August 30[edit]

School wikipedia page keeps getting modified by a user that includes malicious and false accusations[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undergraduate_Student_Government_at_Stony_Brook_University

cur | prev) 13:46, 19 June 2017‎ Info4u2 (talk | contribs)‎ . . (43,945 bytes) (+740)‎ . . (undo)

User "Info4u2" has posted several different times information that is false and malicious accusing members of the University of conspiracies. Please note there are never any citations to these persons claims and only accusations by a likely former employee that has a bone to pick and wants to cause problems. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.165.84.5 (talk) 21:53, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Left warning, will monitor page and user. Ian.thomson (talk) 21:58, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The user referred to has edited twice; once a year ago which appears innocuous and once in June 2017 which does have a point of view. It has been reverted. Eagleash (talk) 22:00, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Prior to those 2 edits mentioned by Eagleash, there were various others as listed at Special:Contributions/Info4u2, going as far back as 2010. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:15, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's annoying! I was rushed and only went back three years in the page history, but missed two in 2015. The account seems only to have edited that page (and one edit to a related topic) so looks like WP:SPA. Eagleash (talk) 08:12, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editing[edit]

Hi,

My name is Andi Kyriacou and I'm wanting to edit a couple of things on my page. Currently says that I am an English rugby player when in fact I am an Anglo-Irish Professional rugby player. There are also a couple of work achievements I need to add but I'm having difficulty in doing that.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Andi Kyriacou. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andikyriacou (talkcontribs) 08:17, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is about the article Andy Kyriacou, spelled thus. The best place for your concerns may be the article's talk page. I see that some changes have already been made to it, though without references. Maproom (talk) 08:38, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Andikyriacou: You should not edit the page yourself per WP:COI, but suggest changes at the talk page as noted by Maproom. You must supply reliable sources for any changes you wish to see made. Also, please do not refer to the page as 'yours', it is is Wikipedia's page about you. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 09:34, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate accounts[edit]

Hi, so I see in a page's history that one of the editors is named foobarexample and a few days after their edit, another editor named foobarexample1 performed a similar action. It is quite clear that they are the same person. I realise that it's technically OK to have multiple accounts on Wikipedia. But should the users be notified on the potential pitfalls of doing so oslt? Is there a template for this? Or should this simply be ignored? Thanks.—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 09:57, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The policy is at Wikipedia:Sock puppetry. See Wikipedia:Sock puppetry#Alternative account notification. We cannot say whether they follow the policy without knowing the case but it's a good sign if they just added "1" to the username. I have User:PrimeHunter2 and User:PrimeHunter3. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:24, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thanks. I was hoping for a template that I could leave on their talk page to alert them to any procedure that they might need to follow. Also, is it actually necessary or recommended that I notify them? Ta.—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 10:57, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You could use {{uw-agf-sock}} if you wanted to notify them. Yunshui  11:10, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Cpt.a.haddock: There is {{uw-agf-sock}} but that seems inappropriate when they clearly indicate the connection in the username. If they don't declare the alternative account on the userpages then you can consider pointing them to Wikipedia:Sock puppetry#Alternative account notification in a manually written post. If the "1" account was created after the other account stopped editing then they may just have forgotten their password or abandoned the account for other reasons. That often happens. If they do declare it then all seems in order and there is no reason to do anything. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:16, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both.—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 12:11, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Cpt.a.haddock: You might find WP:WARN handy, as it's a giant list of warning templates. Although I gotta say the templates in Twinkle are mostly what I've been using for a few years and if there's a need for a more specific note, I just type it up like PrimeHunter noted. Thank you. This is very useful :)—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 15:17, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My edit is being reverted[edit]

Hi, I am trying to amend a page on Wiki for Wycliffe College a school in Gloucestershire. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wycliffe_College,_Gloucestershire The article says Wycliffe is one of most expensive HMC schools in the country but it is not, by a long way. In fact in Gloucestershire it is the cheapest HMC school. Someone called David Biddulph says that I am vandalizing the page and that my edit is unsourced. I don't understand what I am supposed to do? Also I want to make other amends such as change the school colours. Amanda Naylor (talk) 10:13, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Amanda Naylor: I would suggest you discuss this with the editor who undid your edits. The wp:edit summary was "Rv Amanda Naylor's replacement of sourced text by unsourced." Per wp:verifiability, you need to support your information by wp:citing a wp:reliable source. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 10:18, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reference grouping at Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh[edit]

Hey all, I can never remember how to group references. I'd consider it a favor if someone would donate a few moments to please condense the reference bloat at Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, specifically after the line:

His films were negatively received by critics, with many considering them propaganda and criticising their poor quality.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

Obviously that's a lot of references. Putting them in a group would be more appealing I think. Thanks! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:56, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Other articles[edit]

I wonder if there is any way to find a list of articles with 6 or more references in a row.Naraht (talk) 15:40, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regards, Koushik — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.185.164.3 (talk) 14:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Koushik. I'm afraid you are under a (very common) misapprehnsion. Your institute does not have the power to authorise you to edit Wikipedia's article about your institute, or to prevent anybody else from doing so. Wikipedia is the encyclopaedia that anybody may edit, so anybody may edit that article, as long as they comply with Wikipedia's policies. However you, as somebody with a conflict of interest, are strongly discouraged from editing it directly, but should rather make suggestions for edits on the talk page Talk:Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.
If the article is subject to persistent vandalism, then it may be semi-protected; but the edits must be demonstrably intended to damage Wikipedia, not simply edits that you and the institute dislike.
All information in a Wikipedia article should be sourced to a reliable published source; so if somebody is adding unsourced material, you are welcome to ask for its removal; but any information you wish to replace it should be likewise cited to a source. --ColinFine (talk) 15:29, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Default sort[edit]

Is there any quick way I can add {{DEFAULTSORT}} to pages in Category:Title and name disambiguation pages? Thanks.--Nevéselbert 15:41, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Do you want to sort Admiral Adair under Adair and so on? {{Disambiguation/cat}} could add code to automatically make a sort key without the title unless there is an optional parameter to disable it, but I'm not sure it's a good idea. An article about an Admiral Adair should probably be sorted under Adair but Admiral Adair is a disambiguation page for that specific title. I don't see a good reason to place it under Adair, and it would be confusing in cases like Admiral Graf Spee, Captain Jack, Governor Simcoe, King James, Lady Jane, Princess Charlotte and so on which are also the actual names of things. I would generally avoid sort keys in disambiguation pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:09, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gavin Rayna Russom[edit]

Hello,

I represent Gavin Rayna Russom and she has asked that her photo be removed and changed. However, the uploader is not allowing me to submit the photo. She is also going by her full name Gavin Rayna Russom and asks these changes please be made. I am looking for assistance to makes these changes to reflect Gavin's trans identity. Thank you very much. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best, Hannah Viti — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hannah.viti (talkcontribs) 15:55, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi and welcome! Your account is too new to upload photos. However, since you are affiliated with her, the best way to do this is to propose it on the article's talk page. We have some policies and guidelines in place that you should also read: WP:PAID discusses required declarations and advice for those who receive any money due to editing articles here; WP:COI outlines the Conflict of Interest guidelines that affiliated editors should follow, and WP:DCM lists the steps needed to allow a copyrighted photo (even if you own the copyright) to be used here, since we give all content away freely. Idea for DYK and/or Unusual article[edit]

Hello. How would I go about suggesting an article for Wikipedia:Did you know or Wikipedia:Unusual articles? I think Moose Cholak would be great as a "pictured" DYK article. Thanks. 72.74.198.169 (talk) 16:22, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I tried using the DYK form but I can't type anything into the template. 72.74.198.169 (talk) 20:07, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Seems you have to be registered to use that form. Unregistered can suggest DYK's and hooks by leaving a message at the bottom of Wikipedia talk:Did you know. CrowCaw 20:10, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks. 72.74.198.169 (talk) 20:36, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sergio Cotta article, formatting in Publications wont display properly.[edit]

Hi, In the Sergio Cotta article, which I'm cleaning, the formatting in the Publications section for a specific entry won't display properly. I have tried a whole bunch of different formats, and checked, but can't see whats wrong.

The specific problem is with this line: The Ptolemaic Man (Spanish: '),Ediciones RIALP, Madrid 1977 It Ediciones comes out as bold as you can see. I must have looked at it for more 30 mins but can't see whats wrong. Thanks. scope_creep (talk) 21:53, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has corrected it in this edit. --David Biddulph (talk) 23:14, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I couldn't see for trees in the way. scope_creep (talk) 23:24, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Naked singularity[edit]

Naked singularity is a section in Wikipedia article Gravitational singularity[1]. The second paragraph of this section begins "Disappearing event horizons exist in the nude, which is a spinning black hole in a vacuum." If you click on the word "nude" you will get into a Wikipedia article that has nothing to do with physics. It is an article about nudity. I presume Wikipedia has a robot making such connection and if so, the robot should be taught a little modesty and civility :-) --AboutFace 22 (talk) 21:55, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not a robot, no, just someone who thought it was funny to put that there. Fixed to its previous text. CrowCaw 22:02, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
