How to combine succession boxes?[edit]

I added these succession boxes to the article Berlin:

Preceded by World Gymnaestrada host city
1975
Succeeded by
Preceded by World Gymnaestrada host city
1995
Succeeded by

And these to the article Dornbirn:

Preceded by World Gymnaestrada host city
2007
Succeeded by
Preceded by World Gymnaestrada host city
2019
Succeeded by
TBA

Now as it's the same event, but hosted multiple times, I'd like to combine the boxes so that they aren't separate but instead adjacent to each other, with the same width, but with a horizontal line separating them. How do I do this? JIP | Talk 06:42, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean like this:
Preceded by World Gymnaestrada host city
1975
Succeeded by
Preceded by World Gymnaestrada host city
1995
Succeeded by

Yes, that's what I was after. JIP | Talk 09:57, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

On behalf of a voluntary organisation I am trying to put an external link to each of the suburbs which are in our area but this may have been interpreted as spam, which is not true. how can I continue with this exercise?

The link is not directly relevant to the articles you added it to, so I have removed it.--Jeffro77 (talk) 08:03, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

sir , l want to join camp of mt Everest so please tell me how to join. thanking you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 8.37.226.39 (talk) 10:10, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Problem with media viewer in "mobile view" on mobile devices[edit]

See example in my sandbox: User:Mare44/sandbox —Preceding undated comment added 12:06, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

  • @Mare44: I am having the same issue on an iPad. The first two work fine and the last three don't. The third one I am able to view by opening the file in a new tab but number 4 and 5 don't want to show up at all. This may be an issue for the village pump. They handle more technical questions regarding Wikipedia. Side note, I was able to view the third image without problems in mobile view on the German Wiki (where it is also displayed). This is the only one of the broken three that worked using that method though. I tried the other two on the Swedish Wiki with no results. --Stabila711 (talk) 14:41, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

Good day, I have a quick question, regardless of the fact it makes me look like a moron. I must have inadvertently clicked on something yesterday, and now when I pull up my editing screen, the handy-dandy characters menu below the edit screen (where you can click on {{ or [[, etc.) is no longer there. Any idea what I did, and how I can correct it? Feel pretty stupid that I can't figure it out myself. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Onel5969 TT me 14:20, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Right below the editing window to the left hand side will be a drop down menu. Click on that and select Wiki markup. Is that the menu you are looking for? --Stabila711 (talk) 14:24, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi and thanks Stabila711! However, that drop down menu isn't there. What the hell did I do? Onel5969 TT me 14:46, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is it there when you log out? What is your skin and browser? Try to clear your entire cache. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:56, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict) @Onel5969: Alright, sorry for the delay. It took me a little bit to actually find the page that describes the toolbar. Have you changed any of your preferences lately? Make sure under the gadgets section the CharInsert box is checked (it is under the Editing subheader). If that is checked did you make any changes to your custom .js file recently? --Stabila711 (talk) 14:59, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. It was checked. I unchecked it, cleared the cache, and then re-checked it and cleared the cache. Still not there. And I haven't made a change to the .js in over a month. I am befuddled. Onel5969 TT me 15:07, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The only other thing I can think of is perhaps your browser is messing with your javascript? Do you have an alternative installed that you can try? Did this just start happening after an update of some kind? Beyond that, befuddled is an appropriate word. The people at VPT may be able to help you better. It is certainly odd that the whole menu would just disappear on you. --Stabila711 (talk) 15:20, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps. I'll take a look at that, and also see if anyone over at VPT has an idea. But thanks for taking the time to try to help. Really appreciate it. Onel5969 TT me 15:28, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help![edit]

Can we not do footnotes within footnotes? Please help fix at Szczecin#Name_and_etymology, where I'm trying to get this footnoted list inside an explanatory note. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 16:01, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No. But you can use {{efn}} and {{notelist}} as I have done.
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:09, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
WP:Nesting footnotes may help if this arises again: Noyster (talk), 16:33, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

School song question[edit]

Can someone point me to the information on whether including the lyrics of school songs in articles about schools is appropriate? RJFJR (talk) 16:40, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @RJFJR: According to the WikiProject on schools, the lyrics of a school song should not be included on the school's article. Lyrics in the public domain can be placed on Wikisource and linked to in the article however. See WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG#WNTI for this information. --Stabila711 (talk) 17:15, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. RJFJR (talk) 18:55, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How to update a French article?[edit]

The French article fr:Viking ADCC is hopelessly out of date. It is still claiming "the ship will replace the Rosella in spring 2010", completely ignorant that spring 2010 was over half a decade ago and no such thing ever happened, in fact now as of 2015, the ADCC still isn't even finished. I'd like to correct it myself but I'm afraid I know too little French. I only ever took one course at university. I can read it, but I'm afraid my skills in writing it aren't up to scratch to write grammatically correct French. What should I do? JIP | Talk 17:13, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You can ask for help at w:fr:Wikipédia:Le_Bistro. Ruslik_Zero 19:06, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) If you know enough French to cobble together a question, their help desk is here. Otherwise, there is a France Wikiproject here at Wikipedia:Wikiproject France. It's likely someone there knows enough French to fix it. Dismas|(talk) 19:09, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done at both places, in my somewhat barely passable French. (My little brother speaks French fluently, in contrast, he speaks zero German, which my sister speaks fluently and I do almost fluently.) Hopefully someone there can help me. JIP | Talk 20:48, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You could, of course, put something on the French article's talk page at fr:Discussion:Viking ADCC, and refer them to the English article en:Viking ADCC which has more up-to-date information. It may, however, be that not many editors have the article on their watchlists. --David Biddulph (talk) 07:20, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Script that changes links on search result page to edit page links[edit]

Hi!

I am trying to find a script that changes the links on search results pages from links to the article to "edit page"-links. So basically, the script should add "&action=edit" to every search result link on every search result page. German pop music (talk) 21:00, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@German pop music:

$(document).ready(function()
{
	if (mw.config.get('wgCanonicalSpecialPageName') !== "Search")
	{
		return;
	}
	$(".mw-search-result-heading a").each(function (){
        $(this).prop("href", "//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=" + $(this).prop('title') + "&action=edit");
	});
});

Copy the above code to your common.js and let me know if it's what you're looking for. - 185.108.128.13 (talk) 22:27, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. This works perfectly. I love you! German pop music (talk) 23:08, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
