

In List of songwriter collaborations, I'd like to be able to format as follows in the first table column:

Rodgers and Hammerstein:

Richards Rodgers (music)
Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics)

but putting a colon after the <br> doesn't do it. Suggestions? Clarityfiend (talk) 05:19, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Then do as you did above: remove HTML breaks and use wiki formatting instead, something like in this diff ... -CiaPan (talk) 06:04, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
D'oh! Thanks. Clarityfiend (talk) 08:28, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing edits from article revision history[edit]

Is there a way to remove an edit from article revision history? I reverted an edit by an IP user adding external link to a leaked song, as I believe it violates Wikipedia copyright policy. I don't think it's appropriate to keep the link visible there, for anyone to browse. Didn't occur to me when I did the revert, so my question may be a little late. --Sk4170 (talk) 08:17, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can request revision deletion. Roger (talk) 08:40, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! --Sk4170 (talk) 09:37, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I revdel'd the edit.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:19, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thanks. --Sk4170 (talk) 16:01, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why did Wikipedia refused our Article?[edit]

Dear Madam/Sir

Good day,

My name is Khalida ,and I am representing the famous Chef Osama El Sayed, I think that my request is clear from the subject title , but i just want to add , that a profile under name of Chef Osama El Sayed was added to Wikipedia, before about two years, it was working for only one week after that , it disapeared from the web, would you please tell us what do you want from us to activate that profile.

Here is our web site www.chefosama.com

Your Prompt answer will be highly appreciated — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.200.85.229 (talk) 09:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The previous article was deleted because it was a direct copy of www.chefosama.com/chef_biography.php, which is not released under a free licence. If you wish to use this text on Wikipedia, you will need to arrange for the website to show a disclaimer on the page which releases the text under a CC-BY-SA or similar licence, meaning that anyone, anywhere, can reuse, alter or sell the text, in perpetuity. However, since the deleted text was fairly promotional in the way it was worded, it would probably not be suitable for Wikipedia anyway. If you want to create a new article on Osama El Sayed you may do so, however you will need to provide at least two sources which are unrelated to El Sayed and his business and cover him in detail, in order to meet the basic inclusion requirements. You will also need to read our conflict of interest guidelines, and abide very carefully by Wikipedia's neutrality policy. Yunshui  10:41, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Wiki projects[edit]

I think a wiki project (Wikipedia:WikiProject Kingdom of Hungary) is unnecesary. We already have a wiki project named Wikipedia:WikiProject Hungary and I don't see why we would create a wiki project for each form of government of a country. Can it be nominated for deletion?

I am also interested if Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries is correctly applied here Talk:Kingdom of Romania. We talk about an existing country, only the form of government has changed TransylvaniaRomania (talk) 10:00, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You could also consider merging the "Kingdom of" WikiProjects into the "main" country projects as Task Forces. That way the work done by the projects won't simply be thrown out but could continue under the "main" project. Roger (talk) 11:35, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is no work done by Wikipedia:WikiProject Kingdom of Hungary. It was created yesterday [1] TransylvaniaRomania (talk) 12:48, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. That was also that person's first edit to Wikipedia, and they did not make a proposal to create it. - Purplewowies (talk) 17:18, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Logo Change[edit]

Good morning.

My company, Select Medical Corporation, underwent a logo change last year and is now known simply as Select Medical (dropping the Corporation). It has been several years since I went through the process of updating a logo (for a different employer...I am new to this company); what is the process for updating the official logo on our wikipedia page which is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Select_Medical_Corporation?

Thank you for your help.

Greg Swartzlander Corporate Online Communications Manager — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gps220 (talkcontribs) 13:49, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I replaced it with a screenshot from your company website. For future reference: Click on the logo to go to that image file page and then select 'upload new version of this file' The extension needs to be the same, .png in this case. Rule of thumb is 300-500px wide for fair use images. We may be able to upload a higher resolution image if your legal department agrees that it doesn't meet Threshold of originality in the source country being USA I assume. The original artist/copyright holder can also release it under a 'free licence'. This only effects the copyright of the image and not the trademark status, meaning other companies can't use it to sell similar products/services. Your legal deptartment should be able to explain it better than I.--Canoe1967 (talk) 14:18, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I managed to download the logo from the website and have uploaded in place of the screenshot.--ukexpat (talk) 14:40, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My articles is locked and its says on process.[edit]

Hi there, I am having a problem with my article, at the moment its locked as it says its in review process, I cant login to live help its says your user name is in use, loging with other user name. I am trying this but it doesn't let me. I also can't resubmit as there is no option for that anymore. Please help! I also can message to any of the reviewer.

Here is the link. Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Atilla Iskifoglu

Many Thanks

Deborah — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dkremer (talkcontribs) 14:50, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That article does not seem to be locked. It was declined in October, there have been changes since and it is now marked as review in progress which may indicate changes are being reviewed. RJFJR (talk) 14:54, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I read more carefully, it is being asked to hold review while inline references are being added. When the work is done that message should be removed. RJFJR (talk) 14:58, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken that message out, since it's obviously causing some confusion. Since the "review in progress" tag has been there for several days I think it's safe to assume that the review isn't taking place. Deborah, when you believe you have added sufficient references, you can resubmit the page for review by placing the code {{subst:submit}} at the top. Yunshui  15:04, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

MPG explanation[edit]

Hey, i got a new Peer Review but the editor has asked me to explain mpg-imp so that people know what it is...Basically i have no idea and was wondering if someone else can explain it in a simple way i can include in the article. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 15:22, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading text[edit]

This is my second correspondence about uploading text. I have an article my brother wrote in the local newspaper I would like to upload to wiki but I do not have URL or a site. I just have the text because the main library does not have the article archived online and neither does the newspaper. What can I do? This is the URL for the submitted wiki article.

This activity is becoming quite large in my area and in other places. I fear that it will become larger than myself and I won't be able to copyright it in time that this article does not become authentic.

Thank you for your time — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.229.45.181 (talk) 17:19, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you're looking to use the newspaper article as a reference, you could just cite the newspaper article. The appropriate Citation Style 1 template is {{Cite news}}. - Purplewowies (talk) 17:23, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) What do you mean by "upload to Wiki[pedia]"? If you want to use it as a reference there is no need to "upload" it anywhere, just use the appropriate citation template, probably {{Cite news}} in this case, filling in as many of the parameters as you can. I will say though that one article written by the co-inventor of this game will not be enough to establish its notability, so unless you can find more reliable sources this draft will never make it into mainspace. Even if it did, having an article on Wikipedia will not help with "copyright" -- if you want to protect your game you need to consult an intellectual property lawyer. Finally, please take a look at WP:MADEUP.--ukexpat (talk) 17:26, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization discrepancy[edit]

There's probably some kind of error in categories at Gangnam Style - many of those in the edit window seem to be absent in the normal view, which includes non-existing Singles certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand and Singles certified ― by the British Phonographic Industry. I tried to purge and bypass the cache and also checked the categories of Template:Psy, but to no effect. Brandmeistertalk 17:47, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give an example of a category that is visible in edit mode but not in read mode? I count 28 categories in the edit window and 37 categories when I view the page in read mode (excluding hidden categories). -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:14, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So "Singles certified..." are now hidden I presume. I don't have a good grasp of editing the new hidden certification and don't know how to fix or remove the non-existing categories, such as Singles certified ― by the British Phonographic Industry. Brandmeistertalk 19:32, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think those categories are automatically created by {{Certification Table Entry}} in Gangnam Style#Sales and certifications. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 19:54, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And some are auto-generated by the {{Singlechart}} template.--ukexpat (talk) 19:56, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
None of the "Singles certified..." categories are hidden and I don't understand your posts. You apparently say more categories are displayed in the edit window [2] than in the normal view Gangnam Style. Which categories? I see 9 "Singles certified..." categories in the normal view and none of the 9 in the edit window, since they are all template-added. 2 of the 9 are the red Category:Singles certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand and Category:Singles certified ― by the British Phonographic Industry. You say those two are in the edit window. Are you really saying you see them in [3] but not in Gangnam Style? It is the complete opposite for me. Did you swap "edit window" and "normal view" in your post? PrimeHunter (talk) 20:20, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, sorry, I mean that Singles-certified cats are absent in the edit window. Could somebody remove the red ones? Brandmeistertalk 21:53, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification. The two categories are added by these:

{{Certification Table Entry|region=New Zealand|type=single|artist=PSY|title=Gangnam Style|award=Platinum|number=4|certyear=2012|relyear=2012|id=2101|autocat=yes|certref=<ref name="rianz">{{cite web|url=http://nztop40.co.nz/chart/singles?chart=2110| title=New Zealand single certifications – PSY – Gangnam Style| publisher=[[Recording Industry Association of New Zealand]]| accessdate=2013-01-21}}</ref>}}

{{Certification Table Entry|type=single|region=United Kingdom|artist=PSY|title=Gangnam Style|award=―|autocat=yes|salesamount=878,000|salesref=<ref name="ukyearend"/>}}

The documentation is at Template:Certification Table Entry. I know very little about music and am not sure what to do but I think either the award and/or number parameters should be changed to match existing categories, or the red categories should be created. Adding a table[edit]

I just need to know how to add a table to a Wikipedia article. Can't seem to find it in any of the tutorials. Thanks!--UniScores (talk) 20:30, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did you find HELP:Table and WP:Table? If not, start there. RudolfRed (talk) 20:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) In the first section titled Using the toolbar at the first page RudolfRed mentions, you can see where in the editing toolbar you can find an option to create a table. In the same section below, there is also some code you can simply paste into an article to create a new table. Let us know if anything is unclear. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 20:37, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

protection for Rules of chess[edit]

Rules of chess has been protected for a year and a half. I think we can try unprotecting it now. How is that done? Does it have to be an admin? Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 22:08, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It can only be done by admins. See Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:16, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually you can edit it after you wait four days. It's "semi-protected" againt IPs and new users. –BuickCenturyDriver 23:45, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Bubba73 is not an admin and has edited it many times during the semi-protection. The question was who can unprotect. Only admins. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:34, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can, if you wish, make a case for unprotecting the article at WP:RFPP. --Jayron32 00:04, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
