Renaming Categories[edit]

How do I rename a category? I recently closed this discussion, but I'm not quite sure how to do so in an automated way across multiple categories. — Mikehawk10 (talk) 00:27, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mikehawk10: Hello Mike! I'm fairly sure if you rename a category, a bot will go through and move the associated category on any page the category is on to the new name. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 00:35, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Blaze The Wolf: Do I have to be an admin? I'm not seeing the "move page" tab appear in my screen when I go to a category. — Mikehawk10 (talk) 00:43, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mikehawk10: Possibly. Let me look into it real quick. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 00:45, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Only page movers and admins can move category pages. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:45, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pppery and Blaze The Wolf: oops. I should have checked on that first. I'll avoid making these sorts of closes in the future until I feel experienced enough to apply for page mover. — Mikehawk10 (talk) 00:48, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, is there something I should do to try to address the categories that need to be moved? — Mikehawk10 (talk) 00:52, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mikehawk10: Categories to be moved should be listed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working where a bot will see them, but the page is fully protected so non-admins cannot activate the bot to make mass edits for large categories. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Administrator instructions#Process says:
6. If the decision is to Rename, Merge, or Delete:
... If you are a non-admin, you will not be able to use the /Working page as it is protected, so do not close discussions that require any of the above 3 actions unless you are prepared to implement them manually, or an admin has agreed to help you, e.g. to pick up listings at WT:CFDW.
PrimeHunter (talk) 01:20, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mikehawk10: I have listed the categories at WP:CFD/W. I want to amend that non-admins can and have closed CFDs involving renames, merges, and deletes, but if you want to do so, it is your responsibility to empty the categories manually and then list them at Wikipedia_talk:Categories_for_discussion/Working#NACs (which stands for non-admin closures). However, admins have the discretion of overturning those closes if they feel that the action was improper. Also, being a page mover doesn't really affect category things; please don't use the move tab to move categories. bibliomaniac15 01:41, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User contributions not being displayed[edit]

Hi, recently when I've gone to check my user contributions, instead of showing my recent edits, its displayed a page that says 'Search for contributions' and nothing else. I was wondering if there's a reason why this happened and if I can fix it? Thank you. Huey117 (talk) 01:48, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Check to see if a Javascript blocker's active and blocking wikipedia.org and wikimedia.org. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 01:55, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Huey117: Please always link pages you refer to. Is it about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Huey117? It works for me. Try clicking a down-arrow to the left of "Search" and see if something which removes your edits is enabled. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:08, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for not linking, I clicked the down arrow and found that it was hiding all of my 'probably good edits' so I turned that off, but it still wasn't working, so instead I went to preferences and turned off the 'Show only likely problem edits (and hide probably good edits)' and that seems to have fixed it! thanks for your help. Huey117 (talk) 02:36, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Huey117: In the same sentence you say "Sorry for not linking" and then omit linking or specifying which preference page you refer to. The quoted preference text is on both Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rc (Recent changes) and Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-watchlist. If it's the latter you had enabled then it should affect user contributions but it doesn't for me. If it's the former then it shouldn't affect user contributions but it does for me. The last part is phab:T262041. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:41, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was referring to the latter, and I'm sorry I didn't link the page. Thank you for your help and advice. Huey117 (talk) 11:39, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Microsoft Windows articles images[edit]

I'm from other WIkipedia, so i don't know much the rules here. When i look through the MS Windows articles and click on images that seem to display full-screen desktop (simply look at some desktop images of Windows Vista, 7 and 8, like this), they appear to be very small (less than 600 or 800 pixels wide). Why just don't upload the full-size images? Is there a rule behind it? --Jack Jackie Pomi (talk) 15:49, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack Jackie Pomi indeed there is - see WP:NFCC for criteria around non-free images, specifically criterion 3b. firefly ( t · c ) 15:53, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, the rules here are sometimes strictier than in the Wikipedia I work in, as we don't have any non-free file size restrictions, and we can upload full-size images. Thanks. --Jack Jackie Pomi (talk) 16:36, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jack Jackie Pomi: Just out of curiosity, what Wikipedia is that specifically? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:48, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Blaze The Wolf: Appears to be the Russian Wikipedia, per User:Jack Jackie Pomi. GoingBatty (talk) 18:12, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok. Good to know. I was honestly thinking it was Fandom or something. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:16, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting list items[edit]

I was at List of people named in the Pandora Papers earlier, and attempted to sort the lists by country and name. Is there a better way of doing this than typing everything and then sorting it in Excel (or sorting manually)? INDT (talk) 16:02, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you join the discussion of the formatting of the names at the article's talk page.--Shantavira|feed me 16:57, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do that, thanks. Still, I would like to know for future reference (after all, Wikipedia is a big place, with a lot of articles). INDT (talk) 18:29, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

UK Christmas Charts is always sales & units before Christmas Day[edit]

List for Media, Radio and TV of Christmas Charts or Number #1's in the UK, is always a week early or basically not included Christmas Day or Week, this is a fact and not made up in any way, the data from sales and Units is always takes place before 1st Day Of Christmas which is 25th December, just because this week ending rule (Tracking Dates to next charts has it covered does not make it true or right in any way) So it should be the following weekly charts as the christmas charts — Preceding unsigned comment added by Baypalm1987 (talkcontribs) 18:57, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Baypalm1987: Hi there! When you have a concern or suggestion about the content of a specific article such as List of UK Singles Chart Christmas number ones, please post on the article's talk page (e.g. Talk:List of UK Singles Chart Christmas number ones). Please provide a reliable source to support your recommendation. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 19:10, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In the UK, in the week including Christmas Day most physical retail outlets are closed for at least some of the week, due to the staff having time off on and around Christmas; moreover many potential customers are less likely to buy records that week because they often have Christmas preparations to perform, visiting family members to entertain, and will if prudent have already bought their presents for others (possibly including records). That week would therefore be anomalous in sales terms, if those sales were reported in the usual way (a process itself vunerable to the aformentioned factors – chart compilers have lives too). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.193.131.207 (talk) 23:20, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

photo issues[edit]

I cant see any photos. I only see blank squares with a question mark inside. What can i do to change this? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.Bkurshel (talk) 23:56, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Using the same browser on your computer/tablet/phone, Bkurshel, can you see photos on other websites? -- Hoary (talk) 00:06, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Can you see https://en.wikipedia.org/static/images/footer/wikimedia-button.png or https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Example.jpg? What is your browser? Our normal images are hosted at https://upload.wikimedia.org but not the former. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:13, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
