November 8[edit]

How to totally wipe out one's own edit[edit]

I made a small change to the 'Aichi M6A' article and wrote a 'brief' description of the change that I saw was about three times as long as other such descriptions. Not wanting to appear too talky, I undid the change and redid it with a shorter description. But the old edit is still there. I thought it would vanish from the history because it was me undoing myself, zero net change. Is there a way to do such a cleanup? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Treesong (talkcontribs) 01:36, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, the history is always there to give credit for the content of the article as required per the Creative Commons licensing. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:52, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think anyone will care if you had a long edit summary anyhow Ross Hill (talk) 01:57, 8 Nov 2013 (UTC) 01:57, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
full explanations are in fact a good thing. most editors, cough cough (you are not looking at me are you?), are just too lazy and resort to three letter acronyms from Wikipedia's alphabet soup. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:35, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can request for oversight but that would be unnecessary and it would be best to leave the edit there and not worry about it. Darylgolden(talk) 07:07, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Generally, all the contribution remains registered 'for ever', as TRPoD says. However, if some edit violates law, is a blatant copyright or an insult or is offensive somehow, then it can get hidden from users' view. See page Wikipedia:Revision deletion for technical explanation, esp. sections #Criteria for redaction and #How to request Revision Deletion there.
Here [1] is an example of such request. --CiaPan (talk) 07:19, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Links Band[edit]

Hi

I have to inform you that your information is not correct. There was also a member of the band 'Missing Links' in the Sixties which was Micky Dolenz who played Guitar and left to join the Monkees.

Please change your member list to include him, check if you would like.

I was an active of another band at the time and was the support band at the time and spent many discussions with him then and after the Monkees s became a major TV series.

Thank you and Regards

Graham — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.33.238.114 (talk) 05:24, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Our article The Missing Links is about an Australian band. On the Missing Link disambiguation page, Mickey Dolenz is mentioned as a member of a different outfit, that we don't yet have an article for. Perhaps you could create one, if you could find reliable sources for your recollections? Rojomoke (talk) 05:54, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Missing Link band member Dennis Raffelock stated that Dolenz was not a member of the Missing Links, despite three books saying that Dolenz was a member of the Missing Links.[2] The Monkees did produce the series Missing Links (album) and there is a Monkees tribute band called the Missing Links in which Dolenz has been present when they played. I made this edit to the Micky Dolenz article. -- Jreferee (talk) 15:01, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About the name change about Jiangsu Institute of Education[edit]

To whom it may concern,

The Chinese university Jiangsu Institute of Education has changed its name to Jiangsu Second Normal University on May 20th,2013. Hope you could make some change on your website.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.23.180.210 (talk) 09:28, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello, I've attempted to look up information regarding the name change, but have been unable to find any sources which indicate the name has been officially changed. In order for us to change something on Wikipedia, we need to have proof from some source that the change is based on fact. If you have any source, be it a webpage, book, journal, newspaper that I could reference, I would be more than happy to change it. The source doesn't have to be in English, but if it isn't, it's helpful if we can see it on the internet. Thanks!
Also, just so you know, if you make an account on Wikipedia, and become Auto-confirmed, you can change a page's name any time you wish! Hope this helps! {C  A S U K I T E  T} 14:50, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a WP:RS for that change? I searched[3] and found Jiangsu University and Xuzhou Normal University, but not the change you mentioned. The university's website still is http://www.jsie.edu.cn/ - where jsie appears to stand for Jiangsu Institute of Education. The March 1st, 2013 pagehere previously read "Jiangsu Institute of Education" and now reads "Jiangsu Second Normal University," so the name change probably took place. I think we can move the article to Jiangsu Second Normal University if someone find confirmation of the change. -- Jreferee (talk) 14:51, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,here is the well-known website mentioning our university.http://baike.baidu.com/link?url=hSZXl0HFK3dwnUmnUXG685kWl_y6TR2m-Z-dfnzgX_oD31qiSSVbE5L3TnUWms-Y4XfaSKbehhBJ3xde4UKpC_ And here is the school website but it does not have an english version.http://www.jsie.edu.cn/s/2/main.htm Hope this will help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.23.180.48 (talk) 01:06, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to find the specific diff that provided the information that is currently on an article ?[edit]

In the articles that I am interested in, there may be very long histories of hundreds to thousands of modifications. It is only possible to search for a specific diff one by one or by "cutting in half" the history file. Both are extremely lengthy. I would like to find quickly only the specific introduction of a text and references that are in the current article. Is that possible ? Thanks !רסטיניאק (talk) 09:38, 8 November 2013 (UTC)רסטיניאק[reply]

Go to "View History", then look for "Revision History Search". This will take you to WikiBlame, an off-wiki resource which can search for individual revisions where a particular section of text was added. Yunshui  09:44, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I never used WikiBlame before and attempted to do so. I tried using WikiBlame to find the edit that added "start date for the search" to the Wikipedia:WikiBlame page, but received "Your search term was not found at all." What settings should I use at WikiBlame to find that text? -- Jreferee (talk) 14:32, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I've just tried to replicate that search and have tried several others using various articles - no results for anything. It's conceivable that the tool is down at the moment. The good news is that the Article Blamer does still seem to be working, so the OP might like to try that instead. Yunshui  15:05, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Clarify a specific part of the text.[edit]

Hi! I would like to add a {{clarify}} tag to a couple of sentences, and show exactly which sentences need clarification. How do I do this? Lova Falk talk 12:39, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Lova Falk: The template's docs tells us how to use it. For example, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.{{Clarify|date=November 2013}} would appear as 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.[clarification needed]'. --Glaisher [talk] 12:46, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Glaisher: Actually, that is not how I mean. What do I do if I think Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit is perfectily understandable, but consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua needs more clarification? Lova Falk talk 13:03, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Glaisher: I found it thanks to your pointer to template's docs! Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.[clarify] This is what I meant. Image load request with alteration[edit]

Resolved

I'm looking to add a picture to the page for Rex E. Lee and found [4] from a government website, but it feels odd to use it with the "frame", where would I request that it be loaded with alertation, or should I load it and then ask somewhere for it to be altered?Naraht (talk) 13:53, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Upload it to Wikimedia Commons and ask Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop to improve the photo. -- Jreferee (talk) 14:13, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you that worked. I also got images from the same Department of Justice website for the other 5 (non interim) Solicitors General that we didn't have and have put them in to be frame stripped.Naraht (talk) 18:11, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Self-promotion in user space[edit]

Hi. Which is the appropriate place to raise concerns about an editor who is using their user page for self-promotional purposes, despite being warned? WP:ANI seems a bit heavy-handed to start with, so I wanted to know if I should go elsewhere first. Thanks. --Drm310 (talk) 15:07, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you have given escalating levels of warnings and they still persist, then ANI is your next stop.--ukexpat (talk) 17:32, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As (I assume) the user has made 133 edits; 118 to their user page, 13 to upload files for their user page, and only 2 to articles, they do not appear to be here for the benefit of the encyclopedia. Arjayay (talk) 17:45, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see you've now tagged the material as a userspace draft, which is in line with policy considering the subject is potentially viable, even if it is currently unreferenced, promotional and unencyclopaedic in tone. Out of curiosity, does anyone know whether there's any guidance as to how long this can reasonably be permitted to remain before it can be prodded per WP:FAKEARTICLE? - Karenjc (talk) 19:03, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a lot of patience for people using Wikipedia to blatantly promote themselves so I've blanked it per "if of some potential but problematic (e.g., BLP issues, reliability issues, promotional issues), then blank during periods of inactivity" (no sources, clearly promotional). --NeilN talk to me 21:40, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cucumis metuliferus[edit]

Hi, When I was researching information about the horn fruit or Cucumis metuliferus, I was directed to the following page: Cucumis metuliferus#Gallery.

My question is how do I add additional information and upload photos about our South American, brand name, Cuke-Asaurus TM horn fruit? We have been growing this since 1989 in Washington State and in Chile, S.A.. Our website address is: [redacted]. Appreciate any assistance here, as we are very knowledgeable about this distinctly different fruit in outer appearance, and more pronounced deeper orange color. Thank you for your time.

Wikipedia is not here to promote your company or your brand. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 16:37, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, if your brand is well known and people might want to know more about it, some information might be appropriate. You have a conflict of interest and would have difficulty writing from a neutral point of view, but if you can find multiple independent reliable sources, you can post on Talk:Cucumis metuliferus and if others agree the information is suitable, it can be added.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:53, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do we cite a source if we're the source?[edit]

Hello, we wanted to add our band's name to the list of tribute bands in the Tribute Act article. I did and it got removed and I got a message from Areaseven advising not to add things without verifiyng it by citing a reliable source. Can we cite our own press releases? Any written reviews in local media may not be available online as we performed between 1987 and 1992. Thank you very much for any help!Suzeesg1234 (talk) 17:13, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, press releases are not reliably published sources. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:15, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The list was of "List of well-known tribute acts". To be added to this list, there must first be a Wikipedia article about the band. Please read WP:BAND for our guidelines on whether a band should have an article or not. --NeilN talk to me 17:21, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Coverage does not have to be online. It just has to meet the requirements for reliable sources and something a determined person might be able to find.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:55, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion procedure for unneeded /Temp subpage?[edit]

What's the right way to go about requesting deletion of an unneeded /Temp subpage? Specifically, Mitchell S. Steir/Temp. I was going to ask the creator to blank it and add {{db-g7}}, but notice that another editor has also edited it, so (if I've understood rightly) that criterion is no longer applicable. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:42, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MFD maybe?--ukexpat (talk) 19:57, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
These copyright re-writes are supposed to be created in the Talk namespace. Since the main article space does not support subpages, what we have here is an article titled "Mitchell S. Steir/Temp" -- John of Reading (talk) 08:18, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for making that clear, I was having trouble reconciling the apparent subpage-in-no-subpage-space contradiction. Not knowing how else to deal with it, I have speedy-nominated it as an A10 of the "parent" page. I'll be interested to see if that works.
If there is consensus somewhere that these pages should be created in talk space then some changes are probably needed to {{Nothanks-web}} which as far as I can see is set up to create them as it did this one, in article space; and/or to {{copyviocore}}, which calls it. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:12, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can make out, both those templates generate a link that creates a "/Temp" subpage in the talk namespace. Here is a revision of Mitchell S. Steir with the {{copyviocore}} template in place. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:45, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism on the American Dream page[edit]

"Can I haz American Dream?"

Hello someone has vandalised the American Dream page with references to "cats". The vandalism although juvenile in its content is committed in a reasonably sophisticated way so as to avoid detection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.139.249.26 (talk) 21:00, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is correct, I was not trying to take credit. I went through the revert of it including save and it all looked good when I finished but apparently TheRedPenOfDoom beat me too it. Sorry XFEM Skier (talk) 21:32, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that if you carry out exactly the same edit, you don't get an E/C, presumably as there is no conflict, but you aren't told this. Sorry if I sounded accusatory. Arjayay (talk) 21:47, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Savannah, GA in Literature/Television page[edit]

I wanted to let Wikipedia know that there is another television show that should be added to the Savannah, Ga in Literature/Television page. Romper Room was filmed in Savannah, Ga in the early 1970's. I was on the show for two weeks along with my cousin and my dog. I thought it might be nice to add this to the listings of television shows filmed in Savannah. Here is a link from you Wikipedia page for Romper Room, as well:

Miss Kay Lisicia hosted the Savannah version on WTOC during the early 1970s.

Thank you so much, Stephanie Newton — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:0:80:185:E0F6:1B6F:D2B9:5BE0 (talk) 23:13, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, several shows of that era had local "franchises", from Bozo to Romper Room. I'm afraid that's not notable at all. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:34, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think Romper Room would have shown scenes of the geographic location. The view from the magic mirror was not to the children, it was from the hostess looking into it, so the information probably would not fit in the Savannah, Georgia in popular culture#Savannah in television article. -- Jreferee (talk) 07:00, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
