Potential COI

Hi,

I noticed the user J4snc2022 [1] was making edits (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/J4snc2022) to the Jen Banwart portion of the Republican Party candidates subsection on the 2022 United States Senate election in North Carolina article. Given the username, could it be a Conflict of interest?

Hello, Gary. Autobiographies are highly discouraged, and the vast majority of people why try to write one are unsuccessful. Wikipedia is a neutral encyclopedia, not a platform for self-promotion. Read about Conflict of interest editing, and read Your first article. If you decide to try it (which I do not recommend), then use the Articles for creation process. Editing direct quotations to use current pronouns

Hi! Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I tried editing a quote on this page to use Demi Lovato's current pronouns (in brackets), but it was quickly reverted with the reason "Don't modify a direct quote". I'm confused because I can't find anything saying you shouldn't edit direct quotations to use the current pronouns of the person mentioned, and I've seen it done on many pages before (such as this one). "Quotations must be verifiably attributed, and the wording of the quoted text should be faithfully reproduced. This is referred to as the principle of minimal change. Where there is good reason to change the wording, bracket the changed text; for example, "Ocyrhoe told him his fate" might be quoted as "Ocyrhoe told [her father] his fate"." What is "good reason" is a matter of context and consensus (per talkpage discussion), my own knee-jerk reaction is "don't mess with the quote." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:32, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

In this case, where there has been a deliberate change on Demi's part, I would still say that the original wording of the quote should stand, but there may be reason to make clear that the quote preceded the change and is not a deliberate non-compliance. Non-compliant post-change quotes should probably be avoided out of courtesy, unless their very non-compliance is the significant issue; they should still not be altered.--Verbarson (talk) 10:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

As the article is not written for this purpose I am confused as to how it keeps being flagged as this.

Well, how about " is renowned for its curated, results-driven ethos" — marketing-speak that real people, never mind an encyclopaedia, would never use. Also, at least in the version here, there are zero sources, so no-one can verify that someone, somewhere, did once use these words to describe the company. Spub305 You edited your user page, which is not article space and not searchable by search engines. Your user page is a place for you to tell about yourself as a Wikipedia editor or user. New users cannot directly create articles, and must use Articles for Creation. However, you should be aware that autobiographical articles are strongly discouraged per the autobiography policy. Wikipedia is not interested in what people want to say about themselves, but in what independent reliable sources with significant coverage choose on their own to say about them. Wikipedia is also not interested in helping your fans or enhancing search results for you. Wikipedia articles summarize what independent reliable sources say, showing how a person meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable actor or actress. Also be aware that a Wikipedia article is not necessarily desirable. There are good reasons to not want one. You cannot lock it to the text that you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Please read Help:Your first article. Is the company perhaps named TV Air Systems, or similar? If so, please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. Tvairsystems Successfully creating a new article(not a mere "page") is the hardest thing to do on Wikipedia- and it's more difficult when one has a conflict of interest as you do. ShravanthiRK what source did you get the information from? How do you know the information you put in those sections? If it's from knowing her personally, or talking to her, or something like that, and you can't find it previously published anywhere else, it doesn't belong in the article. But if it is published somewhere, cite that place as a source, at least for now. Entry changes for Fritz Glatz, Austrian Race car driver

I am the personal friend and long-term mechanic of Fritz Glatz, see Wikipedia: the entries in the english section are wrong - and everytime I correct them a „Bbbb23“ reverts them back and threatens with „vandalism“. He has no clue: e.g. Fritz Glatz racing career started in 1965 in England, continued in 1966 for Kaimann Racing Vienna in Formula Vee and came to a stop in August 1966 after a severe accident at the Nurburgring. All can be read in his biografie in German. He restarted the careed at age 39 in F3 and later F2/ F3000 in 1980+, but cars and and entries are sometimes wrong and sources can be checked on Wikipedia; eg. his participation of 4 races in F3000 in 1985, not 2, as written (see Curacao F3000 Race on Oct. 13th, 1985. This writer Bbbb23 seems ignorant and wants to keep these false information in Wikipedia, and every time I correct it he changes it back - and has no clues and probably never met Fritz Glatz. Archiving talk page spam filter problem

Trying to archive some old talk page threads, I get "Error: The text you wanted to publish was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a forbidden external site. The following text is what triggered our spam filter: s155239215.onlinehome.us" - so how do I archive it? Obviously I don't want to mis-represent what was said. It's traditional, and I believe acceptable, to split the link with a space before attempting the archive, ie change http://s155... to http:// s155... Also, in case you didn't know, your log is here. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 17:57, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Sister Project Boxes and MOS Conflict

Hi! The MOS Seems to contradict in an area and I could use some clarification.

MOS:SO states that Internal links to related English Wikipedia articles, with section heading "See also"; link templates for sister-project content also usually go at the top of this section when it is present (otherwise in the last section on the page).

This is in apparent contradiction to MOS:ELLAYOUT, which states that Links to Wikimedia sister projects and Spoken Wikipedia should generally appear in "External links", not under "See also". If the article has no "External links" section, then place sister links at the top of the last section in the article. Two exceptions: Wiktionary and Wikisource links may be linked inline (e.g. to an unusual word or the text of a document being discussed).

Tyrone Madera, I have checked the history of the passages you quote, now highlighted in green, and the more recent is MOS:SO, which was updated in the Revision to Wikipedia:Manual of Style as of 10:06, 23 November 2020 by SMcCandlish. pages that are protected from creation

Dear Editors

The Wikipedia article on the Inverse Warburg Effect was deleted after some controversy. After that, the message was: "This page is protected from creation, so only administrators can create it."

Is this still valid? If so, how can an administrator be contacted and provided with material to create a new article on this topic, incorporating recent research in several areas.

Hasperasperagus Inverse Warburg effect is a redirect that leads to a section of Warburg effect (oncology). You seem to be referring to Inverse Warburg Effect. I would suggest you expand that existing section of article first. 331dot (talk) 19:21, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

But the answer to your question in general, Hasperasperagus, is that if somebody uses WP:AFC and creates a draft that a reviewer accepts, then the reviewer will get it moved to mainspace despite the protection. --ColinFine (talk) 21:18, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

How do I cite a Plaque (such as one in front of a monument)?

Tyrone Madera Now that's a good question. There is no WP:PLAQUE. I know there are articles that mentions for example Blue plaques, sometimes with an image, though I don't think they generally cite them per se. It may depend on which plaque and for what.

One can argue that a plaque is "published". And perhaps, but not necessarily, put there by some sort of WP:RS/authority on the subject. I guess you could try to put plain text between ref tags, perhaps with a link to an image if there is one. If someone objects, deal with it then. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Tyrone Madera By convention, we generally accept a picture as a reliable source for its subject. As User:Gråbergs Gråa Sång said the statements on the plaque were "published" when the plaque was placed in a public place. Take a picture of the plaque and put it on Commons (if old enough to be out of copyright) or on the English WP (if not). Arch dude, I visited it again, and I've come to the conclusion that it is definitely in copyright. The sign (better descriptor) is three paragraphs in length and was created within the last 50 years at most. Huh. A quick scan of COM:FOP US leads me to conclude that unless the sign actually says "This sign is released under the the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license", don't bother. Unless there is some local version of "As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image or file is in the public domain in the United States." that applies. I am also a visual artist, Photographer, and I ran for Mayor of Harrisburg Pa in 2021 (Alas, I lost in the primary)

I am publicly known as The Andy Warhol of Harrisburg

I know I am not supposed to write articles about myself, but was hoping there are editors there than can do it.

Kevynknox You can make a request at Requested Articles, but there is an extremely large backlog there and few people to write articles, so your request may never be acted on, if at all. You may not be aware that a Wikipedia article about yourself is not necessarily a good thing. There are good reasons to not want one. You can't lock it to the text you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Any information about you, good or bad, can be in an article about you as long as it appears in an independent source and is not defamatory. Vandals can vandalize an article about you to say something grossly incorrect and while that is usually detected and removed(but can also be subtle enough to remain for awhile), it could still damage you personally.

Your best bet if you still desire an article is to allow independent editors to take note of your career in independent reliable sources and choose to write about you. Forcing the issue can work, but is usually seen as promotional and viewed skeptically. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about persons that meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability, not what people want to say about themselves. It's not enough to merely have accomplishments(even if impressive as yours are), others completely unaffiliated with you must write about you with in depth coverage beyone merely telling about those accomplishments. 331dot (talk) 21:03, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Indulge me, please, if I let this drift a bit far afield. But this put me in mind of a flight I once took from Europe to the US. The pilot came on the PA and advised us to look out the window, where we would see "the Isle of Man, in the English Channel." PROBLEM! The Isle of Man is NOT in the English Channel. At least this user so confused about Sweden and Lithuania--or about compass directions around the Baltic Sea--is not likely to be piloting passenger jets around there. Tags and warnings for whitewashing of article content?
