Can’t get out of lists[edit]

I do not know how to get into a list I’ve created and now that I’m in one, can’t return to home screen.

I do use Wikis a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:243:604:8C80:B415:F862:8921:616D (talk) 00:27, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you rephrase your question, maybe give us some idea of what you are seeing, or maybe a URL of the page to which you are referring? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:26, 30 January 2020 (UTC)here is an example:[reply]

- I saved Duns SCOTUS to a list titled Medieval. - once in that list, I cannot get out of the list to get back to main query page to do a search. - 2nd question: from main query page how do I most directly access my lists?

Does this make sense? I do appreciate the help! -— Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:243:604:8c80:ac54:4598:70f:56a (talk)

Are you using an app other than a normal mobile browser to read Wikipedia? I haven't tried such apps but some of them have a reading list feature mentioned at mw:Wikimedia Apps/iOS FAQ#Saved Pages and Reading lists. I don't know how it works. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:22, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User sent me libel threat[edit]

I removed Cyrusep's edit's on the 2020 Democratic Party presidential debates article twice; first here: [1] then here: [2]. Minutes after my second edit, I received this email from them:

(Redacted)

I'm pretty sure legal threats aren't allowed, but I'm not too familiar with Wikipedia policy in that area.

Thanks for your assistance with this matter.David O. Johnson (talk) 04:04, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@David O. Johnson:Legal threats are not allowed on Wikipedia: See WP:LEGAL. The e-mail you received is not on Wikipedia. There may or may not be other issues in this dispute. I'll take a look. -Arch dude (talk) 04:29, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@David O. Johnson: Make sure you do not reply to the email. Say nothing at all. It is obvious nonsense but feeding such things is never helpful. Thank you for reverting the user's broken edit ([3]) at 2020 Democratic Party presidential debates. Johnuniq (talk) 04:35, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@David O. Johnson: I agree with Johnuniq, but also take this to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and ask them if this constitutes a legal threat as we define it. It seems to me to fall in the class of threats that might have a chilling effect as described in WP:LEGAL. Your only action was to remove obvious linkspam. -Arch dude (talk) 04:40, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I will post there as well. I appreciate your help. David O. Johnson (talk) 04:42, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It has been resolved. David O. Johnson (talk) 05:43, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Find articles that aren't in any subcategory or subcategory of a subcategory or subcategory of... a category[edit]

I have been making Wikidata items for stuff in Category:Articles without Wikidata item lately. However, what feels like almost all of the articles in it are people, especially athletes (with questionable significance to the robot takeover Wikidata is designed to assist :D). People are relatively boring to make items for; there are many, many things that are the same for all of them.

However, there are definitely at least some articles not about people that don't have Wikidata items. How can I find these? I can't search for stuff that is in this category but not in Category:People—no articles should just be in that top category; however, every person should be in a subcategory of it, or a subcategory of a subcategory of it, and so on. Is there a way to find with search articles that are in a any subcategory of an article or in a subcategory of any subcategory of its subcategories? /* MFIs go for NBFC licences */[edit]

Hi Wikipedia,

I have many references regarding NBFC License. I want to citation on Wikipedia. Can you explain about procedure of citation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Corpbiz (talkcontribs) 06:43, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you can clarify your question, we can provide a better answer. Do you wish to add useful references to the Non-bank financial institution article, or do you wish to create an article about a new corporation? If the latter, then the corporation must be notable by our definition (see WP:NCORP), or the article will be immediately deleted. But first, it appears that your username may not be acceptable as it appears to be a name for a group, not an individual: see WP:USERNAME. If you are associated with a company, you cannot create or edit an article about the company, and you must declare your association: see WP:PAID. -Arch dude (talk) 07:29, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding WikiLinks (Article, Talk Pages, User Pages etc)[edit]

Hello Wiki Community, This is probably my first question here as I couldn't find any help in any Wikipedia article. I want to ask about adding WikiLinks in articles, talk pages and user pages. I know that putting two square brackets make a link opening to an existing Wikipedia article like this: Link Text but somewhere in a certain talk page I saw the link with a colon like this: :Link Text. I don't know where to use what kind of formatting! I'm now confused about where to use what. However I know linking an existing article on another article is done using Link Text but not on talk page. Also, if I want to use a link on my user page, how should I do it? Link Text or :Link Text? Please help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by The Ultimate (talkcontribs) 09:11, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Ultimate, the colon is used when linking to either:
 • Another language wikipedia, as in de:Hauptseite (:de:Hauptseite). A normal link will create an interlanguage link (those links in the left column), although this now obsolete as Wikidata handles these.
 • An image, where a link is intended rather than a display of the image, as in File:Japanese Squirrel edited version.jpg (:File:Japanese Squirrel edited version.jpg) ~~ OxonAlex - talk 09:18, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you OxonAlex for your time and informative answer. It really helped! The UltimateTalk 09:42, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Ultimate, you also need a colon if you want wikilink a category like Category:Foods anywhere else than in the category section at the bottom of a page. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:36, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To put it in a nutshell, the colon doesn't do anything in a normal wikilink, but in special links such as images, categories or interwiki links, the colon means to only put a link to the target, not to act on the target itself. JIP | Talk 11:09, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Some templates for talk pages always add a colon to ensure that a link works regardless of the namespace, e.g. notifications that a page has been nominated for speedy deletion. They could have tested the namespace and made the colon optional but that's an unnecessary complication. When you write a link manually, only include a colon when needed. A colon when an article links another article may confuse some editors and tools. However, you do need a colon when an article transcludes another article with . Otherwise Article name would try to transclude Template:Article name. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:27, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

my name is Nivia Zumpano. I am a musicist (harpsichordist) and researcher about music in Brazil. We have a website specialized in Brazilian online sheet music for free download (some are selled but most are available for free)- MUSICA BRASILIS - http://musicabrasilis.org.br (Portuguese) OR http://musicabrasilis.com (English). On this website there are biographies, scores and other contents about Brazilian Classical Music. I think it is very important include this information on the Wiki "List of online music databases", helping the users interested in Brazilian scores around the world. Please, how could I include Musica Brasilis website in that list? Thank you for your help. Best, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nivia Zumpano (talkcontribs) 13:45, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nivia Zumpano, Please read WP:SOAPBOX very carefully. Alongside that, read WP:PAID (This is important, not complying with WP:PAID is a Terms of Use violation). moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 13:48, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Nivia Zumpano: List of online music databases is a list of those databases that have articles in Wikipedia. If a database is notable enough by our definition, then it should have a Wikipedia article, and then it can be included in the list. You are not allowed to directly create such an article since you are a paid editor, but you can submit a draft article. It is extremely difficult for an editor such as yourself who has a WP:COI to create a suitably neutral article draft. Do not even attempt to create the draft until you can find sufficient appropriate sources (WP:RS) to meet our notability requirements for an organization (WP:NCORP), or your hard work will be in vain. If you can find sufficient such sources, then come back here and ask about the next steps. I know this all sounds very negative, but it's not, really. If the organization is notable, then we do want that article.-Arch dude (talk) 16:39, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

need info on quote tags[edit]

Hi everyone. where oh where is the article that describes tags to be used for indicating QUOTATIONS? I'm searching through pages and pages of help topics and essays, and not finding any data. I already know about <blockquote> . where is that tag documented? and also are there any others? Please advise. I appreciate any help. thanks!! Please ping me when you reply. thanks!!! --Sm8900 (talk) 14:55, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Sm8900: The basic template for block quotations is Quote. The documentation for that template also includes some information about the use of <blockquote>, and other relevant templates are listed in the navbox at the bottom. Deor (talk) 15:08, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Sm8900, the MOS:QUOTE recommends either using Quote or blockquote tags for quotations longer than about 40 words. There doesn't seem to be a set template for those below this.
All the templates can be found in the Template:Quotation templates navbox. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 15:09, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate content.[edit]

The article stub about me states "he is of Jewish descent." I consider this to be an invasion of privacy. Wikipedia has no business commenting on the race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation of living subjects without their approval. As your carelessness in this regard may place certain subjects in danger, I do intend to make an issue of it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.163.105.246 (talk) 17:01, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tony Holkham, Alright, good to know. moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 17:58, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To reiterate: we care a lot about biographical material (see WP:BLP), but if a statement about you is verifiable by reference to a reliable source (WP:RS), then you have no say in whether or not that statement is included in an article about you. If you have an article in Wikipedia, you are notable and are not a private person. If such a statement is false and is contradicted by another reliable source then an editor can choose to add the second source and note the contradiction. As a completely separate issue, please do no make statements anywhere on Wikipedia that may be construed as legal threats: see WP:LEGAL. -Arch dude (talk) 21:11, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
On further consideration, I looked at the article. Professor Kapstein does not appear to meet our notability criteria after all, so I proposed that the article be deleted. -Arch dude (talk) 21:23, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question re coding for: "noeditsection," and codes in general[edit]

hi. Okay. I know that the code __NOEDITSECTION__ will remove all edit links within each section on a page. This information is clearly provided at the help page section Help:Section#Section_editing. My question is, is there any code which does the exact opposite? i.e., do we have any code called e.g., __EDITSECTION__, which would reactivate the "edit" link for each individual section?

Additionally, how does one edit code in the first place, anyhow? I'm not fully technically proficient. I do know how to edit nav boxes, templates, user boxes, etc etc. can anyone please enlighten me, as to how to edit or modify codes here? I appreciate any help. please ping me, in any reply. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 16:58, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sm8900, these are what is known as magic words. A full list can be found on Mediawiki at mw:Help:Magic words. It doesn't seem that it is possible for edit links to be hid on one section, only every section of a page.
Not sure on the answer to the second half. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 17:45, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Sm8900: You have to omit __NOEDITSECTION__ if you want section edit links. If __NOEDITSECTION__ is coming from a transcluded page then it can be placed in <noinclude>...</noinclude> there. There are different types of codes, e.g. wikitext, templates and modules. What do you have in mind? If you are referring to changing MediaWiki itself to introduce new commands like an override __EDITSECTION__ then MediaWiki is written in PHP. See Wikipedia:Bug reports and feature requests. Volunteer programmers with PHP skills can submit suggested changes for review. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:43, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: thanks so much!! well yes, I think it is coming from a transcluded template. the main place that I want to restore things is at Portal: History. the thing is, I m not actually sure that the code __NOEDITSECTION__ is the actual reason that no edit links for sections are showing up, or whether there simply aren't any section breaks there in the first place. you can feel free to go there and look around, if you want. I really appreciate your help. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 14:14, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Sm8900: Portal: History does have section headings. You can see them by previewing the page with __TOC__ at the top. The TOC is disabled with transcluded __NOTOC__ which can be overridden. But if you click the "Edit" tab at top then you can see the section headings are either transcluded or only display transclusions below them. This is normal for portal pages, and section editing is deliberately disabled in them. Instead many of the sections use wikitext to add an "edit" link aimed at a page the section transcludes. Usually this page does not contain the section heading. Special:ExpandTemplates shows the page currently transcludes 14 different __NOEDITSECTION__. Don't try to remove them. If you did then some of the sections still wouldn't have edit links because the heading is generated in a special way, and if they do have edit links then it often wouldn't go to the page with the displayed content. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:09, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: thanks! okay, that is extremely helpful. ok, so just to clarify, what is the wiki text that I can use to add an "edit" link aimed at a page the section transcludes? sorry for this basic question.
also, here is a separate but related question. how do I disable automated archiving for individual sections on a talk page? I'm pretty sure I saw that feature somewhere. I'm looking on Help:Archiving a talk page, and Help:Section, but so far I don't seem to see those codes. I really appreciate your articulate knowledgable and mutli-facteted technical knowledge and assistance. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 15:31, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: hi. hey, just realized, there are small edit links in the boxed sections on that page. I don't know if they were there all along, or if it is due to something that I did. anyway, thanks!!
but anyway, regardless, what was the wiki text that you referred to above? i.e., to to add an "edit" link aimed at a page the section transcludes? thanks.
okay, and sorry, re my other question, is there any way to disable automatic archiving for individual talk page sections? thanks for all your help. --Sm8900 (talk) 15:36, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Sm8900: I suggested __TOC__ as a preview test, not to be saved. The edit links aren't made with a special command but with a url similar to the one you get by clicking a normal edit link. For example, Special:ExpandTemplates shows that Portal:History#Things you can do has the code <span style="color:black">edit</span> to produce edit. The code is made in the call of Box-header which uses Module:Box-header. The module is written in Lua and uses fullurl. In wikitext you can for example say [ edit] to produce edit (I omitted color code). This is preferred over writing the url directly in the source. See fullurl at mw:Help:Magic words#URL data. The edit link works on any page. It's not technically related to transclusion but usually used together with transclusion. Note that if you transclude a normally made section heading (the actual heading and not just the section content) and don't have __NOEDITSECTION__ then MediaWiki automatically makes a section edit link going to the page the section heading is transcluded from. See for example Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2020 January 31. See Do not archive until. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:34, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good at first glance. I wouldn't use the website parameter to point to the archive website; if anything it could point to the original website, but you've used publisher, and cite web says that you shouldn't normally need both. You could, if you wished, include the author's name |last=Crowder |first=Jeff. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:58, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Leela52452: The |title= is used twice – remove the second one. |publisher=Adequacy.net should be changed to |website=Adequacy.net and the |website=web.archive.org should be removed (|publisher= is not used unless needed to help disambiguate a common, or identify an uncommon, |work= value). Definitely add author and date if available – they are key identifiers to help finding a source. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:10, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Using cite web with no author no date[edit]

I am trying to use Harvard citation to cite a source from a web page article. The article specifies no author and no date. Inline between the ref and /ref I have specified

> harvnb
> title=Oise-Aisne American Cemetery
> n.d.

Later in my reflist I use cite web with the following parameters:

> url=https://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries-memorials/europe/oise-aisne-american-cemetery
> title=Oise-Aisne American Cemetery
> date=n.d.
> website=American Battle Monuments Commission
> author=<--Not stated--> (with an exclamation point after the less than symbol)
> access-date=23 August 2019
> ref=harv

When I preview the article the footnote is displayed as:

> 207. ^n.d.

Other attempts to cite the reference render either the same footnote or a citation error. I have been unable to find examples of cite web with no author and no date in the documentation. Any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jpmarciano (talkcontribs) 17:55, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jpmarciano: I would use "ABMC" or "American Battle Monuments Commission" as the author in this case. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:16, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jpmarciano, citing URL with no author needs to be like this: . Sm8900, given there appears to have been some mention on the talk page, the documentation is at Template:WPBannerMeta#Task forces. As Template:WikiProject History is template protected, you will need to put all the details of your new task force, in the correct format, into an edit request on Template talk:WikiProject History - use Edit template-protected to do the request. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 20:18, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How do I get/create my own Wikipedia page... Is there a form to fill out, & how much does it cost? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GrapplersEdge (talkcontribs) 21:08, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GrapplersEdge Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that has articles, not mere "pages". This is a subtle but important distinction and might be shaping some misconceptions that you have. As an encyclopedia, autobiographical articles are strongly discouraged, please read the autobiography policy. Wikipedia is not a place where anyone and everyone can have "a page" like social media(and Wikipedia does not charge editors to create an article). Wikipedia has articles about subjects that receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources and that meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability. Wikipedia isn't interested in what someone wants to say about themselves.
Also note that a Wikipedia article about you is not necessarily desirable. There are good reasons to not want one. You cannot lock an article about you to the text that you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Any information about you, good and bad, can be in an article about you as long as it appears in an independent reliable source. 331dot (talk) 21:14, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you have reviewed the notability criteria(there are also criteria for certain fields like politicians and musicians), and truly feel that you merit an article, it would be best if you simply allowed independent editors to take note of your career and write about you. 331dot (talk) 21:16, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
