hey there

[edit]

Hey there,

I was wondering how to go about getting my own wikipedia page started? My name is mentioned on several other people's wikipedia pages, but is not linked to my OWN page. Can you let me know how to get this started? Thanks!

Here is my website if you need to see some stuff!

In order to have an article in Wikipedia, the subject must be notable. See WP:MUSIC for details. If you meet those guidelines, you can request that someone create an article for you at WP:RA. RudolfRed (talk) 01:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Search for multiple tags

[edit]

I would like to search for changes tagged with col-spam or autobiography. I tried putting both tags in the tag filter box with no extra operators, with anOR operator and with an OR operator and with the terms inside ()s. None of these worked. Where do i find information on article views

[edit]

Where do I find information on how many people view specific articles hour-by-hour?66.108.67.68 (talk) 02:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Go to the "View history" page for the article, and there you will find a link to see page views. It's per-day. I dont think there is a hour-by-hour view, but you might be able to get it from the raw data you can download. RudolfRed (talk) 04:29, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you need hour by hour data, you could try to send a message to the Wikimedia Analytics mailing list they might be able to help out. Zell Faze (talk) 12:44, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think "View history" refers to editing, not viewing. It's not a history of views but a view of history. When I am signed in I just see "history" but new users would see "View history".— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:39, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I wish to report this anonymous user IP address 118.210.109.199 Reason- this user who appears to be anonymous spammed edited my user page Andreaborman see here- http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Andreaborman&oldid=528133540 I had to delete my page because it was edited and I want you to ban the ip of the above user.As I don't think it's right that someone can just come along and edit MY User page and that users post was clearly spam. I reported this to a moderator here on your Talk Page months ago but nothing was done about this.So i have had to move and delete my userpage to avoid other users editing it and posting inappropriate content on it. I should have at least been given the option to lock my page but it seems there's no option to do that here. Please could you ban or block the IP of that user. Andrea Borman. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andreaborman (talkcontribs) 05:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The bad edits were made last December, and no other edits have been made from that IP address since then. Although you could request a block by posting at WP:AIV, it will be rejected as "stale". As the blocking policy states, "Blocks should not be used ... where there is no current conduct issue of concern".
It is possible to stop anonymous editors editing your user page. You could request that at WP:RFPP, but, again, I suspect that the admins there would be unwilling to apply protection when the damage was done so many months ago. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:41, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hindi article

Hi. I tried to read the History of Europe in Wikipedia in my own language in Hindi and am very disappointed to find that the content largely vary in terms of meaning. Also the content in Hindi is very less as compared to that in English. Varsha Sharma — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.168.114.69 (talk) 06:53, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Sheriffs Are Coming

[edit]

The Sheriffs Are Coming I have made two edits to this page, both of which have been reverted and I am not sure why. My second attempt was just to add the names of the enforcement officers taking part in the second series - I am not sure why this factual information has been disallowed, so any advice welcomed! Cscaramanga (talk) 11:58, 2 May 2013 (UTC)cscaramangaCscaramanga (talk) 11:58, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The editor who reverted ought to have given a reason, but your changes are more likely to survive if you provide an edit summary and if you include a reference to a reliable source to satisfy Wikipedia's requirement for verifiability. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:06, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously Inaccurate (but widespread) Material

[edit]

I'm currently doing research to update the article on Creagerstown. I noticed that one of the sources that the article currently cites includes the following text:

NOTE: The name of John Cramer as the founder of Creagerstown in other resources is an error.

— Audrey Shields Hancock, CREAGERSTOWN, FREDERICK CO., MD

From what I have seen in my research, this statement is accurate. Most of the sources that I have read state that the town was Founded by John Creager; only one book source I have found at the library says John Cramer, and even that source mentions it being John Creager later on. I suspect that this book is where the error stems from as it is widely used for research about the towns in the area.

How should I handle this? Should I just treat it as though the book says John Creager, or should I note that some sources state it was John Cramer? Or would it better to just not cite that particular section of that source? I would like to use some of the other information that is on that page, but I know if someone goes back to check the source they will see the mistaken John Cramer instead of John Creager. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you. Zell Faze (talk) 12:36, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You aren't forced to cite every single source. What makes a source reliable is that its information can be trusted. Where information is demonstrably wrong (preferably with reference to other sources), that calls into direct question the reliability of that source. The whole point of "verifiability" is that something has the ability to have its truthfulness confirmed: truthfulness is a precondition for being verifiable (break apart the word: veri- from "Veritas" or truth, -ify- meaning "to make" and -able "has the ability to"). When you see "Verifiability not truth..." mantra spoken around Wikipedia, what that means is that "Truth by itself is inadequate. What matters is the ability to confirm something is true". If it isn't true, it isn't verifiable, by definition. --Jayron32 12:48, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jayron, I am saving that brilliant explanation in my clipboard manager and I shall plagiarise it shamelessly! Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 14:04, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that the issue in that source is that it is a typo and is thus reliable for the remaining information in the text. Thank you for your explanation. I think then that the solution will be to omit that as a source for the name of the founder, but continue to use it as a source for other information about the town. That is the only spot that I have found that it doesn't match the other sources (except of course sources derived from it, which carry the same mistake). Thank you. John Laing disambiguation page

[edit]

Hi there,

I am a PR professional (working for an external agency) representing John Laing plc and have an edit I would like to make to the "John Laing" page. The section I am looking to edit is the disambiguation page . At the moment it describes John Laing plc as a "British developer and construction company." John Laing haven't actually built anything for a number of years since they sold their building arm, and so this descriptor is no longer accurate. I would like to change this to "infrastructure asset manager and investor" as per the descriptor found at the bottom of the company's press releases (one example of this can be found here: [1]) - what is the best way of going about this?

References

I have already posted this on the "Talk" page as I understand that is the best place to start, but so far received no response.

I am keen to go about this according to the appropriate guidelines, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards Sdmpwct (talk) 12:45, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, let me commend you for being prudent here; we ask that PR representatives and others with a conflict of interest do exactly as you are, which is to avoid directly editing the text of articles whose subjects they are directly involved with. It is quite refreshing as an experienced Wikipedia editor to see someone doing it "right". It makes it easier to help you. Now, I'd like to help, but I'm not exactly sure what sort of fixing you need doing. There's two articles here: John Laing, as you note, is a disambiguation page used to point readers to the correct article where a bunch of articles share the same or similar names. John Laing plc is the article about the specific company you represent. Do you need to change something at the John Laing plc article or just at the John Laing disambiguation page? And, most importantly, do you have reliable sources so we can verify the changes you wish to see made? If you can answer those two questions, I think we can move forward fairly easily. --Jayron32 12:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The place to suggest changes is on the talk page of the relevant article, so in this case Talk:John Laing. The place where you posted the message yesterday was on your own user talk page, and people interested in the John Laing article won't have seen your message there. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:24, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
... and I think that you intended to provide a reference, so I have taken the liberty of modifying your question accordingly. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:29, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you all for your help so far. The content of the actual John Laing plc page is fine, it's just the descriptor on the disambiguation page. I would like to change the description from "British develop and construction company" to "infrastructure asset manager and investor." The best reference for this would probably be the "notes to editors" at the bottom of any of their press releases. Thank you very much user:David Biddulph for including the full link above - here it is again. [1]
I will raise this on the Talk:John Laing page as suggested by user:David Biddulph. User:Jayron - does my explanation above answer your questions, and if so is Talk:John Laing still the best way of going about this?
Thanks again for your help Sdmpwct (talk) 13:56, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just change the description to "British company"? That would avoid any argument about whether and how to describe its activities; or, indent it under "John Laing (businessman)" and describe it as "the company that he founded".--ukexpat (talk) 14:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just implemented the recommendation of ukexpat, for a couple of reasons 1) Indenting the entry makes it clear the relationship between the person and the company. 2) Being more general seems to be better here for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the phrase "infrastructure asset manager and investor" sounds like industrial jargon bordering on technobabble, that is while to someone working for the company may understand such phrasing, the average reader will not be able to parse that description in a meaningful way. I'm pretty sure that's why the phrase "construction company" was used. Most people understand what a construction company does (A company that builds things). Most people would have a hard time understanding what an "infrastructure asset manager" does, so perhaps having a more detailed descriptor isn't overly helpful. People who search for "John Laing" when they are looking for that company should be able to find it easily on the disambiguation page, and if they read the article they can find out what the company does anyways. I hope this works. --Jayron32 15:06, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
👍 Like--ukexpat (talk) 16:00, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A small point, but you will probably have noticed that your attempt to show the reference above has merely produced [1] without showing the information or an active link. To get the information to show it needs a {{reflist}}, or (as this is a talk page) better {{reflist-talk}} as I used in my addition to your original question. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:11, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't state the class of your daughter, and it isn't really any of my business. However, it is my opinion that a student in high school should not be citing Wikipedia as a source (with some exceptions) If in middle school, it might be OK, as part of a long term plan to teach students how to write papers, but even there, it may not be a good idea. Wikipedia is a great resource, but if your daughter found something useful inGiant panda, she should be looking for the reference, reviewing that to make sure the facts are valid, and then using the reference as her source. the reference should have a date on it. In the rara cases that a reference to Wikipedia is valid (such as an article about Wikipedia) then one should go to the history of the article, and get the perma-link to a version on a particular day, use that as the reference, and that date as the date. (As a minor aside, it is copyright, not copywrite.)--SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:56, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

pimenta racemosa information

[edit]

I don't know how to edit here but the information about the pimenta racemosa tree or bay rum tree has some very serious errors or contain some erroneous information. Two of the most glaring are that it is not an invasive species that takes over,it is a tree that does not do well outside of the caribbean and must be physically planted and bay rum is not the same as rum. They are two totally different products not even closely related as one comes for sugarcane, molasses, and one comes from the oil of the leaves of the bay rum tree and it's oil is toxic. A Wikimedia account does not mean that you can login to all Wikimedia Chapters by that account. You can login using that account in sites where there is a little a WIKIMEDIA project picture at the bottom-right of every page next to Powered by MediaWiki like wmuk:. But as you can see, in http://wikimediadc.org/ there is no a WIKIMEDIA project at the bottom right. You will have to manually create an account on the Chapter itself. And for future reference, Wikimedia chapters do not represent the Foundation legally. They are separate and independent legal entities, only liable for the work they accomplish in their jurisdiction. --Ushau97 (talk) 16:33, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you the subject of the page that you want created? If so, you should get someone else to create it for you, because of the autobiography policy. It will need to be accompanied by reliable sources and you will need to meet the notability criteria. You can go to Articles for Creation to make your request, if someone agrees that you meet the notability criteria. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:23, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are videos of a trailer and a release date a reliable source?

[edit]

So, I'm going to edit a video game article, but I just wanted to make sure that a video/ trailer would be a reliable source for a release date? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deviljho12 (talkcontribs) 16:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would generally say yes. This page and particularly this section should have the information you need to determine if something is a reliable source. If the teaser trailer is made by the company that is making the game, than I would say that it is quite likely that it is a reliable source for the release date. You may also want to read Wikipedia:Videos as references which covers how to cite videos as references, though it may not be entirely applicable to your situation as it appears to mostly cover movies and TV shows. I would suggest that you try to find appropriate sources, and then include them as references. If you don't know how references work in Wikipedia, I would suggest that you read WP:Referencing for beginners. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing a state code

[edit]

I am trying reference a section of state legal code. The ref goes on forever, though, what with the state and year, title number and name, chapter number and name, and section number and name - and they appear out of order when I use {{cite web}}. Is there a template that I can plug all these numbers and titles into and have it come out looking correct in the ref section? (This section of the code, btw.) 71.234.215.133 (talk) 18:40, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

{{Cite act}} may do it.--ukexpat (talk) 19:29, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Yeah, there is a {{cite act}} but it doesn't give you the flexibility of the Citation Style 1 templates.

Your government at work, creating titles that are almost as long as the law. This is {{cite book}} using |at= for the section number and name:
"Chapter 78 Judicial and State Marshals". 2011 Connecticut Code Title 6 Counties and County Officers. Judicial and State Marshals. Sec. 6-38i. Special deputy sheriffs and deputy sheriffs serving on December 1, 2000, to continue as judicial marshals and employees of Judicial Department. Collective bargaining unit. {{cite book}}: External link in |chapterurl= (help); Unknown parameter |chapterurl= ignored (|chapter-url= suggested) (help)
Or because the section title is such a tangle of words, perhaps:
"Chapter 78 Judicial and State Marshals". 2011 Connecticut Code Title 6 Counties and County Officers. Judicial and State Marshals. Sec. 6-38i. {{cite book}}: External link in |chapterurl= (help); Unknown parameter |chapterurl= ignored (|chapter-url= suggested) (help)
But, as you've noted, CS1 is constrained in how it orders the elements of a citation. You could, of course, hand right a citation:
2011 Connecticut Code Title 6 Counties and County Officers. Judicial and State Marshals "Chapter 78 Judicial and State Marshals" Sec. 6-38i. Special deputy sheriffs and deputy sheriffs serving on December 1, 2000, to continue as judicial marshals and employees of Judicial Department. Collective bargaining unit.

You also might want to read About the General Statutes.

I agree completely on what the government at work is doing; I am very sick of staring at paragraphical (?) section titles.
Turns out {{cite web}} has the at= parameter also, but it is still bollixed. I am free-handing the link and using the suggested format from the CT link. While it may not be proper per the MOS here, it will get the job done. I dislike leaving it for whatever editor comes along next, but I lack the know-how to fix it myself. Many thanks for the help. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 20:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do any of the other templates in Category:Law citation templates work any better?--ukexpat (talk) 20:41, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, new playthings. Thank you very much for that category. I will have to test drive some of them, as the {{TX Govt Code}} is perfect - except for being for Texas. I am also unsure there is an actual webpage for the Code on State of Connecticut sites: the search from the external link (About the General Statutes) came back to a read-or-download script page, with nothing to link back to. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 21:05, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
List of titles doesn't do it? Isn't §6-38i the section in question?
Trappist the monk (talk) 21:30, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That works. It is not templated like Texas, but at least the links will go back to ct.gov and not a random law site. Thank you, all. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 00:11, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New messages

[edit]

I know we have a notifications option now, but is there a way to get back the orange banner that said "you have new messages"? I'm missing my postings because the new box is quite small. Paul MacDermott (talk) 18:48, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Writ Keeper has created a cookie-based workaround; if you have cookies enabled in your browser then adding this script to your .js page will give you back the orange bar. Yunshui  18:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've added it here, so hopefully it should reappear next time someone contacts me. CHeers Paul MacDermott (talk) 19:08, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just left you a message to test it.--ukexpat (talk) 19:27, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, working great now. Paul MacDermott (talk) 19:30, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please note this request for comment on the orange talk page banner's removal.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Greek alphabet edit page

[edit]

When I click on "Greek" no alphabetic characters appear. (No problem with Insert, Symbols, Latin, Cyrillic, Hebrew, IPA, etc.) What happened? When will this font be available again? Appreciate your help. Thank you. --Espresso-con-pana (talk) 20:15, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It works for me. Try to clear your entire cache. If that doesn't help then what is your browser, and skin at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:15, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I read your answer couple minutes ago, and before going ahead and trying your recommended troubleshoot, I just now checked it again and it works! I didn't have to clear the cache. I believe it was probably only temporary (these kinds of hiccups happen from time to time, usually during a WP system check or upgrade). It's just that the problem existed over a two-day period, and that's why I knocked on the door. Thanks for your answer anyway. Appreciate all you WPs! --Espresso-con-pana (talk) 04:06, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There has been vandalism to Third Amendment to the United States Constitution. Because there has been vandalism from two different IP addresses, I am having trouble in getting the last good version. Can someone either advise me how to roll back, or can an admin roll back all of the edits to the last registered editor other than myself? Robert McClenon (talk) 20:23, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone back to the last good version. - David Biddulph (talk) 20:57, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It was complicated by the fact that two IP addresses had been engaged in disruptive editing at the same time. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:00, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Political IP

[edit]

User:89.242.78.80 has made some strange category additions. The articles I looked at didn't seem to warrant inclusion. Does someone else want to read them over?--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:04, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Where are they? That IP address appears to be editing articles about people with autism. Are you referring to a list of people with autism? Robert McClenon (talk) 21:25, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They are adding BLP articles to political and religous categories. They have one as democrat and republican.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:30, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is that User:89.242.78.80, or is there a typo in the IP address? Robert McClenon (talk) 21:32, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/89.242.78.80 One edit to the autism list. The others are BLP category adds including sex offender that was reverted.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:40, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Removed unsourced categories. Robert McClenon (talk) 22:03, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The categories were probably correct, but unsourced and had to be removed. I've left the sex offender category standing because it is reliably sourced. Robert McClenon (talk) 22:08, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
