January 4[edit]

Please help - ref number 106 should have the title of the book in italics which I cannot do. please leave in quote. Kind regards. 175.33.45.21 (talk) 00:38, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the "cite web" template for "cite book", which still allows to add a URL if the book is online. –FlyingAce✈hello 01:21, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I remain amazed how this editor appears to have been officially enshrined as The Only Person Excused From Ever Having To Learn Anything About Editing. Four topics about simple typos, in the last three days. If they are unable to learn something simple when it has been spoon-fed to them two dozen times, how are they even managing to post here?? --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 16:28, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Copy/merge which will take some time to complete[edit]

After earlier discussion, and some more recent attempts to start a discussion on how best to reduce the size of Syrian Civil War, I have started the process of moving all relevant extra info, not already contained in the Timeline section of that article to Timeline of the Syrian Civil War. I haven't done one of the Copied templates before and not sure how to express that this is just the start of a process, which will be complete when the whole section is finished. If anyone can advise here or edit the Talk or other pages over there to improve my annotations, I'd appreciate it. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:41, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry this reply is later than you might expect Laterthanyouthink, but we have templates designed for this purpose, to place temporarily at the head of an article: {{Under construction}} for work that may take several days, or {{In use}} for a few hours. More elaborate communications about your editing may be placed on the article's talk page, for the benefit of anyone watching it: Bhunacat10 (talk), 22:17, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks very much, : Bhunacat10. Better late than never! That Under Construction one looks perfect. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 23:05, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category![edit]

Can user make their own Category? Ex. Category:SiddiqUser subpages. Need expert opinion. Because my target is locked. Siddiqsazzad001 <Talk/> 05:59, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you want your subpages, you can see the same via Special:PrefixIndex/User:Siddiqsazzad001/. There's no need to create such a category. Thanks, Lourdes 08:04, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My edited content isn't showing[edit]

Hi,

I added 7-8 lines of well written content yesterday along with the source reference for this page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pune) Why is it not showing up? I don't even have an email regarding this. Please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MVSujata (talkcontribs) 06:22, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@MVSujata: If you look at the history of the Pune article, you will see that your 2 edits were reverted; you can see that the reverting users were David Biddulph and Jonathansammy. The first revert (before you added a ref) had the edit summary, "rv unsourced"; the second revert had the edit summary, "mostly unsourced. The other content also not from a reliable source." —teb728 t c 06:48, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. Let me get a better source. The reason I'd like to add this portion to the Pune article as 'Peths' are one of the most important points that an article on Pune should cover. Let me give it another try. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MVSujata (talkcontribs) 07:55, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jonathansammy could you please confirm if this source can be considered as valid for this edit - https://siliconcitypune.com/city-of-peths-pune/ Based on your confirmation, I will give it another try for enhancing this article.

Hi Jonathansammy the previous source used by me that you rejected is already part of the Pune page as a source for another content. Please check punediary in the sources listed for many other content. David Biddulph I am re-adding mine with this source and a new source silliconcitypune.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by MVSujata (talkcontribs) 09:31, 4 January 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by MVSujata (talkcontribs) 2019-01-04T09:31:34 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MVSujata. Now that you have had it explained what happened, you should continue the discussion at Talk:Pune, rather than here. Generally it is a bad idea to reapply a reverted edit without discussing it first - if you are adding a new source, it is not technically edit warring, but it's usually still best to discuss it.
Just because a source is already cited in an article does not mean that anybody has necessarily looked at it critically and decided that it is acceptable. "Other stuff exists" is not a good basis for adding new material (this is usually invoked in respect of whole articles, but the same principle applies). Perhaps somebody should be replacing those existing citations with better sources.
Finally, please sign you postings on talk and discussion pages, with four tildes (~~~~). --ColinFine (talk) 12:06, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response @ColinFine. Got the point. About discussion on talk- I am not sure how to proceed on it hence chatting here. About the article and source - unfortunately for this information there isn't a lot of written information available as these are historic and not very well documented. The sources that I have mentioned has been created by people who 'know' through some or the other literature (hard copies) or other sources. So while I have spent hours to search for another best source I do not have it. So either we can decide to delete the information or keep it as I am very confident it is correct. I will let you take the final call here. But this is a good info to add in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MVSujata (talkcontribs) 12:13, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sources don't have to be online, MVSujata. As long as they have been published by a reliable publisher, so that a reader could in principle get hold of them (eg through a major library), that is enough. Please see REFB.. --ColinFine (talk) 15:39, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can you create the 2019 Sun Belt Conference football category and fix it from red to blue for me please. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 16:56, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please follow the guidance of the other editors who are rejecting your drafts because the various 2019 football conference articles you are trying to create are WP:TOOSOON. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 20:13, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_paper

Hello, I need to update the url above. However, the edit tab is missing. Only the read and edit source tabs are available. What do I need to do to see the edit tab? Many thanks

Firesea (talk) 17:33, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Firesea: 'Edit source' is the tab you want. 'Edit' refers to the visual editor, which you can enable via your preferences, but I don't wholly recommend it for newer contributors. Some useful links have been left at your talk page. You say you 'need' to update the the page. If this is a subject you have a connection with, please read WP:COI and WP:PAID and make the necessary declarations. This is not a reflection upon you, just one of the ways in which Wikipedia attempts to ensure neutrality. Eagleash (talk) 17:44, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

how to create page[edit]

Can you instruct me on how to create a page for one of my recording artists Duncan Morley who has tons of creditable sources ćor citation, such as 3 times on the billboard charts, and just hit top 10 with famous rapper rick ross. I wanted to make a wikipedia page for him but Im slightly confused by the sandbox section.
