August 9[edit]

Obama's page[edit]

Barack Obama's Wikipedia page mistakenly says "He is the first African American to hold the office and the first president born outside the continental United States. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, ...". This is factually unverified yet his page is protected. Please fix. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Npretnar (talkcontribs) 02:59, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Npretnar, the place to take this up would be at Talk:Barack Obama. Please provide sources for your claims when you post there. †Dismas†|(talk) 03:03, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Npretnar, you might also be interested in Barack Obama citizenship conspiracy theories. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:10, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The lede of the article doesn't have sources for each claim because it provides a summary for things sourced later in the article. If you scroll down to Barack Obama#Early life and career, you will see plenty of sources for his place of birth and early childhood. uhhlive (talk) 15:37, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If they meant the first statement, we don't seem to have a Barack Obama race controversy article although the issue has been discussed. Rmhermen (talk) 20:00, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alt acct?[edit]

Would it be permitted under WP:LEGITSOCK, specifically section "Technical reasons: Maintenance" to have an alt acct to use for vandalism fighting? It would be used for reverting, warning, and reporting with semi-automated tools (Twinkle etc). I'd have an alt acct notice on the userpage/talk page or redirect them to my main user and talk pages, as well as having a note in the sig such as "(alt account of Chickadee46)". Thanks! Chickadee46 talk 03:00, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I already see that you have reverted some edits under your current account. I do not see your purpose for creating another one. eurodyne (talk) 06:45, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • My personal opinion would be that it is fine, but the question is what the guidelines allow. I do not think it would fit as a "maintenance" account.
WP:LEGITSOCK as it is written is not a complete list (Valid reasons for an alternative account include... but presumably are not limited to), but you better check with people familiar with this. Chickadee46, I would recommend to post a note at Wikipedia_talk:Sock_puppetry TigraanClick here to contact me 08:13, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help. I found this, where Mike V (checkuser) and Vanjagenije (SPI clerk) said that "we generally tolerate everything that is not explicitly listed as WP:ILLEGIT." and "as long as you are forthright with the account there shouldn't any concern.", so I'll probably go ahead and create the account. The alt would be so semi-automated edits could be kept separate, especially if I later use STiki and similar tools. Chickadee46 talk 19:27, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Chickadee46, I agree that you should check with WT:Sock puppetry, and if you get a negative response there, let me know and I'll chime in in favor. It sounds like you intend to use many indicators to link your alt acct to your primary (there should probably be a mention in the other direction on your userpage as well. (It looks like there are templates for that). Have fun!Naraht (talk) 16:53, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pix entry problem for draft article on Oliver LaGrone[edit]

I am drafting an article on the sculptor and poet Oliver LaGrone, Draft:Oliver LaGrone. I have been edited twice, which work I truly appreciate. After making the suggested edits, I'm now trying to enter pictures also. I have uploaded three successfully.

BUT now I can't get correct how to enter at least two more pictures. These photos were taken specifically for documentation by the Oliver LaGrone Scholarship Fund of the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg. The picture takers want them used. The pictures are uniquely available for upload to Wikipedia. They are not copyrighted.

I will here describe the problem with one of those pictures. I've erred by getting duplicates of it into the picture files: file:"Mercy" sculpture by Oliver LaGrone in UNM Hospitals, Albuquerque.jpg AND File:Mercy sculpture by Oliver LaGrone. I don't know how to delete the one called Mercy sculpted by Oliver LaGrone. Although I once had the frame and caption appear in my entry efforts, now I can't even get that to come up. How do I delete my duplicate? How do I c correctly edit the one left?

Thanks. I appreciate your time and expertise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cordell Affeldt (talkcontribs) 17:34, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You need to have the word File: after the [[ otherwise it cannot find the image: (which also works) Rmhermen (talk) 19:46, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Only administrators can delete pages and files. I have deleted File:Mercy sculpture by Oliver LaGrone.jpg on author request as a duplicate of File:"Mercy" sculpture by Oliver LaGrone in UNM Hospitals, Albuquerque.jpg. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:05, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input[edit]

I cannot find the cite error that was flagged. Any suggestions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tn90210 (talkcontribs) 20:44, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed in [1]. You accidentally clicked something to add <ref></ref> in [2]. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:56, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Business article[edit]

Hi,

We would like our business name listed in Wiki. Our business name is CelebrityStyle.com.hk. This is also our website address. Can you tell us how we could possibly list ourselves in Wiki?

Thank you very much for your help, time and effort.

Best, Mr. Tam — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.102.128.115 (talk) 21:08, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia articles must prove that they meet our criteria for inclusion. We are not a listing site and we are not here to promote your website. Please see WP:NWEB for that criteria and WP:42 for a quick rundown on what we are looking for. We need multiple, independent, sources that have editorial oversight and a history of fact checking to have talked about you. If you don't have that then you do not qualify for an article at this time. --Majora (talk) 21:13, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Pearly[edit]

I need assistance citing for a Biography. Mr.Pearly is a new independent artist. Can you please provide me with examples on how to cite sources? ≈≈≈≈Mr. Pearly (talk) 22:14, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Mr. Pearly: For a guide on how to cite sources, refer to Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. However, you should not be editing an article about yourself, as you have a conflict of interest (see link for more information). Pppery (talk) 22:29, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Mr. Pearly, you are strongly discouraged from writing about yourself in Wikipedia - see WP:Autobiography for why. If you are a new artist, it is unlikely that you have yet received the coverage that is required for a Wikipedia article: please see WP:Notability. Wikipedia is basically not interested in anything that you, your friend, your relatives, your agents or associates, say about you (like any other subject). An article about you should be based almost 100% on what people who have no connection with you have published about you. If there is such material then somebody can write an article on you, but you shouldn't do it yourself. Please also see WP:TOOSOON. --ColinFine (talk) 10:56, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
