TOC right problem[edit]

There seems to be an issue with {{TOC right}} with a few disambiguation pages, such as Gladstone (disambiguation). In the browser I'm using, it looks as if {{clear}} has been added, so instead of flowing to the left of the TOC entries appear directly below it, and thus there is a large block of white to the left of the TOC instead. This could be a skin issue.--Nevéselbert 07:13, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Looks fine to me on Firefox, Edge and Chrome. Vector skin. - X201 (talk) 07:46, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Using the Monobook skin, and I am having this problem in Edge and IE11. Chrome is fine though.--Nevéselbert 07:48, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Looks fine to me in MonoBook in Edge and IE11. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:03, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's probably a resolution issue then. @PrimeHunter: Does it still look fine if you decrease the size of the window? You might want to ⊞ Win+.--Nevéselbert 13:29, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Window size didn't affect me but I found other circumstances where it happened. I used {{Stack}} in [1] and don't see the issue now. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:55, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've not heard of problems with Edge browser before, but IE users often get poor results with TOC right. Unfortunately, I understand that is an inherent defect of that browser and it's not surprising that Edge shares the same defect. However, the proper placement of the TOC is at the end of the lead section immediately above the first section heading per WP:LEADORDER. Placing it elsewhere can cause persons using screen readers to not be able to easily access some content. olderwiser 16:53, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Need Help to go Live with Change of User Name[edit]

Hello I created an Article / Please guide me to go live.

Gopalan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avaikalam (talkcontribs) 07:58, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Gopalan. Since you created B.Sivakumar in the main article space, it is live, and anybody in the world can see it; but it will not be indexed by search engines until it has been reviewed, or ninety days have passed.
However, I must tell you that at present, it would fail review, and is at risk of being deleted, because none of the information is cited to reliable sources. You have included only one reference; and though that one looks like a reliable source, it says almost nothing about Sivakumar (one short paragraph), being mostly about the film. Please understand that because Wikipedia may be edited by anybody at all, information in it is, in a sense, worthless, unless it is cited to a reliable source. Information that you know, or that I know, or that any random person on the Internet knows, is not of interest to Wikipedia: it requires verifiability. It may well be that Sivakumar is notable (in Wikipedia's special sense), and so that the article may be saved; but you need to demonstrate that by extensive sourcing. I suggest you read Your first article, and it will probably be a good idea to move the article to draft space so that you (or others) can work on it and get it up to a satisfactory standard. --ColinFine (talk) 15:55, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How to change page title - European Landowners' Organization[edit]

Good morning,

I'm trying to change the title of our Wikipedia page, specifically the word Organisation, to be "Organization", with Z.

I've already tried to do it through the advance options without success. Could you please give me a hand?

Thanks a lot in advance. Here is the link to our page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Landowners%27_Organisation

I have moved the page to the new title. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:55, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Thank you!![reply]
ELOBrussels. Please review our policies on Conflict of interest and Paid editing. You should not be editing that article at all, and you should understand that Wikipedia has essentially no interest in what the ELO says or wishes to say about itself: it is only interested in what people who have no connection with the organisation have published about it. --ColinFine (talk) 16:01, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

how to influence/determine the width of a column?[edit]

see here e.g.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_painters . "dates" should be broader, "notes" could be smaller... thanx! --HilmarHansWerner (talk) 11:40, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Columns are as wide as the longest cell content. If you want narrower cells, use shorter content. Several long items are bare urls which should probably be made into proper references. See Help:Tables#Setting column widths for other ways of controlling table column width.

thanx. sorry for my laziness... --HilmarHansWerner (talk) 13:48, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template parameter usage?[edit]

I'm proposing a change to a fairly widely-used template, which would probably involve removing an existing parameter (because the template uses Template:Infobox, which has a limited number of fields in certain positions.) Is there a good way for me to check if any pages actually use that parameter, without checking them all by hand? I guess I could add a category for it, but that seems like overkill if there's any other way. TSP (talk) 15:45, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A search with hastemplate and insource at mw:Help:CirrusSearch may work but I cannot examine your case when you conceal the specifics. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:01, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The template is Template:Infobox residential college; I'd like to replace 'Type' with 'University' as subheader2 immediately below the college name, so would I'd like to know if 'Type' is used much at the moment. I've found a few instances but would like to be comprehensive.
I have since realised that I can just add a subheader3, which avoids the problem somewhat; though I'd prefer to avoid multiplying the number of things that can appear in this position to avoid confusion. TSP (talk) 16:07, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
hastemplate:"Infobox residential college" insource:/\| *type *=/ isn't perfect but may be sufficient for your purpose. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:02, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with editing article.[edit]

Hi, my name is John McKnight, historian for the Church of God by Faith, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_God_by_Faith

I tried to edit this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catechism about catechisms in Pentecostalism. You will see my edits to include the 1931 Catechism in the Church of God by Faith. I had trouble posting the citation. The information is found in the book, "Vision 1920,A Book of Facts" published in 2017 by myself John McKnight. The ISBN number is 978-16413687-7.

Wikipedia:Citing sources give guidance on how to cite sources correctly. Aspro (talk) 18:14, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But please read about conflict of interest, John McKnight, to understand why you should not be editing that article directly, and preferably not citing your own book. Please understand that, as with any subject, Wikipedia has essentially no interest in what the Church or its adherents or officers say about it, but only in what people who have no connection with the subject have published about it in reliable places (such as major newspapers, or books from reputable publishers). --ColinFine (talk) 16:40, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

15th Century illustration[edit]

Hi, the illustration here is part of discussion at Giovanni Fontana (engineer), clearly basically CC0, however the people who provide the illustration published it under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 DE. It is unclear if this still fits into public domain or another license. prokaryotes (talk) 18:03, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • {{PD-art-US}} probably applies, which makes it Wikipedia-eligible, but not always Commons-eligible. German copyright, which I don't know zilch about, is relevant here; but for the US side, it is public domain. TigraanClick here to contact me 19:06, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Should I upload it to commons or better Wikipedia instead? prokaryotes (talk) 19:44, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If I believe Sweat_of_the_brow#Germany (which is certainly not a good basis for legal advice), digitalization creates a new copyright in Germany (at least under certain conditions which may or may not apply). So I would suggest to upload it on Wikipedia only, and tag it with PD-art-US. TigraanClick here to contact me 11:36, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Topics[edit]

Hi, I've been working on a wiki article for a while, and will submit soon. I enjoy contributing to Wikipedia. I have edited a few articles as well. How can I find other topics to write about--that haven't been written about? Is there a pool of topics I have access to and need to be written up on? — Preceding unsigned comment added by I.Mou (talkcontribs) 19:23, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can look at Wikipedia:Requested articles. Ruslik_Zero 20:18, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Updating existing image jpg/png fails[edit]

Getting the error: File extension ".png" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/jpeg). however, either the png or jpg version, yield the same error when trying to update this image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arctic-death-spiral.png with this newer version https://haveland.com/share/arctic-death-spiral.jpg prokaryotes (talk) 21:14, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you are trying to upload a jpg, it's not an update to the existing png file but a new file with the jpg extension. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:57, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried a png and jpg with a new version. prokaryotes (talk) 22:00, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you mean and what you know about image file types. jpg and png are different image formats and not compatible. The file extension (e.g .jpg or .png) at the end of the file name should say which image format the file has. If you want to upload a jpg file then you cannot use "Upload a new version of this file" on an existing png file. You have to upload the jpg file to a seperate file page with a jpg name. If you want to use "Upload a new version of this file" on commons:File:Arctic-death-spiral.png then the file you upload must both have a png name and be in the png image format. Renaming https://haveland.com/share/arctic-death-spiral.jpg to .png is not enough. The file content must also be converted to the png format. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:32, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've resolved this when changing the image to png format. prokaryotes (talk) 22:40, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
