January 31[edit]

Reaction to Iran crisis in the US, termination of professor Asheen Phansey[edit]

I'm a new editor, and I am actually really excited to get started.

I noticed Wikipedia has a page for the escalation of the conflict in Iran, "2019–20 Persian Gulf crisis". One fascinating component of this crisis was the domestic reaction to Trump's statements in the US. A professor at Babson college was fired for making a satirical post suggesting that the Supreme Leader of Iran target 52 U.S. cultural sites.

Where would I upload this information to Wikipedia though? The actual page for the "2019–20 Persian Gulf crisis" seems primarily concerned with geopolitical actors and not the domestic politics of the US, so I am not sure that it would be a fitting page for this discussion. I don't want to appear "US centric." Can anyone provide with some guidance about editorial best practices? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caratacus54AD (talkcontribs) 01:16, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

in the broader perspective, the only article to which that incident might pertain would be a biography of the terminated professor. I know it's tempting, because his modest proposal was deliberately inane, but, leave it out.--Quisqualis (talk) 05:53, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Will you please help me[edit]

I have this user who i'd like to report for violation, can you block him please? I'm putting sources and accurate information on the page below and he consistently ruins the page with his inaccurate and foolish text. Please help me with him, i'm stuck and i need an administrator's help. His name is 2A00:1370:8142:679B:3108:D36E:74C8:DA84, he is ruining the page i worked hard on to give the public access to accurate info, please warn him or block him please.

You can find his talk page here: User talk:2A00:1370:8142:679B:3108:D36E:74C8:DA84

The page he was vandalizing: Demographics of Russia — Preceding unsigned comment added by IntercontinentalEmpire (talkcontribs) 03:20, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell, you reverted some of what they had done, and they undid your edit. This does not qualify as vandalism, nor as an edit war. The other editor is using government statistics. What do you have to cite, IntercontinentalEmpire?--Quisqualis (talk) 05:50, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have reliable sources indicating the Russian population, there is no sign of inaccurate info. I am trying to give the people accurate info but they constantly ruin my hard work. They claim that i'm vandalizing and it's unethical. The source can be found her, https://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=EDU_DEM. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IntercontinentalEmpire (talkcontribs) 15:06, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure "the people" are clamoring for accurate information, IntercontinentalEmpire. Please post here the URLs of your sources, so we are able to see what the contention is all about and uphold ethical values while preventing vandalism.--Quisqualis (talk) 22:29, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You don't understand, if i try to post anything, they're gonna start coming after me. Please, i need your help, can you protect the page please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by IntercontinentalEmpire (talkcontribs) 02:07, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that you seem very unwilling to tell anyone what sources you plan to cite for your edit. On that basis alone, the edits you wish to make will be reverted. You act as though you are about to be whacked for "telling the people the truth." All anyone on Wikipedia wants you to do is to play by the rules and not cause undue drama.--Quisqualis (talk) 04:56, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How do edit article headline[edit]

Hi Wikipedia help desk,

I'm looking for help editing an article headline to make a distinction between this person and someone else. Whilst I can edit the rest of the article, I don't seem to be able to make this small change. Are you able to help please?

Thanks! Kat — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.225.81.112 (talk) 11:19, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds as if you are trying to move an article to enable disambiguation. Moves can be made only by an autoconfirmed account, so you would need to make a request (with justification) on the talk page of the relevant article. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:29, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict):Hello, you will not be able to do this unless you have an account which is more than four days old and has made at least ten valid edits. An article title is changed by moving the page to a new location. You are welcome to request an edit via the article talk page. See Template:Request edit for how to do this. Are both of the persons you refer to the subject of Wikipedia articles. If not the disambiguation may not be needed. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you. Great, thanks everyone! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.225.81.112 (talk) 11:38, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple images in infobox[edit]

How can I add two images in an infobox? HovhannesKarapetyan (talk) 12:13, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on the infobox. Are you talking about Artificial urinary sphincter? - X201 (talk) 15:10, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Content abuse/harassment - unable to create account[edit]

Hi,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runway

«This article is about the aircraft takeoff and landing area. For other uses, see Runway (disambiguation). "Landing strip" and "RWY" redirect here. For the pubic hairstyle, see Bikini waxing. For other uses, see Roll way.»

Could you check the content of this, please? It's really disturbing, repulsive and not OK. Kids see this and think it's fine because it's on the internet. Trying to get a laugh out of this, embarassing and humiliating a girl or a boy's body, or trying to get others to do the same/by challenging to expose themselves or others, or to humiliate them or worse labelling it as a kind of sexual empowerment is repulsive. It's not OK at all. Could you please revise the content of the page?

Thanks. Regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ACxcv (talkcontribs) 12:27, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could you check out "Wikipedia is not censored", please?
It's a foundational site policy.
Kids who read the article are not going to do more than giggle, if that. Realistically, any kid who would challenge others to shave their crotch doesn't need the article to inspire them to come up with whatever they're gonna peer-pressure kids into. And actually, informed kids are less likely to fall for such peer-pressure, so trying to hide this information is more likely to make them fall for peer pressure.
Stop having fantasies about kids shaving their genitals with the excuse of "think of the children," that's not OK. Ian.thomson (talk) 12:35, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi ACxcv, thanks for your comment. We have a guideline that Wikipedia is not censored, which is to say (in perhaps a gentler way from how Ian.thomson said it) we only provide information. We don't decide what information is morally acceptable, nor do we remove information solely because some readers may find it objectionable. Readers who are searching for the well-known "landing strip" style of pubic hair may find this page, which is not about pubic hair but about aircraft runways, and the note helps them find the information they're looking for. New article created[edit]

Hi, I created a new article (using references etc.) but how do I publish it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-2H-benzotriazoles Many thanks --Freundlicher Friese (talk) 16:25, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It is, by the way, simply a translation of the German article https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole --Freundlicher Friese (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 16:28, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Freundlicher Friese, I know nothing about chemistry, so can't really give an answer, but I've placed the translation templates on the talk page, and placed an edit summary with details of the German article. When translating, this should be done for licensing reasons, due to the attribution part of our license. The template can be seen at {{Translated page}}. It's thankfully quite simple compared to some wikis that require you to import the entire page history first. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 17:17, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Freundlicher Friese and OxonAlex: I added the AFC draft template. If you follow the instructions in that template, Friese, it will submit it to the Articles for Creation process. When it finishes review (which may take some time), then it will be published as a main space article. i hope this helps. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 17:21, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@OxonAlex and Eggishorn: Thank you very much for your kind help and comments. The article is now submitted for review. --Freundlicher Friese (talk) 09:53, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to mark categories as uncited?[edit]

I feel like the answer is just to remove them, but...is there a way to mark a category as "Citation Needed?--occono (talk) 17:23, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by an uncited category?--Quisqualis (talk) 22:07, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Are you suggesting a title of a category is a particularly bold claim? We don't cite categories, but you can nominate them for renaming or just discussion per WP:CfD Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 22:14, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Based on [1], the question is about articles where the content does not appear to justify a given category. Wikipedia:Categorization#Articles mentions {{Category unsourced}}. It's currently only used in 73 articles in Category:Articles with uncited categories. I don't know whether some editors monitor the category and justify or remove the categories in the articles. For the diff I linked, Talk:Jermaine Stewart has a discussion where nobody found a reliable source so it seems fine to remove the categories. For living people there is Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Categories, lists, and navigation templates. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:26, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I meant categories in articles that are uncited, guess it wasn't as clear as I thought O_o --occono (talk) 21:13, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Map[edit]

Dear Wikipedia, How can i edit map in this topic? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_Wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_by_country_and_territory I Would like to add few countries to this list: Lithuania and Estonia to blue color.

Best Regards, Inishte — Preceding unsigned comment added by Inishte (talkcontribs) 17:25, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Inishte, you would have to edit commons:File:2019-nCoV Outbreak World Map.svg by downloading and making a new version. If you aren't experienced in editing SVGs, then you should ask at commons:File talk:2019-nCoV Outbreak World Map.svg. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 18:26, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I work for Brookfield Properties and we used to own the shopping center Oak View Mall. It was sold and we are not longer the owners, but it still says it on the page. I know that I'm not allowed to go in and make edits myself since I'm personally involved, but I want to address the incorrect information.

Is there a way we could get the content updated to show that CBRE is now the owner? Here's the information on their corporate site: http://retailproperties.cbre.us/cre/retail-real-estate-listings/omaha/nebraska/oakviewmall/overview/#highlights

Thanks! Allie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Allisonmobrien (talkcontribs) 18:15, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Allisonmobrien Hello. First you should review and formally comply with the paid editing policy on your user page(click your username next to your last comment). You may then make a formal edit request on the article talk page(Talk:Oak View Mall). 331dot (talk) 21:02, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New page[edit]

hi, i create a page in my sandbox to practice on it first then i published on the draft how to move it to be an article in Wikipedia.--FCBlinder (talk) 22:49, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@FCBlinder:, if you look at User:FCBlinder/sandbox, you see a big light-blue box at the top with a button that says Submit your draft for review! Click that and it will be submitted for review at the Articles for Creation queue. I have to say, however, that if you do so, it will almost certainly be rejected for not passing the notability guidelines. You should first try to find sources that demonstrate there is significant coverage of the article subject in independent reliable sources. Social media, real-estate agent listings, etc. are not such sources. I hope this helps. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 22:59, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Contagious strikethrough[edit]

I made an edit to a post on a new user's Talk page which was placed there as retribution for a good faith edit. The strikethrough is affecting all subsequent posts, making them also struck through although I removed the strikethrough markup Is my only option to undo the initial strikethrough, or can it be fixed a different way?--Quisqualis (talk) 23:39, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has fixed your problem. You had ended with <s/> instead of </s>. --David Biddulph (talk) 00:09, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
