Old Article name lingering[edit]

Hi, yes! There's this Article that's been on my user page for several months now, it recently got moved to a new name and nowadays whenever I go check on it, it redirects to the Article and it's new name, but the OLD name is still in my watchlist. I'm trying to remove the old articles name from my watchlist add the updated one, but it only adds a 2nd duplicate of said Article. Having no luck trying to fix this dilemma.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Sorry about that, I meant Watchlist. There are 2 articles actually, Aladdin (franchise) and Happy Feet. Both of the these articles were at one point known as "Aladdin (Disney franchise)" and "Happy Feet (franchise)", there old names are still in my watchlist and I can't seem to remove them.

Zucat The old names for the articles are probably redirects to the new names and when you click on them you get taken to the new name, which isn't the one in your watchlist. YOu can either remove them as Lourdes recommends, or you can click on the old name up at the top immediately after the redirect and it will take you to the page for the old name, which you can then remove.Naraht (talk) 16:49, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input[edit]

I am trying to use the Template:Efn so that I can include a big comment from Patric Kennedy as well as the reference to where it was found. Someone on a different page that I wrote corrected my references so that the paragraph belo included a (a)footnote for the words while daydreaming...and a reference number 1 for the url:

It was early morning, the sun was just lighting up the southern California sky and the beach was surprisingly empty. The Template:Efn is in the Carol Buckley page but not in the Irshad Manji page. That is as far as I have gotten.

well the "Cite error ref no input" comes after I try to put the Template:Efn into the page but obviously I've done more wrong.

@Starling0616: I've fixed one of the "efn" notes by adding }} at the end. I haven't fixed the other one, because I'm not sure where the end of the note is supposed to be. Down in the "Notes" section, I changed the {{efn}} template into a {{notelist}} template; the first of the "efn" notes is now displaying correctly there. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:20, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Inserting links into infoboxes[edit]

Hello, can anyone please tell me how to insert links into the infobox's field in the Visual Editing mode?

@Robie M: Which link in which infobox? See Help:Link for general help. It describes how to make links with the source editor but if you edit a displayed template parameter with VisualEditor then you write the value in the same way. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:01, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@PrimeHunter: I am refering to musical artist infoboxes and internal links. For example if the artist's instrument is a "piano", how would I hyperlink the "piano" text to the wikipedia article of a piano. Same with country of birth, genres, etc. All these in the visual editor inside the infobox. For more examples, check the infobox on "deadmau5" wikipedia artist page. Ref tag error message[edit]

If you open the edit window for the page, you'll see at the bottom: <ref></ref>. If you remove these tags, the error message should go away. Incidentally, this appears to be an early draft and is not ready for primetime. It's completely unsourced and the formatting is pretty consistently messed up. Suggest you work on it in your sandbox instead. Could someone who's not about to go offline move if for the OP? Rivertorch^FIRE _WATER 17:20, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)@Ellenb7580: The error is fairly simple, there are ref tags on the page (I.e. <ref></ref>) without any content within them. I have removed them. I have also fixed some of the layout errors. I would suggest that you try to find articles about a similar subject and see how they are laid out etc. You will also need to add some sources to verify what the article contains. Upload infobox JPG image without worse-quality version being displayed[edit]

I just uploaded Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Dic_Poster.jpg for the infobox in Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series).

Using Gimp, I shrunk the original image down to 300px wide, uploaded it, and added it to the infobox. But when I looked at the page, I saw that image displayed was a significantly-lower-quality file called 250px-Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Dic_Poster.jpg, with all sorts of ugly JPG artifacts.

So then I shrank the original image to 250 px wide and replaced the previous one. The result was a new, even worse 250px-Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Dic_Poster.jpg being displayed in the infobox. (I've since reverted this edit.)

The nice-looking 250-px-wide version I uploaded is 80 KB, which is quite small. Why is Wikipedia still degrading its quality if it's already the correct size? Is there any way to display a decent-quality JPG image in an infobox?

EDIT: I just noticed that on the Zootopia page, the 220px-wide file https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ea/Zootopia.jpg is being directly displayed, rather than a worse-quality version. I assume this is somehow due to the fact that the file is hosted on Wikimedia.org...? --FrostedPenguin87 (talk) 21:41, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @FrostedPenguin87: This could be due to a variety of reasons. The file displays fine on my computer, so I would assume that you have a slow internet and the file is being shown as a lower resolution in order to speed up the loading time or you have data saving mode activated on your web browser. If you have a 4K or similar display, you might find the image is lower resolution as non-free media files should be replaced with a smaller version to comply with Wikipedia's non-free content policy and United States copyright law. According to Wikipedia's policy for non-free content, the amount of copyrighted work used under fair use should be as little as possible. In particular, non-free media on Wikipedia should not be usable as substitutes for the original work. A high-resolution non-free image is questionable fair use and may be deleted per Wikipedia's copyright policy. (description from Template:Non-free reduce). I hope that helps! Hmm... Today, I went back to the same page on the same computer, and the image looks much better! (No relevant edits have happened on the page or the image.) I notice that now, when I right-click the image in the infobox and click "view image," it takes me to the original image, on wikimedia.org, instead of the "250px-" version.
