Article quality scale grading system[edit]

How do quality scale grades get assigned to articles? Is there a procedure for submitting for review or something? I'm aware of how to nominate for GA, but I've been working hard on the Chicago article and would love to see it get bumped up to a B. — MusikAnimal talk 04:10, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Except for FA, GA, and A-level, all other grades can be assigned by anyone, including you, if you feel confident that it meets the criteria spelled out for that level (B, C, Start or Stub). A-level grade is handled by Wikiprojects (and if you can't find an active Wikiproject that gives out A-level grades for your article, forget that). GA is handled at WP:GAN and FA is handled at WP:FAC. I hope that helps. --Jayron32 04:19, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It does, will coordinate with others to see about a B. Chicago GA on the horizon. Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 04:24, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And just out of curiosity, we don't do topicons for A-class? I see GAs and FAs but A falls in between the two? For an example this revision is supposed to be an A per WP:1.0/A. Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 04:33, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No A is lower than GA. It is also usually the opinion of a single reviewer, while GA may have several and FA certainly will. Rmhermen (talk) 13:14, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

headline[edit]

I just completed an entry for the first time. The "headline" is my user name so when searching on the internet, it is under the user name instead of the subject of the entry. Could you please tell me how to edit my entry so the top headline is the name of the subject? Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moremohonk (talkcontribs) 04:41, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest in adding an article. I would suggest starting out by reading WP:Your first article. Apteva (talk) 04:57, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The article needs to be moved to the correct name (presumably Kathleen Clark (playwright)). However, it would quickly be deleted if it appeared as an article in its current state - it has no sources, does not seem to suggest Ms Clark meets the relevant inclusion guideline, and is slightly (though not overtly) promotional in its tone. I'd suggest submitting it via Articles for creation, so that you can get some help fixing these problems before it goes "live". To facilitate this, I'm going to move the page to a subpage of your userspace (User:Moremohonk/Kathleen Clark (playwright)) and will add a template at the top which you can use to submit it to AFC once you're ready. The most important thing to add is references; see this page for some help doing so. Yunshui  07:45, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The image under discussion would appear to be File:Happiness.jpg. Keri (talk) 08:10, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Marie. This article may help set your mind at ease. The information above refers only to the source for the picture "Happiness" by Sabrina Campala, and does not reflect the source of photographs of your child (which would have come from your own Facebook uploads). Yunshui  08:13, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Several IPs have complained at WP:RD pages about this. What they're really seeing is this Facebook page, which is re-using Wikipedia content and then displaying pictures (from their own Facebook friends' pictures and their own) that matches "newborn". Naturally this is nothing to do with Wikipedia, the photos in question aren't hosted by Wikipedia, and complaining to Wikipedia is pointless. It's a 100% Facebook problem, and it is to Facebook that respondents should direct their ire. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 08:47, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We have had several complaints like this recently. But Marie is is the first complainant to specify what picture the complaint is about, and I would like to thank her – it is much easier to look into a complaint when we know what image is involved. But I am puzzled. The photograph "Happiness" was uploaded to Wikipedia in 2008, by someone claiming it was taken in Salerno, Italy. Marie appears to be posting from Manchester, England. Marie, are you claiming that the "Happiness" photograph is of your own child? Maproom (talk) 08:58, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We have received many confused posts from Facebook users about this. Marie said "here is the details of the person that shared it". I guess Marie didn't describe her own photo but incorrectly thinks the Facebook page was made by the author of File:Happiness.jpg. The page was actually made by Facebook who used a picture from Wikipedia. Marie, other Facebook users (except possibly your friends) do not see your private photo on that page. A Facebook page can display different images to different people. If you log out and view the page again then your photo should be gone. I made an edit to this article, but the history page is showing the edit as being made by user:Ahmedzas. Is this a known problem? Op47 (talk) 12:18, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you and Ahmedzas made the same edit at nearly the same time, reverting to the 27 April version, but Ahmedzas saved first. This means you made a null edit when you clicked Save page, because you saved what at the time had become the current version of the page. A null edit returns you to the page with no message, so it looks exactly the same as if your edit had been saved. It has happened to me several times when I reverted an edit. Dear Wikipedia Editor, I have recently revised the entry Transmode I have written this article for Wikipedia on behalf of the company which operates in the same business sectors as Cisco, Alacatel-Lucent and Huwei Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei However the Wikipedia Transmode entry has various warnings and advisories: - This article appears to be written like an advertisement. Please help improve it by rewriting promotional content from a neutral point of view and removing any inappropriate external links. (March 2010) - This article may require cleanup to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. No cleanup reason has been specified. Please help improve this article if you can. (March 2010) - This article needs more links to other articles to help integrate it into the encyclopedia. Please help improve this article by adding links that are relevant to the context within the existing text. The article has been speedily deleted as far too promotional in tone and content - please see WP:SPAM. Also note, that you have an almost insurmountable conflict of interest here as you are, apparently, being paid to write this article. Although you probably disagree, it is very hard for someone with a conflict of interest to maintain the neutral point of view required for a Wikipedia article, and that's why people with a COI are strongly discouraged from writing and editing articles where they have a conflict.--ukexpat (talk) 13:49, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

add images to article[edit]

Hello, I have previously successfully added an image to an article, but recently I have tried using the same tutorial, but after saving the edit, instead of the image appearing in the article, only a link inside a frame appeared. This link went to the "file upload wizard". What am I doing wrong? Impressionistic (talk) 14:37, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to your list of uploads to Wikimedia Commons, the file is named with a "jpeg" extension not "jpg". I have fixed the article for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:43, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, I should have noticed.
Thanks, John Impressionistic (talk) 15:07, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If we are talking about Lee Bracegirdle, you need to do some work on references and content. Although it has some external links, the article does not have inline citations. Please take a look at WP:REFBEGIN for help with that. More serious, it also reads like a resume and appears to be a very close paraphrase if not a copyvio of the resume on his website. You will need to fix that ASAP otherwise it will be deleted as a copyright violation.--ukexpat (talk) 16:57, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Eliminating spam[edit]

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. I hope this helps. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 16:36, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But one way to reduce spam is to avoid posting your email address on public pages such as this one. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:38, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
At the top of this page, on which you have just posted your question, it says:
  • This page is only for questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia. For other types of questions, use the search box or the Reference desk
  • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
Having said that, you might find some of the links in the article Anti-spam techniques helpful; or you could ask on the computing reference desk. --ColinFine (talk) 16:38, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you view the page User talk:69.123.6.249, where the message has been posted, the system should stop giving you the "new messages" banner. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:36, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would be true with the orange bar, but with the new notification, I believe the only way to eliminate it is to actually click on the notification. Apteva (talk) 18:18, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to Help:Using talk pages#You have new messages, unregistered editors still get the orange bar. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:50, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@ OrangeMike[edit]

Hi OrangeMike,

I would like to find out why the page I created on the Swedish company Transmode has today been deleted - after several years of being displayed.

I made some changes to it earlier today to update the content: financials, personnel and similar business related material - but now it has been removed.

I noted on the Talk Page that some similar companies have Wikipedia pages without apparent problems (e.g. Cisco and Alcatel Lucent) but somehow the Transmode content is not acceptable?

Please can you explain what I need to do to make this Transmode material acceptable.

Regards,

Matthew Peach — Preceding unsigned comment added by Matthew62 (talkcontribs) 18:52, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You asked about this article earlier today, see the earlier section on this page. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:58, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could go to Articles for Creation and request that someone else write an article about the company. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:18, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Susan J. Elliott[edit]

Susan J. Elliott (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I have a cite at the top of my page which states: A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies, particularly neutral point of view. Please discuss further on the talk page. (April 2013)

I did not start my Wikipedia page. It was started by two readers of mine and they agreed to maintain it but they do not know everywhere I am cited. However, and everything on the page is factual. Whenever a magazine or news article cites to me or my book, my publicist from my publisher or me will add a footnote for legitimacy.

I have not added anything that is not fact. Everything on the page is simply fact about the book and my work. Please let me know how I can remedy this at the top of the page as it makes me appear self-promoting of which I am not.

There is much more which could go on this page and is not there. I have tried to NOT put every little thing on there or connect to every article written about me or my book or my work. There is much more that can go on there and I refrain from doing it as I want to adhere to Wikipedia's guidelines. I recently footnoted several magazines I was cited in because I was asked to by my publisher. If that is a violation, I would like to know.

To me, that is neutral and gives an air of legitimacy to what is being written about me. If I am not allowed to edit my page in this way, please let me know. Thank you.

Assuming you are in fact Elliott, you should read WP:PROMOTION, WP:COI and WP:AUTOBIO. That note obviously belongs on this article, since neither you nor your publicist nor your publisher should be tampering with it, due to your obvious conflicts of interest. Instead, you should have made suggestions for improving the article on the talk page of the article. Note also: it is not "my page": it is an article in an encyclopedia, not a MyPage or Facebook page; you do not own it in any way. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:30, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for not editing the article yourself, which would be a conflict of interest. However, if your publicist is editing the article, that appears to be a conflict of interest, so that the tag is still appropriate, and the article still could benefit from cleanup. (The article doesn't appear to be promotional because it has that tag. The article has been tagged because it appears to be promotional.) You may provide information on the article talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:32, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, by her own admission, she has been editing the article, as well as adding herself as a "notable local" to the article about her part of the Bronx. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:12, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but that "article" is a blatantly advertorial hagiography with completely inadequate referencing and serious structural problems. A complete rewrite might be able to save it - provided it passes the notability rules. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:39, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did not write an autobiography!!!!!! I am not the original author of this page and just recently added citations to make the material stronger.[edit]

Two of my readers created a page for me a few years ago. I monitor it for vandalism. Recently I was asked to update it to include recent magazine articles and places where I have been quoted. I did so. It was neutral and factual. I did it to maintain the integrity of the page. I could ask the readers who originated the page but am not in constant touch with them and don't even know if I have their addresses.

Apparently EDITOR ORANGE MIKE thinks I have made this an autobiography page. IT IS NOT. His accusation of this is LIBEL. His editing is OVERREACHING. Everything in the article is TRUE AND FACTUAL.

Please remove this page if you think that. Everything on here is FACTUAL an I am an established author with a best selling book on Amazon. Please see the book on Amazon and the over 150 5-star reviews. It was About.com's 2009 Breakup book of the year as well as many other awards. There is so much about the book and me that is NOT on there. There are so many new things I have done that are not on there as I did not want to make it too much.

Please review my reviews and the many articles about me. Please do an internet search about me. PLEASE REMOVE ALL REFERNCES THAT THIS IS AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY WHICH IT IS NOT.

I DID NOT CREATE THIS PAGE and ONLY RECENTLY ADDED REFERENES TO MAKE IT RELEVANT AND UP TO DATE.

Orange Mike is wrong and I consider this slander about me. I am an attorney (yes Orange Mike, you can look that up!) and I want these accusations that it is autobiographical or I want the page REMOVED.

I am a living person and I consider Orange Mike's comments to be libelous. And I will take action if he accuses me of having written this page myself and I will send you to the reader who originated it and is not someone I am personally acquainted with.

PLEASE REMOVE THE PAGE OR ANY ACCUSATIONS THAT IT IS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL OR I WILL TAKE LEGAL ACTION.

But if you really are Susan then please heed the warnings you're getting for your own sake. I've seen people keelhauled in the media for editing their own Wikipedia articles (Just web search the phrase and you'll run into stuff like [3] where the people sound as innocent in intent as you do) The changes you've made really aren't that much, so there's no reason to take all this flack when you haven't gotten anything much out of it. GB (musician) on Wikipedia[edit]

hi there, i've attempted to create a wikipedia page for myself, Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker (recording alias GB) as i am a world renown electronic music composer and producer, having released lots of music over the last ten years. each time i have tried to create my page, it gets deleted, even when i cite all easily findable sources. why is this?? how can i create this page once and for all? thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gftdblsd (talkcontribs) 20:27, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have a conflict of interest. Please read the policy on autobiographies. I suggest that you go to Articles for Creation and ask to have a third party write an article about you. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:33, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The relevant policy here is probably Wikipedia:Notability (music). I've not seen the article in question, but I suspect that it may be that you've not provided the necessary citations to indicate that you meet our notability guidelines. As Robert McClenon suggests, you should also read Wikipedia:Autobiography: we strongly advise against writing an autobiographical article, as it frequently leads to problems. How to handle edits regarding a persons personal relationships[edit]

I'm aware of general WP:BOLP policies, and that anything regarding personal life is going to need an accompanying reference. But let's say you do have a reliable reference that Bob is currently dating Jane. Bob is the subject of the article, and Jane is of some notoriety. I'd consider any such edits unencyclopedic unless it is a significant relationship with some crazy press coverage. I mean who cares who they're currently dating, engagement is a different story. Maybe Bob just met Jane last week. I feel like there must be a more thorough WP-namespaced essay touching on how to handle current relationships, as such edits are very popular among newcomers, and most of the time I feel they just don't belong there. Thoughts? — MusikAnimal talk 21:05, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Look at WP:BLP, and its guidance on what sources to avoid, avoiding gossip, and other related topics. RudolfRed (talk) 21:47, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Would this be fair use?[edit]

There is some support for adding an image to the article Ed, Edd n Eddy that would show the main characters of that series making a cameo appearance in Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. I'm pretty sure that the general policy on Wikipedia is that screenshots are only allowed to be used in articles where the primary focus is on the work that the image was taken from. Might there possibly be an exception in this case though, since the main characters of the series that the article is about would appear in the image? --Jpcase (talk) 22:40, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ask at WP:MCQ. That's where the copyright experts hang out. RudolfRed (talk) 22:43, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. Thanks for the tip! --Jpcase (talk) 00:35, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Matilda the Musical-Incorrect listings for original Broadway cast[edit]

Dear Wiki.

You have the understudies and the swings listed as the originalBroadway roles . This production was NOT triple casted like it was in the UK with the children. For example: the only Hortensia is Emma Howard....Madilyn Morrow is the swing that covers two roles as a "swing". She should be listed as a swing. You also listed some of the understudies for the roles. There is only one "Bruce" ...Jack Broderick and only one "Amanda Tripp"--Beatrice Tulchin. Thank you and please make the corrections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Namaste1955 (talkcontribs) 23:13, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
