October 26[edit]

Article subject wants info removed[edit]

The most recent edit of Tracy Bonham removes the name of her husband, an executive editor at Rolling Stone, supposedly at Bonham's request. The fact of their marriage has been reported, based on a quick search, in the New York Times, the Scotsman, and on NPR. Would I be correct in reverting this edit, or do we leave these types of personal details out for living people (her husband does not have a wikipedia article]]? Leschnei (talk) 00:16, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, it's already been reverted. That answers my question! Leschnei (talk) 00:34, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Leschnei that was me and forgot to write here. It is properly referenced information and we shouldn't remove stuff just because the person who the article is about wants it gone unless it is controversial so I reverted the edit. NZFC(talk) 00:37, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, now I know what to do in a similar situation. I was just not sure if there was any difference in how we handle personal information for living vs deceased people. Leschnei (talk) 12:15, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Some images not being displayed[edit]

I'm not sure if this is a problem for the whole community or just me. Yesterday I noticed that some (not all) images were not being displayed, and today those same images are still not being displayed. When I have clicked on the file name on the front page for instance I go onto https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page#/media/File:Marit_Larsen_and_Marion_Raven.jpg (which says "Sorry, the file cannot be displayed. There seems to be a technical issue..." It goes onto say that I can report the issue on Wikimedia Phabricator...is this only my issue or do other editors have the same problem? SethWhales talk 07:15, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Seth Whales, the image opens for me. It could be a temporary issue. Try force reloading the page, or try some other browser. Thanks. Lourdes 09:33, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Lourdes. I tried Internet Explorer and that works fine, with no issues, thank you. However, I always use Chrome, so how can I "force reloading the page"? I have cleared the cache, is that the same thing? Maybe you can explain...thanks. SethWhales talk 10:05, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Normally, you can press <ctrl>+R (or <command>+R in case of Mac) for reloading. I've opened the image in Chrome also and I find no issues in the image opening. Why don't you try downloading the latest version of Chrome and try again viewing the image? Thanks. Lourdes 10:41, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Lourdes. Using <ctrl>+R seems to have just about cured it. It comes back every now and then but I use <ctrl>+R again and then it's fine. I have copied this Q&A into my Talk page for future reference (just in case I forget). Thank you. SethWhales talk 11:41, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unwanted apps on wikipedia[edit]

How can I remove unwanted apps on Wikipedia on Samsung j6 2016.

Sorry, don't understand your question. As far as I know, there is only one Wikipedia App, and you can remove that from an Android phone the way you can remove any other App. In any case, WP:VPT would be a better place to ask this sort of question. --ColinFine (talk) 16:43, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I believe there are third parties creating such apps. I would have thought the refdesk would be a better venue.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:27, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rittenhouse[edit]

I have learned that the Rittenhouse family of Philadelphia, PA were robbed of their inheritance and title. William and Blanche Rittenhouse left the title to their son George John Ley who was in the US Navy at the time. CO George John Ley, PT 104 and while serving his duty protecting America and allies, he was robbed of his title. Between Philadelphia, Ohio and General Eisenhower he lost through their theft his title. Its not over 'til the fat lady sings so to speak.

Are you talking about William Rittenhouse? Is there documentary evidence to show this? To add any information of this sort to the article, the matter would have to be cited to a reliable source. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:13, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Probably not that William Rittenhouse, Cwmhiraeth, as he flourished in the 17th century, whereas our OP's rather opaque wording is suggestive of the 20th.
OP, if you want us to be able to comment or act usefully, you need to give us a link to a Wikipedia article relevant to your concerns, and explain more fully – what do you mean by "title", for example? If this matter is not relevant to an existing Wikipedia article, then we probably can't help. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.202.208.54 (talk) 17:04, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

World Ballroom Dancing Champions[edit]

The year 1997 was tampered with and altered to show an American couple who have never so much as represented USA in a World Championship.

I have attempted to correct this to show that the title was won by Marcus & Karen Hilton from England.

Marcus & Karen did, in fact, win the title 9 times in succession.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.102.92.191 (talkcontribs) 26 October 2017 13:35 (UTC)

Hello,  Fixed. There was some apparent 'vandalism' to 2016 as well. Please check to see if it now seems correct. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 14:02, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What is a user page for?[edit]

Hi Wiki,

What am I supposed to put on my user page? What is my user page for? I wanted to put something there but I don’t know what I’m supposed to put. What do I use my user page for? Thanks!

From, Rae1313 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rae1313 (talkcontribs) 15:55, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please look at WP:UP for what and what not to put on your user page. RudolfRed (talk) 16:24, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Rae1313. Your user page can be brief or lengthy, plain or fancy. Its purpose is to describe your interests, accomplishments and plans as a Wikipedia editor. It should not be used for any other purpose, although experienced editors are given a little bit of leeway if the primary purpose of their user page is as I have described above. Check out the user pages of experienced editors to get a sense of what is common. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:18, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a Page[edit]

Hello,

I am attempting to create a new page. I am a new user an have made over 10 edits. How long must I wait to create a page?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Francesca.ricotta (talkcontribs) 26 October 2017 16:01 (UTC)

Your account must be autoconfirmed, which will happen automatically when your account is 4 days old and you have made at least 10 edits. RudolfRed (talk) 16:25, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Francesca.ricotta: In addition to what Rudolf has said, it might be best if you did not try to create directly in the article space if it is your first attempt at an article. You can start a page in draftspace without your account being confirmed. You can then develop the draft at your own pace with less likelihood of it being deleted. Please see WP:WIZ, WP:YFA and WP:DRAFT for more information. Please sign your posts at talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 16:33, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ali Safina[edit]

Hello there is a young Pakistani Actor who's name is Ali Safina. On wikipedia profile his height is mentioned to be 5'6" when its actually 6'4" Please correct this error as this information could hurt his career.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.214.156.192 (talkcontribs)

Hi IP, I can't see any mention of height on the page Ali Safina however that is the least of the problems with the page as a lot of the information is unsourced and needs verified sources to remain on the page. I'm also not sure he meets WP:NACTOR or WP:GNG NZFC(talk) 20:48, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question on naming Swiss LE agency article?[edit]

Should it be done at a regional basis? The Kantonspolizei Zürich article is an example of such a page written in English with the German name. Ominae (talk) 21:43, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ominae, which article are you referring to? And could you provide further description of your query? Thanks. Lourdes 03:25, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Kantonspolizei Zürich has an article in English with the German title instead of an English title. I'm asking for future Swiss LE agency article, should one use the regional name (eg Police Cantonale de Geneve instead of Canton Police of Geneva)? Ominae (talk) 08:38, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Ominae, as per the Wikipedia policy on titles, an article should have a foreign title only if English language reliable sources predominantly use the foreign title to address the subject. Otherwise, use the English transliteration. Thanks. Lourdes 11:11, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. Ominae (talk) 12:36, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
