Talk page[edit]

Hello,

If a user didn't use the two dots (::) on my talk page to create a new line and just kept on creating new headers even if the topic is the same am I allowed to just merge it all under one header? I just don't like that I have 3 headers for the same topic. I read talk page guidelines but all it said was I could add a header if there was none already. Does anyone have an idea? HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 00:06, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes; it's your talk page. Within reason you can edit it as you please. You could use an ES like 'merge duplicate sections'. Eagleash (talk) 00:11, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 00:13, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Material to edit not visible???[edit]

On Erin Burnett's page it lists her as "currently the anchor of her own Fake news show on CNN." I wanted to edit out Fake" but when I pulled up text on edit site, the word did not appear or at least I could not find it. I would appreciate your help with this. The incorporation of this word in Wikipedia seems very odd, indeed! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:152:4400:BD55:2D81:64D7:7BFC:9AB6 (talk) 00:38, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It was reverted before you were able to get to it. JTP (talkcontribs) 00:42, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia thinks there's an "edit war" but there's not![edit]

Hello. I am trying to edit the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Wakeford on behalf of Malcolm Wakeford. I am the original author of the page and it needs to be completely updated including headings.

I have created a new login as I don't know my original password. I uploaded the new page last night and it automatically reverted to the old page. Twice.

Now I have been advised I am in an "edit war" and will be blocked from making further changes.

How do I remove the old page and replace with the new one. All entries will be referenced are checked with the subject of the biographical page.

How do I convince Wikipedia there is no "edit war"?

Thanks for your help Telegirl7 Telegirl7 (talk) 03:41, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Telegirl7: I was the editor who reverted you. Twice. You stated above that "entries will be referenced" but they were not. In fact you removed all of the existing references from the article. I suggest you prepare an improved article in your sandbox, and only move it to article space when it has a suitable standard including inline references. I am happy to help work on the better article, but please do not throw out the baby with the bath water. By the way, you should not be editing an article "on behalf of Malcolm Wakeford". That is a conflict of interest and should be avoided. Regards, WWGB (talk) 06:43, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The referencing in the current version of Malcolm Wakeford is very poor: there are many direct external links, and some references which are not cited properly. But Telegirl17's version had no references of any kind, and was quite properly reverted. Maproom (talk) 08:00, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
After a failed attempt to source Malcolm Wakeford, I have redirected to Little River Band. Sam Sailor 10:35, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Telegirl7: you should indeed read WP:COI, the guideline about conflicts of interest, as suggested above, but also and more importantly WP:PAID, which outlines a mandatory disclosure to make if you are compensated for your edits. How to use a Commons picture, when another with the same name exists locally?[edit]

I want to use the picture https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Surveillance_camera.jpg

Unfortunately, when I include it in an article, this picture shows up instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Surveillance_camera.jpg

How to do? Thanks! Syced (talk) 04:10, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Syced, per Help:Files#Uploading files, "If a file of the same name exists on both Wikipedia and Commons, the Wikipedia file will be displayed." As the Wikipedia same-named file is not used in any article, you could safely request the same to be renamed, following the procedure listed at Help:Files#Renaming files, and then obtain the correct display result. Thanks, Lourdes 08:17, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I added the template, thanks! :-) Syced (talk) 08:45, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

BIOGRAPHY[edit]

Hey there, is it possible to upload my biography on wikipedia and if possible, How? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chark M Benson (talkcontribs) 14:32, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New article in place of existing redirect[edit]

@Rwood128: asked me for assistance but I'm not sure how to proceed - hopefully you can point me in the right direction. There is an existing article, Sailortown (Belfast), and a redirect from Sailortown to it. Rwood128 created a new article, intending it to be called "Sailortown". A hatnote will serve the purpose of the old redirect. That name is already taken by the redirect, so he named it Sailortown (dockland) in the meantime. How can that article be renamed to "Sailortown", replacing the redirect?--Gronk Oz (talk) 15:40, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I wouldn't do that. The new article doesn't appear to be as notable as Sailortown (Belfast) and so there's no reason for it to take the Sailortown page (to be honest I'm not sure why the Belfast page isn't there already). Anyway, definitely the best thing to do (and one recommended by policy) is to edit Sailortown to convert it from a redirect into a disambiguation page, pointing to both the Belfast and the new article. Black Kite (talk) 16:24, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Black Kite thanks for this. Rwood128 (talk) 17:49, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Thanks for the advice, Black Kite - I have done as you suggested and changed the redirect at Sailortown to a disambiguation page. ALso pinging Rwood128, to close the loop. --Gronk Oz (talk) 00:00, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Black Kite), and Gronk Oz. Sorry to bother you again but there is now a redundant page Sailortown, Belfast that redirects to Sailortown (Belfast). This muddle was created by me, I'm sorry to say. Thanks again for the help. I did try to fix it. Rwood128 (talk) 20:49, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Comma-separated disambiguation is perfectly acceptable, according to WP:NCDAB, and from my reading of WP:Naming conventions (geographic names) it would be the more usual disambiguation, and many pages link to that title, so the redirect from that page is certainly not redundant. As a matter of idle curiosity, why did you move it to the parenthetical disambiguation? --David Biddulph (talk) 21:12, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
David Biddulph, thanks for this. This is hard to clearly explain. When I created the new article Sailortown (dockland) I had planned to call it "Sailortown". I could not do this because of the earlier article Sailortown, Belfast. I changed this to Sailortown (Belfast), hoping to solve this. Clearly I did not know enough. Various seaports, including Belfast, have, or more likely nowadays, had sailortowns. Google search for "Sailortown" goes to "Sailortown (Belfast)", because of the original title, "Sailortown, Belfast". I doubt this can be resolved. Rwood128 (talk) 21:42, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If anyone felt strongly about it they could get an admin to move Sailortown (Belfast) back to Sailortown, Belfast where it started, but it's probably not worth fussing about. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:08, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree (Gronk OzRwood128Black KiteDavid Biddulph), the Belfast Sailortown is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and should be at the base name at Sailortown, where it used to have a little stub until it was redirected to Subdivisions of Belfast in Special:Diff/383956999/395819790 in November 2010. User:Jeanne boleyn started an article in November 2011 at Sailortown, Belfast. With the new article Sailortown (dockland) a simple WP:TWODABS situation arose that did not need a DAB page. There is however a charting single on Northern Ireland based rock band Energy Orchard's eponymous 1990 debut album that deserves a DAB entry. I have therefor moved the DAB page from the base name over redirect to the parenthetical DAB page Sailortown (disambiguation), and moved Sailortown (Belfast) to the base name Sailortown without leaving a redirect; this way we get rid of the parenthetical disambiguation and are left with the more usual comma-separated disambiguation Sailortown, Belfast, that I have retargeted to the base name and categorized as a {{R from more specific geographic name}}. I hope everyone is satisfied with this solution. Sam Sailor 01:33, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
By not leaving a redirect from Sailortown (Belfast) you have left quite a number of dead ends where links had recently been set to point to Sailortown (Belfast). Special:WhatLinksHere/Sailortown (Belfast) shows (at the time of writing) 7 articles linking to that page and therefore now redlinks. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:25, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And when you see such a mistake, do join in and try to fix it, thanks. Now fixed. Sam Sailor 08:54, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gronk Oz (Sam SailorBlack KiteDavid Biddulph), I appreciate all this work and apologize for any confusion that i caused, from ignorance. All the same. Sailortown, Belfast is not the primary topic, but just one example of a "Sailortown". In hindsight it would have been better if "Sailortown, Belfast", had originally been named "Belfast's sailortown". Articles for various other seaports might be created, as Sailortown (dockland)–or a Google search–indicates. See, for example [1]. Rwood128 (talk) 12:08, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In the future Sailortown (dockland) may become the broad concept article it is and deserve the base name. Right now the first challenge is to get rid of all the direct quotes that make up most of the body text. Sam Sailor 12:15, 4 February 2018 (UTC) I am continuing this discussion on the Sailor (town) Talk page [2]. Rwood128 (talk) 12:47, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A further comment. Sailortown (dockland) is in fact the main article and the disambiguate page is now incorrect. I originally tried to call it "Sailortown" but the system blocked me. I do not, however, expect anyone to spend any more time on trying to resolve the muddle. Thanks. Rwood128 (talk) 12:17, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I hope that my recent edit to the lede of Sailortown closes this matter for now. Rwood128 (talk) 13:24, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template: Intro too long[edit]

Somewhere there is a template to put on an article whose intro is too long, unsuitable, etc. Where is it? (Also where are similar templates?) Lou Sander (talk) 16:15, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the material which you recently added to Robert M. Murphy was unsourced, and you removed material which had a reference shown. I have therefore reverted that part of the change, which would need a reference to published reliable sources to support it. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:52, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

the peoples cube[edit]

Why did you delete the page for The People's Cube? Are you now censoring content because of its political perspective? This is not only dangerous but it is unacceptable. I am going to tell everyone I know about this. Also, I work for a political candidate and I am going to make sure she mentions this in every speech she gives. Shame on you and your company. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:EBD0:B20:256F:361F:F655:7213 (talk) 17:39, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to change header and logo image?[edit]

Hello,

Our Airport changed our name back in 2015, I am able to adjust the name within the article itself but cannot modify the actual heading name. FAA made our name change official today but I am unable to find a way to correct our name in Wikipedia, it still lists it at Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport, our name has been Northern Colorado Regional Airport for 3 years now!! Also, on the summary on the side there is a logo image, I have been trying to update this image for years now to no avail. Is there a way to correct the summary box on the side?

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by BattmerS (talkcontribs) 19:38, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

For the header to change, you'll have to move the page. Do you have a correct picture uploaded on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons? And what do you want changed in the summary? LittlePuppers (talk) 19:53, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BattmerS: Your account became autoconfirmed and able to move pages when it made the tenth edit which was your latest edit to Fort Collins–Loveland Municipal Airport. Images must be uploaded before being added to articles but uploading logos can be tricky because they are usually copyrighted and require a fair use rationale. Do you have a link to the logo? PrimeHunter (talk) 21:39, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BattmerS: I've moved the page for you. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:33, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BattmerS: I've updated the image and the infobox. nagualdesign 10:22, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone fix this template[edit]

In template Template:Human timeline links in the upper right corner are so crowded they are written one on top of the other so it's hard to make out what they all are. Plus it looks amateurish. Could someone who knows what they're doing fix that? But don't make it worse, ok? Thanks. Basemetal 23:28, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing overlapping when I look at it (either the template alone or articles which transclude it). Perhaps a problem with your browser? --David Biddulph (talk) 00:16, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It wasn't my broswer but my vector.css. I like to look at things in Courier New. Dayum. Basemetal 00:46, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
