June 4[edit]

Hello[edit]

I am new to Wikipedia and I need some rules what to edit and what I cannot edit. I need someone to explain the key rules of Wikipedia. --MrSunshine83 (talk) 00:35, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MrSunshine83: Welcome to Wikipedia. You can start from this policy: WP:GUIDELINE and What Wikipedia is not. Thank you, Siddiqsazzad001 <Talk/> 00:49, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Welcome! Please read our policies linked from the guidelines. Then, you can edit anything at all anywhere in the entire encyclopedia, as long as you adhere to the policies. Exception 1: If you have a conflict of interest on an article, do not edit the article directly (SeeWP:COI). Exception 2:Some articles are on occasion temporarily locked (protected from editing) when disruptive editing has occurred. There are a few other exceptions. In a nutshell: In articles, do not add your opinion, just add facts, and cite reliable sources for those facts (See WP:RS). On discussion pages ("talk pages"): 1)be polite 2)do not modify or delete other people's comments. -Arch dude (talk) 15:16, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes[edit]

Hi, I'm trying to format my userpage and I'd like the userboxes to go above my little articles box with some space in between, but I can't seem to make it do that. Any suggestions? I tried to make the userboxes stack up on the side, but I wasn't able to make that happen. Basilosauridae (talk) 01:31, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You can write <br> in edit source to insert a blank line each time you write it. For future reference, you can read Help:Wikitext. Thinker78 (talk) 05:15, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Basilosauridae: I used {{userboxtop}} in [1] to stack them on the right side. Does that do what you want? On wide screens it places the articles box to the left of the userboxes. If you want it to always be below then you can place {{clear}} between them but it would give a lot of blank space on many screens. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:42, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can you advise how to do this?[edit]

Dear Wikipedia.

I am the author of the OASIS.MASK Wikipedia site. It is not current, the information is incorrect and, currently, I do not have the time to update.

Therefore, to avoid misleading anyone, I would like to delete until a time when I can create a new site with the latest updates.

Can you advise how to do this?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Thomas Grebinski — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tgrebinski (talkcontribs) 03:21, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As nobody other than yourself has made a substantive edit to the page, I've deleted it as an author request. If you do re-create it, be sure to add {{Connected contributor|Tgrebinski}} to the article's talkpage. ‑ Iridescent 07:03, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Avengers infinity war box office in India[edit]

Displayed Information on wik page

[181] In India, Infinity War became the first Hollywood film to earn over ₹2 billion ($29.7 million),

But real truth is, above mentioned are nett figures after tax deduction and not gross figures. Gross figure is around 44 million dollars. So please correct it. before this it was jungle book with 39 million dollars. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.201.54.22 (talk) 06:53, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The inline source immediately after the number in Avengers: Infinity War#Other territories is:
  • Bhowal, Tiasa (May 10, 2018). "Avengers: Infinity War Box Office Collection Day 12 – First Hollywood Film To Make Over 200 Crore In India". NDTV. Archived from the original on May 14, 2018. Retrieved May 14, 2018.
The source says: "Total: Rs. 200.39 cr NettBOC. India biz... GrossBOC: Rs. 256.91 cr" (cr is crore = 10 million). I have added "nett" to the statement [2] but a new source about the gross record would probably be better. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:17, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2 radio stations rebranded[edit]

Hi, Apologies if this is confusing I've tried to word it as simple as possible,

Today the UK radio station "Key 103 FM" was rebranded as "Hits Radio" however the other radio station "The Hits Radio" also rebranded as "Hits Radio" (same rebrand, same company),

The "Key 103 FM" article has been moved to Hits Radio and updated however "The Hits Radio" hasn't been moved or updated

So my questions are:

Should the "Key 103" article be written in past tense (and be moved back to Key 103) and should "The Hits Radio" article be moved to "Hits Radio" and updated?,

OR

Should "The Hits Radio" be written in past tense and the Key 103 FM/Hits Radio be left as is?

All sources say "Key 103 became Hits Radio today" but there's no sources of The Hits Radio becoming Hits Radio, From the tweets I've read it seems "The Hits Radio" is defunct and "Key 103 FM" is now "Hits Radio" but as I'm rather confused by it all I'd rather get opinions first to see what others think,

Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 13:55, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input[edit]

the particular article i am trying to prevent from deletion is Danger Zone (Rapper). I have multiple valid sources that prove that the article is not intended to promote a brand or product. I am simply trying to give credit to an artist I interviewed many months ago. You probably assume that the article was intended to promote a brand or product or brand but that is far from my intention. My intention is to give credit to the newfound success that has been found by the rap artist who goes by the name of danger zone. I posted the clip from the episode of Skam austin he is in. I did an interview with Danger Zone In april of this year hint the reason i have so much knowledge about him. Hopefully this will be enough reason for the page not to be deleted. my account name falls under the same name of danger zone because i am a huge danger zone fan and i admire his story. I was simply trying to give credit where credit is due — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dangerzone2014 (talkcontribs) 15:09, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

An interview with the subject does nothing to establish his notability in Wikipedia's terms. What are needed are references to significant coverage in multiple published reliable sources independent of the subject. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:11, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrighted Content[edit]

Hi-

I trust my message finds you well.

I am from the Marketing team of VXI and we are trying to put an entry about VXI in Wikipedia but got a message, saying:

Wikipedia:Copyright violations|copyrighted content]], which is not permitted on Wikipedia.

{{divbox|gray|3=This submission appears to be taken from http://vxi.com/about-us/our-story/. Wikipedia cannot accept material copied from elsewhere, unless it explicitly and verifiably has been released to the world under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license or into the public domain and is written in an acceptable tonethis includes material that you own the copyright to.

We authored the content in our website and want to use the same in our entry in Wikipedia, if possible.

We seek your guidance on the next best steps we need to make to be allowed/approved to put the entry in Wikipedia.

Thank you in advance.

Warm Regards,

Debbie Alfonso — Preceding unsigned comment added by 111.125.117.150 (talk) 15:12, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be quite a few "VXI" going around, including VME eXtensions for Instrumentation to which the page VXI currently redirects, but that one is likely VXI Global Holdings, a Filipino company.
The copyright issue is something that can be fixed, but to be frank, there is a much bigger and potentially unfixable problem: from a cursory web search, I do not think that company is "notable" (i.e. has been talked about at length by reliable sources independent of itself). If so, no Wikipedia article should be written about it; if you try, the article will simply be deleted.
Let's assume however that you can muster sources that show notability (they need not be in English, but they need to be reliable newspapers or the like). You will have two options regarding the text:
  1. If the content of your website is suitable (check in particular our policy WP:PROMO), you could release it under a free license. Take care that (1) this is not a reversible move and (2) anyone, anywhere will be able to use that text with few restrictions, you cannot release it "only for Wikipedia"; you might want to have someone from the legal department sign up on this. See how to donate copyrighted materials for details; this would be relatively simple here, just change the "Copyright © 2018 VXI Global Solutions, LLC, LLC. All Rights Reserved" on the footer of the page to something indicating a free license.
  2. If the content is not suitable (too promotional) or you do not wish to release under a free license, you have to rewrite it using your own words.

Hello, Debbie Alfonso. I'm afraid that you are under the very common misapprehension that Wikipedia's article about your company is in any way at all under the control of your company. It is not, and the only role you should take in respect of that article should be to suggest changes, preferably with citations to sources unconnected with the company. The decision as to exactly what goes into the article should be made by a consensus of editors unconnected with the company. --ColinFine (talk) 17:08, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest[edit]

I'm new here and want to make sure I'm following all the rules. How do I disclose conflicts of interest where I might request (neutral) corrections or updates on behalf of a client? D'Nezzy Smith (talk) 17:27, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you raise the issue on a talk page of the related articles and mention that you cant make the edit yourself due to a conflict of interest then other users can view and assess if the addition/change is valid. MilborneOne (talk) 17:29, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh reliable sources will help rather than "the company says it is wrong". MilborneOne (talk) 17:30, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • First, thanks for asking instead of just editing: we appreciate it. Next: you said "client". That almost certainly makes you a "paid editor", which means you must disclose your status as such to adhere to our terms of service: see WP:PAID. (In a nutshell: fully disclose on your user page and briefly mention on talk pages.) Paid or not, you also have a "conflict of interest" with respect to alrticles affecting your client. "COI" is not derogatory, it's just a fact. Please see WP:COI. Don't edit articles to which this applies. Instead, edit the aritcle's talk page and another editor will (we hope) step in. If something is seriously wrong and you are not getting results that way, please come back here and we can tell you how to proceed. -Arch dude (talk) 18:46, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I forgot to mention BLP. If the article in question is about a person or contains information about a person, and if there are any biographical errors, we want to aggressively correct them. See WP:BLP -Arch dude (talk) 18:51, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

encodeing[edit]

I am exhausted trying to read your website with all the encoding that takes place on not only your site but others like yours. It is not necessary to use this. Many people like myself would like to be able to understand the written word without having to do the equivalent of a crossword puzzle prior to reading the article. Life has enough challenges without having to figure out what a cake has to do with the word thought for instance. Letters were put together for a reason . To help us better communicate with one another Next I guess we will all live in caves and use grunting sounds to communicate with one another . Please do stop the encrypting for the benefit of all those young and old to learn effectively. Betty Gainey — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.91.187.88 (talk) 17:37, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm exhausted trying to figure out your point. Can you illustrate with an example?--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:17, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I, too, am completely baffled by this question. Was it intended for some other website, or has Betty Gainey's browser been infected with some virus that encodes each page? Dbfirs 20:57, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Could you describe what it looks like in further detail? Whatever you are referring to, it could be a problem with your browser.💸Money💸emoji💸💴 21:01, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Signature problem[edit]

Hi all, I made a custom signature that I like, but is too long to go in the box provided in my preferences. Is there anything I can do besides copy and paste it each time, like I am doing for this question? Thanks! Basilosauridae❯❯❯talk19:46, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The box is that size in order to enforce WP:SIGLENGTH. So, if it doesn’t fit, you shouldn’t be using it. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:00, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Could you help please[edit]

I just made an edit in Tarini Desai page. I have just joined wiki and hence it may be possible to have made some mistake. But have been writing about Indian writers in the Indian press.I made the contribution as Desai is particularly known for her unique style which i mentioned on the page. But it was removed by Mr Iggy the Swan. Could you please guide me what went wrong? Or do I have to write it differently? Thank you.Socialwriters (talk) 19:48, 4 June 2018 (UTC)Socialwriters[reply]

  • Hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia. My guess is that Iggy the Swan removed it because it is not referenced: all statements fo fact must be referenced. Your own expertise is insufficient because our peculiar method of building an encyclopedia explicitly rejects the concept that we confirm the expertise of our editors. Please see WP:RS. However, you may choose to ask directly on the editor's talk page. On a completely separate topic, your username is inappropriate, because it implies (being plural) that it is intended to be shared by more than one editor: this may have triggered Iggy's reaction. See WP:USERNAME -Arch dude (talk) 20:10, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Add language to Iso2language template[edit]

I noticed that Lingua Franca Nova is missing in Iso2language template. How to add? --151.95.62.85 (talk) 21:00, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest that you don't. {{Iso2language}} depends on a plethora of other simple templates that are a pain to maintain. A relatively recent update to {{lang}} created Module:Lang which has a function name_from_code(). That function returns a language name from one of a handful of data sets taken directly from IANA and the ISO 639 custodians. These data sets are more-or-less regularly updated which is much easier than updating several thousand individual templates. I wrote name_from_code() expressly for the purpose of reducing the need for the multitude of individual templates. I just haven't yet got round to updating {{Iso2language}}. I'll get to that soon.

Interlanguage links at the bottom of articles[edit]

Every once in a while I will notice an interlanguage link at the bottom of an article, like the latest edit to Museu da Tabanka. I cannot figure out what purpose they serve because they don't even show up in my browser. Is this something that should be left in or removed? I have even seen them on disambiguation pages. Leschnei (talk) 21:09, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Leschnei: They should appear on the left-hand sidebar (under the Wikipedia puzzle globe logo, not the article itself), at the bottom, on most browsers and skins. If you still don't see them, what skin are you using? MarginalCost (talk) 21:30, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In general these links aren't required locally, as they are provided through Wikidata. Local links are required only when the Wikidata constraint of only one-to-one mapping causes problems when the breakdown of article scope differs between languages. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:44, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @MarginalCost: I'm good with the language links in the sidebar. The one's I'm talking about are at the bottom of the article itself. Leschnei (talk) 22:03, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@David Biddulph: I see that you have reverted the edit to Museu da Tabanka. How do you tell if the local link is needed or not? Thanks, Leschnei (talk) 22:03, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You can click on the "Wikidata item" option under "Tools" on the left-hand toolbar, or you can get directly to the relevant part of the Wikidata by using the "Edit links" option below the list of language links at the foot of the left-hand toolbar. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:07, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Content being removed[edit]

Hello!

I have been trying to add information to a page that has bare bones material and I keep getting my content erased because it “violates the guidelines” but I don’t use biased speed and proper use citations.

Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.44.29.140 (talk) 22:25, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is the only edit by your IP address so we cannot examine your case. We have five million articles. It's very common to have edits reverted. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:31, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
