CSID acronym[edit]

'Enclosed letter from AT&T re a program that they offer which tracks possible ID theft. Looked up CSID on Wiki and found no mention of this one. Thought you'd like to have the info. RonGrauer — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.6.236.80 (talk) 01:57, 11 May 2013 (UTC) [reply]

Is this about an article on Wikipedia? Which one? RudolfRed (talk) 02:32, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you're suggesting that the disambiguation page CSID should have another entry: I'm guessing you're referring to this, which is not from AT&T, but it is apparently offered by them. The answer is that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collector of information: if the CSID company/product meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability (generally, that multiple reliable sources independent of the company/product have written about it), then there may be an article about it, and in that case it should certainly appear in the disambiguation page.
If you can find such references as are required to establish notability, then I suggest you either try writing an article about it, or request one at WP:Requested articles.
Here are some links which might help: Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL. I think this one is probably relevant, but not knowing about the subject I am having difficulty sorting out which of the many google hits actually refer to this company. --ColinFine (talk) 10:42, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Password reset error[edit]

I am not able to login or reset my password (userid: booradleyp). I was able to login till yesterday and today i got "Incorrect password entered. Please try again." message. I tried using the "forgotten your login details link". A new password was sent to my mail id. I used that temporary password to login. But when i get to the "change password" screen to set a new password, i get the "incorrect password entered. please try again" message again. I have tried five or six times now. Same results - i get the temporary password without any problem, but when i try to use it and go to the change password page, i get stuck. Can someone please help me. - User booradleyp — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.197.193.228 (talk) 04:20, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is probably a better idea if you added it to the Korean Wikipedia then someone can translate it to English. Please note that all articles on Wikipedia must be based on published sources, grandmother's recipe is not a usable source. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 06:40, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Change Display Name on Wikipedia Page[edit]

Hi Wikipedia Folks,

When I created my account, it asked for a user name, which I typed in as "howlinwaters". Figuring this site was like most others, I'd have a username, and then be able to also have a separate display name on my page which is standard with most websites.

The display name now appears as "User:Howlinwaters", and I would like to change the display name to

"Howlin' Waters".

Can you do that, or send me instructions how to do so?

Thank you kindly for your help,

Howlin' Waters — Preceding unsigned comment added by Howlinwaters (talkcontribs) 08:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Submerged underwater weight training[edit]

Can we have an article on underwater weight training? I saw this guy if you google underwater weight training videos

Or

Just curious to know more!

Thanks, Alex — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.236.227.194 (talk) 11:38, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you can find reliable secondary sources that discuss this then an article can be created. The videos are not reliable sources and neither is the link you provided. There are a couple of ways you can do this. You can create an account and then create the article or if you don't want to make an account you can use the articles for creation process. I would suggest before using either process you read WP:FIRST. That is a page that helps you understand the requirements for writing your first article. GB fan 12:04, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect Password Problem![edit]

Hello. I was opened the subject in previously but nobody did not cure my problem. I have got a Wikipedia account but I can't access in Wikipedia in the past few months, whereas I was numbers of time renew my password. Why is there all this trouble and what is the solution? 78.160.10.212 (talk) 11:43, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It works for others. Usernames and passwords are case sensitive. What is the username? Can you get a new password at Special:PasswordReset? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:43, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Contact me[edit]

Since you are ignoring emails and continuing to threaten me on a personal basis, as well as continue to attack me personally on the pages of wikipedia, I am now having to resort to posting a message here in order to have someone step in and resolve this problem. If this message is also ignored, then the next step will be legal. action. TheRealJKO (talk) 14:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't make legal threats on Wikipedia, as it can result in you being blocked from editing.
I'm not sure that your demands like this one can be acted upon - you can't dictate whether people can discuss statements about you on Wikipedia. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 14:26, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have now threatened me three times. You leave me no choice but to escalate this matter. You have slandered me and threatened me. Good luck. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheRealJKO (talkcontribs) 14:38, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that what happened is TheRealJKO blanked or deleted a section of the talk page at Eurovision Song Contest 2013, claiming it was defaming him. He was then given warnings for disruptive editing on his talk page. Those are the threats (to block him from editing) to which he refers. He then deleted those also. This is now at WP:ANI. The Monty Hall problem.[edit]

The article on the Monty Hall problem is a load of nonsense, for when the contestant is confronted with the knowledge that there is no car behind door C the probability of him having chosen the wrong door is immediately reduced (as per the law of cause and effect) from a 66.6 probability of being wrong to a 50 % chance of being wrong.Basically, the knowledge that there is no car behind door C is every bit as worthless as knowing that a coin has just landed on its head or that a roulette-wheel has just paid out on black. This is manifestly clear if one adds a second contestant and has him choosing a different door to the first contestant.Do the mathematicians seriously expect us to believe that both contestants would enhance their chances of winning if they (upon seeing that there is no car behind door C)chose the other door???????Clearly, mathematics and logic sometimes lead us to a dead-end,failing to note that the opening of door C is a red -herring — Preceding unsigned comment added by 105.228.241.202 (talk) 15:00, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you have reliable sources that contradict the article, please post them to the article's talk page. The Monty Hall Problem is counter-intuitive, but the reliable sources cited by the article support its conclusions. If you have other sources, please post them to the talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:14, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you add a second contestant, and both contestants happen to choose different doors both with goats, what does your host do? But Robert is right, this ought to be discussed on the article's talk page. Maproom (talk) 17:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can't argue with a proven mathematical concept that you can test yourself. You can only wonder at how counterintuitive it is. You really can test it yourself with the help of a friend and some cups with an object to be placed under one of them, but you have to sit down and try it enough times for statistical significance. You could always try a few hundred times here while marking your results, or here, though doing it yourself per above will avoid denial by rationalizing that the websites are rigged. I disagree that any of this needs to be discussed at the article's talk page, just as I would disagree with any utility in discussing the truth of whether the Sun and planets actually revolve around the Earth at Talk:Heliocentrism.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:47, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, suppose you and Joe each pick door A, and the host is forced to show you what is behind B and show Joe what is behind C. Well, if you can communicate with each other, you both know you're right, for sure! However, there is only a 1/3 chance of that - the same chance that it was when you picked the door at random. There's a 2/3 chance that the host is going to show one of the two of you a car ... and if the two of you can communicate that, then you will both switch to that door! But of course, in the problem as defined, he never shows cars, so there would be a contradiction with the rules 2/3 of the time. Wnt (talk) 21:04, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Usage of "deadurl" parameter[edit]

Hello. I'm having a trouble understanding the concept of "deadurl" parameter which is a part of "archiveurl". According to the usage of "archiveurl" explained in the Wikipedia:Using WebCite page, "deadurl = yes" should be set for the original URL which is no longer accessible while "no" for the one which is alive. However, when I check the reference part of several wikipedia pages, for example, "Patrick Chan", the role of "yes" and "no" got reversed. I wonder if there is something I misunderstood.

ETD: I finally understood the meaning of "deadurl" after I read Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Dead url parameter for citations — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seameetsmountain (talkcontribs) 16:12, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've just fixed most of the errors at Patrick Chan. The original URL for references 84 onwards no longer works, so I've added deadurl=yes. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:25, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In-line citations problem[edit]

I seem to have got something wrong. Over the past few months I have been editing (mostly adding to) articles in the general area of phonetics. The problem is most noticeable in the articles on 'Phoneme' and 'English Phonology'. I added citations using the 'Cite book' and 'cite journal' options on the editing toolbar, and at the time this seemed to work fine. The list of citations was compiled automatically, and I then added full bibliographic details manually in the Bibliography section that follows. However, now when I look at these and other articles I find that the citations I put in are marked in red as having no title, etc. Obviously I should have added the citations in a different way. I have figured out how to change them (using the Harvcoltxt template) so that the red warning disappears, but to do the whole lot is going to be very time-consuming. Is there a fix that will modify these citations so as to be acceptable, and what should I have used for doing in-line citations? Thanks. RoachPeter (talk) 16:04, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template {{cite book}} requires a title to be specified. It should generally be used for full book citations. If you want to use a short citation to a book that already has a full citation specified then you should use a different template, for example {{sfn}}. Ruslik_Zero 18:03, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Since the CS1 templates were never intended to be used as shortened citations, we did not take it into consideration when we updated them. You can fix this by adding |title=none. The preferred solution is to use {{sfn}} or one of the variants, as they were designed for this specific purpose and provide linking to the full citation that the CS1 template does not, and it ends up being much shorter than the CS1 template markup. --  Gadget850 talk 18:15, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've converted the phoneme page to use shortened footnotes using the {{sfn}} template. Essentially, I tweaked the attribution of the bibliography section to list isbns and oclcs, placed {{refbegin}} at the start of the bibliography list and {{refend}} at the end, then everywhere where you had a <ref>citation text<ref>, I replaced with {{sfn|authors' last name|year|p=page number}}.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:21, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help and advice. I have made a start on correcting the faulty citations. RoachPeter (talk) 12:34, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Obtained Photographer's Permission to Use Photograph[edit]

Hi all,

I discovered an image that I felt would be suitable to replace an existing image on Wikipedia due to its higher quality. The image is http://www.simonward.com/build/large/nireland/causewayblack.jpg and it was meant to replace File:Giants causeway closeup.jpg on the page Basalt.

I proposed the idea of using the image on the page's talk page, to which the general consensus was that if the author's permission can be obtained, and the non-watermarked image could be obtained, then yes, it was usable and would improve the article.

Today I received a reply from the author, Simon Ward, via email allowing me to use the image for this stated purpose. He also included a full-resolution non-watermarked version of the image to use.

Upon attempting to upload it to WikiMedia, I'm having some trouble with which option to select relating to copyright. Can anyone help?

Thanks :) HHP2K (talk) 17:35, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did the photographer release the image under a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license? Ruslik_Zero 17:53, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) You should probably ask at WP:Media Copyright Questions. By the way, you should be aware that we require the copyright holder to release the image for all purposes, not just for use on Wikipedia, as everything here is free to be reused elsewhere. Rojomoke (talk) 17:56, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A good way of sorting this out is to ask the author to agree to what's at WP:CONSENT. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:11, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of actor[edit]

I have an account- how do I edit to add actor photo and information? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Njk333 (talkcontribs) 18:26, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To add a photo, in the article where you want to add it, you put something like [[File:Laurence Olivier - 1939.jpg|thumb|in ''Wuthering Heights'']], supplying the filename and a caption. (I suspect that this does not actually answer your question. I may have misunderstood exactly what you are asking. Maybe it would help if you told us what photo and what information you want to add, and to what article.) Maproom (talk) 22:06, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you need to upload it first see: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:First_steps --Canoe1967 (talk) 23:11, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But also note, that if this is an image that you found on the internet, it is 99.99% likely to be copyright and not appropriate for upload to Commons or to Wikipedia.--ukexpat (talk) 15:47, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Whether Including A Link To Wikipedia Is Allowed[edit]

Is it allowed for a website that isn't Wikipedia to have a link to a Wikipedia page on it? There is a link to a page about Rockhopper Penguins (Rockhopper Penguin) on a website and the site owner did not get permission to use it. Yes it's allowed. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:26, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
