Installing SemanticMediaWiki[edit]

Hi, I tried installing semanticmediawiki but i am getting the following errors. Could someone help

Sorry, IP user, this is way outside the scope for the page, which is about editing Wikipedia. Please look at meta:Help and go from there. --ColinFine (talk) 09:44, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Creating article[edit]

I am trying to create an article in my sandbox (User:Wordcobbler/sndbox/Joseph Harriss) and I would like to do it progressively, i.e., write some text today and come back tomorrow to write some more. Question: how do I save my text? All I see is "Publish changes," but I am not ready to publish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wordcobbler (talkcontribs) 15:25, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The best way is the click the "Publish changes". It won't be indexed by search engines, so you can save it without causing any damage for now. We don't mind incomplete articles incubating in userspace. Abelmoschus Esculentus (talkcontribs) 15:27, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Wordcobbler: The "publish changes" button is horribly miss-named. It used to be called "save." Any reasonable person would think that a button named "publish" would put the article into Wikipedia main space, but that's not what it does. All it does is save your edit into whatever article you are currently editing: in this case your sandbox. The reason for this unfortunate button name is legal: your sandbox is visible to any editor who knows how to find it (not via a search engine) so you have "published" it in the sense of copyright law, and you have licensed its contents with the CC-BY-SA license. The WMF lawyers made us change the button name. -Arch dude (talk) 16:04, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification regarding the significant third-party coverage required by GNG and WP:NCORP[edit]

I would like some clarification regarding the significant third-party coverage that NCORP and GNG require. I was under the impression that articles that say "yes company is running" or reads like a press release wouldn't count as significant third-party coverage.--Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 17:11, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your interpretation, Tyw7. By the way, the way Wikipedia works, a specific answer to a specific question is worth a hundred general questions. I presume this is about WP:Articles for deletion/Venus Airlines? I haven't checked the sources, but on the face of it your argument is right: substantial independent sources are required, and what (or how many) aircraft an airline has, doesn't enter into the question. It is up to MilborneOne to find the substantial independent references, if they want the article kept. Note that there is no point in you carrying on arguing there: AFD discussions are not votes, they are opportunities to present the arguments for and against. The admin who closes the discussion will look at the arguments raised, not at who has "won" an argument. --ColinFine (talk) 19:03, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
ColinFine, yeah kinda. I just wanted to see if I might be interpreting it incorrectly. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 19:51, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Tax deductible?[edit]

Dear W,

I would like to know if Wikipedia is a 501C3 effort? If 'Yes' I would appreciate a receipt for my $150.00 contribution several weeks ago. If not, I will still support Wikipedia as it has so much great information and has very little bias. I really enjoy your site. Thank you, Charles VanderLaan
Yes, according to this page: https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tax_Deductibility/en. If you didn't get a receipt, you can try asking via donate@wikimedia.org RudolfRed (talk) 19:58, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Editing an Infobox re population: Altadena, California[edit]

In updating population information for the article Altadena, California, I find that the output (see below) of my edit includes "• Estimate (2016) N/A" (bolding added). This is seemingly produced by the software automatically. Rather than have a blank field, I took the initiative and used the population_note field to input:[population_note] "'2016 estimate: 45,001". It wasn't an elegant approach (see "OUTPUT" below); how do editors handle that 'previous year field", normally?

I. INPUT:

| population_footnotes [1]
| population_total 45,236
| population_as_of 2017
| population_density_sq_mi NaN
| population_note 2016 estimate: 45,001

II. OUTPUT:

Population (2017)[3]
• Total	45,236
• Estimate (2016) N/A

2019 Sun Belt conference football references[edit]

Can you fix the reference I made in the category please. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 21:42, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I fixed the title in the citation so that it's no longer throwing an error. Is that what you wanted (I'm not sure what you mean by "in the category").--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:52, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ivan Poddubny[edit]

Good morning/afternoon. I have edited a Wikipedia page on an ethnic Ukrainian athlete called Ivan Poddubny(according to Russian spelling). The man is Ukrainian, and was in fact persecuted by the Soviet regime for writing his name in Ukrainian instead of Russian. The correct spelling must be " Ivan Piddubnyj". I have received a message that said that they have reverted my edit. Please correct the name of our heroe, he was a Ukrainian, not a Russian. Thank you very much! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.158.177.66 (talkcontribs) 2019-01-25T23:04:55 (UTC)

Hello, IP user. As far as I can see, most or all the sources referenced call him Poddubny/Поддубный, so by the COMMONNAME policy, that is what the article is called. There is a redirect from Ivan Piddubny. Note that righting great wrongs is not among the purposes of Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 23:44, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There were at least 2 problems with your edit. You did not give an edit summary to explain the reason for your change, and you broke the transclusion of the image into the article (as you were trying to call up a file name which doesn't exist). Wikipedia's convention is to use the name by which the subject is most commonly called in English sources, so it would help if you were able to point to sources to support your change. If there is a dispute regarding the name used, the place to discuss it is on the article's talk page. --David Biddulph (talk) 23:49, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have just failed when trying to add this commons file - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:In_1921,_Frances_Martineau_Lupton_owned_the_family_mills_and_textile_manufacturing_firm_William_Lupton_and_Sons_-_Est._in_1773_in_Leeds_and_later_Pudsey_(top_crop).jpg - in the "Frank Lupton" section on this page. the file should be under the file of Frank Lupton but it has not worked. please help. Thanks 175.32.165.144 (talk) 23:57, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your edit (which you could have done yourself). If you read Help:Pictures it tells you how to include an image in an article. --David Biddulph (talk) 00:02, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
