Skin Changing[edit]

From time to time when I am selecting a page, it is displayed in a different format (skin) than the MonoBook that I have requested. The fix, nearly all of the time, is to use the browser Reload function to refresh the screen, but this is annoying and something of a nuisance. Does anyone know what causes this or how to prevent it? ~~

I tried to attach a screen shot, but can't do that. Can someone tell me how to attach a screen shot to a Wikipedia project page? Robert McClenon (talk) 01:30, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If I were to do it (attach a screen shot), I'd use a tool like Gyazo and then add the appropriate URL. MeiStone 12:43, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I should note that I'm suggesting that for transitory use, such as this help desk. For permanent screen shots, I'd take a screen shot the traditional way, save it to the computer, then upload it to the Wikipedia media namespace, and attach it to the relevant page. By the way, in Tolkien's The Hobbit, there is someone who is referred to as a skin changer. He is a were-bear. However, I am sure that the annoyance of my screen changing is not due to lycanthropy. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:30, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe skin files are failing to load so you are not seeing a "different" skin, you are seeing no skin or a partial MonoBook skin. This sometimes happens for me with Vector. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:06, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

User:Lourdes - I haven't ever seen this problem when I was browsing with Firefox or Microsoft Edge. I have only seen it with Chrome. I prefer to use Chrome for Wikipedia because it, in my experience, behaves better when I have multiple screens open than Firefox or Edge does. Alright. Probably Chrome might not be rendering the skins the way they're supposed to. Chrome has had these issues in the past.[1] Try downloading a new version of Chrome and check it again. Thanks. Lourdes 03:19, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently yes. Versions 63 released in Sep 2017. I'm not confident that this will repair your issue; but you can as well try once. Alternatively, use other browsers for better rendition. I think those are the only alternatives currently. Thanks. Lourdes 03:22, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add a DVD cover to Wikipedia please?[edit]

Good Afternoon, I note that many films have their DVD cover images on their Wiki page. I have tried to add a DVD cover image to 'The Marker' and 'Special People' by director Justin Edgar but the system will not allow me to. I notice that it's necessary to have a link to Fair Use and be able to click 'Details' which I am happy to do, however I don't know how to do this. Please can you advise how I complete these actions so that Wikipedia allows the DVD cover to be displayed?

  • Hello, Benny Hutchinson. Unless the cover art has been released under a license compatible with Wikipedia's free license (see WP:LICENSE for details), which is almost never the case, it is a copyrighted work. As such:
  1. It cannot be uploaded to our sister site Wikimedia Commons (only free licenses are allowed there).
  2. It can be uploaded to Wikipedia itself only if all the criteria at WP:NFCC are met. The most crucial points in your case is #7 (there must be a specific existing article in which the image will be used) and #3 (use a low-resolution reproduction). These criteria are intentionally more strict than "fair use" as understood in US law.
If you have checked WP:NFCC and it passes, follow the steps at Wikipedia:Upload Wizard (it should be fairly simple: check "this is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is fair use", then "this is the official covert art", then fill in the details). Once the image is uploaded to the servers, you can include it in an article following Wikipedia:Image tutorial. TigraanClick here to contact me 13:16, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Stmarksmissionary: In this edit you added <ref></ref>, probably by accidentally clicking the code below the edit box. But you have much bigger problems, including being blocked. Editing a Saved Book[edit]

I created several books. In revising my latest book, I want to change the titles and reorder the newly added pages - but these options do not appear to be present.

In testing, I opened an Incognito window and relogged into Wikipedia, then opened my book to be revised. Initially, it showed a Create Chapter option, but that did not stay - after adding more pages, it again disappeared.

I read the Help:Books page and it has very little information on revising the book (astonishingly little, in fact).

To summarize:

How do I reorder pages and add chapters to a book that has been saved?

The "Edit" button at the top of the page will show you the list of articles included in your book. You can cut & paste to change the order, and you can add further articles as required. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:48, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This doesn't help at all - there is no "Edit" button on the page labeled "Manage your book" at the URL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Book - this page is labeled a Special Page. MeiStone 13:15, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@MeiStone: Click "Contributions" at the top right and then "Subpages" at the bottom to see your saved books: Special:PrefixIndex/User:MeiStone/. Click a book. At "Edit this book", choose either "Book Creator" or "Wikitext". "Book Creator" requires JavaScript for some of the features. Wikipedias JavaScript sometimes fails to load properly for me. Reloading often helps. With working JavaScript there should for example be a "Create chapter" link to the left of "Sort alphabetically", and chapters can be dragged around with the mouse. "Wikitext" is like normal wiki editing. It doesn't require JavaScript but you have to follow the book format. The format should be easy to guess from the edit page. This answer helps a lot! Thanks... The very specific problem I have been having is this: on the section on that page that shows the book, one is supposed to be able to click on a chapter title and move it up and down - but on revision, this is not possible. There is also supposed to be several possible selections on the banner across that same section: "Create Chapter" "Sort Alphabetically" "Clear Book". However, the first of these sometimes disappears for no discernible reason. Perhaps if I switch to Wikitext, I can fix these manually. MeiStone 13:15, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@MeiStone: This is exactly the result of JavaScript not working properly. There can be different reasons for that. If it works when you are logged out then it may be a problem in User:MeiStone/monobook.js or one of the scripts enabled at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. You can also try to add ?safemode=1 to the url like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Book?safemode=1. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:51, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Info and photo to add to my Wikipedia page link from Reaching for the Skies - Lynn Rippelmeyer[edit]

I noticed that when "Reaching for the Skies - Lynn Rippelmeyer" is googled or placed in the search bar, a link to Wikipedia is available ( wonderful ) but with a picture of a man ( not wonderful ). Clicking on it does take one to the correct page and information about me, but I would like my picture there if possible. Are you able to use the picture from my Facebook page? If not, how can I send you a picture that looks like me? Also, a note says "birthdate unknown". My DOB is April 3, 1951. Can that be added? And - I did a small edit to help people find the correct episode of Reaching for the Skies if they want to see me. Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. Do you have a published source (e.g. a newspaper article, a book mention, does it say so in the documentary, etc.) that says what your date of birth is? Before you ask, this is not about you having forgotten or lying, or even you not actually being who you claim to be. It is just that information in Wikipedia articles should be verifiable.
Also, I must warn you that editing articles about yourself is strongly discouraged (see MeiStone's comment above). If you do it openly and keep your edits to basic factual information, it is fine, but if other editors disagree with you, you have no special right to override their opinion about what should or should not be in the article. Jax 0677, you were involved in the move debate itself. While IAR technically works anytime no one objects, I definitely wouldn't close a move-review where I was that involved. It's pretty much instant grounds for anyone to challenge. I brought Template:Lunisolar calendar from Korean Wikipedia for lunar date in East Asia. But I don't know why does it show "Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character "{"." The template wrote lowercase instead of the correct magic words {{LOCALYEAR}}, {{LOCALMONTH}}, {{LOCALDAY}}. The correct magic words produce numbers and the template expects numbers there. The English Wikipedia is on UTC time so {{CURRENTYEAR}}, {{CURRENTMONTH}}, {{CURRENTDAY}} give the same result and we always use those so I also changed that.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 21:39, 12 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The wiki mw: is multilingual and "i18n" in mw:Template:I18n month means internationalization. The purpose of that template is to write the name of the month in the user's preferences language. The English Wikipedia is only in English so "i18n" is a confusing name. I have redirected {{Lunisolar calendar/value/month}} to {{MONTHNAME}} instead, and used it in {{Lunisolar calendar/value}}. Does that work like you want? Is it OK if I delete Template:I18n month as a user request? PrimeHunter (talk) 10:16, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Garden City Movement[edit]

A beautiful Sept. day here in Halifax - several cruise ships in port - busy! About the garden city movement page - it is lacking one of north America's most intriguing and unique ones in history - ' The Hydrostone District ' of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Immediately after the great Halifax explosion of Dec. 6, 1917 - the greatest man made explosion in the world before the atomic bomb - part of Halifax was quickly rebuilt in the English city garden suburban style - in the ' picturesque Tudor cottage style ' - complete with wide tree covered boulevards, parks, etc.. It was Canada's first government sponsored housing suburb, and Canada's first in 'the garden city movement' style, and was a popular study topic for urban designers in North America, and Europe into the 1930's. Today, it is a declared national historic site - with its many beautiful townhouses now being privately owned. It just seems a shame that it is not included in your North American list - as it is so deserving. Thank you from English Canada's most historic city - Halifax! Come visit! Allan M. I think they want Halifax, NS added to the Garden city movement page. Original poster, please don't post in all capitals. It's like you're shouting at us. I see that our article The Hydrostone does mention the movement, but without giving a source. You should post on the GCS talk page (Talk:Garden city movement) suggesting this addition, preferably citing a reliable source where we can verify this info. Photo change[edit]

I would like to upload a different photo to the wFibular Hemimelia page.

I own the photo I would like to post.

My daughter has Fibular Hemimelia and when researching, parents are seeing a photo of a frog and it's very unsettling to them.

We as the FH parent community would like a photo of an actual child with FH.

How can we make that happen?

One of the main concepts of Wikipedia is that edits are done on the understanding of consensus. I would suggest bringing this matter up for discussion at the talk page for fibular hemimelia to see if there is a consensus to make this change or not. Some find that uploading a photograph to WP the first time around can be troublesome if they don't follow the rules. Upload it to us, via Upload Wizard. P.S. If the photograph is suitable to add to the article we can make it happen. Note: as this condition affects more than just humans so we may need to create another section in this article focusing humans. For that, your experienced input and guidance would be welcome. If you feel all you can do is to upload an image, ask around for friends who are computer savvy enough to add some supportive text to explain fibular hemimelia as it affects humans. If they are new to Wikipedia, just have them place their comments on Talk:Fibular hemimelia and we will see if we can make sense of it. One step at a time. Best wishes.
